Student Has Had Enough Of His Muslim Friend Stealing His Fries, So He Orders Bacon On Them Without Telling Him Anything

A story from a student went viral on the Ask Reddit community after he shared an unusual incident he had with a fellow student.

“At school for lunch, I usually get cheese fries. I know, very unhealthy,” the Redditor Mrprez180 wrote. The problem is that according to the author, one of his friends sure likes to steal not just his fries, but the food from their other friends at the table.

After being fed up with his friend leeching their meals, the author came up with an idea. “My friend who likes to snatch our food sometimes is Muslim, and he keeps halal.” Since the cafeteria has an option to add bacon on fries, you can already suspect what ‘trick’ the author pulled on the thief.

The question remains whether Mrprez180 crossed the line and acted inhumanely, or whether he was right in the given circumstances.

I dealt with an eating disorder from ages 12-20, which was 30 years ago. One of the lingering effects of an otherwise healthy diet and healthy relationship with food is that I won’t eat off other peoples plates & I just won’t share off mine. Even a basket of fries. I’ve put in a lot of work just to eat and am extremely mindful about what and when I eat. There are many valid reasons it’s never ok to take peoples food without permission. It’s a dîck move plain & simple. Also, I don’t know where people’s hands have been and it’s kinda gross when you think about it.

I don't know if that is true? Reading this I rather had the impression that it is some kind of "bonding ritual" for him. Sounds weird, I know, but try to think of it in a "Hey, look at us, we are good friends, a pack, we even share our food..." kind of way. Maybe he is rather insecure inside and needs confirmation that he belongs? OP now changing his food choice to something he cannot eat might then be pretty hard for him, because to him it either means that OP does not want to be friends with him or that he does not respect his religious choices. I would try to talk to him in private. And yes, OP can eat whatever he likes, even bacon. NTA, of course.

If he's muslim he should know the Quran verse 5:38: "As to the thief, male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example" I mean obviously this isn't practised anymore (as far as I know, perhaps extremist organisations would still do this? no idea) but obviously religion really has nothing to with it, he's just an obnoxious prick. I mean, once or twice if he wants to try something, but every damn time? f**k off.

Right, this is so confusing. Like, you're just NEVER supposed to change up your eating habits or try anything new in case HE can't eat it. The ONLY way I could even think it MIGHT be kind of an AH thing to do would be if you KNEW he was food insecure(which op was already asked and answered that his friend wasnt) and you and his other friends always got him something and it was a silent agreement to not make him feel s****y/embarrassed. But even the, he's not entitled to your food and you still wouldn't be an AH. If he needs help and you help him out 99 times without expectation he can't get mad the 100th time when you get yourself a treat like bacon. He still wouldn't be entitled to your food.

Just personally, I don't eat pork either (not for religious reasons). But like --- op can order whatever tf he wants. It's his lunch. If moochy mcgee doesn't want to steal it anymore, so what? Who gives a hoot? He can buy his own fries.

Before I retired, I made Ex-lax and ghost pepper sauce sandwiches for AHs at work who stole food. I ensured my name was on those sandwiches so the thief knew who ruined his next 24 hours. The thief once reported me to HR, stating I deliberately tried to poison him. When confronted by HR, I asked how he knew anything was wrong with my sandwich unless he had stolen it. HR tried to brush that off and focus on the sandwich's contents, which I explained was no one else's business but mine. When they demanded an explanation, I said I love spicy food but also have constipation issues and need a laxative. I then informed HR they just committed a HIPPA violation by demanding this revelation, and I am filing a HIPPA complaint. I was told to clock out, and my future with the company would be discussed tomorrow. I left, went to the local PD, filed a petty theft complaint against the employee, and gave a copy to HR the next day. I was immediately fired. I sued, and they lost.

I have Muslim friends and if I was inviting them to my home I would ensure that meat from a pig wasn't served. Same for vegan, vegitarian et. However, if someone ame and niked food off my plate, it would be their problum if they ate something that they didn't want or like. Good for you

I’m not sure if it’s universal, but I’ve eaten at Muslim tables where you take your food from a central bowl that everyone has their hands in. It could be a cultural thing.

These are such interesting comments for me. I wonder if there's a cultural element. In my culture food is meant to be shared and there is no such thing as "stealing" food. At school (many, many years ago) we all used to share our packed lunches. That said, if someone doesn't want to share their lunch that, of course, should be respected without their having to resort to extreme measures!

I don't know how I feel about this. It's 100% not nice to steal other people's food, but I think putting bacon on it might have been slightly extreme. I'll reread the post to see if I can find any mentions of the guy seriously telling his Muslim friend to stop taking his food before he took that measure. But even if the friend continuously kept stealing food even if the OP told him not to multiple times, then I think other measures could have been taken instead of that. I don't know. Still, definitely not cool of the Muslim guy. My food is MY food!!! Grr

So now as an adult, do not nibble at my fries until I have said you could. You are petty and this is all probably made up. What are the odds that your are going to have this problem and the offender is a halal-keeping Muslim? Next time someone grabs your French fries, just hand the whole portion to him/her. Refuse to even eat one. That will teach them. Just say "Sorry, I don't eat food where others have put their fingers". And by the way, girlfriends are more like that than friends. One restaurant had a clever idea,: A small plate with a little burger and a few fri s called "She doesn't want anything, thanks"

Nah, refrain from putting your hands all up in and on my food. I don't know where they've been and this is MY lunch, not OUR lunch. Full agree: if he hadn't broken the rule about stealing, he wouldn't have broken the pork rule by default.

"Student wonders if he was wrong to secretly add bacon to his friends because he knew his Muslim friend..." Um, don't add bacon to your friends. Your friends can add bacon to themselves if they want. Also, NTA

I won’t be his friend for long if he does that to me. Seems like OP needs new friends bc the ones he have now are enabling the entitled attitude of that one particular “friend”.

I mean, once or twice if he wants to try something, but every damn time? f**k off.

What school in the US gives out cheese fries? Or any food with add-ons? We get slop and the yard-duty yells st us if we don't eat if, yells at us if we don't eat, and half the time I don't have time to make myself food.

Saw a movie about Helen Keller once. One dinner table scene showed Helen get up and walk around the table helping herself to people's food. Reminds me of that, except people thought Helen was unteachable so they let her do whatever she wanted. This guy is just an entitled a$$.

this seems like an incomplete story, why would they care what you ordered if it is your food? were all of you guy's sharing and this Muslim friend just didn't contribute to the lunch, none of this makes sense to me, but NTA.

Are they a newish immigrant? some cultures have very social eating customs where everyone eats from a common plater in the middle. perhaps it's there culture's way of being friendly.

Good for you

he could have just explained to his friend that he didn't like him stealing his fries then put pork on them. it's kind of like giving someone who is vegan a piece of steak.

"he's smoked weed before" Clearly haram means next to nothing to him, from your description. Essentially what you have is not a muslim friend, so much as an exotic vegan with no discipline or self-control.

Grr

I love that one part where someone tells him he's TA bc he's had the option to put bacon on his fries all this time and chose not to- his response? "I don't wanna die by the time I'm 40" poor kid already thinking about heart disease, not realizing that most of it comes to us via heredity. Life is short- eat the bacon fries! Just not everyday.... lol

Top Tip: Use the fork, stab the back of the hand that steals your food. Pro, highly effective deterrent. Con, can escalate quickly so be prepared for plate throwing, drink to face splashing etc etc

Do you not see what my user name is?? SMOOSHIE DOESN'T SHARE FRIES!! I love french fries and to annoy me, my sibs would steal them at dinner! It was a team effort too! So now as an adult, do not nibble at my fries until I have said you could. I generally try to eat my salad and vegetables first, then my main meat and always save my fries for last since its the worst for you but my favorite part!
