“She Only Makes One Face”: 50 Beloved Actors That These People Just Can’t Seem To Like
No matter how popular they are, most celebrities have haters, too. And actors are no exception. Beloved by many, they get on some people's nerves, sometimes for no apparent reason. But that's usually part of the deal of being famous.
One redditor became curious about what actors people hated, despite them being loved by many, too. They started a thread on the ‘Ask’ subreddit and netizens compiled quite an extensive list, some pointing out that 'hate' is quite a strong word, yet having no problem naming the actor. Scroll down to find their answers on the list below and feel free to let us know in the comments what actor you are not that fond of yourself.
On the list below, you will also find Bored Panda’s interview with Professor Emerita at Northwestern University’s Department of Theatre, Cindy Gold, who was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about acting and the role likability plays (pun intended) in regards to it.

Woody Alen.
M-Test24:
I'm 51 and I've always disliked him. I saw part of one of his movies when I was a kid and thought it was dumb as hell. I don't think he's smart, witty, or funny on any level. Finding out that he's a p*do is one of the least-surprising news items ever.
Kardashian. Any one of them. Can they be considered actors?
Tom Cruise.
MedievalFightClub:
I feel like he is insanely good at what he does. But I also feel like he’s an astoundingly insincere and uncaring person
Yes, he is insanely good at being Tom Cruise in every single movie.
People can have hundreds of reasons to dislike an actor—or any person, for that matter—some of which might not even make much sense. They might not like their hairstyle or clothing, which is often not even the actor’s choice, or have that “I dislike them but I don’t know why” feeling about them.
But some people have some valid reasons, too, such as terrible acting or being a terrible human outside—or even on—the set. As you will soon find out, people on this list pointed out quite a few different reasons, and many different actors, but according to an expert, likability shouldn’t be something representatives of this occupation should be primarily focused on.
J Lo & Angelina Jolie.
JohnnieBrooklyn:
I'm kind of OK on Angelina Jolie, but never could figure out why J Lo was famous!
In an interview with Bored Panda, Professor Emerita at Northwestern University’s Department of Theatre, Cindy Gold, noted that likability isn’t something an actor, especially a young one, should focus on.
“As an actor and teacher of acting for over 40 years, I can’t say I’ve ever taught or thought much about an actor’s likability. We just don’t focus on such an ineffable quality, and I think it could be somewhat damaging for a young actor to even think about it,” she said.
“That being said, there are some actors who walk into a room and are immediately disliked, or misunderstood, by auditors and directors. We, as teachers, try to get the students to understand that there’s almost nothing they can do to correct that at the moment. If one tries to ‘be likable,’ we can usually sniff out a fake. As actors, all we can do is prepare really thoroughly, be on time, and work hard.”
James Corden.
morecrimeplease:
We don’t want him back here. god he’s so up his own arse
Amber Heard. Her performance “My dog stepped on a bee *awfull face*”, is by far the worst acting.
Never since any of her movies. Never will. Heard she treats underlings like dog s**t.
Mel Gibson. Twat.
Sexist, racist, and homophobic. Add anything else as well. Will still do movies but he's damaged goods. None of his work has made any money which is a death call to Hollywood. Not well like in Hollywood despite what his PR people put out.
“Be that as it may, our industry does spawn some narcissists,” Prof. Gold continued. “Sometimes, there’s a rumor about an actor that they are ‘difficult’ or ‘high maintenance.’ And that rumor, whether true or not, can be harmful.
“I certainly would avoid directing an actor with that kind of reputation. And I have had situations where a cast member was difficult and it does make the process far less fun. In a VERY few cases, if I knew they were going to be a part of the cast in advance, I’d think hard about whether I want to work again with them.”
Will Smith.
extragreensauce:
Used to love him. I liked Wild Wild West, but the rest of society hated that movie, 3/4 of MIB were amazing, Independence Day 1 was great, etc ...
His toxic relationship with Jada is really f**king up his whole life and career. I think he still has potential if he gets away from her.
I used to love and support his work since childhood but it came crashing down just like finding out about Bill Cosby… Just makes me sad & disappointed when I hear about him now.
Will Ferrell.
ChaoticGoodMrdrHobo:
I loved him in “Stranger Than Fiction”, but other then that can’t stand him in anything I’ve seen him in. The man has talent, but I’m not into his kind of humor.
Did a lot of "adult's acting like kids" movies which became annoying real quick.
Discussing what makes an actor likable, the expert suggested that they should be conscientious, hardworking, giving, clean, and kind. They should also look you in the eye on stage and in the dressing room, and be on time.
“An actor should work hard on their craft, be a good person, and try to make rehearsal and performance fun, not just for themselves, but for all of us,” Prof. Gold told Bored Panda.
As for how to regain popularity after it is lost, she admitted to not having an answer. “I will likely never see another Mel Gibson movie, if I can avoid it,” she added.
Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell. I just can't stand watching movies with either of them.
Adam Sandler: if I was stuck on a desert island with him, I'd jump off the next cliff and swim away.
Jim Carrey.. He gives me the creeps.
Jared Leto.
ntmadjstdisapointing:
Who does like him though?
I am with you. Pretentious twat, and not that good of an actor.
Hate is such a strong word, Kevin Hart.
EDIT 1: oh my glob I thought I was about to start trouble by saying his name. Glad to know I’m not alone! I just don’t find him funny in movies, Night School was overhyped.
baconredditor:
“I’m short, I’m black, and I’m loud” comedy formula doesn’t work for you?!
Mark Wahlberg, it's not like he can act, why is he in so many movies?
Owen Wilson
That soft spoken monologue that he does in every role is infuriating.
Pete Davidson.
TheLittleNorsk:
I don’t understand his cult of women who flock to him, if I met him the first thing I would want to do is arrange a date with my fist and his face
Chris Rock. I don't hate him, I just don't think his standup is funny. He's just telling stories while yelling.
I've never cared for his comedy, but damn the man can act. If you haven't seen it already, watch "Nurse Betty." He holds his own with Morgan Freeman & Renee Zeilweiger (which I've probably misspelled...)
Mindy kaling.
earlofhoundstooth:
The late night talk show where she surprise off script kissed an actor cause he was hot, then threatened to fire her crew because they noted she'd sexually harassed him was pretty rough.
Also, she (among other people) ruined Velma. Not that there would've been anything to save, but still.
Ben Affleck.
[deleted]:
Ben Affleck should have just been some middle manager at a car company.
He’s proved to be very talented behind the scenes - directing, producing & writing, so maybe that’s where he belongs.
Jada. Yeah, I know it was Will who slapped Chris Rock but the slap wouldn't have happened if Jada would have a sense of humor instead of being so uptight.
Wil should not have slapped Chris, but Chris should not have mocked Jada for having a disease. Why *should* she have a sense of humor about that?
Jennifer f*****g Aniston.
dollish_gambino:
Everything about her screams beige to me.
Joy Behar!!!
She's a washed-up has been of a "comedienne" who has grown too big for her own britches and steamrolls anyone who DARES to disagree with her about literally ANYTHING and publicly shames them on her stupid show with the rest of the self-important mean girls.
Ben Stiller. Something about him just creeps me out.
The Secrete Life of Walter Mitty I can watch numerous times. Not sure about his other movies.
Seth Rogan. His laugh and voice are borderline unbearable.
As an actor, I don't have an opinion, but I love that he cut James Franco immediately when Franco was accused of sexual explotation and misconduct eventhough they were best friends.
My husband hates Vince Vaughn. No rhyme or reason. Just hates him.
A celebrity I don't care for is Demi Lovato. *Demi gives me the ick.
Edit: she/they to Demi.
Vince Vaughn is in the same category as a lot of the other "can only do one thing" which is quick fast confusing script and pepper in some punchline jokes to make him seem funny. Other than that...nada.
Chris f****n Pratt.
RandomFellaIAm:
I used to really like him back in the P&R days as he reminded me a lot of a good friend of mine, but since then he’s become an arrogant self loving wanker.
The Rock.
MotorolaRzr:
He's not a bad actor...he's just a one trick pony. And he's the wrong casting choice sometimes, yet he's in everything. He was especially out of place in jungle cruise and red notice. There are other actors!
Mark Wahlberg. Hate criminal piece of s**t.
you know you are really hated when you make this list twice. lol
Priyanka Chopra - saw one movie of her's and found her so insufferable and now I can't really watch anything she's in.
Gorgeous to look at. Not much anything else. Looks fab in designer clothes.
Zendaya. im so tired of seeing her everywhere. it’s not that she’s not talented but she certainly is overrated.
Matthew McConaughey. He gives me that creepy southern Christian pastor vibe. *shiver.
Let's just say not everybody loves Raymond.
legoshi_loyalty:
He was really really good in Paddleton, because it was a good indie movie, but I get the impression he's not the nicest fellow.
Timothée Chalamet. Don't know why.
Horrendously overrated, overexposed and I also don't understand how is he, like, the world's #1 sexyman when he constantly looks five seconds away from dying.
Kevin Costner. The talent of a block of wood.
I was deeply inlove with Kevin Costner in my pre-teens. I was so inlove with him I made a magazinestand with this initials burned into the sides and a huge heart. I owned all his movies and I planned to marry him. Well... I now see that he kinda looks like my dad... dont know what to say about that... my (real) husband laughs his head off every time he sees that magazinestand (yes, my parents refuse to throw it away and still uses it).
Nicole Kidman - I am so tired of seeing her in everything and that bizarre pda she does with her husband EVERY time they are on the red carpet is gross and so suspect.
Adam DeVine. I wouldn't say hate, but I certainly dislike his characters and there's something about his face that gets me riled up and not in the good way ;'].
Leonardo DiCaprio just so over rated.
No, just no. Think whatever you want about the man but as an actor he’s one of the best ever.
Lady GaGa.
I’m sorry.. but BC carried A Star is Born and it still sucked.
From interviews I've seen, she seems like a great person. I wish nothing but the best for her.
Katherine Heigl…I don’t hate her - her vibe is off.
Yeah they crushed her career because she stood up for what she’s worth! She is an incredible actor!!
Tony Danza. He is a no talent, loud mouth, who has not been able to get any kind of hit in over 30 years.
Scarlet Johansson. She only makes one face.
Jennifer Lawrence. I don't think she's as funny as people find her.
Do people find Jennifer Lawrence funny? She isn't a comedian and hasn't been in any overty comedic films that I can think of. Isn't she considered to be a little overly serious?
Jack Black. I try to like him. Everyone else seems to think he's lovely.
As an actor I could take him or leave him. But as a person, he seems pretty chill and decent, which is so rare for a celebrity.
Johnny Depp. He's basically played the same character for years, whether it's a kooky pirate captain or a kooky candy maker or a kooky native American sidekick. He also does cologne ads despite looking like his natural scent is cigarette butt soaked in sour wine.
Cannot disagree more. Yes, a lot of his roles are kooky, but he plays such a fun variety of kooky roles! And does it damn well - he is so enjoyable to watch. You can see his immense talent in more of the earlier roles (pre Burton). I had blacklisted him for ages due to the animal smuggling incident, but not that more has been revealed about his relationship with Heard, I feel a bit more forgiving. But, again, I don’t really care about him as a person (because I don’t have to live or work with him) - I care about him as an actor and, man, is he and enjoyable actor.
I am going to get a lot of s**t for saying this and hate is not the word I would use but… Ryan Reynolds. I feel like he plays the same personality in everything and he isn’t very attractive. Now, if that was that in itself it’s fine because I don’t think he is horrible or ugly but the whole movement of people making him out to be the best and sexiest person I think is what bugs me more than just him being him. I’m a straight man but if people were going crazy like this over Henry cavil or maybe Bradley Cooper, Chris hemsworth then I think I would understand it more.
Downvote me all you want but I like Ryan Reynolds. I also like that he fought Disney to keep the characters in the movies true to who they were and not sell out . He wrote ALL the Deadpool movies and listens to the fans. He's still fighting for the fans after Disney broke their promise to him , they need him for the Mutant saga. He's fighting to keep characters true to who they are for the fans and not changing anything to check boxes, making it a hill to die on. He and Hugh Jackman were promised money and that Marvel projects would stay true to source material and Iger turned around and put some ofmoney towards DEI made Disney movies instead and are giving Ryan and Hugh difficulty by trying to change things in future projects including Deadpool and Wolverine. They can't recast their money maker . THEIR ONLY MARVEL MONEY MAKER. Fans would walk away from anything Deadpool if they recast. Ryan loves the fans. He appreciates his fans. He doesn't let fame go to his head
Sandra Bullock. Probably a nice woman but I f*****g hate her face, voice and acting.
An irrelevant dinosaur named Jane Fonda.
Do people not know what an amazing actress she is?! “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They” is an amazing film and her performance is astonishing. In the 1970s and ‘80s, she was quite a force.
Tom Hanks, something about the guy just rubs me the wrong way. I can't really describe it but it's kinda like watching him gives the same feeling as being home alone in the dark and hearing a noise down the hallway.
Edit- rearranged wording slightly.
The vast majority of Hollywood stars have limited range. They can play one part. It usually comes down to whether you enjoy that one character or not.
Have we all just collectively decided to forget about him?
