My Son, Cian. Yes, My Son Who Wears Dresses

Being a Parent means a lot of different things to many different people. What does being a parent mean to me? It means, putting someone before myself. It means, loving someone more than anything in the entire world. It means, raising a child to become the best version of themselves. To encourage. To respect. To inspire and develop the next generation of our society. Becoming a parent no longer is about US. It’s about THEM.

In 2012 I became a parent. Becoming a parent changes you. Sometimes for the best and for some, for the worst. Having my son changed me for the best. I need to be an example for my son. I want my son to grow up knowing he has a voice. Grow up knowing he can do and be ANYTHING he wants to be in this world. Grow up having the confidence to express himself. Grow up being able to LOVE himself. So, I made sure I did (and still do) these things for my son.

This is my son Cian and he loves to wear dresses.

Cian also loves to wear a cape and play Superhero. He loves Ironman, Paw Patrol, Hiking, playing cars and cutting his hair short to look like other men he sees. My son is a boy. He knows he’s a boy. We are teaching him that girls have a vagina and boys have a penis. ** He has a penis, he is a boy. ** He doesn’t use his penis to be able to wear a dress, nor does he use his penis to operate the dolls and cars he plays with. His gender does not dictate what he should wear or what he should play with because he does not use his gender to operate or use it. My husband and I are raising him without gender stereotypes.

We’ve never taught it to him “This is for girls and this is for boys” and we never will. Why should we? What difference does it ACTUALLY make? I am indifferent if you agree with what I’m encouraging my son to do with expressing himself. I’m aware that it’s unconventional. I don’t expect you to agree. What I DO expect is respect. What I DO expect is not to be treated like I’m abusing my son. What I DO expect is for people to see that my son is HAPPY and realize that that is all that matters at the end of the day. Because I became the parent he needs me to be, he has more confidence in his little finger than most adults will ever have in their entire life. Because I am the parent he needs me to be, he knows he is able to love and express himself without shame. That me and his father will love him without fail. I’m not only the parent he needs me to be, I’m the parent I WANT to be.

This is my son Cian and he is a five-year-old boy.

**(We don’t believe this is always the case ie: trans-gendered. Some days he says he wants to be a girl with a vagina and we simply tell him, “When you’re an adult, you can certainly make the decision to change to that if you wish”. He’s 5. He also wants to be a Mermaid and Ironman. We’re keeping it simple right now lol. We support our child in whoever they are and look forward to seeing how their gender expression manifests as they age. The most important thing to us is the health and happiness of our son.)

I agree with the comments which point out that there's a business running behind these pics. Moreover, I keep on feeling uncomfortable with parents sharing children's pics on social medias, specially if these children might be in a delicate situation. I wouldn't call this 'good parenting'.

I thought the same thing. While I am all for letting someone dress however they want, a 5 year old has limited understanding of the internet and now his photo is everywhere. Just hoping the high school bullies dont get a hold of these pictures and make his school life hell.

Well LizzyM, One day, I hope this statement rings true for the world. When the glares, the bullying towards me, the snickers and the haters stop wanting to put me and my son down for wearing clothes is when "one day" will happen.

Your post claims that you are "indifferent" wether or not folks agree with you yet as soon as someone states a differing opinion you seem to take offense and have a lot to say to the offending party...

Maybe there will be a Dr Phil episode in the future or a professional magazine shoot or two. Look at all those transgender, transfluid series on TLC. There is money to be made by parents with kids who are "different"!!!

My kids are over 18 and I ask their permission before posting their photos to social media. Once posted, the pictures are forever available to colleges, employers, broken-hearted ex's, mean kids, nice kids, etc.

Why can't a kid just be himself without being paraded on the internets for the whole world to see? He didn't consent to this.

Thank you for posting this. The nay sayers don't seem to understand two things: 1. how gender hurts young boys, forcing them into 'masculine' roles and shaming them for wearing 'girl' clothes, and 2. how it's become a frighteing trend to 'trans' any boy who shows interest in skirts, dolls, princesses, pink, etc. etc. It's a ray of sunshine and hope to see parents just letting their child BE. That's the true authentic self.

What’s really disturbing about your article is that you’re raising your son based on how you wish the world WAS, but not how it actually IS, which is substantially, and dangerously, far apart – and you know it! You openly acknowledge that, “One day, I hope (‘Who care… big deal’) rings true for the world. When the glares, the bullying towards me, the snickers and the haters stop wanting to put me and my son down for wearing clothes is when ‘one day’ will happen.” Setting aside your feigned ignorance of the issue (no one has a problem with him simply “wearing clothes”), the only reason Cian is “happy” is because he hasn’t experienced the repercussions of this yet. Up until now you’ve sheltered him from this nasty, bigoted, cruel world where kids that are merely awkward are literally bullied to death. A world that you confess to being fully aware of, yet seem to have no qualms about thrusting your young, defenseless child into in the hope that he’ll “help it change”. [Continued]…

Len Clements
Community Member
7 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

[Continuation]… Have you, or can you, even imagine what your poor son will experience when he enters grade school and is confronted with these images of him dressed as a ballerina? Or (shudder), when he enters high school? This is assuming that, God forbid, you don’t intent to have him wear a dress to school. Furthermore, it’s true that having an affinity for wearing the clothes of the opposite gender does not make someone gay or transsexual. It makes them a transvestite. I’m not saying that’s right, or the way it should be, nor is this even a matter of my opinion. It’s just a verifiable fact. Thus, it will inevitably be how your son is defined. Surely you’ve considered this as well, yes? While the ultimate goal of your social experiment may be noble, using your own son as a guinea pig, knowing full well the abuse he will endure, before he’s capable of giving his fully considered, independent consent, is not just “unconventional”, it’s unconscionable.

I'm glad mommy feels free to use her son to promote her own agenda. Even if a 5 yr old likes to occasionally wear dresses, it doesn't need to be broadcast to the world just to highlight mom's obviously smug superior views. It's sad that she has no idea that these pictures are going to follow the boy the rest of his life. The next step for a oblivious parent like this is to proudly announce to the world that he has decided he's no longer a boy and will be suing the elementary school because he can't use the girls bathroom. Of course, all of this will be lovingly detailed in numerous blog entries and photo spreads, which will mention Kelly's Natural Photography.

My 3 yr old asks me to do make-up for him and paint his nails. I don't see the problem. I makes him happy. Problems with stuff like this from nail Polish and make-up to dresses arise when PEOPLE decided it's not okay. Says who? People, wether they are 3 years old, 30 or 60 should be left to be who they are WITHOUT nasty s**t thrown their way. No harm is being done to anyone. If people didn't make a big deal about people being what they class as different there wouldn't be a problem to begin with. It would be the norm in everyone's eyes. Media and society plays a massive part in this as to what is seen as acceptable

Raokshna, I think you completely missed the point. After you helped your son put on makeup and paint his nails, did you then offer him up as a martyr to support your own social cause by posting several large, high def images of him online, then write an article about how he likes to wear makeup and painted nails, then publish that online as well, all of which over 31,000 people have now viewed? Or, unlike Crystal, did you consider how your son might someday feel, or how his peers might react, about such imagery being exposed to the world, forever?

O.O he is handsome and pretty at the same time. Love the way he looks in every outfit. Outfit is just a outfit. Who determine that only females can wear dresses, female wear trouser too right? So, why can male wear dress or skirt? Same goes to hairstyle. Females can have really short hairstyle, even skinhead look and males can grows their hair for man bun.

Hey, it's just a skirt! A piece of fabric! Who cares? She's totally right in letting him have fun. Nobody worries about a little girl wearing trousers. He looks like he enjoys different styles and she's right to let him do that - it doesn't hurt anyone.

Thank you for your opinion Brigitte... do you have a child who is gender creative as well? If you do, you would understand the need for this post lol. You would have endured the bullying and looks from other parents. The head shaking as we walk by. The snickers. Yes, the goal of sharing this story is so that ONE day, my little boy who wears dresses will be just that and not a big deal. It's not ONE day yet....

From one mom to another, THANK YOU!!! Not all boys who like dresses are girls... no wonder there is so much dysphoria in the world if we insist our 3 and 5 year olds who want to wear dresses are the opposite sex inside. That's not them, that's US, we don't automatically call girls who wear pants boys... thank you

This kinda seems like click bait (the bait being the anti-establishment pics) in order to make a mountain out of an ant hill. If I saw you and your son in the store I wouldn't judge or think twice about it, my 4 year old girl would question it, I'd explain (the same way I do about death, ghosts, and racism), and life would go on : )

When I was a kid if I had worn dresses, I would have been beaten up at school and spanked at home. I would have been a complete pariah for the rest of the time I was in that area. It's not perfect now, but looking at how it was 20 years ago compared to how it is now, we're heading in the right direction. There will always be judgmental people. But we're getting there. I think you are a progressive and a true trailblazer. I was raised as a girl even though I did not express an original preference for 'girls' clothes. Mu aunt and elder sisters knew what they were doing I suppose. Allowing me to identify with how girl feel made me better behaved. It's important you are the parent you want to be as you will be authentic and perform best this way and your son will see you happy and so be happy too. When the time comes will you introduce him to bralettes and make-up? High heels and lipgloss?

Simon Rowe

You are a trailblazer; a true progressive. He's chosen to wear colourful and beautiful dresses. Kids love colour. Your son's very happy dressing in what are identified as girls' clothes. Also he's happy as he sees you happy. He's happy you dress him as a little ballerina - kids love movement and roleplay. You being the happy parent you want to be's important - it's authentic; he will be raised well in your loving home as the best version of himself. You're giving him options showing him what it is like to be a girl. This will mean he will get on better with his future sis. He will be less focused on girls as 'other', thus less distracted/not waste time as boys naturally do playing with their toys when they are teens. My aunt/elder sisters raised me as a girl so I can identify with your son. I was/am happy. We've 'girls first' in U.K - girls many privileges; boys strict rules/hard punishment. So I was ok with being a girl. Will you introduce yr son to bralettes/makeup/heels/ pantyhose?

I would not recommend using Kells Natural Photography services. She is awful. If you disagree with her opinions, you're automatically labelled a bully, an awful person, then defamed all over her blog and facebook pages, which I personally consider to be bullying! She treats her clients terribly and is not professional at all. Her photos are nothing special, basic really, and certainly not worth the money. Kells' Natural Photography run by Crystal Kells (Crystal Wright) is a photography "business" run out of Ancaster/Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Not a very professional one! Crystal Kells begs for likes and reviews on facebook. Whenever someone leaves a real review, usually one star, she either deletes the review or responds to it by reacting like a child throwing a temper tantrum including having her relative Madeline Wright come after the reviewer. Actually, Madeline Wright has no content on her facebook page so I can't help but assume this is Crystal Kells under a fake account. Also, if you post a negative and accurate review of Crystal Kells, her poor services and terrible customer service, she has her minions report it until it is removed then defames you all over the Internet and harasses you. Crystal Kells is mentally ill. Avoid this woman at all costs! She does not deserve your business. There are plenty of talented photographers in Hamilton and Crystal Kells of Kells Natural Photo

My opinion is if you truly thought this was no big deal why would it be blog worthy. I would never post photos of my child acting a way I thought might have an impact on her future life into an adult or even high school. Children's in fact photos of their butts or playing naked in the rain is cute, do we post them on the internet? Not because honestly we think it would bother most people but because it would embarrass them as an adult. Honestly not because we KNOW it will but because it COULD. I have photos of my daughter going potty as a very small child. It was VERY cute seeing her sitting there on that big potty, did it show anything NOPE it didn't but I won't post it because she MIGHT not like it later. So though I have no problem with these pictures I have plenty of my daughter dressing as a man and my son as a girl I would never take the chance of offending them later just because I could or to prove a point to anyone or even just for me. I just wouldn't...

i must admit the ever increasing feminene society we are building scares me. trough out all animal species the roles of each gender is very clearly defined and enforced through genetical traits that make different tasks more appealing to each gender. (wich we also see in humans. caregiving & kid involved jobs are primarily female dominant, while military and hard labor is primarily male dominant) now while women see no problem in the ever increasing feminine society. the male population is suffering geneticly. ever since we started going down the path of the ''feminine culture where everyone is so damn special and protected so they dont have their feelings hurt'' the male hormone in men have been on a rapid decline. why are the male hormone in this insane decline? becouse we are living in a feminine world that has lesser and lesser room for genetically correct male behavior and thus males are ever more forced to performed the task nature intented the female sex to perform.

I don't think you're abusing him, and I applaud that you are raising your child free of gender stereotypes and encouraging to be himself in all his moods and colors. That said, the one thing I value above all else is *consent.* Far more so than equality, in fact. Using images of a child, who is too young to understand your reasons, to promote a particular socio-political agenda on the internet, where he will be seen, recognized, and identified around the world, and could subject him to bullying or worse, is a terrible violation of his right to consent...It's important for people to stand up for what they think is right, but I also think people should leave children out of it until they are old enough to understand and consent to their own participation. Just my perspective. And by the way, even if your name was Duggar I'd be saying the same thing.

Donna Bond
Community Member
7 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I don't think you are abusing your child in the least. However, because I believe *consent* to be the highest and more sacred value, even than equality, I think you should give some thought to whether you are violating your child's right to consent to your using photos of him to promote your personal sociopolitical agendaon the internet, where the whole world can see him and identify him with it. I would say this with regard to ANY sociopolitical agenda, including conservative ones (the Duggar family comes to mind). Even if he loves wearing these clothes and loves having his picture taken, five years old is way too young to fully understand why you are publishing these photos, thus too young to give consent. I'm all for doing what you can to make the world a better place; however, I strongly object to using your child for that purpose. I worry that years from now, these photos may very well come back to haunt him, and you.

Unless they raise him to not take personally what others view him as. Which I'm fairly confident that if they are raising him to not worry about gender roles when it comes to clothing and or toys, then they will be raising him with a strong inner self image so that he doesn't give two shits what others think of him. Bullys are bullys bc others allow them to be. When we teach our children to love themselves and to not let others effect them negatively, that's when bullys will no longer have the upper hand!

in addition, men have always been active in the arts as any poet, painter, author, composer, designer or dancer can tell you, dresses probably won't liberate them that much. Walk down any girls' clothing or toy aisle and you will agree that traditionally, girls (and therefore women) have been promoted as decorative, delicate, infantile, and emotional, appreciated superficially for their looks, whereas boys (much like men) are promoted as functional, brave, mature, and mentally/physically engaged, appreciated for anything substantial. Especially in the past few hundred years, as the industrial age has shaped up, there has been a huge imbalance of self-confidence, worth and status with men eschewing anything that makes them appear subordinate or weak, and women being shut out of fully productive lives. look closely, particularly at older generations, and you will be mortified to see so much male 'swagger'.

yes it is healthy to allow kids to experience what they naturally (and innocently) gravitate toward. yes, female outfits are more colorful, artistic, and celebratory than male outfits. So any impressionable child with artistic tendencies could appreciate dresses. but don't make more of it, and be careful with gender stereotypes - you and your commenters act as if feminism is not happening - you contrast dresses with superhero costumes. 'WonderWoman' is empowering because it portrays a woman in a socially valuable function. Dresses and dolls do not empower boys to the same degree because they emphasize physical beauty and dependent labor. If dolls allowed girls to see themselves as protective, wise, provider mothers rather than as passive nurturers, and dresses were seen as elegant, sophisticated, or glamorous rather than as 'pretty' or 'cute', we wouldn't have this conversation.

that said, the boys' clothing aisle can stand more cuteness. little boys are kids and not mini-adults. such paranoia. men need to get off their pedestals and high horse. cry momentarily if you need to, learn from your sadness, rise with resilience.

This is sick. It's sick that you would de-masculinize your own son. It's the perverted side of this country that is going to destroy it. I think if you continue this your child should be taken away for his own mental health and safety.

Read it. It does not apply to my son. He is not confused about who he is, what his gender or his sex is. Hes a boy. He knows he's a boy. Desire to wear a dress does not make him a girl just as a girl who has a desire to wear pants makes her a boy.

Incredibly bad parenting by both the mother and father. This poor "boy" is now forever tainted by what his mother so disgracefully documented on the internet. The mother made it about herself and does not understand how this lapse in judgement will follow her son for the rest of his life. One cannot help but see many hours of therapy in his future. The father is revealed to be the beta in the marriage, taking a submissive role to the mother.

Angie, when I was a little girl, I dressed in a way that's traditionally considered "boyish". Many people assume I am a boy now. I respect your religious thoughts about this, but this is the way this boy is. Try reading the amazing blog "raising my rainbow"... It's about another boy who dresses this way. His parents let him be the way he is because he was unhappy before. Think before you comment.

If you disagree with her opinions, you're automatically labelled a bully, an awful person, then defamed all over her blog and facebook pages, which I personally consider to be bullying! She treats her clients terribly and is not professional at all. Her photos are nothing special, basic really, and certainly not worth the money. There's a ton of great photographers in the Hamilton area, Crystal Kells of Kells Natural Photography is not one of them. She is mentally ill.

That's a child who doesn't know right and wrong shame on you for letting him become this way as he gets older there's no going back he'll never be respected nor will you by normal understanding humans but he will be respected by gays and weird f*****g humans who still don't realize the world will go instinct one day because half the world is going gay because of parents like you I hope all three of your kids don't bring you grandchildren so you can regret this in 20 years from now.

i must admit the ever increasing feminene society we are building scares me. trough out all animal species the roles of each gender is very clearly defined and enforced through genetical traits that make different tasks more appealing to each gender.

I think if you continue this your child should be taken away for his own mental health and safety.

you can be a loving parent without letting your child pretending to be the opposite gender. Now he is going to grow up with the mindset of anything is anything because he thinks so. bad parenting.

Read it. It does not apply to my son. He is not confused about who he is, what his gender or his sex is. Hes a boy. He knows he's a boy. Desire to wear a dress does not make him a girl just as a girl who has a desire to wear pants makes her a boy.

I've known two little boys who went through dress/tutu-wearing phases around this age. One is now 20, the other is 11. Both of their mothers let them do their thing, as you are doing. Good job, mom!

Thank you Kelke. I'M not seeking attention, but I am seeking attention for the issue. When the day comes where my son and I can walk down the street without getting snickered at, or the day when I don't get chastised for letting my son be happy is when I won't have to talk about it anymore. Today is not that day lol.

There´s a picture of the boy blowing glitter. That´s so extremely dangerous. He could choke with it. Glitter it´s even prohibited in some country´s kindergarden.
