“She Thought I Was Joking”: Woman Kicks Mom Out Of Her Pool That She Used Without Asking

ADVERTISEMENT

It’s nice to know your neighbors. But there’s a limit to everyone’s kindness, and we must respect each other’s boundaries too.

Reddit user Hippajibba says hers was recently violated. A single mom who lives nearby decided to treat herself and her kids to a swim in the Redditor’s pool without permission.

When the woman saw the unannounced guests, she confronted them and asked the group to leave. However, the mom interpreted it as a personal insult, and tensions began to escalate.

    Until one day, their neighbors also decided to visit it—secretly

    People value their privacy and good neighbors understand this

    This story illustrate why we’re generally so wary of those who live around us. In fact, according to a survey conducted in May, only 17% of people trust their neighbors with a house key. However, it’s worth mentioning that the number seems to increase with age — people 60 or older are twice as likely to leave a house key with a neighbor than people aged 18-29.

    ADVERTISEMENT

    But no matter how much you trust your neighbors, you may not want them in your backyard, especially if there’s something that might cause accidents, like a pool.

    The study also discovered that 81% of people value privacy from their neighbors—only 19% said it’s not really a concern.

    To increase it:

    • 26% of respondents installed a fence or privacy screen;
    • 24% of respondents planted trees;
    • 15% of respondents arranged their patio furniture or patio layout;
    • and 6% of respondents added soundproofing materials to their patio or yard.

    The most common disputes the respondents have had with their neighbors were about noise (24%), parking (19%), pets or children (17%), properly lines (16%), trash disposal (9%), and splitting cost for shared amenities (6%).

    Interestingly, 54% reported they’ve never had one. Hopefully, the woman who made the Reddit post can settle hers, too.

    Most of those who read the story said the woman did nothing wrong

    Some, however, thought the woman should’ve been more empathetic

    As usual, the YTAs are people who think politely standing up for yourself in any way makes you TA. The 'kods' need to learn respect for other people's property, because their mother isn't going to teach them.

    LIABILITY ... can't stress that enough to justify OPs actions ... would this woman also let her children "borrow" something from another person's house without asking ... would she allow it to be done to her ...

    I will never understand the attitude of "you have it, I want it, therefore I'll take it". People earn these things; one suspects such people have never thought that the rules apply to them, probably starting in school.

    I finally did this when I was breastfeeding my newborn and my MIL would show up unannounced & uninvited all the time, w no respect for the baby taking naps or me being exhausted after c-section surgery and nursing non-stop. I finally just answered the door topless and said "I'm nursing. Is this something urgent?" Lmao!!!!!!

    Looks like, sometime around 40 or so years ago, parents just stopped teaching their kids not to touch someone else’s stuff unless you ask nicely first—-every single time, because one yes is not blanket permission unless they (and not you) say it is—-and if they say no, it means no. Period. If they say yes, you treat their stuff like it’s made of gold. You then return it promptly and in as good shape, or better if possible, as it was when they let you borrow it. The upcoming generations need to learn this and pass it on t9 their own children, so we can avoid dealing with this kind of horseshit in the future.

    I totally agree. It started with the participation ribbons and certificates so that everyone wins. No. And don't get me started on all the multiple graduations that are held. Preschool, Kindergarten, Middle School, High School, College....just stop already. High School and College are the graduation milestones.

    In many municipalities, private pools must, by law, be kept behind locked fencing. They are labeled as 'attractive nuisances' along with playground equipment such as swings, tree houses, and trampolines. Liability rests with the property owners.

    NTA from now to eternity. If either of them were to get hurt the owners wound be liable. What is really stupid is when a criminal gets hurt on your property and can use... What the hell is up with that??? She had every right to tell them to leave when they weren't invited or she didn't ask permission. Then she starts badmouthing her to others in the neighborhood, nope you're done!

    Even if you are one of the crazy YTA people that seem to think everyone is free to use everyone's things (wonder how they would like it if someone borrowed their car), but this is a liability issue. Something happens to those kids in the pool and the owner is at fault.

    Had the mother asked this might have turned out differently. What an entitled rude move. It's truly a shame for those children. Imagine these nice neighbors already are kind enough to babysit for free, had she asked nicely, I'm thinking she might have received permission for an occasional swim.

    i dont understand the logic behind some of the YTA responses. do they not understand that the moment her neighbor and kids stepped onto her property permission or not she became responsible for them. they entered her yard without permission making it a terrible situation. doesnt matter if the OP noticed them or not if one of the neighbors kids got hurt its the OPs property not her neighbors. it wouldve been extra messy if the OP never noticed or wasnt home and a kid got hurt on her property

    So the OP caught her neighbors trespassing on her property and utilizing her private pool without permission. She asked them to leave and was verbally assulted then defamed. She shouldn't watch her neighbors kids anymore and might need to have a legal letter sent to her neighbor specifically telling them to stay off her property for liability purposes. If they tresspas again and something happens it'll been in writing. People like that don't tend to be good neighbors and usually need serious, even heavy handed, deterrents to make them understand the seriousness of their breaking social boundaries. It's a very specific mindset that crosses this type of boundary feels entitled to other people property.
