You can pick your friends, but you can’t pick your family. When you get married, you’re not just gaining a spouse, you’re getting their whole family in the deal. That includes a mother-in-law who might rub you the wrong way.

One woman’s mother-in-law is particularly toxic, going so far as to tell her son he should get a divorce because of his wife’s fertility issues. Deeply disturbed by her parental opinion, he’s since sent his mom packing but now wonders if that was a jerk move.

More info: Reddit

Mothers-in-law have a bad reputation, as this guy’s mom proved with her outlandish request

The guy and his wife had been trying to have a baby for years and recently started IVF treatment

His mom walked in on him giving his wife her IVF injection and proclaimed it was against God’s will

She then went so far as to tell her son to divorce his wife and find someone who could give him a baby the way God intended

The guy immediately told her to pack her stuff and find another place to live, but now his family is furious at him and he’s wondering if telling his mom to get lost was a jerk move

OP begins his story by telling the community that he and his wife have been together for 13 years and married for 5. He adds that his mother has been staying with the couple for the last 4 months because she’s currently separated from OP’s dad and will probably be getting divorced.

He goes on to say that he and his wife have been trying to have a baby for the last 4 years and have recently started IVF. One of the necessary medications for this is an injection, which OP gives his wife.

Well, OP’s mom is one of those people who doesn’t believe in IVF and, after walking in on her son giving her daughter-in-law her injection, muttered that it’s against God’s will.

OP immediately pulled her out of the room and told her she needed to quit giving her unwanted opinion. That’s when she had the audacity to tell him he should divorce his wife and find someone who could give him a baby the way God intended.

Now at the end of his rope, OP told her to get her stuff, get out, and go stay at her husband or his sister’s place.

His mom kicked up a teary fuss, telling OP she was just trying to do what was best for him, but he remained unmoved. Now his sister’s telling him he’s a [jerk], so he turned to the web to find out whether that’s true.

What is it about mothers-in-law that makes them think they always know what’s best for their children? Whether they’re on your wife’s or husband’s side, they just seem to have a knack for acting entitled or downright toxic, even if you’re an adult quite capable of making your own choices and decisions.

Image credits: Nicola Barts / Pexels (not the actual photo)

In her article for Choosing Therapy, Tricia Johnson writes that toxic people typically use subtle methods of control and manipulation in relationships, and, with mothers-in-law, this toxicity might or might not be apparent to others—particularly their own children. This form of behavior can be deeply negative and invalidating, resulting in issues like anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.

According to Johnson, with toxic mothers-in-law, they usually display a repeating pattern of negativity toward other family members, such as manipulation, control, or abusive behavior. The mother-in-law’s actions can be intentional but could also be rooted in behaviors learned from her own family of origin.

Johnson lists 12 signs of a toxic mother-in-law, some of which include not respecting boundaries, always thinking she’s right, being passive-aggressive, gossiping, being impossible to please, and causing you to doubt yourself.

In her article for Marriage.com, Anne Duvaux suggests 11 ways to deal with a toxic mother-in-law, including keeping yourself emotionally distant, avoiding triggering her, avoiding self-judgment, remaining true to yourself, and allowing your partner to step in.

While you may never be able to change your mother-in-law, at least you can control how you respond to her actions, however toxic they may be. OP has proven he certainly won’t tolerate her belligerent behavior even if she is his mom.

What would you have done if you’d found yourself in OP’s shoes? Do you think his mom was out of line or did he pull a jerk move? Let us know your opinion in the comments!

In the comments, readers swiftly concluded that the guy wasn’t the jerk in the situation and that his mom had no right to criticize the couple’s personal choices

When will parents learn....YOUR KIDS OWE YOU NOTHING. You chose to become a parent, they didn't choose to be born, they didn't sign a contract saying they owed their parents grandchildren and free lodgings and being a doormat to mental/emotional abuse. You have children to pour your love and experience and wisdom into this little person, raise them right then send them out into the world to live THEIR life. Your own life is your own responsibility, no one owes you a damn thing except your pension. This "I birthed you so I own you so you owe me everything" attitude is so entitled and immature.

So, I don't think we have to look hard to figure out why "mom's" marriage is failing. She's deeply stupid, entirely self absorbed and has no self control. I don't think I'd want a woman like that anywhere near any potential children I had. She a terrible example of a woman and a human being. It's best just to go no contact and move on. They''ll be happier without having to engage in the drama of an obvious narcissist. I'd tell sister that if she has a problem with that, there's plenty of room on the "no contact bus" for her too.

I bet his mother doesn't wear glasses, drive/use a car, or use a microwave. By her logic, none of those are "the way God intended". F**k her. IVF was a years-long long, often heartbreaking process that eventually led to the birth of my beautiful daughter. F**k anyone who looks down on IVF.

I hope to hell or highwater this YTA fuggnut will never have kids, whether wanted or not. I'm not a parent but I've seen my fair share of people struggling with conceiving, emphasis on struggling. Rather than be a superficially pious POS, mother should have appreciated OP and wife's efforts in giving her a grandchild and along with it, a legacy. If that superficial excuse of a mother is so adamant on a natural birth, maybe she ought to force her equally cr*ptrap daughter to pop one out instead. People, ugh!!!

I will never understand how some people complain that religion is 100% real and you must follow it. But then also turn around and try to say things like a miraculous invention of medicine or something is unnatural instead of thinking of it as in somebody was gifted the ability to come up with something so great to help people. I'm not even religious but I can't imagine somebody having their head so far in the dirt.

This. However you believe humans ended up with our intelligence, either through non-supernatural means or directly or indirectly from G-d, it is a gift. Why shouldn’t we be allowed to use it to invent modern medicine, including IVF, therefore helping a truly countless number of people live better lives? For those that believe in G-d, isn’t that what G-d would want us to do, to help others?

Imagine you are in front of god and telling them. "You made people that have no "purpose". So I can throw them away for those who you made with "purpose" right! Even as they try to fix your intentional mistake... they are wrong in doing so... they have to suffer because that is what you want!" Imagine a god exists... Imagine they are actually virtuous and good... You create something with a free will that despite your omnipotence, you can't predict...and they hit you with morality and logic of that level... Are certain humans just incapable of understanding that unless they try to understand and analyise something there is no way to know if it is good or evil...

Ok, let me put it this way as an ex-chritian athiest, i don't beleive in this gods will is all pregnancies must be through natural conception. if it wasn't gods will that people have IVF, then her god would have insured NONE of the early IVF methods worked, absoultely none, all the way down the line. and when it is god's will, the process works, without having to resort to surrogacy and donor eggs, simple. then point out alledgely god's into artifical conception ergo, the so called virgin Mary, who was alledgedly artifically impregnanted, to produce jesus, because they made such a big freaking deal out of her virginsl status, as a mother, right. so god put the idea of artifical conception into peoples heads, (not the bible did that). simple, end of story.

OP, NTA - you've have had conversations before with your mom & she won't back off so she's now found out what the consequences are of disrespecting you & your wife, out of her concern for what's best for you. Huh, so, SHE knows what's best for you & you don't. You're a wonderful husband for standing up for what YOU & your WIFE have decided to do, which is nobody else's business. Of course, your wife is getting the blame for everything & she doesn't need the stress. It's a blessing that things came to a head & mom is out of the house. Do not let her come back. And when you do have a child via IVF or some other method, what is her attitude toward your precious baby going to be? "Spawn of Satan"? It's not what a YTA said abt "old people" (FFS she's 52) having different ideas - she's gotten into some kind of wacky religion. I'm not particularly religious but it's pretty easy to stop people in their illogical tracks when they decide they can speak as to God's or Jesus' will or wishes: "Mom, who do you think put doctors on Earth & gave them the knowledge & ability to help people with things like this?" "Mom, I know how much you want to have grandchildren & I wonder if He's working thru us, not being able to have a child yet, to punish you for something." "Where exactly is it in the Bible that yells how you're supposed to conceive?" Sure, she's"having a hard time" & "is family," but family should treat each other with at least as much respect as they'd give anybody else. Best to you both.

Once again, the YTAs show us just how idiotic they are. I once had the pleasure of defending my best friend when her mother was against IVF (her mother is SUPER religious and "God Fearing..." I tried to reason (I'm not religious) with her that God created man, He created life and a reason for man. Thus, by that reasoning, God created doctors and scientists, and I even threw in something about free-will. It was a much longer discussion, and in the end, I think I just confused her. lol But I was told she did lay off them for a few weeks. Yay for confusion. Oh, and the second try (1st time was not) was successful! And guess who dotes over said grandchild that was made from love and science!!

That YTA guy: seriously? "All old people are the same" and his mom "can't think beyond her years"?? People CAN learn, and although it's harder for old people it IS possible - and when it isn't (like apparently with this gem) it likely won't happen in the future either. What did OP's mother do to have earned the privilege of bullying his wife? "Handle the women seperately": that only works if you keep them apart. One visit from mom, one family party and the heat is on. Wanna keep wifey in the kitchen and mom in the living room? Or wifey with the guests and mom on the porch? Seperating them NOW and permanently by kicking mom out is the only way. LC until mom LEARNS, or NC.

danhemmington, this isn't the 1500s fool, the fact that idiots says it's gods will is an absolute disgrace! Any woman in this day and age that believes that infertility is a woman's problem are clueless and disgusting! She's 52 not 92 and even then, you have to be pretty stupid to believe it's all a woman's fault. You can't treat your sons wife like this over and over again a keep getting away with it. The fact that the wife is getting the blame for being kicked out by his own sister, shows she's got the same thoughts! The "gods will" is an absolute load of shite anyway! Anyone who lives by gods will are toxic in the extreme. Who do people like think they are? Insufferable uneducated idiots some of them!

I hate these obviously either fake stories or they are written in a way so they can read all the admiration they get. Of course he doesn't wonder if he is the AH just off of how he wrote the thing. He knows his mom is out of line, he kicked her out, and went on to let us know he only respects and defends his wife always. And supposedly bc the sister called him an AH now he's questioning everything? Nah, it's either fake or he wants some praise from the internet. Also bf ppl come at me and say how I'm a cynic or whatever I have seen people prove that they were the author of dozens and dozens of AITA Reddit posts all with diff names, situations, gender, etc etc. just fake.

Or some people are a lot less confident in themselves than you are. Not everyone has the guts and high self esteem to know they are always in the right and thus will doubt themselves. The story may be fake, yes, but if your only factor you have is "they aren't confident standing up for themselves." Then... I have bad news for you. Many people aren't. Especially considering his family, it looks like standing up for ones self is discouraged, making it a learnt behaviour to just accept it. Yes. Some people WILL question themselves when people they love inform them they are an a*hole. Maybe not you, but some people will.

Anorexia has most likely damaged her hormonal balance for good. They may need to look into surrogacy (if legal in their country) or adoption.

NTA. Dear old mom will just have to seek life elsewhere if she insists on behaving like this to the very people providing a roof over her head.

My parents are old but they’re awesome and not conservative. They’re boomers (Lionel Hutz smiling), not Boomers (Lionel Hutz frowning).

hopefully they'll be successful, and they can get the satisfaction of telling her that technically she's not got a grandchild because they were born against gods will. any time she mentions "my grandchild" correct her.

danhemmington, this isn't the 1500s fool, the fact that idiots says it's gods will is an absolute disgrace!
