42 Times A Casual Visit Turned Uncomfortable The Moment Someone Looked Around
How much would it take for you to politely leave someone's home? Would a funny smell be enough to trigger your flight response, or do you need reality-show-level hoarding to set off your alarm bells? Regardless of your level of tolerance for the weird and unexplained, some people have come across something weird enough to make them run and never look back.
A viral thread asked people to trauma dump about the things that they saw in someone's house that went way past a little extra dust or an unmade bed. These discoveries are trauma-inducing, to say the least, and we are grateful for the brave souls who shared these cautionary tales with us.

Walked into a house party, nothing but dudes was there and on the table was handcuffs, trash bags, zip ties, and gloves. Turned right around and out of there.
Went to a childhood friends house. It was like a scene from hoarders. After I left I called her mom telling her we need to get her help since she had 2 small kids at the time. My friend went out of town. Her mom cleaned her home/offered/got her help and she’s been doing well ever since. This was in like 2020.
I walked into my friend’s house and everything was normal until we got to the living room, where there was a life-size, hyper-realistic sculpture of her great-grandmother on a recliner. I don’t think it was taxidermy, but it looked like it could’ve been. They talked to it too, my friend introduced me to the sculpture. Her great-grandmother had been d**d for nearly 20 years at that point. I made an excuse to leave and never went back after that.
The flight response is not a metaphor or something reserved for a vulnerable antelope in the savannah. When something feels instinctively wrong, the amygdala, the brain's threat detection center, fires before the conscious mind has had a chance to process what it is reacting to. Heart rate increases, stress hormones are released, and the body begins preparing to move before you have finished forming a coherent thought about why.
This is the system that kept humans alive for thousands of years, and it has not been updated for modern social situations. It cannot distinguish between a predator in the undergrowth and a shelf filled with hundreds of porcelain dolls staring back at you. Both register as a problem. Both get the same response.
I was about 9 and went to my friend's for a sleepover. The house was filthy dirty and, I learnt her Mum had run off a few.months ago and that evening her Dad came back roaring drunk. He was slurring but not really threatening but I got scared and ran home. Next day, my Mum paid them a visit and brought her back to our home. I now had a foster sister who stayed with us a year while my Mum traced her Mum and she went to live back with her.
Your mum is a good person. Many people would have turned a blind eye and gone on living their lives without doing anything. She probably saved that girl's life.
Walked into a filthy living room where a bunch of kids were sitting on the floor eating cereal. Right there with them on the coffee table was a possum eating the carcass of a rotisserie chicken. Apparently, they'd been throwing their trash down the big floor hole (as you do, I guess) & it came through looking for more. They just let it come and go. From the floor hole.
Methinks the story is about the less-cute múrder-mouth American possums (before anyone comes after me a possum ripped into our coop and kílled our three lovely hens we raised from chicks, no, not everyone thinks they're "cute" or "likeable" creatures...I hàte having to explain the trauma because so many random people I don't know get mad at me for not liking them, just because the internet currently decides they're "cute"...)
“If you tell me I can ash on the floor, I know I’m somewhere I’m not supposed to be”.
Assuming "ash on the floor" means "flick one's cigarette ashes on the floor", then if you have cigarette ashes to dispose of in any way shape or form, my house is not a good place for you to be in the first place.
What a home reveals about its occupant is something psychologists have been studying for longer than most people realize. Sam Gosling, a personality psychologist at the University of Texas, spent years researching how personal spaces communicate identity and found that a person's home is one of the most accurate windows into their psychology available.
More accurate, in many cases, than a direct conversation, because people forget to curate the details they live with every day. You get to see the books they actually read rather than display, and the state of a space that no guest is supposed to see. The thing on the wall they stopped noticing years ago is still there, because the home is not a performance; it is the evidence.
Sat on their couch and it started WRITHING under my b**t. I jumped up so fast. It was a bunch of bugs trapped under the couch cover.
I don't get it. Būtt is a dirty word that needs to be censored, really?
When I lived in Paris, I went to a hookup’s place. I was invited to sit on the bed while they went to the bathroom. After about 5 mins I saw that the closet door was cracked open. I got paranoid and thought maybe someone was in the closet.
No, nobody was in the closet. But a piece of cardboard about my height was. With labeled used c**doms pinned to it. It had to be about 30 or so on there.
I got the f**k out of there so fast.
Used Johnnys, Joes, etc. gross. BTW. There as so many euphemisms for these in the English language, BP will have to censor half the language to truly be successful.
Walked into this guy’s house and got smacked in the face by a strong stench of urine. He confessed he would wet the bed and just throw the wet clothes in a pile until his mom came round to wash it. He then asked if he could bring his clothes to my apartment to wash because they’ve been there “for a while”. I nearly broke my legs trying to get out of there.
And he did not have any medical or mental conditions. He was just too lazy to get up sometimes.
The brain makes a judgment about a new environment within milliseconds, and research on environmental psychology suggests those snap assessments are more very accurate. In Gosling's paper "A Room With a Cue," he wrote that people could reliably identify personality traits from a photograph of someone's bedroom alone, with accuracy rates well above chance for traits like openness, conscientiousness, and emotional stability.
The instinct that something is off in a space is rarely random. It is pattern recognition operating faster than language can keep up with, which is why the feeling arrives before the explanation does. So trust it!
My mom often forced me to spend the night with girls from our church that I didn’t particularly like & didn’t want to spend time with. One girl, Kristine, asked my mother directly if I could spend the night so I had to. After a weird convo with her mom about periods, I said I hadn’t started mine yet. Kristine took me to her room & proudly revealed her closet floor full of used maxi pads to show off how much she menstruated.
I didn’t sleep a wink or eat a bite of food in that house.
Nightmare.
Plugged my phone in and a two inch roach came out from behind the socket.
Walked in, and the house REEKED of Lysol. The front room was normal, but there was a room just off to the side with nothing in it but a massive chest freezer chained shut and a drain in the center of the floor.
I practically ran from that house.
Hoarding disorder affects an estimated 2.5% of the population and is classified as a distinct mental health condition in the DSM-5, characterized by persistent difficulty discarding possessions regardless of their actual value. It is very different from "collecting", which involves intentional curation and organization, or general untidiness, which involves not putting things away.
Hoarding produces environments where navigating a room becomes physically difficult, where surfaces have disappeared entirely, and where the accumulation has developed its own internal logic that is visible only to the person living inside it. It is also, critically, a condition rather than a character flaw, so stop self-diagnosing your mother just because she won't sell her beloved china tea set.
If I walk in any house and an adult dog perfectly capable of being trained to go potty outside is pissing on puppy pads all over the floor. Disgusting. I’m not talking about senior dogs or puppies I’m taking full grown dog.
I stayed with a friend of a friend in SF, on new years and didn’t have anywhere else to stay. The whole a*s bathroom was black mold. I was handed a towel that smelled like ferret and had cat hair on it. The people were nice but ew. You don’t have to live like that.
Totally unrelated, did you know you can dry off using toilet paper? It’s terrible but it beats ferret towel.
As a kid I slept over at a friend's.
2 or 3 AM her father burst into her bedroom, flipping on the lights and proceeded to rip her bedroom apart in a drunken rage, yelling at us to "clean up this dump".
When he left, we quietly cleaned everything up, and I snuck out and across the street back into my house. I never told anyone.
After that, I never went inside again, she always played at my house, until my family moved & went lost touch.
Years later I heard he died in a car wreck while drunk.
Why didn't she tell anyone? And did she have a key to her parents house, returning at 2/3am? And if she didn't, and her parents had to let her in, they didn't ask why?! Her (ex) friend definitely needed to have that ab user out of her & her mother's life.
Smell deserves its own category because the olfactory system is the only sense with a direct line to the amygdala and hippocampus, the brain regions responsible for threat response and memory. Every other sense routes through the thalamus first. Smell takes the shortcut.
This means an odor that signals something wrong bypasses the rational processing stage entirely and lands directly in the part of the brain that decides whether you are safe. It also means smell-based unease is almost impossible to talk yourself out of, which is why a bad smell in a new environment produces a physical reaction before you have identified what you are smelling. The nose knows, and it does not wait for a second opinion.
I was an ecologist. Rural NE Scotland. Sampling the burn behind this house, which I had assumed was derelict. Head down, kicking the riverbed. Looked up, a guy in WW2 uniform was watching me. Had something long and rifle-like in his hands. White face paint, gaunt, yellow teeth. Told me I couldn’t be there, he was guarding the ‘pipeline’. He starts walking toward me, I scramble out of that burn as fast as I can, in heavy waders, clumsily legging it to my car. Did not look back.
For those not familiar, the burn in this post is a Scottish stream or brook.
I was in Australia, matched with someone on tinder. My d*****s went along. It was 2/3 in the morning. He showed me around his house, I asked about a room we walked past and didn’t enter. I joked if that’s wear he hides the bodies. His face changed immediately. I made an excuse to leave, put my shoes on and ran for the nearest set of streetlights. I blocked him before I even made it to the front gate.
Walked into this guy's house to buy w**d about 12 years ago. Noticed it smelled HEAVY of fribreeze but didn't think anything of it. Had to go to the bathroom and the smell was strongest there. Peed, turned around, and there was a dude in his bathtub with his chest blown out. Went back, paid the man and left a lot quicker than I had arrived.
K, wait a minute, there was a d**d guy in the bathtub? Were the cops called? That's really messed up...
The important caveat in all of this is the difference between a genuine red flag and an unfair judgment. A home that is cluttered, unconventional, or simply decorated in a way that does not match your aesthetic is not automatically alarming. Financial stress, mental health struggles, disability, and different cultural norms all shape the way someone lives, and none of those things are evidence of a threat.
The gut feeling worth trusting is the one responding to something specific, an object that should not be there, a smell that suggests something is wrong, a detail that does not add up. The gut feeling worth questioning is the one that is really just discomfort with a lifestyle that is different from your own. The thread is luckily one of total rationality, and thank goodness for that.
Have you ever walked in somewhere that spelled out "nope" in big bold letters? Tell us about it in the comments!
The guy who told me “if you fall asleep here, you wake up with a d**k in your a*s” was a big sign that was an apartment I didn’t want to be in. I did what I came to do and got the hell out.
When I was in 4th grade I went to a friends house and I was in the living room and kneeled on something wet. My entire leg was soaked and my friend and her family were laughing because I had knelt in PEE. Her little sister had PEED on the carpet and they just left it and then laughed at me when I knelt in it. Never went back there!
When I was 5 I was supposed to stay overnight at a family friend’s house. The house was later featured on an episode of Hoarders: Buried Alive it was an episode that was so bad the pest control guy literally was crying — full tears — to the camera I called my grandma to pick me up within an hour. Like ladyyyy you better get your a*s back over here cause there’s no way I’m not having a meltdown here.
A phone at 5 yrs? But then in this case it was worth her having one, at such a young age.
One time I visited a lady that just had a baby to give her some clothes that my baby grew out of. I go inside and it is just filth from floor to ceiling. Brown walls from hand smears and carpet caked in god knows what. So I go into her room and I ask to see the baby and she pulls the baby out of a hole in her dirty mattress. I almost cried
A few months later the house was torn down. I don’t know what happened to any of them I was 20 at the time.
Didn't you call the police or CPS????? You were 20, not a little girl, and a mother, FFS!!! What were you thinking of? "Almost crying" doesn't solve anything!
Ok I have a wild one. Had been talking to this super cute guy on Hinge, great vibe, few good dates. Third date he invites me over to his place. I walk in & literally gasped. He had these weird a*s badly made wax figures just... standing around?? Then I notice the lamps, Ed Gein style lamps WITH N**PLES ON THEM. He said they were "custom made" like that makes it better lmao and it gets worse. He had a WHOLE ROOM dedicated to haunted objects. I have never gotten the hell out of a house so fast.
Ok haunted things I can do no issue ,I’d likely want them , but the wax figures etc NOPE ,
When I was 5 I had an overnight play date with a kid from school. What my parents and I didn’t know was that his parents were nudists. I called my mom the minute clothes started coming off and they encouraged me to join.
Yeeeaaahhhh that's also NOT okay. Feel like that behavior to a child could/should get you on a certain list...
Man I’ve been waiting for this.
A girl asked me to take her home from the bar we were both at, I said sure and drove her 15 minutes. She invited me in because some others were about to show. I went. Swingers. They were swingers. She brought me home to her boyfriend. I got out of there so fast.
Did they have Pamala’s grass on the front lawn 😋( back in the 1970s in uk if you had those it meant you were swingers lol )
I was friends with a girl in the neighborhood, I was about 3-4 years old. Had no clue she had passed away. Her parents were outside and asked if I’d like to come inside and play as that’s what I used to do. They did my hair like they did hers made me play with her dolls and force fed me croutons??? Croutons!!!!! Whole time I’m like where is my friend this isn’t what we usually do after I literally escaped out the back door and cried to my parents they broke the news she passed It was so creepy.
I delivered a range to a house, whilst they were actively gutting a deer on the kitchen table; which was also a ping pong table.
Heheh, core memory unlocked. My older sister and I were going around our neighborhood, trying to sell coupons to restaurants for a school fundraiser. We were in grade/elementary school at the time. We hadn't gone too far, and started to walk up a driveway, when we noticed a man using a chainsaw on a deer's head, trying to remove the antlers. So. Much. Blóod. All over his arms and running down the driveway. It was too late to turn around; of course we saw him and he saw us. He went in the house, cleaned up, came back and was the only person to buy coupons from us 😅💀 as an adult I realize he was probably apologizing in a way for having that sight on display for a couple of 8/9-year old girls. We grew up in a rural area. Thank you sir lol
Watched them put the cat litter scoop into the dishwasher with their dishes.
Oh hell no. I have 6 cats and trust me, there are a lot of litter scoops in this house. I wash them out either in the garage utility sink (which is subsequently sanitized, but is also not used for anything other than utility) or in a dedicated bucket out on the street. I do put my cats' and dog's bowls in the dishwasher after rinsing them in the sink, but there is a huge difference (imo) between residue of dog and cat spit and residue of cat píss/shít.
I met my friends grandma and the first thing she asked me was if I was German as she is from Germany. Then my friend wanted to introduce me to his d**d grandfather I was brought to the fridge where they had a picture of him in his N**i uniform. There were 1000 red flags prior to this point. Not me literally knowing his mother is from Germany and him talking about his grandpa fighting in the war… talking about his Grampa was the best Grampa ever.
Do you know how many people served in the German armed forces during the war? Would you have all pictures of them wearing their uniform destroyed just because they happened to be on the wrong side? We don't know the backstory, of course, but one could imagine that this might be the only photo that grandma had of her young husband before he was kîlled in action
My ex's dad was the sweetest guy ever, but his shower had mildew three feet high on the shower walls and on the shower floor. I had to shower in that filth. I feel sick just thinking about it and it happened over 15 years ago.
My husband and I were house hunting, and we walked into a home that wreaked of smoke, but that was the least of it. This family was an avid collector of N**i memorabilia—helmets, uniforms and weird books. We immediately saw that and ran. It was scary as f**k. Our realtor was like, “I’ve nerve seen anything like that in 20 years of doing this.”
Hàte to do it, but *reeked...yes I also noticed the "nerve" but reeked is a stank, wreaked is like wreaking havoc ...
I was crushing hard on a pastry chef and was invited back to her house ( yeah, me!). We walk in and her boyfriend is at the kitchen table with bags of d***s and handg*ns everywhere. Like, whut?!?! Couldn’t get out of there fast enough.
Ah, kitchen folks ...spent just a slant 3 years in the kitchen industry, met some of the oddest, best and smartest people of my life at that job...most of them were long-time "back of house" folks...still some of my most favorite people. The best boss I ever had was a passionate cook, head of the kitchen I worked in, she gave me my sweet Thelonious Skrunk (Ceecee) tuxedo cat; with his signature moustache and goatee. Two of the guys I worked with now work at my favorite pinball bar. It was the funnest but also most stressful job I ever had *edit: I think (?) I've finally figured out how to add a photo, my moustache boi is perhaps below! (I am quite technologically-challenged.-.)
I’m use to cluttered houses so when a old co worker said her house was messy I’m like it’s cool x man floor to ceiling in some rooms. And it was trash. Old diapers hygiene products and used tampons, shavers all of it. c**doms in the sink. Old food. The fridge was oozing. Thankfully the ex had the kid full time I tried to help her get it cleaned but she would go right back to throwing trash on the floors. it’s sad like we tried to get her professional help as well.
I was 8, rode the school bus home with a friend to hang out; to this day, the dirtiest house I’ve ever seen. Her mom offered to make food & I was like, “NO THANK YOU NOT HUNGRY!” Piles of trash & dust & dirt & roaches everywhere. I went to pee & there was a STACK of dirty dishes on the back of the TOILET!!?!!! Like are y’all eating WHILE ON THE CAN??!?? When my mom picked me up, they asked if I could sleep over & I tugged at her arm going, “Please say no!” She did, phew.
Was in my adolescence hooking up with random man from Craigslist. Went to one gentlemen’s house and it smells strongly of cat p**s. He then takes me to a room with random clutter to proceed to hook up. I told him I needed to grab something from my car. He asked if “I was coming back?” I said totally while proceeding to run to my car and speed off not looking back once.
Sorry, but you lost me at "random man from Craigslist" and everything after was not a shocker in any way
Yeah, a girl I dated was a hoarder. Every single surface was covered in something. There was a pile of garbage and recycling in the middle of the room. She slept in the living room because her bedroom was “storage”. She wouldn’t let me see it but I know it must have been bad. Her two rabbits just roamed free among all this.
Rabbits, like most domestic animals, are very clean when properly cared for. I have a friend who has two free-range rabbits in her & her husband's modest Seattle apartment. Their apartment is clean, has no smell, the buns are happy and cared for. They have a designated "waste" area, they don't "go" anywhere else. They have beds and toys. Our own cats are very clean and happy. They have toys, furniture, a litter robot, a feeding area and a separate water area. I grew up in a terrible environment, and becoming an adult with my own responsibilities, shared responsibilities, and for the first time my own pets I was solely responsible for, gave me a huge appreciation for giving these sweet creatures their best life possible. Sincerely, Sara sitting on the couch, next to my older cat sleeping in his window hammock, while I sip wine and listen to my local jazz & NPR radio station 🐈⬛🥂
The towel was to use after the mold shower and I REALLY needed a shower so I managed to do it on my tippy toes and didn’t touch the mold on everything. I couldn’t even fathom using that towel on my body so I used toilet paper to dry my body off.
cockroaches at a friends house when i was like 14 or 15. i made my mom come pick me up at midnight lmao.
A friend lived in a run doen tudor manor house. We all went there after a party. I walked in and immediately felt utterly terrified.
I made a friend accompany me to thr bathroom, (to wash beer from my hair ). She left me bent over the bath rinsing, and went downstairs.
When i went to follow her, the bathroom door was bolted from the inside with a 6 inch cast iron draw bolt.
I refused to stay after that.
I got into someone’s home and it was so dusty that I had a full and anaphylactic shock because I’m allergic to dust. My eyes were swollen and my throat was itchy, and I got rashes and hives all over my body.
Went to a man's house for a smoke sesh/date night. Pulled up and he locked the door behind me. His friend was sitting on the couch(it was supposed to be just us) and there was 20+ s*x toys laid out next to where he told me to sit. Red flags everywhere so I'm nervous. THEN he pulled out a and loaded it bc he "heard a noise" and proceeded to offer me kpins... needless to say my best friend called me for and "emergency" and I gtfo.
A family member of mine walked into an home with her best friend. She IMMEDIATELY smelled something weird in the house. there was about 12 people in this small house. She was overweight. All 12 of these people were staring at her. She asked her best friend “why are they staring at me?” Thinking it was because she was fat.
“They are practicing cannibles, you just look good to them.”
She GTFO’ed so fast. The smell is burned into her mind. Shes no longer friends with that person.
Uh, what? This sounds like a gen z attempt at "creepypasta"...the spelling of "cannibals" gives it away.. 😹 also "GTFO'ed"...Get The Fúck Out'ed??? Absolute silliness
Not even the practicing cannibals?
