It is considered that criticizing modernity is the business of boomers. Older people, for example, are well aware that in the past, films were way more interesting, friendships were stronger, the sky bluer, and in general the whole world was much better than it is now. On the other hand, the modern world could be a tad bit better than it really is.

At the end of the 20th century, many scientists believed that the new one would become the golden age of mankind - and indeed, with the rapid development of technology, medicine, and the growth of total comfort, one could really expect something like that. But in fact, we are now about as far from the "golden age" as we were a quarter of a century ago. But why?

Perhaps the problem is that modernity is full of not-so-comfortable and pleasant trends. For example, recently on the AskReddit community, someone asked the question "What modern trend do you absolutely hate?" The thread went viral, gaining nearly 26K upvotes and over 19.5K comments in just a few days. It turned out that a variety of people, both old and young, are dissatisfied with many things in the world that surrounds us now.

Bored Panda has compiled for you a selection of the most interesting and thought-provoking opinions from this viral thread. So feel free to scroll to the very end, and be sure to write what you think about it. Perhaps you are also unhappy with something that we missed, in which case we definitely have to know!

I prefer to think of it as "consequence culture". It's true that people change, and making a rude joke 20 years ago shouldn't be the end of someone's career. But if someone shows a consistent pattern of negative behavior over many years with no evidence of growth (like being an unapologetic racist) it's fair for the public to decide they don't want to support that person any more. And in most instances the person isn't actually canceled- people like JK Rowling are still mega millionaires with fans all over the world. She still has the support of her publisher and Warner Bros. Nobody is actually canceling her.

But the post specifically said "something they did 30 years ago". If they have not broken any laws and said something ignorant years ago that they regret, they do not need to be cancelled now. If they are still unapologetically racist, sexist, or something more than rude then yes, they need to have something happen to them.

There's nothing wrong with losing interest in a celebrity or public figure who has done something you vehemently disagree with...BUT...some people are far too invested in what celebrities say or do online. Any misstep or snippy comment someone makes while in a bad mood could ruin their career. It's just too overblown. People need to get life of their own and stop obsessing over damn post online. Who freaking cares?

If you haven't changed in the last 30 years....then no growth has happened which is way worse.

In my country 20 years ago: 16y/o "I'm gonna buy a case of beer and a pack of cigarettes!" Back then it was perfectly normal *and* legal. Now they have to be 18 to buy both. In 10 years time it'll be illegal to smoke at all. In 15 years time you're going to cancel this person because he smoked at 16 and was open about it? Not only do people change, but also what's socially acceptable. We've got to stop looking at the past with today's eyes. Yes we did things in the past, that's now unacceptable. But it is *not* a reason to judge us now.

That isn't the same thing at all. Of course laws change. Cancel culture is blocking or excluding someone for what is viewed today as a socially unacceptable opinion, usually a current opinion but it is sometimes the past. Who has been slammed for a law around drinking or smoking that they followed in the past but today would be illegal because the goalposts moved?

Cancel culture to me donates how afraid people are of other opinions. They clearly feel threatened. Probably because, as children, they mollycoddled and don't understand how to deal with situations where there are either perceived or actual threats.

Or...they do not want to give their money to someone who is a bigot. Period. I dont care if someone thinks that people like me are inferior...have that opinion all you want...but do NOT whine about "cancel culture" when I refuse to go to your place of business, support your projects and actively encourage others who may find your views disgusting, to do so. You act as if because a person has an opinion, others have to bend over and take it. I was not "mollycoddled"...but if I find that you hate Black people, hate women, hate gays...HELL NO I am not patronizing anything having to do with you..."differing opinion" or not.

Slamming people for not agreeing with what's supposed to be "politically correct". We don't have to tolerate aggressive or offensive behaviour, but every person has the right to think what they want. We must respect everybody, but we are not obliged to agree with them.

Ended up finding one that is actual scientific study showing downsides to vaccination but the language was over both our heads because it was legit. End of the day we found the dumbed down version and it basically said based on their study allergic reaction rates night be higher than originally assumed for one specific vaccine. I told him I dont think an opinion is well researched if you can't understand the evidence that you use to support your claim

I can understand an independent seller, or very, very small upstart business. But never heard of a bigger business referring people to their facebook. I hate businesses referring people to their website rather than simply speaking with people is on here. It's so anti-social and rude for a company to do that to customers and potential clients. I want to hear tone and understand context.

As someone who designs websites for a living, I cannot disagree more. It is far better to have no website than to have a poorly designed website, for several reasons. Search engine optimization is an important and hugely overlooked factor, design expertise, the psychology of web design, copywriting, etc. etc. etc. Having a website is about more than just loading all the info and pictures into a template; if it isn't done right, your business will not appear in any search directories, so you won't be able to grow. At least having a facebook business profile helps to get small businesses on the map. It's not just about giving existing customers something to look at, it's about driving new business. A poorly designed website will only hinder that.

Moving the HVAC controls to the screen is just dangerous. Especially the idiotic way VW have done it. My wife has a modern car and while it does have a touchscreen, primary functions can be controlled via the steering wheel buttons and the HVAC controls are dials and buttons

    Kathryn Baylis

I hope the buttons on her steering wheel are easy to memorize by touch. It was always bad enough trying to figure out the controls while driving an unfamiliar car, but at least they were different shapes located in different areas within arm’s reach of the steering wheel—-and did not require taking your eyes off the road to look at a screen to access them. If they really wanted to innovate, they should’ve bypassed by the touchscreen entirely, and made those controls voice activated instead—-yet retained the traditional knobs and make it possible to turn off voice activation to drive manually, and quietly. What kind of odds do you want to lay that, as these cars roll out and are purchased, the number of accidents stemming from this new distraction will greatly increase? Well, unless the touchscreens stop working once the car’s paid off and you’re back to manual, just like certain features did in the past—-remember the automatic seatbelts from the nineties? They were great until they went up and the shoulder belt ended up permanently jammed halfway to your shoulder.

Many Xers take care of old parents/ aunts, uncles. To be fair many Boomers don't have much either, especially if they are POC's. Generation X here, yet we, in the UK are being blamed for, and in particular order, for voting BREXIT, causing the climate change, not allowing younger generations on the property ladder, blamed for not getting the younger generations (I'm looking at you millennials..) well paid jobs, making it more difficult for them to get a car, blah blah blah, Christ, do you think we had it easy?? our generation never blamed boomers....

Yet 61% over 65 voted to leave, a massive group as well. It was primarily boomers, not Gen X with Brexit. Also boomers who are the ones with the paid for property by and large, Gen X mainly have sizable mortgages and are still watching elderly parents totter around large homes (also our adult kids are still at home and we are trying to help them save). As for the climate, how many younger people are forgoing travel, tech, using cycling/public transport instead of driving etc. All big pollutants. Recycling your rubbish is good, but insufficient. Blame isn't helping, we seriously need better solutions.

I'm gen X. Saved for 25+ years to buy my own small house, which also meant moving to a different area and giving up things I enjoyed doing. Things may look easier 30 years ago but it didn't feel that way at the time.

Gen X also had seriously high interest rates on mortgages for years and years. Topped out at around 15% to 17%. I had payments in the 80s that were over £2k a month. That is around £7500 in todays money! I definitely couldn't afford that right now! Tiny property too. We needed less money for deposits back then though, and big mortgages were easy to get hold of! Those things are more difficult for young people today for certain. Life always has its challenges though. We also worried about the IRA bombs and nuclear bombs... some things change and some things never go away sadly.

You can’t try to look something up on the internet anymore without having to Wade through pages and pages of ads to get to actual information. They’ve crapped up the “information superhighway” with too much ugly and useless billboard pollution. It’s become an assault on the eyes and brain, and real frustration for those of us just trying to find the answer to a question.

Thank you! As a person who is bipolar I especially hate it when someone uses this as an excuse. And it seems to me that many of those who diagnose themselves lately do so because they think it's cool to have a mental illness. The flipside is having to watch a tv show or movie where the dangerous criminal is a bipolar lunatic. Either way, it does a disservice to those of us who have to go through the pain of dealing with mental illness day after day.

I'd rather get rid of my Bipolar if possible. I am not self diagnosed. I knew something was wrong when I was 17 (now 34), and my parents brought me to a professional where I was diagnosed. Mental health does not excuse anyone from being an arseh0le. Yeah this is an unpopular thought. It's a mitigating factor yes, but never an excuse. Whoever you unleashed on, still got hurt. They are human beings too. Or should they be too special to be taking any blame for hurting another person. I am saying this from experience. I grew up in a violent household and have serious temper issues. If I seriously maimed or killed someone while I'm raging, should I be excused because of it? It takes decades to overcome. In the meantime, it doesn't mean I am justified to take it out of some poor sap being at the wrong place wrong time.

I don't know if I'm paranoid or if this is a legitimate fear, but I don't like the thought that all my appliances could be sharing my data without my knowledge. In many ways, we, as individuals, are our data, and smart appliances just put that out there. Plus, how many ways can smart appliances go wrong, costing hundreds or thousands of dollars to repair or replace? I just want the fridge to keep my s**t cold. It can be as dumb as a Trumpette to do that.

Gather 'round children, let me tell you a story of...It's not worth it. We have an entirely "smart" home, and while some things are nice (being able to control the lights & thermostat when we're away from home, security cameras, etc.), the novelty wears off, and most of the stuff becomes unnecessarily expensive versions of everyday items with dozens of "features" that never get used. You don't need to control your fridge or toaster oven via wifi, it's much faster to just push a button than opening an app to find the "smart thing" and turn it on. You still have to get up and put the toast in, you're saving nothing.

Growing up in the us, the first political anything I remember was Bill Clinton. Great president, not so great person. Then we had the other George bush, being puppeted by D**k Cheney ruling the world, and starting a 20-year war in the wrong direction, to try to finish what his dad couldn't. Then I was finally old enough to vote the first time Obama came around, and did so the second time. I don't think I need to talk about the 4 years after that, we are completely screwed from that, though our current president isn't doing too much to help us right now either. Whenever I think about politics, in the US at least, I wonder how different things would be here and abroad if Al Gore hadn't "lost" that election.....

The ones that do analysis with thought-provoking commentary can be interesting. But I've seen ones where obviously the person just wants to try to monetize on someone else's video. There's one channel where it's just 2 guys, clearly stoned af, watching South Park clips and laughing a bit.

I quite enjoy watching (genuine) reactions to music or other entertainment that I've enjoyed in the past, because it lets me hear/see/experience that thing through their eyes, bringing back some of my original joy in discovering that piece of entertainment.

Person Asks A Question "What Modern Trend Do You Absolutely Hate?", And 30 People Online Deliver I HATE that modern news is no longer just a informational source of what is happening. It’s turned into a talk show. News networks only cast people who have loud personalities and lean VERY hard one way politically. They only cast people to make the news more popular by finding cast that make you think “I wish I could hand out with them”. NEWS NEEDS TO BE A NEUTRAL PLACE TO GATHER INFORMATION TO MAKE A DECISION FOR YOURSELF. It’s not the f*****g Wendy Williams Show. We don’t care how the anchor feels about it. WE WANT FACTS AND NEUTRAL INFORMATION! *Edit after having a lot of good conversations with y’all-* I wish the consumers of news wanted more straight forward facts and non-bias information. I know that news networks love the views, but it seems to be more entertainment than news.

Well, technically there could be way more news than we are shown, plenty more than enough to fill a day. If we were presented with news from around the world. I realize that news outlets only have so much budget and time, but I’d love to know more of what’s happening around the world and not just in my little bubble. It’s shameful how little I know about the rest of the world.

Hear me out now, kids. Back in my day ('60s-'70s), the actual news was only on for two hours a day, at 6PM EST and 11PM ("It's 11 o'clock, do you know where your children are?"). The only time I remember that being expanded was during Watergate. We didn't need any stinkin' news 24-7, sheesh.

What's more annoying about TV news today is the *sensationalism*. I haven't watched news programs, as a rule, for many years -- but when I stayed with family a few years ago, they still watched news every night, and I was struck by how much it was packaged as such, compared to the TV news I would see when still living with my parents as a kid. It's all carefully geared to stir up emotions, not report the facts. That made me even more thankful I no longer watch that junk.

As a dental hygienist, I do oral cancer screenings and part of that is palpating the lips- augmented lips feel very different from natural lips, not in a good way. Natural lips are consistent in feel with no discernible lumps, and should be soft, elastic and slightly firm. Augmented lips actually feel like there is a hard rope running inside the length of the lip or tiny pearls deep inside when you palpate them (depending on how they're augmented). It's not pleasant to feel- I always wonder how it must feel to kiss someone with that.

I'd even stretch this to celebrity news. I have no real love for celebrities but the lies that are told about them can truly ruin their careers, their personal lives and make it difficult for them to be hired in real life jobs. And there's little to no research done. Even when they agree to an interview, the writer can completely skew what they said out of context. Imagine just trying to be an actor and some news report comes out online about you being a child molester and the source is some random troll on twitter. Now, whether it's true or not, whether you sue and whether or not it's retracted, the story has gone viral and you're forever linked to this article. Any time someone does a search for your name, any time a studio is looking to hire you, ... the number 1 search result is that you molest children. No one should have to deal with that.

Even cars are going subscription model. BMW calls it “Functions on Demand”. If you want heated seats, you can pay for a subscription. You can subscribe from a month, a few years or unlimited. Though I’m pretty sure when someone buys that car second hand again, an unlimited subscription won’t be transferred to the new owner… they will have to buy unlimited again. Just like how Tesla has been deactivating the Ludicrous package from the previous owner so that the next person has to pay again.

I've been considering my own mortality recently and have come to an interesting (I think) conclusion. What it all comes down to in the end, is that we don't actually own anything in the way that we think we do. We regard things as 'ours' like a house or car but it never really belongs to us. Universally, we are borrowing all of our things until we die and then someone else gets to borrow them until they die etc. Think of all the people that may have regarded your home as their home in the past, before you moved in. You may have custody of an item and you may have bought it 'outright' or 'upfront' but when the grim reaper comes knocking, it all gets moved on to another borrower (not to be confused with the little folk on the TV). Purchasing things is the same as leasing them until you die. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts but please don't downvote me to hell. It's a theory not a proposal for a new cult and I'm not hurting anyone with my crazy ideas, I don't think anyway.

The difference is: keep paying until you die or stop paying at some point and use/, enjoy the same product. In both cases they'll go to someone else when you're not around, but in the first case they'll have to pay again (and you won't choose who that person is), and in the second one they'll get something, free of charge, and you designate who should get it. I'm not a crazy capitalist but if l work my a*s off l want at least my child or my friends to enjoy the product of my effort

I said the same thing back in the 90s. Despite being a developer, I do not agree with such monetizing methods because it's simply bad for the industry. Not long after bigger players began buying out or simply bury smaller competitors in lawsuits and start cornering various niches. These companies are now too big to fail and can stifle innovation if they ever see a threat to their market. This is where we are.

seriously. i work full time and make around 15 an hour, have zero subscriptions to anything, and only pay rent and utilities, and I still cant break even. i have to do freelance writing, dog walking, art commissions, yard work,, and occasionally doordash just to cover our utility bills and buy groceries

When I first got into wood working I asked a coworker if he ever sold the really awesome stuff he made. He replied, "Every once in a while, but if I did it for money it becomes a job and looses it's fun." That stuck with me. In the three years I've been turning wood I've sold one thing, and it was to a friend who refused to not pay me.

The direction things are headed, people will have to monetize their hobbies as their main job will not cover the bills (it's already a thing). They won't have a choice unless something changes in the way people are compensated for a full time work.

It's become overwhelming, and strangely ... feeling defeated or dumb. There are people making profits off things I never thought possible. It's giving me this vibe that I need to be scrutinizing everything I do day to day, anything I make, any talent I have, any time I have and see if I could be earning money. But if I'm not earning money or not bothering to take up these ventures I feel lazy, incompetent and a failure.

My cousin is a fantastic artist but draws for herself mostly. Her father looked her dead in the eyes and told her "show me your drawings after you've sold one". Not everything someone does has to be for money and that crushed her.

The problem with NFTs is the token itself may not be fungible but the art itself is. Moreover, the art is not stored in the blockchain so the host holding it can go down and erase your so-called "once-off" or "unique" art piece. Until that's resolved steer clear. Lastly, it's a bit moot. I mean, we might all want an original Van Gogh but I think most of us are happy with a canvas print at the same size. Whether it's REALLY van Gogh's actual hand that made it is not that important to most people. So likewise, If I wanted (big, big IF), if I wanted a bored ape, I can just screenshot your NFT and print it or use it as-is. I do not care that it is the "original".

Non-Fungible Token. A non-fungible token is a financial security consisting of digital data stored in a blockchain, a form of distributed ledger. The ownership of an NFT is recorded in the blockchain, and can be transferred by the owner, allowing NFTs to be sold and traded. I think they're stupid as heck and I could design them all day long if I wanted. I don't want.

I stopped giving my email and phone numbers out to retail staff after learning Canada's Michael's rewards are non-existent. We're not collecting points nor are we able to use them. It's been a few years and staff still don't know when or if we're getting rewards for Michael's arts and crafts. But they still ask for your email address with every purchase. I just say I'm not bothering anymore. Recordings for customer service is only really for training purposes. When new hires are being trained the managers will show examples from real calls (edited to leave out the person's identity of course) and will use good and bad ones. It's also to ensure the reps are doing their job and if there's any discrepancy they have the recording to refer to. Call centres are not distributing these recordings to other 3rd party companies unless it's a client and there's a legal warrant in obtaining that recording. That's all.

Entities that want you to give them your name and email address before they let you see what other information they want. Amtrak tried this, insisting that everyone fill out a Covid questionnaire which you could not review first. If they need this information, surely they could send it along with the ticket, ask you to review it, and email the completed thing back. Because of two things, I never filled one out on any of my trips in the past two years: (1) I tried to go on the website to see the thing, couldn't get on in four tries. Nope. (2) the above, giving my email address without knowing what else they would ask for. Nope. I arrived at Penn Station in New York expecting to have to prove I'd done it. Nope. So just why? They already had a note on the ticket saying that if you are sick, don't ride. Did they think that someone stupid enough to ignore that would tell the truth in their questionnaire?

I see the word 'normalize' on something and immediately roll my eyes. Because it's almost never used appropriately or for something that actually needs advocating for. Similar to this, I'm getting REAL tired of the way the word 'gaslighting' is missused. I hear it about once a week and about situations that are 100% NOT gaslighting. Good one. This is a funny story. In a recent stupid misunderstanding argument, my SO said he felt like I was gaslighting him. So we had to switch gears to discuss what gaslighting is. My take is that it's *knowing* what the truth is, but telling another it's not the truth - that there is something wrong with them for thinking that way, when it is actually correct. I also think it's saying something is the other person's fault when it is not.

WRT normalizing doing stuff alone--years ago, my wife and I went to a restaurant, and weren't impressed with either the food or the service. I looked up reviews online after we got home (I know, I know!). The restaurant critic for my local paper at the time was a single female (dunno if she's still there). She talked about how she walked into the restaurant, alone, and tried to ask for a table. She was rather forcibly told to sit down and wait. She saw full parties come in after her, get seated before her, and leave while she was still in the lobby. She finally got a different employee's attention, who looked confused and said, "Aren't you waiting for your party?!" "What party?! I'm here alone..." "OH!!" and only then did they bother seating her. The rest of her evening wasn't much better.

I do this sometimes, but try to never get in anyone's way. It's because I have aphantasia, I can't visualise things, so my memories are words, smells, thoughts only. I can describe the thing, but not see it. So, I take a hyper amount of video and photos because I can't bring the picture into my mind once it's gone. When politics is combined with religion as an identity, it becomes extremely dangerous.

See this is entirely wrong because politics is not voting for me. Politics is my right to bodily autonomy, equal pay, and marriage equality being threatened daily. So yeah its a pretty big f*****g deal to me and I want to know everyone I talk toos political identity so I know how much I can tell them about myself without risking my life.

Same with motherhood being someone’s whole identity. We are all so much more than just one thing. Fine, you’re a mom. But you’re also [insert list of all other things you are and can do—-if all you have is motherhood, you need to hire a babysitter or let the kids visit grandma and grandpa at least one day a week and get yourself out of the house, girl!]. There are so many women who are moms, while also building careers, going to school, inventing new products, running non-profits and charities, etc, etc, etc. Don’t pigeonhole yourself. Believe me, there are too many people out there who will lock you into that pigeonhole and not let you out, if you ever decide to expand your horizons.

I have blocked nearly all my friends on FB because I don't want to know how stuningly hateful they are when it comes to politics. I don't want to know that about you. I just want you to be the friend I used to know.

Actually - I think a person's stance on politics is important. If you do not know where you stand on politics, then injustice can be done without your say-so. You decide. Either you participate, or STFU about what you do not like.

I've had a number of friends who I know had very different political and social beliefs than I. It was never an issue, because, like you, I never wanted to discuss such thing, knowing that we would only fracture our relationship by doing so. However, in recent years, a few of *them* have started spouting their ideologies, unsolicited, and it's led me to want to cut ties with them, alas. We, as humans, have far more in common with each other than we often think... the problem lies when we try to impose our beliefs upon others.

Someone tried arguing with my stepdad, who is literally a doctor, on whether vaccines worked. Never being able to say 'I might be wrong.' We all want to be right but I'm proud of the fact I can admit when I'm wrong when I'm given incontrovertible proof that I am. Sticking to your beliefs even when faced with overwhelming evidence to the contrary is ignorant. And expecting others to follow those beliefs or even make laws regarding it is criminal in my opinion.

Not as bad as the anonymised enigmatic statements. 'It's heartbreaking when you find you can't trust someone any more because they betray you in the worst possible way'. 1. Everyone is left wondering if they're the one being referred to and 2. Just dish the dirt and give us all a good gossip!

It's even worse because it's rarely done to "protect" whomever it is they're talking about. It's done just in order to try to make your social media friends discuss the post and give you attention while they speculate.

So awkward when you see popular youtubers gushing their relationship all over social media and then all of a sudden they stop and you know they're not in such a blissful relationship. Even more awkward is when the boyfriend/girlfriend urges their audience to drool over their partner.

Some things are better left private. I just do not even want to bear witness to every single (dull as f**k to me) thing that happens in someone else’s life—-most of which is really no one else’s business anyway. Remember, if I can see it, your boss can see it. So can your parents. You really want to share with them? Especially since, once it’s out there, it’s out there forever.

This is why I'm so glad when the EU told Apple to use USB-C or bugger off. This sets the right precedence for our future as we get more digital. If we let private businesses dictate interoperability and force their ecosystem on smaller players, we are doomed to be at the mercy of a monopoly.

I'm torn on this, but probably because I've never looked into the difference between open source and public domain. If you modify open source can you legally market it the same way you could with a public domain song or book?

The problem is getting that content seen. I tutor kids in math at all levels and was frustrated with the math videos I saw, so I made my own channel. I've made over 100 videos, and it was growing steadily with great feedback and high click through rates. A month or two ago, something changed in the algorithm and YouTube cut my impressions by 95% and there's nothing I can do about it. One arbitrary decision by someone I'll never meet and a year of work is down the drain.

That's Google and youtube's method of madness to drown out smaller channels that don't make them any profits. All those monetized creators are fooling themselves. Sure they get ad money but then what happens? Youtube becomes their employer and they have a brutal uploading schedule with little time off and are expected to figure out the algorithm on their own. I prefer keeping it just for fun. You can still watch small channels and older content but you just have to really dig for it.

So you will know who is on your ballot and not vote blind. I am not doing it to get rich. I am doing what needs to be done. What’s the name of your non-profit? I’m in Maryland and have been trying to figure out a way I can help bypass all the c**p that crappy people are pulling to try and deny voting rights to people who vote for the other side. They’re trying to turn the clock back, while I’ve spent my life wanting to keep moving it forward. I love history, but I’m damned if I’m going to relive it. The “good old days” were only really good for a tiny minority of people—-basically wealthy straight WASP men—-and really bad for the rest of us. Why TF would I want to go back to that s**t?
