Proud Mom Claps Back After Photo Of Her Hugging Son Post-Game Raises Eyebrows

On August 18, a woman known as Amber Wright posted a video on Instagram of herself hugging her 16-year-old son Brixton, her legs wrapped around him, after an intense football game in Utah.

Though she intended to capture an emotional moment with her “baby boy,” as she referred to him in the post, and show how proud she was of his achievement, she quickly faced backlash among social media users, who accused her of being inappropriate with him.

After Amber Wright shared a video of a hug with her son following a football game in Utah, people pointed to the controversial nature of the embrace

Since then, the video has been played over 9 million times, and Amber’s Instagram follower count has grown exponentially from 1,500 to 25,000 users.

The caption under the viral embrace read, “This boy will forever and always have my entire heart. Gina captured the end of this moment, and I’m so grateful. When I walked up to hug my baby boy after his game, he immediately picked me up and just held me.”

“I honestly don’t know what I did to deserve you @brix_wright, but I am thankful every second of every single day with you,” she concluded.

Amber was forced to defend herself against social media users who deemed the hug inappropriate

The celebration marked a sensitive occasion for Brixton. The game was the first time the young athlete wore a football jersey with the number 44, representing his father’s death date (April 4th), on the field.

As Amber explained, Brixton lost his father to suicide due to alcoholism when he was 15 years old.

The football player didn’t take long to defend his mother in response to social media criticism. On his Instagram account, he wrote, “How about you leave my mom alone. She’s never abused me, done anything sexual with me or my friends, or groomed me. She’s my mom. She’s my hero,” he shared.

He also emphasized that there wasn’t anything controversial about the family celebration or their mother-son bond. “The video of us hugging was a HUG. Go bother someone else and maybe hug your own kids. You all need Jesus, damn.”

Brixton, Amber’s sixteen-year-old son, responded to online criticism

In a video uploaded on September 17, Amber recorded herself responding to what she called “disgraceful,” “crude,” and “outlandish” comments left on the viral video.

“We live in a society where we are preaching that we should all love one another. It just seems very hypocritical.[…] I would never go on somebody else’s page and pick them apart, degrade them, and disrespect them.”

Additionally, the mother stated that she wouldn’t change her relationship with her son despite the offensive remarks they’ve both received online.

“If you’re one of the people who happens to see something immoral or sexual or wrong with it, then I’m just going to say that’s on you,” the single mother and physician assistant commented on Instagram.

After all, she says, she was just “a proud mom hugging her kid.”

While some social media users expressed their disapproval of the hug, others supported the viral mother-and-son moment

What is with people projecting their skewed and potentially perverted views onto others innocent behaviours? There is nothing sexual there, it is a mother over joyed for and proud of her son, get a grip you freaks.

Have you seen this woman's posts? She's an attention seeker. Every one of her profile pics of just her; is her with at least half her tit out. This is for attention. Plain and simple.

If you see something like that, and immediately think it's sexual, you need serious help. That was just a hug, she was clearly very happy and proud of her son

She jumped on him then tried to claim he picked her up. Waxed poetically about how "time stood still" she is sexualizing her son all on her own.

It's because mom is skinny and pretty. They are projecting their lust/jealousy of the mom onto the situation. If she were a homely, overweight mom, nobody would have batted an eye. Good for her telling everyone to get stuffed.

Exactly! She’s getting this much attention because of her looks first and then her actions - if she looked more like a ‘mum’ no one would bat an eye

Imagine thinking every touch has a sexual meaning, that's just sad. Both my teenage son and daughter sometimes pick me up and carry me because they can and we all think it's hilarious and fun.

Do you take pictures and talk about how "time stood still" while they carried you around? Do you also claim they picked you up when you obviously jumped up on them? There would be the difference

Pro tip from a medical doctor: People who assume a situation is sexual are either 1. in need of therapy due to traum aor 2. the people who cause such trauma. Either way, everyone take a deep breath, and find a support group.

At first glance, it come across as having a sexual vibe. She said she started to hug him, and he picked her up. At this point, a non-sexual vibe hug would be to keep your legs straight, not move up into the straddle position. Having said that though, they have the right to have their own means of expressing care for each other. Given the son doesn't feel embarrassed and is defending her/them, then everyone needs to shut it.

It's definitely not her looks, if she picked him up, that would be different, but jumping onto him still weird IMO but I never thought sexual esp since I first saw the pic and headline said she's his mother.

While there absolutely is nothing intrinsically wrong with it, I have to say it looks a little "off". I hug and kiss my children, even the two grown ones, all the time. I think it's the legs kinda wrapped around him that throws it off, as a mother and son. Although, I agree that because she's attractive and not dressed dowdy it looks more boyfriend -girlfriend. That's totally not fair, of course. Didn't say it was right, just said it was so.

She's very youthful looking so that may have had something to do with the responses. Everyone has different ways of showing emotion/love. The son, in his response, makes it clear that he's fine with his mom.

If you think this is sexual, you've been around the wrong people for too long. Or deprived of appropriate physical contact.

I think the problem a lot of people had, is on her page she openly talks about her sons friends using her photos to self pleasure, she is fine with this knowledge. That and her jumping all over her son doesn’t sit well with a lot of people.

The biggest underlying issue in the negative comments comes from gender stereotypes which perpetuate inequality. If it were the mother’s daughter or another female in general doing this, individuals wouldn’t think anything of it. Similarly, individuals would pay no attention to a 16-year-old daughter jumping into her father’s arms. Many individuals/families show they care, support, and love through physical contact, and their intent is far from fulfilling a sexual urge. Individuals who are uncomfortable with this display of emotion and affection likely have past sexual trauma, or have built very stereotypical, rigid rules they apply to everyone. There is a significant cultural aspect as well. It’s very ignorant to base everyone’s behavior on one narrow perspective.

I don't see it being sexual but wouldn't want my mom jumping on me like that. Children do that with their parents when they are small enough more commonly and there's nothing weird. Puberty stops that kind of thing mostly. People who are not related do that when they feel close to another person or at least want to be, in my opinion. It might have sexual tension or not. If a girl would jump on someone else's husband or someone's wife jumped on some guy's lap who's stranger to the husband, in both cases I think most people would feel at least a bit confused or even negative about it. In this distinct situation I just find it to be weird reaction. In some cultures it's common to kiss your children on lips so each to their own
