Mom’s Shocking Car Accident Photo Is A Chilling Reminder To ALWAYS Put Your Kid In A Car Seat

Being a parent can be stressful. While the temptation to take shortcuts when in a rush can be real, this mom’s viral post clearly illustrates that your child’s car seat safety is definitely not something to take lightly.

Jenna Casado Rabberman of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, had pulled over her trusty Honda CRV for some shopping on the way home from preschool, with her 6 week and two year old boys securely strapped into their rear-facing car seats. Out of nowhere, another car slammed into them at high speed, leaving the Honda totalled but Jenna and her kids miraculously unscathed.

“You never think it will happen to you,” Jenna said. “My boys escaped without a scratch but the paramedics told me it could have been very different had I not taken the extra 2 minutes to be sure they were buckled correctly. I will be fine, my kids are fine, everything else can be replaced. Sending thanks to God for keeping us safe. (along with Honda, Graco & Chicco)”

Jenna’s Facebook post showing the chilling aftermath of the crash, with car seats still in pristine condition, serves as an important lesson for all parents and illustrates just how vital a good quality and properly used car seat is for the safety of your child. She has used the opportunity to spread her message about car seat safety and people are listening. “THIS is why you buckle your kids into their car seats correctly every SINGLE time,” she wrote. “Even when they scream because the straps are tight. Even when they complain about the chest clip or being rear facing.”  Jenna was also clear that despite the car seats seemingly excellent condition they will be replaced, as per safety experts’ recommendation after any accident, large or small.

A question to over the pond: is it not mandatory to have child seats until a certain age/height? Over here it would get you immediately ticketed if you did not use proper seats. Being critical of "to the world" facebook posts, I still think this is a reasonable lesson to tell for those who think "it is just a trip arround the block".

In my country the child seat is mandatory until the kid reaches the height of 150 cm.

In the USA it varies state to state. My state says a kid needs to be AT LEAST 8 years of age and 80 pounds. But it is remarkable, many people don't have the seat installed correctly or the child put in wrong. I had to take classes for child seat safety (I do foster care) and something a lot of people don't think of is winter coats and pants. They are incredibly puffy and you think the child is secure but they are made of air. The child can easily slip though when they are all bundled up. If someone is getting ready for baby, they should look for a class or in my area you can go to the fire department and have them look at how the child seat is installed to make sure it's in correctly.

Keep in mind that she was also driving a Honda, and that company has always had some of the highest safety standards in the business. People, when you replace your car, ALWAYS take a look at their safety ratings and crash test results. If the car you can afford doesn't have the best rating, then WAIT - save until you have the money to get one that's safe. This isn't just for your kids, it's for you, too. .... I wonder how fast the other driver was going in that accident? To crumple up a car like that it looks to have been at least 50 mph.
