Person Asks A Question “What Modern Trend Do You Absolutely Hate?”, And 30 People Online Deliver
It is considered that criticizing modernity is the business of boomers. Older people, for example, are well aware that in the past, films were way more interesting, friendships were stronger, the sky bluer, and in general the whole world was much better than it is now. On the other hand, the modern world could be a tad bit better than it really is.
At the end of the 20th century, many scientists believed that the new one would become the golden age of mankind - and indeed, with the rapid development of technology, medicine, and the growth of total comfort, one could really expect something like that. But in fact, we are now about as far from the "golden age" as we were a quarter of a century ago. But why?
Perhaps the problem is that modernity is full of not-so-comfortable and pleasant trends. For example, recently on the AskReddit community, someone asked the question "What modern trend do you absolutely hate?" The thread went viral, gaining nearly 26K upvotes and over 19.5K comments in just a few days. It turned out that a variety of people, both old and young, are dissatisfied with many things in the world that surrounds us now.
Bored Panda has compiled for you a selection of the most interesting and thought-provoking opinions from this viral thread. So feel free to scroll to the very end, and be sure to write what you think about it. Perhaps you are also unhappy with something that we missed, in which case we definitely have to know!

Slamming people for things they did 30 years ago. People change. Times change.
I prefer to think of it as "consequence culture". It's true that people change, and making a rude joke 20 years ago shouldn't be the end of someone's career. But if someone shows a consistent pattern of negative behavior over many years with no evidence of growth (like being an unapologetic racist) it's fair for the public to decide they don't want to support that person any more. And in most instances the person isn't actually canceled- people like JK Rowling are still mega millionaires with fans all over the world. She still has the support of her publisher and Warner Bros. Nobody is actually canceling her.
But the post specifically said "something they did 30 years ago". If they have not broken any laws and said something ignorant years ago that they regret, they do not need to be cancelled now. If they are still unapologetically racist, sexist, or something more than rude then yes, they need to have something happen to them.
Load More Replies...There's nothing wrong with losing interest in a celebrity or public figure who has done something you vehemently disagree with...BUT...some people are far too invested in what celebrities say or do online. Any misstep or snippy comment someone makes while in a bad mood could ruin their career. It's just too overblown. People need to get life of their own and stop obsessing over damn post online. Who freaking cares?
If you haven't changed in the last 30 years....then no growth has happened which is way worse.
In my country 20 years ago: 16y/o "I'm gonna buy a case of beer and a pack of cigarettes!" Back then it was perfectly normal *and* legal. Now they have to be 18 to buy both. In 10 years time it'll be illegal to smoke at all. In 15 years time you're going to cancel this person because he smoked at 16 and was open about it? Not only do people change, but also what's socially acceptable. We've got to stop looking at the past with today's eyes. Yes we did things in the past, that's now unacceptable. But it is *not* a reason to judge us now.
That isn't the same thing at all. Of course laws change. Cancel culture is blocking or excluding someone for what is viewed today as a socially unacceptable opinion, usually a current opinion but it is sometimes the past. Who has been slammed for a law around drinking or smoking that they followed in the past but today would be illegal because the goalposts moved?
Load More Replies...Cancel culture to me donates how afraid people are of other opinions. They clearly feel threatened. Probably because, as children, they mollycoddled and don't understand how to deal with situations where there are either perceived or actual threats.
Or...they do not want to give their money to someone who is a bigot. Period. I dont care if someone thinks that people like me are inferior...have that opinion all you want...but do NOT whine about "cancel culture" when I refuse to go to your place of business, support your projects and actively encourage others who may find your views disgusting, to do so. You act as if because a person has an opinion, others have to bend over and take it. I was not "mollycoddled"...but if I find that you hate Black people, hate women, hate gays...HELL NO I am not patronizing anything having to do with you..."differing opinion" or not.
Load More Replies...Slamming people for not agreeing with what's supposed to be "politically correct". We don't have to tolerate aggressive or offensive behaviour, but every person has the right to think what they want. We must respect everybody, but we are not obliged to agree with them.
The normalization of ignorance.
Many believe that the opinion of someone with no knowledge or background is as valid as someone who has studied and has gained expertise.
Climate change, vaccine effectiveness, etc etc etc.
"People have had enough of experts" -Michael Gove, British MP (and utter twatwaffle) and at one point Education Minister. Yeah...
The people had enough of c**t Gove 10 years ago. He really is a little s**t of a man with no integrity or morals. He's the "yes" man they role out to double down on a lie and he'll stab you in the back in a blink of an eye. Odious turd.
Load More Replies...Yeah. Someone parroted one of Fox News' buzzwords to me by saying anyone who is educated is "overeducated". To me, you are only overeducated if you don't use the skills you learned...like critical thinking (assuming you were taught that).
My uncle is big antivax. I asked him to cite a source for me. Ended up finding one that is actual scientific study showing downsides to vaccination but the language was over both our heads because it was legit. End of the day we found the dumbed down version and it basically said based on their study allergic reaction rates night be higher than originally assumed for one specific vaccine. I told him I dont think an opinion is well researched if you can't understand the evidence that you use to support your claim

Companies with Facebook pages as their "website"
GOD, I hate this. I do everything I can to NOT use Facebook. There are lots of places to get free or cheap websites. Having a Facebook page instead makes me automatically not want to do business with you.
I agree, it just shows how unprofessional you are. It's an instant red flag. After 6 years of no social media it's hard for my friends to still wrap their heads around it. The sooner FB is gone the better.
Load More Replies...I can understand an independent seller, or very, very small upstart business. But never heard of a bigger business referring people to their facebook. I hate businesses referring people to their website rather than simply speaking with people is on here. It's so anti-social and rude for a company to do that to customers and potential clients. I want to hear tone and understand context.
It costs 25 euro for a domain and hosting of a website a year. If you cannot afford that as an independent seller or very small business then you don't sell enough to have a company.
Load More Replies...IMHO Facebook is a criminal organization and FB-only-site businesses are willing victims. I avoid them.
I hate when public schools use it as their announcement site. "Oh you didn't know? Well we posted it on Facebook!" Yeah that doesn't help me. One, I rarely look at Facebook. Two, there's so much trash to wade through there's no guarantee I'd have seen it anyways.
I know what you meant. I don't have a Facebook, and my kids school always announce everything on their Facebook page.
Load More Replies...Some only have Instagram. I don't so they immediately lose my business.
As someone who designs websites for a living, I cannot disagree more. It is far better to have no website than to have a poorly designed website, for several reasons. Search engine optimization is an important and hugely overlooked factor, design expertise, the psychology of web design, copywriting, etc. etc. etc. Having a website is about more than just loading all the info and pictures into a template; if it isn't done right, your business will not appear in any search directories, so you won't be able to grow. At least having a facebook business profile helps to get small businesses on the map. It's not just about giving existing customers something to look at, it's about driving new business. A poorly designed website will only hinder that.
Since very few persons under 30 routinely use facebook, this trend shows a company out of touch
Or using a tool to reach a certain generation who might be their target market.
Load More Replies...I do not like this. But I also get it, it is free. For many small businesses or even public schools, they cannot afford a website. So I stead they use Facebook for free.
Only to exist there is free. You would need to pay someone to monitor and respond. Also to use the meta tools costs money, to make the site work harder. Free is only relative.

All controls in a car being through a touch screen.
For driving safety I wanna keep my eyes on the road, and want to find controls (like window wipers, radio (OK in car audio podcast)) by touch. With a touch screen I have to look to see if I am touching the right place on screen for the control I want to frob.
Moving the HVAC controls to the screen is just dangerous. Especially the idiotic way VW have done it. My wife has a modern car and while it does have a touchscreen, primary functions can be controlled via the steering wheel buttons and the HVAC controls are dials and buttons
I hope the buttons on her steering wheel are easy to memorize by touch. It was always bad enough trying to figure out the controls while driving an unfamiliar car, but at least they were different shapes located in different areas within arm’s reach of the steering wheel—-and did not require taking your eyes off the road to look at a screen to access them. If they really wanted to innovate, they should’ve bypassed by the touchscreen entirely, and made those controls voice activated instead—-yet retained the traditional knobs and make it possible to turn off voice activation to drive manually, and quietly. What kind of odds do you want to lay that, as these cars roll out and are purchased, the number of accidents stemming from this new distraction will greatly increase? Well, unless the touchscreens stop working once the car’s paid off and you’re back to manual, just like certain features did in the past—-remember the automatic seatbelts from the nineties? They were great until they went up and the shoulder belt ended up permanently jammed halfway to your shoulder.
Load More Replies...It really is dangerous. It would be easier, for example, to feel the third button across, rather than having to take your eyes off the road to look at a screen.
I prefere older cars. Less "beep boop" stuff that breaks if it have a bad day, and more if this breaks, you will know why and what from the clonk crrrr eeeeeeee sound
Does that work for people too? I'm way past my warranty!

The abundance of people trying to be influencers/streamers, while the majority of them are about as interesting as a boil
All I know are the YouTubers, I could care less about a tiktoker or instagrammer
So what? Let them try. If they're boring, they will fail. If they are successful, good for them!
Yeah 🤷 if its something they wanna do, go for it! Just dont be a d**k to others because of it

I quit soon after. It makes me so angry now looking back that I went from someone who just wanted to leave my mark on the world to a view hungry fake influencer. I wish that there wasn't so much importance placed on views and subscribers.
Influencers don't bother me cos I don't follow them. But one thing that does bother me is watching a stream and then feeling berated for not "donating" or "tipping" or paying some monthly fee for something they started doing for free, had no guarantee of making money off of, and not doing anything beneficial to offer society than talking their opinions, in which we all do for free.
Hey! , if I want to eat a huge bowl of spaghetti in front of people and make money , let me ! ;) ha
Blaming whole generations for everything.
I'm a millenial. My mom a boomer but is as poor as dirt, don't even own a house. My youngest cousin are gen Z. Oldest are Gen X.
None of this is our fault. We're all in this s**t together. We're all struggling.
Wasn't Gen x always forgotten, like even during their time?! I'm pretty sure that's where all the grunge, depression, and subsequent Prozac prescriptions came from... The "Latch-key kids."
Right? Hell, our own parents forgot us most of the time. Half of 'em ditched us and went on to have millenial kids with their second and third spouses.
Load More Replies...This. So fed up of the hatred and blaming from different sides, people are people, good and bad whatever their age. (Gen X here).
I've been trying to decide where the division point is when kid's being told their generation is lazy, stupid, etc. and become adults telling the next generation that they suck etc. I am so tired of people repeating almost word for word what was said about their generation by the generation before, with no awareness of their personal amnesia.
Generalizing generations is bogus at best, deceitful at worst. In diverse nations, any age cohort is non-homogenous. Family income, race, social status, location, and more, keep us from being honestly clumped together.
Gen X here and this is too true. We have all been living through 7.25 an hour, meager to no savings, poor or no medical insurance. Many Xers don't own a home. Many Xers take care of old parents/ aunts, uncles. To be fair many Boomers don't have much either, especially if they are POC's. They had to sit in the back of the bus, no GI bill to help buy a home, low to no educational opportunities. I just want us all to win.
I'm a Boomer and wouldn't know a conflict existed if it wasn't for the medias constant harping on it. It sells I guess and God knows America needs more agitation.
Yes, almost there, so close, but we're still working on being the absolute most hated people on earth... Thanks Russia 😐😑😔
Load More Replies...Generation X here, yet we, in the UK are being blamed for, and in particular order, for voting BREXIT, causing the climate change, not allowing younger generations on the property ladder, blamed for not getting the younger generations (I'm looking at you millennials..) well paid jobs, making it more difficult for them to get a car, blah blah blah, Christ, do you think we had it easy?? our generation never blamed boomers....
Yet 61% over 65 voted to leave, a massive group as well. It was primarily boomers, not Gen X with Brexit. Also boomers who are the ones with the paid for property by and large, Gen X mainly have sizable mortgages and are still watching elderly parents totter around large homes (also our adult kids are still at home and we are trying to help them save). As for the climate, how many younger people are forgoing travel, tech, using cycling/public transport instead of driving etc. All big pollutants. Recycling your rubbish is good, but insufficient. Blame isn't helping, we seriously need better solutions.
Load More Replies...I'm gen X. Saved for 25+ years to buy my own small house, which also meant moving to a different area and giving up things I enjoyed doing. Things may look easier 30 years ago but it didn't feel that way at the time.
Gen X also had seriously high interest rates on mortgages for years and years. Topped out at around 15% to 17%. I had payments in the 80s that were over £2k a month. That is around £7500 in todays money! I definitely couldn't afford that right now! Tiny property too. We needed less money for deposits back then though, and big mortgages were easy to get hold of! Those things are more difficult for young people today for certain. Life always has its challenges though. We also worried about the IRA bombs and nuclear bombs... some things change and some things never go away sadly.
Load More Replies...Oh my god, thank you! I feel like with the internet being very close to global now generations matter even less than ever. I've met some great people older and younger than me and I don't think of them in twrms of the year they were born in. They're just cool people who want to live tgeir lives.
The fact that EVERYTHING is a f*****g ad.
Does a Girl Scouts t-shirt count??
Load More Replies...The current bombardment is a modern phenomenon, I'd say.
Load More Replies...You can’t try to look something up on the internet anymore without having to Wade through pages and pages of ads to get to actual information. They’ve crapped up the “information superhighway” with too much ugly and useless billboard pollution. It’s become an assault on the eyes and brain, and real frustration for those of us just trying to find the answer to a question.
It's gotten WAY out of control. I refuse to buy products that are advertised relentlessly.
Especially drug ads. I love the fact that they are required to list the side effects. Such as Death.
fortunately in other countries we don't get this as much... sometimes cold and flu medicine but that's it.
Load More Replies...My life is sponsored by McDonalds! /s but jokes aside, mobile games especially have this problem. I have a few on my phone to kill time, but the quality has dropped to a laggy glitch, and an ad pops up every time I click something. Terrible.
Using mental health issues as an excuse for s**tty behavior, especially when it’s a self-diagnosis.
Upvoting this comment to heaven. You are spot on.
Load More Replies...What's worse is the people who flat out fake having a mental health issue for clout or as an excuse for making others put up with their s**t. It makes it so that people won't believe that someone might actually have to deal with this.
THANK YOU. I LOVE YOU. i have a hard time talking to people about my mental health because of how people act online to people with mental health issues. people not believing you have issues cuz they aren’t like the ones you see online is a stupid stupid problem that we have.
Load More Replies...Thank you! As a person who is bipolar I especially hate it when someone uses this as an excuse. And it seems to me that many of those who diagnose themselves lately do so because they think it's cool to have a mental illness. The flipside is having to watch a tv show or movie where the dangerous criminal is a bipolar lunatic. Either way, it does a disservice to those of us who have to go through the pain of dealing with mental illness day after day.
I have the same problem with OCD. People love to say things like, "I cleaned my car out yesterday, IM SOOOO OCD LOLOLOL." I would love for that to be what it is, unfortunately that's not my experience. I also know that people are just kind of dumb and insensitive so it's whatever 🤷
Load More Replies...I dunno if this is anything new tho. People love attention and this has just turned into another popular method of getting it.
Load More Replies...THIS!!!!! I'm trying to get my mental health under control, but I don't hide behind it. I'll explain myself, but not because I'm trying to make excuses, I just want to offer some insight and own up to my sh1tty behavior anyway.
Yeah, my mental health issues are absolutely something that ruin my life, and I'm trying to get them to a tolerable level.
Load More Replies...Its the downside of the upside: society is more accepting of mental health issues. But human nature being what it is, some people have to leverage that.
I still have people that I know treat me badly and walk away from me. Mental illness is the worst thing I've had to live with, and I have Type 2 Diabetes too. I'd rather get rid of my Bipolar if possible. I am not self diagnosed. I knew something was wrong when I was 17 (now 34), and my parents brought me to a professional where I was diagnosed. We have not come far enough in understanding it all yet.
Load More Replies...Mental health does not excuse anyone from being an arseh0le. Yeah this is an unpopular thought. It's a mitigating factor yes, but never an excuse. Whoever you unleashed on, still got hurt. They are human beings too. Or should they be too special to be taking any blame for hurting another person. I am saying this from experience. I grew up in a violent household and have serious temper issues. If I seriously maimed or killed someone while I'm raging, should I be excused because of it? It takes decades to overcome. In the meantime, it doesn't mean I am justified to take it out of some poor sap being at the wrong place wrong time.
Don't know why you were downvoted, but I think that you might have a point. I wonder if entitlement and arrogance combined can count as a psychopathology?

Everything being smart. I don’t need my fridge and toaster and f*****g door locks connected to the internet, especially if I have to get up to use the thing anyway.
I agree completely, it's just overcomplicating very simple aspects of life.
Load More Replies...I don't know if I'm paranoid or if this is a legitimate fear, but I don't like the thought that all my appliances could be sharing my data without my knowledge. In many ways, we, as individuals, are our data, and smart appliances just put that out there. Plus, how many ways can smart appliances go wrong, costing hundreds or thousands of dollars to repair or replace? I just want the fridge to keep my s**t cold. It can be as dumb as a Trumpette to do that.
The #1 issue I have with smart appliances is most of them are NOT repairable - they're meant to be replaced when something goes wrong. More junk in the landfill? No thanks.
Load More Replies...Oh man I loved it when my friend got a front door lock several years ago. It was so high-tech and blah blah blah and then it stopped working; it was fun breaking into his apartment to unlock the door 😂 he changed it very soon after that
Lol exactly this event is why i never will accept electronic automation on anything critical. Younger people probably call me old. But i will laugh when my 30 year old key get me into my house while they need to wait for some tech
Load More Replies...Calling the technology "smart" just because it can do the simplest takes we can do ourselves, like turning on and off lights. is undermining our intelligence.
Overall humans are not a very intelligent species.
Load More Replies...Yup. Global chip shortage cos everything has to be ‘smart’. Why the heck do we need a smart kettle or fridge? Does it really impact your life or make it that much easier to justify the expense and time it takes to program/maintain it? Just another way people get sucked into wasting their money on c**p we don’t need.
Gather 'round children, let me tell you a story of...It's not worth it. We have an entirely "smart" home, and while some things are nice (being able to control the lights & thermostat when we're away from home, security cameras, etc.), the novelty wears off, and most of the stuff becomes unnecessarily expensive versions of everyday items with dozens of "features" that never get used. You don't need to control your fridge or toaster oven via wifi, it's much faster to just push a button than opening an app to find the "smart thing" and turn it on. You still have to get up and put the toast in, you're saving nothing.
If the fridge is so smart why doesn't it close itself instead of pinging my phone that it's open?
And I don't need or want my refrigerator sending messages to my phone that we're low on eggs/milk/cheese/whatever!

Worshipping politicians as if they were demi gods.
Person from the United Kingdom of UK here. The absurdity of politicians and their followers over in the USA is a strange and ridiculous hot mess of bullsh!t.
We know, and only the giant Cheeto’s followers think that it’s normal to worship a politician.
Load More Replies...You just don't see any Biden flags or hats or shirts or anything bigger than a bumper sticker. Trumpers think that shows a weakness in Biden's support. No, it shows a sanity. The man is president, not a messiah or a God.
Exactly! There's just no "cult of personality" there. Even in the days of JFK, though -- who is perhaps the most charismatic Democratic president of the last century -- I don't think his supporters ever reached even close to the Trump level of fanaticism.
Load More Replies...Growing up in the us, the first political anything I remember was Bill Clinton. Great president, not so great person. Then we had the other George bush, being puppeted by D**k Cheney ruling the world, and starting a 20-year war in the wrong direction, to try to finish what his dad couldn't. Then I was finally old enough to vote the first time Obama came around, and did so the second time. I don't think I need to talk about the 4 years after that, we are completely screwed from that, though our current president isn't doing too much to help us right now either. Whenever I think about politics, in the US at least, I wonder how different things would be here and abroad if Al Gore hadn't "lost" that election.....
Political affiliation as the mainstay of one's identity is ridiculous. There is so much wrong with all the major parties, in the USA and elsewehre, the only reasonable thing is to be independent.
Spoiler alert: They aren't! They're just normal people who are good with people--you don't need to worship them or anything
But....I wonder who really worships them. Everyone I know thinks they are nothing but liars and amoral self-promoters.....pretty much ALL of them. I think they have sold the "worship" or "respect" thing as part of their marketing.
Same with media stars. People who are good at pretending to be other people are presumed to have authoritative opinions. Bah, humbug!
Yes, worshiping someone with the acidity of an orange, the intelligence of a Cheeto, and the voice of an orangutan baffles me to wit's end.
Corporations buying single family homes and turning them into rentals.
Back to the feudal system where the corporations are the Barons and landowners.
Back to the French Revolution. Get out that guillotine and start beheading billionaires.
Load More Replies...In my old neighborhood, which was nice section of small, single family homes, about 35% are now rentals. The rents are far more per month than I paid for my mortgage. Those who can't afford to make a lump-sum down payment on a house are truly screwed.
Meh, they don't really taste good. Can we yeet them instead? We'll build some giant sling shots, catapults, and trebuchets and see who can get the farthest.
Load More Replies...Pass laws against it. Needs a movement but that's hard because so few people see it as a problem or even know about it. "The news" rarely mentions it as the source of the housing affordability problem. They just blame interest rates and inflation.
Load More Replies...I don't see the problem with this. There's a high demand for rentals in my city, but affordable rentals. What's terrible is developers and buyers taking over apartment blocks, kicking tenants out just so they can renovate and change the suites to condos.
That's nice for your city. But for others where the rent could be called many things rather than 'affordable', landlords are rinsing the poor/below average owners.
Load More Replies...Sucks. You have companies buying up entire housing developments full of homes that people would normally buy, but they now can't because they're just big, expensive rental properties now.
While I understand what you're saying, us renters also need places to live. With purchasing housing more and more out of reach for "regular" people, rentals are very important.
They are, but there is no capping the amount some of these greedy landlords are charging and their insane demands.

Those stupid f*****g reaction videos where someone is pointing at another video and nodding their head or over emphasizing their facial expressions. It drives me nuts. How pathetic do you have to be
The ones that do analysis with thought-provoking commentary can be interesting. But I've seen ones where obviously the person just wants to try to monetize on someone else's video. There's one channel where it's just 2 guys, clearly stoned af, watching South Park clips and laughing a bit.
That sounds incredibly boring to do, much less watch.

I HATE that modern news is no longer just a informational source of what is happening. It’s turned into a talk show. News networks only cast people who have loud personalities and lean VERY hard one way politically. They only cast people to make the news more popular by finding cast that make you think “I wish I could hand out with them”.
NEWS NEEDS TO BE A NEUTRAL PLACE TO GATHER INFORMATION TO MAKE A DECISION FOR YOURSELF. It’s not the f*****g Wendy Williams Show. We don’t care how the anchor feels about it. WE WANT FACTS AND NEUTRAL INFORMATION!
*Edit after having a lot of good conversations with y’all-* I wish the consumers of news wanted more straight forward facts and non-bias information. I know that news networks love the views, but it seems to be more entertainment than news.
Because we have 24 hours to fill with news and only really enough content for 6-7 of those hours. At what point does it stop being "news" and becomes "olds"?
Well, technically there could be way more news than we are shown, plenty more than enough to fill a day. If we were presented with news from around the world. I realize that news outlets only have so much budget and time, but I’d love to know more of what’s happening around the world and not just in my little bubble. It’s shameful how little I know about the rest of the world.
Load More Replies...FCC used to have an unbiased rule. The networks got it thrown out. Money, as usual. Bring back the "Talking Heads."
Also I hate it when the news "reports" on shows done by the entertainment division. Reporting on what happened on last night's reality show is NOT news.
Hear me out now, kids. Back in my day ('60s-'70s), the actual news was only on for two hours a day, at 6PM EST and 11PM ("It's 11 o'clock, do you know where your children are?"). The only time I remember that being expanded was during Watergate. We didn't need any stinkin' news 24-7, sheesh.
"We're not telling them what to think... we're just showing them how." - Serenity (Sci-fi movie - Joss Whedon)
What's more annoying about TV news today is the *sensationalism*. I haven't watched news programs, as a rule, for many years -- but when I stayed with family a few years ago, they still watched news every night, and I was struck by how much it was packaged as such, compared to the TV news I would see when still living with my parents as a kid. It's all carefully geared to stir up emotions, not report the facts. That made me even more thankful I no longer watch that junk.
Puffy fake lips
As a dental hygienist, I do oral cancer screenings and part of that is palpating the lips- augmented lips feel very different from natural lips, not in a good way. Natural lips are consistent in feel with no discernible lumps, and should be soft, elastic and slightly firm. Augmented lips actually feel like there is a hard rope running inside the length of the lip or tiny pearls deep inside when you palpate them (depending on how they're augmented). It's not pleasant to feel- I always wonder how it must feel to kiss someone with that.
I'd say just let people look how they wanna look. Not my thing, but young me definitely made questionable choices too...

Imagine having it your job to create a video, edit it, then make different variations for each platform and then using every platform for different things. So, you got your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Twitch, Patreon, Youtube, TikTok, etc. I can barely keep consistent with my one channel. That's they're whole life, all day. Just low quality of life.

What is point of getting likes, anyways? Do they make you money?

"news" agencies writing articles about "all these people are saying X" when it's just a few random people on twitter, and generally the trend of amplifying fringe theories, beliefs, conspiracies, etc.
Anyone providing news is doing so for profit, it's a business. Drama sells. This is why they do it!
I like the conspiracy theory that the government/CIA/FBI/NFA etc pays people to come up with really outlandish theories, and flood the internet with them. So that the *real* conspiracies are just viewed as crazy and mixed in with the rest :D
I have heard that Big tech and Big pharma are hiring actors and spreading stories that conspiracy theories are all fake and made up.
Google IS BIG BROTHER , I know they track EVERYTHING I do on my email , shopping on line , researching , constantly. The scary thing is the government can easily access it all , business is marketing but GOVERNMENT is CONTROLL !!!!
I'd even stretch this to celebrity news. I have no real love for celebrities but the lies that are told about them can truly ruin their careers, their personal lives and make it difficult for them to be hired in real life jobs. And there's little to no research done. Even when they agree to an interview, the writer can completely skew what they said out of context. Imagine just trying to be an actor and some news report comes out online about you being a child molester and the source is some random troll on twitter. Now, whether it's true or not, whether you sue and whether or not it's retracted, the story has gone viral and you're forever linked to this article. Any time someone does a search for your name, any time a studio is looking to hire you, ... the number 1 search result is that you molest children. No one should have to deal with that.
Literally anything software wise I purchase I don’t even f*****g own. If I buy a piece of software and hardware, I should be allowed to edit AND OWN it to my hearts content.
It’s my property so I should be allowed to do what I will with it
Even cars are going subscription model. BMW calls it “Functions on Demand”. If you want heated seats, you can pay for a subscription. You can subscribe from a month, a few years or unlimited. Though I’m pretty sure when someone buys that car second hand again, an unlimited subscription won’t be transferred to the new owner… they will have to buy unlimited again. Just like how Tesla has been deactivating the Ludicrous package from the previous owner so that the next person has to pay again.
Wait, what? So the car has the technology for heated seats, but you have to pay to use them?! That's BS!

I feel this a lot for games these days. Why can't I buy a game and just be able to play the game. What's with all these extra purchases and costs.
I HATE that. Like, I can't even play single player Halo or Fallout without an internet connection. Why? I'm playing by myself in my own home with a game that is installed on my personal xbox. I don't need to connect to anything for that.

Subscriptions are just another way of putting people in debt. Why have something have value when you can just call it a service and keep charing. That’s some bs. Photoshop talking about you but now also tesla and bmw.
I've been considering my own mortality recently and have come to an interesting (I think) conclusion. What it all comes down to in the end, is that we don't actually own anything in the way that we think we do. We regard things as 'ours' like a house or car but it never really belongs to us. Universally, we are borrowing all of our things until we die and then someone else gets to borrow them until they die etc. Think of all the people that may have regarded your home as their home in the past, before you moved in. You may have custody of an item and you may have bought it 'outright' or 'upfront' but when the grim reaper comes knocking, it all gets moved on to another borrower (not to be confused with the little folk on the TV). Purchasing things is the same as leasing them until you die. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts but please don't downvote me to hell. It's a theory not a proposal for a new cult and I'm not hurting anyone with my crazy ideas, I don't think anyway.
The difference is: keep paying until you die or stop paying at some point and use/, enjoy the same product. In both cases they'll go to someone else when you're not around, but in the first case they'll have to pay again (and you won't choose who that person is), and in the second one they'll get something, free of charge, and you designate who should get it. I'm not a crazy capitalist but if l work my a*s off l want at least my child or my friends to enjoy the product of my effort

I said the same thing back in the 90s. Despite being a developer, I do not agree with such monetizing methods because it's simply bad for the industry. Not long after bigger players began buying out or simply bury smaller competitors in lawsuits and start cornering various niches. These companies are now too big to fail and can stifle innovation if they ever see a threat to their market. This is where we are.
Everything becoming monetized and for profit. Every hobby, every social media account, everything imaginable.

The direction things are headed, people will have to monetize their hobbies as their main job will not cover the bills (it's already a thing). They won't have a choice unless something changes in the way people are compensated for a full time work.

But if I'm not earning money or not bothering to take up these ventures I feel lazy, incompetent and a failure.
There's nothing wrong with this. If someone is providing content I find interesting and useful and can turn their hobby into living, that's great!
At least it's a possibility to make money without being squashed by corporate pressure
I mean, I get this one. I sell art commissions for relatively cheap because I enjoy doing it and it helps me practice even when I don’t have any inspiration. People use them as pfps, gifts, etc.
My cousin is a fantastic artist but draws for herself mostly. Her father looked her dead in the eyes and told her "show me your drawings after you've sold one". Not everything someone does has to be for money and that crushed her.
I, too, am a fairly good artist and draw for myself. Mainly because it helps me relax and I don't know if anyone would like my drawings.

NFTs
I do not know what these are. They have been explained to me, but still, I do not know what they are.
It's like this. You want to buy a picture X from Picasso, but you don't buy the picture itself, but a piece of paper which says: "Picture X of Picasso belongs to the person holding this paper.' Or the short version: It's a big ol' scam!
Load More Replies...I am not buying any of these things. I would use that money and buy a painting/drawing/artwork from an artist that has put their time and energy into it. So many to choose from.
It's just paying lots of money for something that doesn't even really exist
That's a nice NFT, Would be a shame if, Someone screenshots it,
the Mona Lisa doesn't become less valuable because you print a photo of it and hang it on your wall
Load More Replies...Ah yes...the purest form of monetization of things with no intrinsic value.
The problem with NFTs is the token itself may not be fungible but the art itself is. Moreover, the art is not stored in the blockchain so the host holding it can go down and erase your so-called "once-off" or "unique" art piece. Until that's resolved steer clear. Lastly, it's a bit moot. I mean, we might all want an original Van Gogh but I think most of us are happy with a canvas print at the same size. Whether it's REALLY van Gogh's actual hand that made it is not that important to most people. So likewise, If I wanted (big, big IF), if I wanted a bored ape, I can just screenshot your NFT and print it or use it as-is. I do not care that it is the "original".
Once someone turned my artwork (i drew it on paper, they went through my sketchbook and took a picture when i was in the bathroom.) Into an NFT. I rained hell down on them. Made them give me the money they sold it for (About $120) and then some to stop me from calling the cops.
Non-Fungible Token. A non-fungible token is a financial security consisting of digital data stored in a blockchain, a form of distributed ledger. The ownership of an NFT is recorded in the blockchain, and can be transferred by the owner, allowing NFTs to be sold and traded. I think they're stupid as heck and I could design them all day long if I wanted. I don't want.
Hustle culture is the s**ttiest, most burnout inducing mindset a person could have
You have to hustle! You're sleeping at 3am? WEAK...The Rock is up at 2am. You're having lunch at 1pm? HAHA...you're wasting time to grind. You're cooking dinner with your wife at 6pm? PATHETIC...the only grind you're doing is the pepper shaker. You're trying to get 8hrs of sleep? NO WONDER YOU'RE NOT ME...I hire people to sleep for me.
Yes they are! I grew up thinking that if you worked your a*s off you'll do great. Always prided my self at doing whatever I could to make ends meet and make life affordable. Every online account wants my phone number, email, gender, full name, address, marital status etc.
I want to download an app and it wants access to everything. The app can take a picture, now i want access to your complete gallery, contact list and call history.
I go to a physical store to buy a computer and they want my zip code.
I call customer service and they will record the conversation. Not even optional....
I stopped giving my email and phone numbers out to retail staff after learning Canada's Michael's rewards are non-existent. We're not collecting points nor are we able to use them. It's been a few years and staff still don't know when or if we're getting rewards for Michael's arts and crafts. But they still ask for your email address with every purchase. I just say I'm not bothering anymore. Recordings for customer service is only really for training purposes. When new hires are being trained the managers will show examples from real calls (edited to leave out the person's identity of course) and will use good and bad ones. It's also to ensure the reps are doing their job and if there's any discrepancy they have the recording to refer to. Call centres are not distributing these recordings to other 3rd party companies unless it's a client and there's a legal warrant in obtaining that recording. That's all.
I've worked in call centers and you're right about the purpose of recording the calls. We would have regular quality assurance assessments by our manager who would listen to the recordings. No information is shared elsewhere.

A recorded call helped me with a medical insurance claim. I called my medical insurance to verify benefits for an upcoming procedure. They said it was covered. After the procedure, they denied the claim and coverage. They did have to pay due to the recorded conversation I reminded them about. Sheesh.
It’s super annoying and probably could be used against you. No place is safe, not even your own home. And it’s sad this has happened
If you're buying from a physical store you can refuse to give them your zip/postal code, your phone number, your email address, and anything else that doesn't relate whatsoever to what you're buying. I just say "I don't give that out". I've only had one clerk try to argue the point in all the decades that I've been doing this.
Entities that want you to give them your name and email address before they let you see what other information they want. Amtrak tried this, insisting that everyone fill out a Covid questionnaire which you could not review first. If they need this information, surely they could send it along with the ticket, ask you to review it, and email the completed thing back. Because of two things, I never filled one out on any of my trips in the past two years: (1) I tried to go on the website to see the thing, couldn't get on in four tries. Nope. (2) the above, giving my email address without knowing what else they would ask for. Nope. I arrived at Penn Station in New York expecting to have to prove I'd done it. Nope. So just why? They already had a note on the ticket saying that if you are sick, don't ride. Did they think that someone stupid enough to ignore that would tell the truth in their questionnaire?
We give out our data for free and corporations make billions off of it. We don't see any money. WE NEED TO BE PAID FOR OUR DATA!
**"We need to normalize [X]"** when X is something completely trivial and irrelevant, like going to the movies alone.
Whatever the *majority* of people does will be considered normal, deviations from it are what's outside the norm. If you need everything you want to do outside the norm to be "normalized", that's a you problem, not a society problem.
People don't care. Just do your thing. People *really* don't care. And if some do, they're just random strangers, so *you* shouldn't care.
At first I thought they were saying going to the movies alone shouldn't be a normal thing. But I get what they're saying at the end part. Basically, we shouldn't have to emphasize how normal a harmless, mundane activity is just because it's not wildly popular.
Speaks to the people who are too insecure to do stuff they want alone and very little about the activity.
Load More Replies...I see the word 'normalize' on something and immediately roll my eyes. Because it's almost never used appropriately or for something that actually needs advocating for. Similar to this, I'm getting REAL tired of the way the word 'gaslighting' is missused. I hear it about once a week and about situations that are 100% NOT gaslighting. Stop using words you don't know the meaning of, people! LOL
Good one. This is a funny story. In a recent stupid misunderstanding argument, my SO said he felt like I was gaslighting him. So we had to switch gears to discuss what gaslighting is. My take is that it's *knowing* what the truth is, but telling another it's not the truth - that there is something wrong with them for thinking that way, when it is actually correct. I also think it's saying something is the other person's fault when it is not.

People need to know the difference between destigmatisation and normalisation
I think the whole genderneutral commity would not agree on this one.
Wrong , whatever a small minority say is normal then that becomes normal and normal people must comply or be ostracized .
Don't get why things need to be normalises. What's wrong with thinking outside the box
WRT normalizing doing stuff alone--years ago, my wife and I went to a restaurant, and weren't impressed with either the food or the service. I looked up reviews online after we got home (I know, I know!). The restaurant critic for my local paper at the time was a single female (dunno if she's still there). She talked about how she walked into the restaurant, alone, and tried to ask for a table. She was rather forcibly told to sit down and wait. She saw full parties come in after her, get seated before her, and leave while she was still in the lobby. She finally got a different employee's attention, who looked confused and said, "Aren't you waiting for your party?!" "What party?! I'm here alone..." "OH!!" and only then did they bother seating her. The rest of her evening wasn't much better.
People using their phone at concerts to record/take pictures. Seems like it is everyone all the time. Takes me out of the moment and sight lines are bad enough without everyone holding their phone over their head.
Apart from taking a picture of yourself or friends, when are you ever going to either watch that video or picture again? Like really? I remember recording fireworks once way back and I've literally never watched it.
I do this sometimes, but try to never get in anyone's way. It's because I have aphantasia, I can't visualise things, so my memories are words, smells, thoughts only. I can describe the thing, but not see it. So, I take a hyper amount of video and photos because I can't bring the picture into my mind once it's gone. I'm terrified of forgetting special moments because of it.
These recordings are never for the person recording; it's for them to put on social media to prove they were at THIS EVENT and HAVING A BANGING TIME!

Politics being someone's entire identity. I'm plenty old enough to remember being good friends with people and having no idea how they felt about political issues or for whom they voted - it just never came up.
I grew up in a very small Florida town. The poll workers would tell anyone who would listen what political party you were. Less than 10% were not Republicans. My family was part of that 10% and we were confronted by it day after day. I heard about JFK's assassination from a classmate as I was walking home. " YAY, Kennedy is dead." We were 7.
When politics is combined with religion as an identity, it becomes extremely dangerous.
See this is entirely wrong because politics is not voting for me. Politics is my right to bodily autonomy, equal pay, and marriage equality being threatened daily. So yeah its a pretty big f*****g deal to me and I want to know everyone I talk toos political identity so I know how much I can tell them about myself without risking my life.
Same with motherhood being someone’s whole identity. We are all so much more than just one thing. Fine, you’re a mom. But you’re also [insert list of all other things you are and can do—-if all you have is motherhood, you need to hire a babysitter or let the kids visit grandma and grandpa at least one day a week and get yourself out of the house, girl!]. There are so many women who are moms, while also building careers, going to school, inventing new products, running non-profits and charities, etc, etc, etc. Don’t pigeonhole yourself. Believe me, there are too many people out there who will lock you into that pigeonhole and not let you out, if you ever decide to expand your horizons.
Actually - I think a person's stance on politics is important. If you do not know where you stand on politics, then injustice can be done without your say-so. You decide. Either you participate, or STFU about what you do not like.
I miss those days!!! the last few years really showed me who I was surrounding myself with! :-/

I've had a number of friends who I know had very different political and social beliefs than I. It was never an issue, because, like you, I never wanted to discuss such thing, knowing that we would only fracture our relationship by doing so. However, in recent years, a few of *them* have started spouting their ideologies, unsolicited, and it's led me to want to cut ties with them, alas. This is why I'm so glad when the EU told Apple to use USB-C or bugger off. This sets the right precedence for our future as we get more digital. If we let private businesses dictate interoperability and force their ecosystem on smaller players, we are doomed to be at the mercy of a monopoly.

Thats why society hate androgynous people (both in person or online without pronouns). Its because they dont know how to treat you if they dont know your gender.

Scoffing/judging/sneering/laughing/playing ignorance towards people who either prefer or need to do things "the old fashioned way", such as calling someone on their phone without texting, or refusing to rely so heavily on the internet and technology. Which brings up another thing that's wrong. Making people pay for cards for making payments, like our city's transit Pego cards. $5 to buy the card, and then you have to load money onto the card. If you lose the card I think the replacements cost more.
OK well in a country like ours with a high crime rate, not having to carry cash is super useful. Cash is used here a LOT for crime and bribes etc are paid cash, so if they eliminated cash I'd be happy. Google "cash in transit heist south africa" if you want to see. The blow the vans up, collect the cash, and run. It's garbage. Digital payments.

Sexist feminists calling out men for mansplaining, manspreading, 'The Future is Female' and all the other c**p they come up with to insult and demean men.
One of the things that makes me saddest is that it seems like people are not willing or able to have a civilized discussion anymore. So many people can only respond with quips, sneers, mockery, sarcasm, derision, scoffing, or just abuse to anything they don't agree with. People become so sensitive to any idea that differs from their own, that they take it as criticism or an attack on their beliefs, or worse, a personal attack on them as an individual. People are defensive, easily offended, and yet find it so easy to purposefully offend others. There's no civility in discourse anymore, no give and take, no reaching for common ground. Now, it's all about digging in, taking a stand, and defending our intellectual territory.
Hypocritical celebs and famous people who preach about the environment or poverty when some of them are constantly using private jets or come from very wealthy backgrounds.
Question everything - another prime example of people downvoting a comment because they disagree with it. This comment was neither spam, nor hateful, nor trolling and shouldn’t be downvoted for the wrong reasons.
