Early in November, a couple noticed an unfamiliar dog roaming the streets of South Texas neighborhood. Weak, severely malnourished, with skin ravaged by mange, the pup was dire need of help. The couple tried to coax her for a while, but the poor pooch was too scared and refused to be caught. Ana, as she was named later, finally found help a week later and she was immediately taken to the vet’s office. Looking past the horrible scabs, the people who rescued her find out that she’s only about a year or two old. As her health was in an extremely poor condition, Ana’s chances were very low, and even the founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, Stacey Silverstein, didn’t raise her hopes up.

More info: Facebook

“This poor girl was in really bad shape when we got to her…she was very emaciated, her skin and eyes infected, and her spirit diminished.” Rescue Dogs Rock NYC representative reported.

“She had severe mange and her skin was raw. You couldn’t tell her breed, and you could barely tell anything about her except that she lived through a lot of neglect.” Leslie Ysuhuaylas, a Texas-based volunteer told Bored Panda. With such terrible damage to her health and the neglect she had endured, it was no wonder that Ana was shy and reluctant.

Though despite all odds and shaky prognosis, Ana clung to life with her poor raw paws and soon proved everyone who had doubts wrong. The dog bounced back like nothing ever happened. Once her ailments were treated and she had people who took care of her, the days of neglect and apathy from humans were quickly forgotten.

“After just a few weeks of medical care and TLC from vet staff and her foster, Ana is feeling so much better and looking amazing!! Her hair has come back in full force and she has transformed into a happy and playful girl!” the page for Ana’s adoption explained.

Ana came out of her shell to blossom into a beautiful young pup. With her fur finally growing back, her rescuers eventually determined that she’s a Labrador Retriever mix. The representatives from RDRNYC wish her all the best, saying “after what Ana has endure, she is so deserving of the most amazing forever home. We can’t wait to see her spoiled and loved unconditionally! She is adorable, sweet, and friendly with people of all ages and other dogs”

As Ana’s in good health and has undergone treatment, she’s being moved from Texas to New York, where Rescue Dogs Rock NYC will be putting her up for adoption to, hopefully, quickly find the pooch a forever home.

People responded to Ana’s story and her transformation with full support

I don't understand why the one picture had a "you must be 18 years of age" warning on it. The picture was no more or less disturbing than the other pictures of the poor dog.

I heard on inside edition that some kids dragged a puppy in leaves and dirt while the puppy was covered in industrial glue. I thought to my self: "What kids are so f*cked up like that. they need to go to hell"

Thought to be honest, I'd say it is more the parent's than the kids fault that they are behaving like that. If anyone needs to go to hell it's the people who raised them to think that doing that sort of thing is right.

There was a dog similar to this that ended up in the Doberman Pinscher Rescue in my state, where I recently adopted a Labrador/Doberman mix. The dog was a purebred, I believe, and was found kept in a tiny cage in TX and was shipped up here. He was extremely malnourished, the shelter thought he was a puppy from how little he weighed, but he was actually a full grown 2 year old dog. He was absolutely COVERED in mange, and was very shy. It was amazing to see the community cheering for him, the Facebook page would always post sweet things about him and EVERYONE would comment. As soon as he got over his mange, weight, and fear he was adopted IMMEDIATELY. Its so awesome to see how much everyone loves these dogs, even though they can be so fearful of them. Everyone wants to be there for them, and also adopt them. I love people like that.

Bless the people who help. Bless the people who adopt. If you want to help but cannot have a pet, help support R.S.P.C.A Just a little bit of money going in each month really helps. You can set it up from your bank.

* Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Or your country's equivalent. As well as running shelters, they run education campaigns and run interventions when laws are broken. They also run campaigns to get people to vaccinate / sterilize / care properly / set up lead-free-dog parks. And a lot more.

The poor poor darling - mange is a terrible thing. Literally can drive an animal clinically insane from the suffering if not treated. Breaks my heart to think of the wild animals, such as foxes, who get it and will never be found or helped. Just nice to see the dogs who recover from such pitiful states and go on to be healthy happy animals.

What kind of sick jerk does this to any animal? She was less than a week from dying when she was found. Another couple of days and she would have been beyond hope.

It isnt intentional abuse - it is a skin disease and she was a stray - likely wandering the streets for quite some time and getting worse day by day. Just glad she was caught and treated in time.

Awesome story of rescue, in many cities there are dogs and cats that need to be rescued, there should be people who actually look for the dogs on the street, take them in before they are in such a horrendous condition, my wish !!!

I hear about these things constantly and most of the time the animal dies. Sometimes it's not a disease, it's poor ownership and that makes me sad I'm happy that these people are caring and nice towards animals Because really, it's quite rare...

Mange is a skin condition caused by mites. It isnt a disease. It isnt poor ownership that an animal gets it. It is very prevalant in wild animals, Foxes, coyotes, even bears The poor ownership would be in not having it treated at the outset if you have the means. It is heartbreaking to see in an animal that has been rescued in this condition. So much more heartbreaking for the wild ones who will never get treated and will go insane shortly before they die.

About dogs, I have seen on T.V. different stories about service dogs, Police, people with disabilities, etc; dogs were taken from kill shelters to train, and are successful, just a reminder that many dogs at shelters can accomplish many things as well as purebreds, my thought for today !!!

What is the answer regarding puppy mills, it seems very little is being done, who is responsible in eliminating this problem, these are questions many of us have. Perhaps we need detectives who will find puppy mills, the city will destroy them, and lock up the owner of the property, but who will care enough to begin and help to end the suffering !!!

It's a miracle the dog survived, sad that too many in some cities roam the streets, some in terrible condition, I wish there could be a better way of preventing this sad issue with dogs suffering, also when charges are laid on abuse of pet owners, the penalty is not severe enough, laws need to change !!!

A beautiful, heart warming, inspiring post. Good to know there's still some amazing people out there <3 That pup is beautiful! However, can I suggest changing the title to something more like, "Dog was so weak everyone thought she was going to die, but recovers in less than two months." Better grammar will make the article more appealing.

Why does everyone get so worked up over a dog being ill and mistreated, but no one gives a toss over paying someone to torture and kill animals every day for food? Why do people care more about dogs than any other animals? Would you all care as much if it were a pig, or cow or chicken in that situation?
