I’m A Stay-At-Home Dad And I Wanted To Make My Daughters’ Room Special, So I Painted Murals In Their Room (19 Pics)

I’m a stay at home dad of 2 beautiful little girls (almost 3 and 6). We moved closer to my in-laws about a year ago, while we love the house it was built in the early ’80s. The vast majority of the walls have that hard “sand” texture on them so going the vinyl cling route wasn’t an option. I used to be fairly artistic years ago, but I’ve not really painted anything outside of changing wall colors for probably 20+ years since high school (especially nothing close to this scale). I’ve always wanted to and thought about painting a mural for my kids someday.

Anywho… this is what I came up with. I used a cheap LED projector that I found on Amazon (which also works great for movie nights now), I penciled on the general shapes/proportions, then made at least a couple passes on each with acrylics trying to get as much detail in as I could. I spent probably 3-4 hours a day 5+ days a week for the better part of the summer. The girls have a lot of different favorites so I couldn’t fit them all in, but overall they love it. We still need to change out the windows and replace the trim before we move them into the new room.

(I do know Moana comes off a little dark, I spent many hours trying to get the skin tone right, and it’s about as good as I could do at the time, the reference image was a little darker too, so that could be part of it.)

I hope you all enjoy it as much as we do!

I'd be really happy if my dad ever did something like that! My wall looks so boring now ;-; You should be very proud! It looks amazing!

these are really beautiful, all of them. you know, what I would probably do? I would use a transparent oil paint (I don't know, something to preserve the paint), and I would keep that room forever as a fairyland room. Wait, I understood that there are some paints which reacts with light, you can create hidden characters when the light is off,

Stunning, you should become an animator and work for Disney 😊

Haha thanks. I doubt I'm anywhere close to good enough to do that stuff. I did take animation in college but it wasn't near the levels for Disney.

Im not sure, but I imagine they can last as long as we want. Acrylics once painted are probably as durable as any wall paint.

Don't give out your address, Disney will be knocking on your door to sue which is ironic because none of their stories are originals, just public domain, which is also ironic because Disney lobbies every few years to keep their characters out of the public domain which means my generation has been robbed of endless amounts of movies, books, and art that should have become public domain years ago. Sorry, sometimes I rant. Great job, the dragons are my favorite.

This really means a lot to me. My parents separated when I was 6 months old, and at my dads apartment he drew Disney characters all over the wall in this one room. Love you so much Dad.

Hopefully no one from Disney will see this. That company delights in suing anyone who uses any of their characters...to the point where they forced a day care center to shut down over a small mural of Pooh.

These are absolutely beautiful. My daughter would love your dragons on her wall - sadly a HTTYD poster will have to do as I lack your incredible talent!

As a person who grew up with images of ancient Roman houses, full of vibrant frescos portraying mythologcal scenes, this is exactly what I've always wanted!

These are awesome, this would have been my dream bedroom when I was a kid but with images of Lion king, Aladdin, Beauty and the beast etc (from my era). Still love it though.
