I'm surprised that much makeup is even allowed at the hospital. There's nothing wrong with some (waterproof) mascara and a little concealer but false lashes, glitter eyeshadow and heavy contouring? What the hell? The amount of makeup and brushes these women had in their hospital bags is insane. If you're that much worried about how you look during the most natural thing on earth, then there's seriously something very wrong with you. This is vanity beyond reason.

I don’t understand it but it’s their choice. Doing make up, hair, shaving etc was the absolute last thing on my mind. I could have had the queen of England in my room and I wouldn’t have cared. I just wanted my baby out lol.

Whatever you need to do to make yourself feel a little better before giving birth, I say go for it. Make up, a bowl of Cap'n Crunch, or dancing the hokey pokey, it's all good.

I thought hospitals dont allow makeup or even moisturisers in labor or OT as they can interfere with doctors’ diagnoses.. doctors have to look at skin colour, smell etc in case of complications..

They are the one giving birth and they should be allowed to do it their way if it helps make them feel better and more comfortable or confident. They are not hurting the baby so who cares? There's no reason to shame them! I gave birth to 3 kids and I couldn't care less what I looked like. And even if I did, everything went so fast there was no time for this. This was my choice and no one shamed me for it. These women deserve the same respect.

In my daughter's birth photos I look like I spent the last 32 hours trying to force a bowling ball-sized human out of a small cavity. I love that they show things as they really were, as unglamorous as it was.

Why do we need to judge them? I wouldn't do it, but it's their choice. Society is way too ready to criticize women for whatever they do.

That's not extra, that's just sad that you're so stuck on yourself that much that you can't even take a break and focus on your unborn child. Even up to that moment it's all about you. SMH.

I wouldn't want to bother with make-up at a time like that but to each their own I guess. If they feel up to doing it or feel it's important to look good then let them have at it.

I mean if the hospital is okay with it, and it doesn't harm the mom in anyway, e.g. if they need to have surgery. I've never had surgery but I don't think you're allowed to wear makeup. Not sure though. I mean I know I feel much better with a bit of mascara and eyebrows because I'm self-conscious about my small eyes and non-existent eyebrows. If it makes you feel better and it's harming you then do it. It's not about social media, even my aunt wore some makeup in the 1980s when giving birth to my cousin.

I was not convinced that these or any other women were doing this specifically for social media (only 30% said it had anything to do with pictures at all) or that there has been an actual increase in this practice since social media became a thing. There have long been the women who would never be seen by anyone without their full face of makeup. There have long been women who made their husbands shave them because they were afraid of the delivery team seeing their hairy legs or worse. My grandma labored with curlers in her hair, that was normal. Yeah, women shouldn't feel pressured to feel beautiful EVER and certainly not mid or post birth. But I don't like the conceited-bitches-taking-selfies angle . Most of the women they mentioned are make up professionals and explained that it was NOT for social media. They framed a woman going to visit her sister-in-law when she went into labor as being flown in for a last minute make over. WTF? Shine on you painted face weirdos, it's your life.

Well, it's not something I would do or would applaud to. But it is quite harmless, right? Some women dance, some sing, some do makeup. Oh what's disturbing (to me, just my opinion, so I'm sorry if it offends you) that these soon to be mothers really think, that is important to look perfect during a labour? That they don't find themselves pretty without make up? (to me that's the saddest part, that people can't stand who they actually are) Do really people look back at their post labour photos judging themselves about their looks instead of just staring at the tiny baby and remembering the joy they had? Really? I find it very sad. But here it comes again, we are living the Calhoun's experiment now, so that is how the "beautiful ones" are giving birth. :D :D I'm old school. I had the lights off in the hospital room, there was literally no one to stare at my "beauty", I was on my 4, my head down... Nothing fancy, nothing for a magazine cover, just animal giving normal birth. :D :D

This is honestly sick. What if your child is allergic to that make up.. So vain.

Are they hurting anybody/ their baby by doing their makeup and wanting to use it to maybe distract themselves from a painful labour? If not, then why judge them?

The funny thing is - a Mama with her newborn baby is absolutely radiant so long as she is happy. If they are so very worried about their looks that they would do this, what are they afraid?

I want to see them post birth when they are trying to survive on a few hours of sleep and getting showered and dressed by 11am is considered a major milestone. Good luck in trying to keep a squishy blob alive and look your best while dealing with leaking boobs, post natal bleed, baby blues and a house that looks like it just exploded. These women seem so shallow and vain.

The pics with moms wearing makeup while holding their babies look sooo unnatural as hell! It doesn't make it look cute at all moms! If you wanna be presentable for pics like prepping your hair- not meaning doll it up, is cool, but the full on makeup and hair done is so unnecessary and doesn't look right. People like natural and ppl understand that you just pushed out a human being!

It seems a little crazy that said very very few people have seen pictures taken of me just after birth with my newborns as I feel I look horrid so I can understand it from that perspective

so ironic that that Alaha girl was saying "nor does [my body] do well with any unnatural processes", and then literally the next sentence is how she had her husband go get her makeup. it's one of the most "unnatural" things you can do to yourself. Of course, I respect that this is their jobs, but I feel like this one in particular is so sadly ironic.

I spent 22 hours in labour. I threw up in my hair on the right side. Had a c-sec, they lifted baby up and he pee'd all in my hair on the left side. Wasn't allowed out of bed until the next day so spent the night sweaty, smelly and sticky. Those woman would be horrified!

Water broke, rang hospital, they said have a shower and breakfast and come on in, I also did a bit of makeup and especially mascara, I have blonde eyelashes so I look WEIRD AF without mascara. Had baby (via c-section), cried, eyes on point! win! Just let people do what they want.

Part of me wants to say "let people do what they want," and another part thinks this is only perpetuating unrealistic beauty expectations. Also...I can't imagine makeup brought from home is terribly sanitary.
