Mom Illustrates What Raising Kids Is Like In 30 Honest Comics
Interview With ArtistMotherhood is full of ups and downs that you don’t get to see if you’re not a parent yourself. That’s one of the things that artist Paula Kuka shows in her witty and truthful illustrations about the reality of raising children.
The Australian artist’s drawings demonstrate that what society sees in public is just the tip of the iceberg. For example, we might spot a mom scrolling her phone while pushing a pram and we’re quick to judge her. But we don’t see all the hundreds of small things she did for her children that day. Much like with professional athletes and skilled musicians, we see the end results, not the hundreds of hours of effort, pain, sweat, and tears that happened offstage.
We bring you some of Paula’s best and insightful illustrations, so be sure to scroll down to the very bottom, and upvote the drawings that you enjoyed. And be sure to let us know in the comments which of Paula’s work you thought was the most illuminating and why.
In an in-depth interview with Bored Panda, Paula revealed how she became an artist, what the challenges of motherhood are, and what her future plans are. Scroll down for the full interview. Especially if you’re artistically inclined because Paula has some great advice for you if you’ve lost your motivation or creativity.

Me to mother of three-year-old triplets: "At least you get to go to the bathroom undisturbed. They've got each other to play with." She, sighing: "The three of them bang on the door together."
This is so true! I never lock the door because of my toddlers. My teenage son, however, hates that I never lock the door
God yes. Our daughter is 7 and it still takes 30 minutes just to leave. Long gone are the days of just putting shoes on and grabbing my keys.
I think the point she was making with this was that she spends all day paying attention to her kids, but when she goes out in public, all anyone sees is a mom pushing a stroller with a smartphone in her hand and assume she's a bad mother for ignoring the child for 5 minutes.
Load More Replies...Read something similar to that illustration. A mom was shamed by someone when doing groceries for phoning instead of calming her daughters who are having tantrums at that moment. Little did they know, the mom was busy messaging his husband (who is in the car) to come hurry and get the children that time. The man who shamed her thought she was busy on social media and decided to speak about his mind rudely..with people watching.
Yeah I hate these people who see you look at a phone once and decide you are abusing your child. Kids don't need to be stare at/talked to/played with every minute of the day!
I totally agree. Boredom may be one of the best incentives there are for using creativity to play. BUT if any of the parents are on the phone when they are at the beach or by the pool with their children, then it is Put The F... Phone Down! Enough kids have drowned already.
Load More Replies...Mother's are always pushing the baby's car with their phone in the hands. Nobody has a clue that this little minutes are the only time we have free kids free. Nevertheless still being multi-tasking.
The part we saw was probably the most interesting part of her day too lol. Can’t judge her for that.
So very TRUE, Moms do so much that goes unseen, It's hilarious but so important to keep family going!👍 Bless you Paula your drawings are so right on, don't forget the laundry that is never ending, I was there 60+ years ago with my 3 treasur! 💖 Keep it up!!🌹
still nourishing my son at 3.5 years with my body. Never though we'd go this long, but he's not ready to quit so hey, here we are.
She forgot cookies, ice cream and candy bars. Hey...even a mother has her limits in the "sharing" department.
“I never had plans to be an artist. When I finished school, I studied landscape architecture at university and went on to work in that profession for about 10 years,” Paula recounted her journey towards becoming an artist. “When I went on maternity leave with my first child, I started drawing as a way to keep creative.”
She explained that she draws digitally and uses the very same technical skills that she used as a landscape architecture. “After I had my second baby a few years later, I started drawing cartoons as a way of documenting our daily lives (because I was useless at writing in their baby books).
“I posted them on Instagram and they very quickly gathered attention from other parents who loved seeing such a relatable view of parenting. I like to talk about some of the challenges of motherhood — the guilt, the frustration, the boredom, as well as the hilarious and heart-warming aspects. It’s important to me to talk openly about these things as I know it can help other parents feel less isolated in what they are going through.”
This is so real. My daughter kicks like a pro every time I try to change her diaper.
Try to giver her little toys, it worked with my gremlin !
Load More Replies...It wasn't until I was on baby four that I realised you could do all this from the other end and grip the little monster's head/shoulders between your knees to stop them flipping.
My sons are 25 and 40 now.........the 2nd part of the pic is me trying to get them to mow the lawn. ;-) Thank you
I always remind her that the sun never really sets, we're just moving around it. When it's dark here it's morning in other parts of the world and we're just sharing the sun until it's our turn again.
This can be a message for everyone ♥♥♥, not just the mommies out there but for all of us who might be feeling gloomy at night.
That's beautiful. Mother's often feel lonely because no one admitted the struggle. Since I have a excuse to do it (single mother of 2 yo and 4 yo) always admire how many mothers are struggling in silence.
Oh, I do remember this. And just before the internet, so no chance of talking to someone on the other side of the world who might be awake. Felt most lonely then.
My sister in law just had a baby. I get to hear about this. Why do people always think they know best when it comes to raising a child???
I don’t have kids but this is me talking to my fiancé. I just want to complain, I don’t really give a s**t about the solutions, I probably already knew them. I just want to vent.
Paula revealed to Bored Panda that a few months ago she started doing a weekly cartoon and writing a column in ‘The West’ newspaper in Western Australia. “I am also putting together a book which I hope to have out early next year. And as long as people are enjoying what I am creating, I’ll keep posting and see what opportunities arise,” the artist said about her future plans.
That's my before baby comment and then after baby comment...but to be fair he was 3 before he had a fry, only becuase I couldn't afford it
My mum always said when I was born, bottles were sterilised, everthing was measured carefully, second child, bottles got a bit less time, third child, they got a rinse under the tap!
Okay but hummus from scratch is like a thousand times cheaper and you can make it your favorite consistency and flavor. For a parent paying the bill for two kids to eat, it would still make more sense to just make the hummus. It takes like five minutes.
Hummus from scratch don't take 5 minutes because you have to cook the hummus beans. Don't remember the name now.
Load More Replies...I did that with my cat so it knew how to use the litter box
Load More Replies...There's literally no poop privacy in my house, my son always wants cuddles when I'm going and he's got autism and is delayed in a few areas. He's 7 but needs help wiping so you hear "chhheeeccckkk wwwwiiipppeee!" echoing around the house, only to come up the stairs to a naked bum sticking right out at you as both the loo and the door are right at the top of the stairs!
When I said I need privacy my toddler would come in with me, then shut the door. Lol
Me making pipi in a pizzaria when my kid finally found how locks work. Thanks to the kind lady that trow my kid back inside and stay outside the door.
I hate this as a father, like we are incapable of caring for our children. And no, I'm not babysitting, I'm parenting
The worst one of these is "is Dad babysitting today?" It drives my husband nuts as it incinuates that Dads can't be trusted to properly parent, just keep the kids occupied on the rare occasion that Mums are busy. It's also super dismissive of kids with a single Dad or two Dads.
Amen! I got this all the time when I took the kids grocery shopping with me. "What a good father" or "Are you babysitting to give her a break?" No, I'm just being a dad - it's what we all should do. Don't make me seem heroic for doing what should be normal.
I hate when people ask if the man is " babysitting". HE IS RAISING HIS OWN SPAWN.
I really dislike the fact that when a dad is being a dad he's wonderful but when a mom is being a mom she is imperfect in so many ways. Can you say 'double standard'?
meh. "good dad"? We dont get to hear that, usually. Usually its, "oooh, so you are a babysitter today?".
She also had sound advice for artists who are struggling, have lost their motivation or creative sparks: “Opportunities can come in the most unlikely places. Be generous with your time and skills.
“All my greatest opportunities came when I went out on a limb and did something for someone and didn’t expect anything in return.
“Just keep going and stay true to yourself. People resonate the most with authenticity.”
This is kinda like something I heard about dogs that they are only a small part of your life but you are their whole life, so like be the best person you can be to them or something like that — albeit slightly different with a person since you will not be their whole life forever but at baby stage you kind of are
Exactly. I thought if my dog as soon as I seen this one (I don't have kids lol.)
Load More Replies...Ours was like a timer. Every night around 10, 1, and 4 I would change her, feed her and then put her back to sleep while my wife pumped.
I still do that thing where you gently tickle one foot to make them shift slightly in their sleep so that you can check that they're still alive.
Usually painful and leaking, so you can't sleep anyway, wishing the baby would wake up and take the pressure away!
And when they grow into a teen, you just want to push them out the door and change the locks. My parents tried that with me.
And then the belt gets stuck. And baby scratches your face. And someone honks because your open door blocks them.
I have three kids - two of the twins - and I don’t recall it being like that at all.
Oh man. Wrestling my neice into her carseat Just one gave me a deep appreciation for what my SIL does every single day!
Fun fact: One time I was about enter a car with my dad. I took too long (don’t remember how) and next thing I know, a mother is coaxing a baby into a seat. She then baby talks it. She notices me and apologizes and my dad said it was fine and that once happened to me

My Dad spoils my son in a different way. He's an amazing Romany Gypsy elder and has a traditional vardo bow wagon in the back garden and owns a 16 acre woodland which my son refers to as his "big garden". He lets my son make wooden sculptures with various tools, (supervised), and has loads of cool props and puppets and stuff he uses for work. He also writes kids stories and my son appears in a tonne of them and gets to go to events and such with him.
Um,... granny with her second grandchild 😑 (the first one didn't dare ask )
no, the first one was her kid. she didn't spoil her kid, but she spoiled her grandchild.
Load More Replies...It makes me laugh... my parents were so strict, my dad didn't do anything with me or my brother ever .... now they are grandparents my dad does everything with my nephew, and spends every moment he can with him and they both appear to have decide rules are for breaking!
Not sure why you got downvoted, the 80s we're awesome.
Load More Replies...lol My mom said no a lot to me and even today she says no more than sure. Some of her reasoning was understandable but sometimes the reason was that she "doesn't want to start something". What I don't know. But I think it's more along the lines of what she perceives as annoying. But she's caved in and got me those Click Clackers and regretted it XD
This is so true!! I absolutely love getting to spoil my grandchildren ♥️♥️
Babies cam learn sign language as early as 4 months old. There are plenty of free YouTube videos. You don't need them to learn everything but just a dozen basics like eat, play, more ...ect. you'll be amazed at how quick they learn and how much less they cry.
This is true! They would speak sooner but the larnyx in the throat takes a while to drop enough that they can physically speak. The high larnyx s also why babies can breathe and drink without choking.
Load More Replies...We spend two years teaching them to walk and talk, and spend the next 16 telling them to shut up and sit down...
Son, all day long: "No,no, no, no,no". Me: "Do you want some ice cream?" "No!" *Gets angry because I don't give him any ice cream*. Me: "Do you like saying 'no'?" Son, mustering positivity that comes rolling up from the region of his little toes: "YES!"
You can’t wait for them to walk and talk, then wish they’d be quiet and sit down.
Oh that's a two-and-a-half-year older! One day I offered several choices to a cute little girl this age and each time she cried after she said no. I had this epiphany that she really wanted to string beads, build a puzzle, separate beans in a muffin tin, but her need for independence was so strong she HAd to say no, although it troubled her deeply to make that choice. Life is complicated, even for toddlers.
Yes!! I literally made my middle child sit down on the ground, look at me, and then tell me why I said I wouldn't carry his toy.
The older you and they get......the weirder they think you are. C'est la vie ;-)
Im sorry to disappoint, but to me every friend mom i have looks old and tired
This made me tear up!!! We need to remember to see ourselves as our kids see us!
Haha!! And you'll only do that until they are teenagers! After that, it's like chloroform to the face! Hahahahaha
Load More Replies...Nah, when they’re older, you won’t want to smell their clothes. Trust me! 🤣
Linda Donovan is so right...found a box filled with my sons baby clothes stored in the attic.I sat sniffing them and teared up...how silly can you get..
This is so true! I want alone time so bad and if I get it, I just miss my kiddos.
No..that's why you tell everyone you're going to yoga when you're actually going out to have coffee with friends.
Sis. I used to be 100% convinced my child was being tortured. Smh
How come some of our friends always do this when they call us on the phone, too?
the reason he has an English accent is from watching Thomas the Tank Engine
Load More Replies...I'm loving the idea that the kid was watching the old school Thomas The Tank and now talks in a slow, downcast, Scouse accent like Ringo Star.
My 18 year old went to London on holidays and got lost on his way to Paddington.Asks direction of an English gentleman. They strike up conversation and the man asks if my son is American (went to AISL) He says no,my mother is Danish and my father is Portuguese..pause while the gentleman digest this info...and then says«surely it is not your fault (sic)«
There’s a mat for them to sleep on you can buy now that will alert you if there’s something to be alert for, & that way you can have some peace of mind!
I'm still wearing my maternity pants from work (uniform) and I reorder more maternity pants, they're so comfy :)
After you give birth, it's handy to have extra big underwear that has room for a pad or an ice pack. Or at least underwear that's big enough not to chafe on your battle-worn lady parts until they heal in a few weeks. But then you realize you like wearing enormous underwear that never gives you a wedgie. So you keep them forever.
Load More Replies...It's dnot when you have a baby. This direction the baby can spin it, it doesn't unroll on the floor. *the more you know*
Load More Replies...I sincerely don't care about the direction of the paper, but if you don't replace the roll I'll end you.
Always this. Even as an older child who understands privacy, as mum you’ll still never get that! Drives me insane. Lol
It’s Australia, they do everything different Down Under 😆 The toilet flushes in the opposite direction too!
Wrong way right was I DON'T CARE!!! As long as there's an appropriate amount of toilet paper on the roll and the roll is on the holder, that's all that matters.
ours was loading and unloading a timber truck (pillows on my back, so so relaxing)
I’ve done this but letting my twins put stickers on me. They loved it and so did I!
My son turned 3 last month. My sister made a beautiful cake with his favorite characters on it. What he wanted was a cookie with whipped cream.
Give funny silly names to the food has working lately. Don't know for how long.

V8 juice (not the old fashion ones). One 8oz glass is a serving of fruit and veggies. She loves them.
V8 has a pretty high salt content. Mott's Garden Cocktail is somewhat better in that regard.
Load More Replies...Tell them the veggies in the spaghetti are candy.. to this day, I still call it candy spaghetti 😂
Or put them in a blender and make them unrecognizable for spaghetti sauce.
My baby talked earlier than others, had a huge vocabulary, great fine motor skills... also has Autism, ADHD and Tourettes. Is a teenager and can't fill their own water bottle, has to use a straw to drink from a cup and can't tie their own shoes. Being advanced as a baby means nothing.
Thank you for sharing this. And you are totally correct.

My father listened to all this and put the lid on it.......hmmm,but MY daughter is VERY pretty!..
I don't know what I did, but my daughter never went through the bratty teenage stage. She still likes me and we sometimes talk for hours about nerdy stuff.
Load More Replies...I have a mobility shopper trolley and I get my son to hold it when we are out together. One time I said, "because if I lose you, I'd have to get a new Booboo" and he looked up at me and said, "and that would hurt your hooha Mama".
You know what they say: God made teenagers so parents wouldn't feel so bad about their children leaving home.
Don't forget the sizable chunk of time trying to get them to sleep
Well today we baby them too much, when i was a kid, i had to sit at the table until i ate.... after 3 hours, my mom took it way and let me starve so i could appreciate food. I worked. It was all eat now or starve. Teaching discipline and morals were not as peachy as today. You HAD to obey or else!
She's still got time for craft and reading even if it is little bit, I envy her.
Not for me,..... I guess I was not an " ideal mom" (and I made peace with that and being judged for enjoying work)
Parenthood is not textbook. Whatever works best for you is good as long as the child is safe and feed.
Load More Replies...Oh yeah, I had the moment with my 16 yr old. Just knowing she'll be legally an adult makes me sad. It was so fun raising her!
this hit me when my kid told me I didn't need to wipe his butt anymore, or help him dress up anymore...
I was thinking this just this morning. My first has just started Uni.
Load More Replies...For me, being a parent is a bliss. Yes, it is exhaustive.. But it is far better then the period of my life when I just work and spend all my time just for myself..
Taking a good view, i believe the children are the future internet trolls with their spot on criticism on anybody and everything. Their honesty is deadly.
Rebecca Ozuna,I read some other comments of yours and people are quick to judge,down-voting you. What I see is some-one in pain.In a perfect world every child should have loving and caring parents, but unfortunately that is not so.You survived childhood and now it is up to you to carve out a better life for yourself. If and when you have your own children you know just how you would like them to grow up.It is not easy to be a parent, lots of trials and errors, but violence is never the answer.I wish you the very best so put the past behind you.The past is the past.
'Violence is not the answer' So, if somebody kills your kids, you'll be ok with it? Look, kids that kill students are never given symphaty over what those kids did to them. Instead of crying for the dead kids, parents should've raised those kids to threat others with dignity to avoid their massacre. My pity goes for the shooters. Their only crime was to shoot their bullies. What? Do i deserve to be shoot too for having a different opinion? I thought that violence wasn't the answer. Punishment is a form of violence, we put people in prison as punishment for their bad behavior, not to have a picnic. Nobody learns neither respect or discipline with kisses. Just ask the inmates.

Grilled cheese or chicken nuggets, with V8 juice. It's still healthy.
To whomever down voted me, you must have no kids.
Load More Replies...My wife says this all the time. I tell her it's not a competition and our kid is doing just as good as all the others in school.
When i get mocked by friends, family or strangers because i choose not to have kids or a husband, i remind them of my freedom to do what i pleased, eat as much as i wanted and money of my own........... their smiles disappear like some magic act. You're not better person because you got a kid. Don't insult the ones that does not want them.
Rebecah, your comment is rude and is totally irrelevant to this picture. This picture has nothing to do with insulting women who choose not to have children. And judging by your comments on other pictures, I'm not surprised to learn that you don't have children. I'm not sure why you're even reading these comics since you obviously cannot relate to them. You don't seem to like being judged by others, yet you had no problem posting judgy comments on some of these pictures.
Load More Replies...No. Be your kids' parent. Friendship can come after they get older, when they aren't trying to constantly test the boundaries. I had the friend parent, and while at the time it was wonderful and made us very close, what I needed was someone who made me set goals and then helped me reach them. I realized later why I needed a parent, as opposed to a friend, but it really was too late. Certain healthy behaviours and habits never took hold. I love my Dad like crazy, and he's one of my best friends. I'm 45 and while we are unable to ever have children, I always promised myself that I would be a parent first, until they were old enough to understand. Every now and then is fine; just don't make 'friend' your default setting until they are older.
Load More Replies...she is drawing from her experience, not a comment about men in general.

Load More Replies...I dont think this is fair, Dads feel much much more than this. We think we are not spending enough time with our children, we miss big moments in their lives because we are working too hard to pay the bills and to be able to provide our family with every thing they want. We feel terrible when our family wants something but we don't have money to buy it.
There is a "quality time with family" gap between men and women.

My Daughter's first word was "Ozzy"! My son's was "hotdog" but more like "dotdog" from Mickey Mouse song !!!!
She is making comics about HER experience with motherhood and her relationship with her children, not her husband. Honestly this panel does not seem to me like she is not grateful, aware, or interested in her husband's own struggles. It is just one facet of her daily struggle, and of maybe feeling a little under-appreciated. As a housewife I can relate. Based on your comment, perhaps instead of looking through motherhood comics, you should look at those showing the struggles of the workplace so that you can more easily relate to.
I understand what you are trying to say. I agree that she has a hard day. But I don't see her asking about his day. An hour each way in bumper to bumper traffic. As nasty boss who thinks you are his/her slave. Obnoxious co-workers. Work that is not what you thought you would be doing when you went of college for far less pay then you are worth. Not that easy being the bread winner either.
I hope not every woman is so sexist and ignorant.

Heres some advice from a parent of 3: If you’re not prepared to do the hard work, don’t be a parent. If you are so upset about the kids goes with you to the bathroom, lock the door. Many dads actually do a great job - if not, do something about it. And again: If you really feel like bitching over your life as a parent - then maybe it’s not the right job for you. Kids are wonderful and takes a LOT of work 24-7 for many years. That’s just how it is - accept it.
I think you missed the point of these illustrations. They were not designed to criticise as you are doing. The mother loves her kids, she's just expressing the difficulties in a humourous way. Be a bit more supportive! It's people like you who cause other parents to feel inadequate and depressed. Hate this attitude...
Load More Replies...Lovely comics and very relatable on many levels. I am tired of seeing comments from people who do not relate, or disagree, as if the artist is making some grand statement as a generalization on motherhood everywhere and for all time. This is her personal story, her own experiences. How is it "not fair" when her panels happen to hit on gender stereotypes if it is actually her reality? Just because exceptions exist, families are different, and not everyone fits the cookie cutter mold does not mean that sometimes, on some things, it does! Spread positivity my friends, don't judge, just enjoy!!
Well, I’m 14 .-. I don’t know anything about any of this .-. But thanks for the warning!
You make your choices out of what society tells you to do and unconscious selfishness while in emotion-based mind, then you accept the consequences and everything else without making it everyone else's issue too.
Thank you. I could relate to so many cartoons. It's nice to know we're all goi g through this together
