Abandoned Dog Receives A Life-Changing Makeover, Getting 6.5 Pounds Of Matted Fur Shaved Off

Today we’d like to share with you the results and a journey of a very special transformation. It’s a story about a Shih Tzu called Simon, and we are certain that his magical (and very needed) makeover will have you both a little bit relieved and touched at the same time.

Recently, a video showcasing Simon’s transformation was posted by a non-profit organization called KC Pet Project in Kansas City. The video, which is as equally heartwarming as it is heartbreaking, went viral on TikTok. The stray Shih Tzu’s transformation has been viewed over eight million times in the past day alone and the video itself as of now has racked up over 28 million views over the past few days.

By scrolling down below, you’ll see heartstring-pulling pictures that show an abandoned dog before, during, and after being shaved and groomed by the staff and volunteers at the KC Pet Project center.

Meet Simon, an 11-year-old Shih Tzu who was recently rescued by the animal non-profit KC Pet Project

His matted, greasy fur had tangled together to form dreadlock-like clumps all over his body after he suffered what seemed like years of neglect

Staff at the KC Pet Project shelter said he was “covered in the thickest mats we’ve ever seen”

They also added that it was probably one of the most challenging matted cases they’ve had to deal with

The neglected dog walked with bowed legs because his fur was tangled so tightly and had hundreds of fleas

Immediately, Simon was given an emergency treatment by veterinary team at KC Pet Project

The staff worked for more than two hours to shave every single piece of matted hair off his tiny body

When Simon first came in and before he was shaved, they were told that he weighed nearly 20 pounds

They removed nearly 7 pounds of heavy, matted hair

“We never know the condition that they’ll be in once they are shaved and surprisingly, his skin was in fairly good shape”

“He is skinny, he was covered in fleas, and will need to have dental surgery soon, but he’s now receiving great medical care”

With good care and love, Simon has made an amazing transformation

The tiny Shih Tzu also received his first bath in years

As of right now, Simon is ready to start the healing and rehabilitation process before he will be put up for adoption

Here’s what the non-profit organization shared on their Instagram:

“We are always so thankful for our team at KC Pet Project who put in hard work every day to create better lives for pets like him. Donations to our organization help pets like Simon each and every day that depend on our organization for medicine, veterinary care, vaccines, food, and hope.”

Thank you kind humans who put in the hours of work to make Simon feel like a sassy Shih Tzu again! And a pox on the humans who let him suffer for all those years.

Why would anyone let him get in that state? Even if you have a reason for not being able to do it then ask someone who can! There is no excuse for had happened to him and i hope he finds better owners. Imagine not being able to see too well then waking up able to see properly must of been a big relief to him when he woke up.

Oh and also imagine the relief of waking up and being able to walk again cause you’re not bogged down by half of your weight in painful matted hair

I’ll bet he just felt Soooo light and cool after getting that heavy hairmat shell off his back, then a gentle massage while being bathed in fresh cool water and oatmeal shampoo, then treated for the fleas he couldn’t even scratch before, followed by a belly full of some good food, and a nice soft bed to sleep in. His day started out like the usual itchy heavy stinking hot crap he’d been living for years, but Oh it ended sooooo doggone gooooood!

Aww god...I'm so so happy that those wonderful people found him, rescued him, and put in all that time and effort to save his life. I hope that Simon finds an amazing, loving family who will spoil him for the rest of his days! He has such a sweet face<3

Adorable little dog. Why do some people bother to get a pet if they don't want to put in the time and effort to care for them? I hope they were prosecuted and not allowed to keep pets ever again.

The news story said he was a stray, so they have no way of knowing who his original owner was or how he got lost.

I am really upset at people who have pets only to have them if you have a pit be responsible also have a veterinarian for them and when you can't afford it ask someone if they can take it off your hands if they can foster it until someone can adopt it don't just let him get dirty in nasty because you become irresponsible you are the irresponsible 1

That is just the saddest thing I've seen in years. As a dog owner, I can't imagine why or how he was allowed to get to that condition.

I wonder if maybe he was once a well-loved and cared-for pet, whose human may have fallen into dementia and lost the ability to care for him. I hope sweet Simon finds a wonderful, loving new home!

When dogs get cavities or have poor gums, they need to be put under for cleaning and extraction of any damaged teeth. Teeth in poor condition can lead to heart trouble and shorten the life of a dog.

Before you judge, maybe the person who had him became too disabled, too ill, too poor. There was probably a person who had this dog, and no one cared about either of them.

Yes, perhaps so, but a call for help would be appropriate. There are many, many organizations that can help with people and animals in these types of situations. Do you think flea infestations and rotting teeth are good for a dog? Evidently there were still able to feed him. There is just no excuse for this neglect!
