Ungrateful Girl Throws Pencil Case Mom Bought Her In The Trash, Learns A Lesson When Mom Replaces It With A Ziploc Bag

From a comfy bed to a hot shower, we take a lot of stuff for granted. So our mind preoccupies us with thoughts about the things we don’t have. And makes us miserable. We need to fight it, and a good way to rebel against these negative impulses is reminding ourselves to value the little things around us. Like a pencil box.

When Haley Hassell from Cantonment, Florida, bought her daughter Presleigh a L.O.L. Surprise! Pencil Box, she thought the little girl will like it. However, instead of being grateful for the present, the girl said it was stupid because a lot of her classmates already had it.

Fighting her anger, Haley came up with a brilliant way to give Presleigh a wake-up call. The mom gave her a Ziploc bag instead. Afterward, she shared the reasoning behind her actions to Facebook, and parents applauded her quick thinking. So far, the post has received over 134K likes and 60K shares, and let’s hope Presleigh appreciates the lesson as much as the internet did.

Haley said that Presleigh is all over the place. But in a totally good way. “Her teachers and grandparents would say she’s a perfect angel but everyone who gets to know her knows she can be a little firecracker who loves to dance, sing, and ride horses and she wants to be a YouTube star,” the mom told Bored Panda. “She made a channel when she was 4 but we haven’t really ever made videos since posting the original 2 years ago.”

“She’s also very resilient and understanding. It has been only me and her since she was a baby. As a single mom working full time and in nursing school up until graduating last year, I couldn’t be with her as much as I wanted sometimes but she has always understood and told me how much she loves me.”

Eventually, the L.O.L. Surprise! Pencil Box went to a family in Arkansas along with some other supplies. “A mom wrote to me that she saw the article, saying she agreed with me because she couldn’t afford any supplies for her kids to start school with. So I instantly decided if she wanted the pencil box for her daughter then it was hers and she did.”

“So we mailed the box and all the school supplies from the list I found online for the school district the family lived in to her,” Haley said. She thinks buying the school supplies for those kids and mailing everything put things into perspective for Presleigh. “She realized we may have been the reason those children had the supplies they needed to start back to school and that she had never had to worry about things like that.”

It looks like in the end, everyone got what they needed the most.

People applauded Haley’s quick thinking

I am definitely not a fan of that "let's take a picture of our child doing something stupid/being scolded and post it on the Internet" trend. My parents have a photo of me as a child being totally irrational and it makes me cringe each time I see it. Luckily for me, it is hidden in our photo box tucked away in cupboard. Internet is forever. This little girl will live with that photo, and that mistake, for the rest of her life. Don't get me wrong, she totally deserved the scolding. But I am fed up with those parents who use every opportunity to get some attention on social media, even if it is detrimental to their child. Raising your child should be your focus in its own. What message do you send them if, caughting them painting the TV white or covering their sibling in Nutella, the first thing you do is grabbing your phone to take a picture, smiling?

Absolutely. What is described here is behaviour of a child that seems irrational to an adult. Teaching her to value belongings can be done without shaming and without guilt!

Forget growing up - you think some of her classmates' parents aren't going to show their children? I'd have hated for my mom to put everything wrong I did online for my friends to see & make fun of me.

That was pretty much my reaction too - always get what she wants and then some is why she's reacted this way in the first place. Putting it on the internet is also not right.

I have a sister with a name that has a less common spelling - she gets sick of spelling it out all the time. Parents don't think about that when trying to be original.

While I appreciate that she's trying to "pass on" valuable parenting information, I can't help to think it could have been done without showing the child's face or taking several pictures. Once your kids pic is out there..it's for life. It's kind of sad...trying to be a good parent by teaching her to appreciate what she has, while at the same time being a bad parent for exposing her mistake to the world. It would have been ok to relay the info without humiliating the girl.

Lots of people on here think the same, so forget your unethical desire to gets the clicks in no matter what and do the right thing. This is wrong because of public sharing private problems: "When Haley Hassell from Cantonment, Florida, bought her daughter Presleigh " + it's her fb account where are also closest friends and family. You understand that now everyone knows who is that girl and that she will be victim of bullying at school because of her bad mom? This story could be told without using real names, addresses and pictures. Do you know that media covers face of underage people? Sharing someones pictures without their permission is illegal by law and also should be illegal to post picture of your kid in this form (and probably is). This mom just want to be popular. Family problems should stay within family, that aren't public problems. Poor little girl can't even count on her mom. P.S. That mom just cyber bullied her daughter.

What if another child who is a bully has that same pencil bag and is mean towards this little girl so she associates it with a bad person? At her age it's hard to articulate what drives all emotions and reactions. Way overboard, mom - and this public shaming? Abhorrent.

Who's the entitled, shameful person here? The mother. She was over the top in how she addressed her daughter's action. I agree it had to be dealt with, but through discussion first, and then consequences -- but not the overreaction this mother had. Young children's brains are still in the process of developing a moral compass. This child's behaviour was rude and selfish. That doesn't mean she's entitled or a brat or selfish and rude all try one.

I often remove things from my kids that they treat like c**p. I also lecture them whenever they act like little princesses and treat me like a slave. Thankfully it doesn't happen often, probably because I don't put up with it. You know what I don't do? Shame them for the world to see. I also don't rush to Facebook or Twitter to tell the world what an awesome parent I am because I did what millions of parents do every single day.

Bored Panda: This is a great example of bad journalism. You should be ashamed of yourselves. As a journalist I can tell you that every media outlet I've worked for would not publish this story -- no less publish her face, her crying face. A parenting tip: you never label a child, you deal with the child's behaviour. Your title calls her an "ungrateful child." That's so wrong and so cruel. Yes, the child's behaviour was ungrateful. However, for you and the mother to shout to the world that she's an ungrateful person, well, that's where the real shame is. She's a little kid, for goodness sake! She's still learning right from wrong. In fact, children's brains are still growing at that age. Their brains are still developing their moral compass. Do you know anything about parenting? About growing children? Clearly not. Are you parents? I hope not. I'm relieved to see that most of the Pandas have a sense of what being a good, responsible and kind parent is.

What has the world come to when a parent throws their kid under the bus (including their photos) for being a kid in a "mommy rant"? This stuff should remain private. More about mommy getting 15 minutes and likes on social media. What happens when other mommy's in that town see this, tell their kids, and then the little girl is teased, especially about the crying photo? Kids are brutal. Things need to remain private.

What do some mothers need validation from the internet when they believe they've made a ground-breaking parenting decision? The ungrateful child deserved a consequence for her rotten, entitled behaviour but she did not deserve to be shamed on the internet. In 20 years when her employer googles her names, this story will come up.

Dangerous to label your child at such a young age as "entitled", when you're most likely the person entitling them in the first place as love. I'm a dad, and I spoil my kid all the time and it's directly related to how entitled he is. This is work done together, not pointing fingers.

If the girl asked for this particular case and then changed her mind, a zip bag is well deserved. But if the girl did not ask for this case, it is mom's problem, that she decided to buy this item and jumped over her head to find it. Kids don't have to love everything we buy them, they have their own taste, you know.

Yeah, but the kid taking it and throwing it in the trash, herself is the issue (at least to me). It's one thing to not like or want something, but to be as petulant to say, your effort is garbage...is a bit over the top. Sure she's a child, but even children have to learn that their actions have ramifications.

To ask of you on here bashing this Mom. Make sure you look in your own closets. It's fine that you have an opinion but you definitely don't need to express it here. Tell her good job Mom and move on. You are doing no different than what you're complaining about she did. Maybe she didn't expect it to go viral. Absolutely perfect for teaching a life lesson. That child is apparently spoiled (as a lot of only children are), so parents have to be extra vigilant that they do not turn out to be spoiled, entitled brats. You are on the right road. Also, why does she want to be a you tube star, that is c**p. Perhaps lay off the you tube videos.

For all the people who have read the article above and the comments below....the truth is that this is a fabricated article with 2 paid actors pretending to be mother and daughter..no parent who loves their child, would post personal details on social media for the world to read...or even discuss it with strangers or friends...this article is meant to make people think and reconsider their actions and interactions with their loved ones...the people who won't think, will blindly follow this mother's actions and discipline their children in a similar manner...it is not meant to be inspirational..it's meant to either damage family values or strengthen family values, based on the person who is reading it and the way they handle a similar situation in reality, versus an article that's published online...children think very differently from adults and communicate differently...I feel sympathy for all the single parents out there, but it doesn't justify these sadistic acts!!

I think what the child was trying to say, in her own limited capacity, is that she no longer wants it because everyone else in her class already got one. She's probably wondering why she was last to receive something and was already made to feel embarrassed for not having it earlier by her classmates. The mother's reaction is miles beyond the point where they could've had a better conversation about this whole thing.

I agree with everything that happened here except for the social media posting. I understand that we want kids to be respectful, but shaming them on social media is not the way to go about it. I am sure this kid is grateful for everything she has, but she is also 5 years old. 5 year olds are not the most rational beings on the planet. What seems great to you may not be great to them. This woman needs to stop thinking about all of the things she has done for this child and just love her.

Mommy feels entitled to a perfect child and thinks that doing her job by not getting mad and teaching her kid that being an ungrateful brat is something special. Why on Earth would you go to several stores to get something YOU feel she likes and then get mad when she actually doesn't? Because that's what this little rant was about. I studied child development and childcare studies and this is harmful. Not the lesson itself, but how you use the intrrnet to applaud yourself being a good mother and shaming your child on the internet. Badly done mom, badly done. If you need a pat on the head, go seek a mother support group. Do not seek appreciation from strangers with a story the child will have to hear from when searching for a job or so.

The mother could have communicated with the child and explained how she felt etc...the child also probably reacted in such a way because if the mother shamed her publicly on social media, she probably did this in the past too in reality....maybe there's a pattern here and the child's behavior could have been a reflection of what she's faced while growing up...I don't think any child would throw anything in the thrash unless there's some sort of a damaged relationship between the two..and it's still highly unbelieavable and far fetched that a child of that age would behave in such a way.. we can't assume anything here and since this is a fabricated article, people need to learn what NOT to do while dealing with family...such articles are meant to make you ponder and reflect...NOT imitate or applaud or emulate such kind of behavior...!!

Seems like a great idea. Wish more parents wouldn't coddle kids to expect anything they want an a tantrum gets it because they win with it. Kids need to know about money and time and gifts that take time to give to make someone feel special. I'd say get another case an ask her who she thinks would like it and let her give that away too. But you did that and ziplocks are good because she won't play with it all day and can see what is in it faster than the others too.

Presleigh is a name that sets a girl on a certain path. Presleigh will most likely be a cheerleader, the most popular girl in school, go to college and mommy will give her a SUV for her sweet 16. She will drop out, because she reaches 15K insta followers and decides that that is enough to travel the world as an social media artist / influencer. Well...she will probably end up in Porn XD

Isn't it bad enough she named the poor thing Presleigh, she now has to find new ways to publicly humiliate her? Some kids have it rough. Also that janky all caps writing on the ziplock speaks volumes to me about this woman's mind.. wow.

Joi, it's absolutely wrong to label a child -- in general. You call her out on the behaviour, which, yes, was ungrateful and rude. She is not an ungrateful and rude child. Calling a little girl a privileged, entitled brat is really cruel and wrong. I'm sure you weren't perfect as a child. I hope you weren't labelled as a bad child because your behaviour wasn't always good.

I don't stand for lying or bulling. My sister however topped all of these lessons when she caught her daughter not only lying to the babysitter, but she also lied to her mother when she asked her about it. My sister told her daughter that because she choose to lie to two people, that she would not be having her birthday party as planned . She had to call all the kids that had been invited and tell them the party was canceled and why, she then had to call the bakery and cancel her own birthday cake. The lady at the bakery thought it might be a joke until my sister told her it was true. It was a hard lesson to learn and tough parenting but as a single mother, she nipped that behavior in the bud and my niece didn't lie to her again.

Kudos to you for being a strong parent. Poo to the folks below that believe you shouldn't have shamed her on social media. By posting your hard lesson for your daughter to learn it may be the message that some other parent needs to see and hear. There are too many children that think they are above the rules. We had a foster daughter living with us for a while who once said to me "rules are stupid and I don't think I should have to follow them." I asked her how that was working out for her considering she was grounded at the time for lying to me. She also had a sleep over with 4 girls from her class after a few hours of being at our home one of the girls comes upstairs crying, wanting to go home because the other girls were being mean to her. I went downstairs and asked what happened, they confessed that they had been mean and were bulling her. I told them to pack up their stuff that the party was over. I drove each of them home and told their parents what happened.

While I appreciate that she's trying to "pass on" valuable parenting information, I can't help to think it could have been done without showing the child's face or taking several pictures. Once your kids pic is out there..it's for life. It's kind of sad...trying to be a good parent by teaching her to appreciate what she has, while at the same time being a bad parent for exposing her mistake to the world. It would have been ok to relay the info without humiliating the girl.

Absolutely perfect for teaching a life lesson. That child is apparently spoiled (as a lot of only children are), so parents have to be extra vigilant that they do not turn out to be spoiled, entitled brats. You are on the right road.

Online shaming isn't okay. Good job otherwise but as so many have said, internet is forever.

This is a great lesson for the child. This could have easily been shared without a picture of the child and the child's name.

I am the only one have a whole album of all my stupid actions during my younger time and having fun show people and laugh along? Those are me and my stupid mistake, I think it is important that we accept who we are and cherish all those memories instead of hating that old'self.

Mommy who felt entitled to gratefulness. Yuk.

She looks a bit like a tomboy - maybe she just hates that girly s**t printed all over it. Maybe learn what your kid likes and stop shaming her online.

Ugh no need to biblically shame your daughter. Everyone acts bratty sometimes. Also...did you call your offspring " Presleigh"?? Poor kid.

Presleigh?? Really?! You are that mom who has to think her kid will be special by giving some kind of 'different' name. Wow... the picture of you really does say 1000 words and no wonder your daughter is already a brat

I don't like this public shaming trend on bored panda. It's already pathetic with the usual "entitled bride" and people who want stuff for free... And now kids ....

What is 'Madea mad'? I wonder if it is not some sort of garbled, clueless reference to Medea?

Just calling it out... pretty sure this appeared on Bored Panda well over a year ago. Not an original story! Let's quit recycling stuff... it's happening more and more these days.

Also that janky all caps writing on the ziplock speaks volumes to me about this woman's mind.. wow.

I can tell that some people have never had a mom do this for them (notice I said for them, not TO them)...and it shows.

what do you expect from a privileged, entitled brat with a ludicrous name and a momma more fixated on mommy blogging and buying stuff than trying to raise a compassionate child.

I would have consoled her, bought a second pencil case, then given it to a rabid pit bull to tear apart, all whilst I was filming it.

And you consider this a value worth teaching? That whoever uses physical violence is right?

This dumb b***h turned her kid into a target for every bully, school official, potential boss, and pedophile that has access to the internet. She published her own name, her kid's name and all but gave them the address.

Start working at home with Google. That is the thing that I did most monetarily fulfilling. Friday, I had an incredible Audi 5 in the wake of winning $ 25,410 a month ago. Truth be told, I began five months prior and very quickly announced at any rate $ 96 60 minutes. visit this site............ more55.com
