Mister Global Contestants Dress In Their National Costumes And Look Like Video Game Bosses
Recently, Mister Global, a male beauty pageant took place in Thailand. The event was founded in 2014 and since its first edition over 60 countries have sent their representatives to compete for the Mister Global Title. This year, 38 beautiful men decided to test their strengths in the pageant. The final was held in Bangkok on September 26 with the “Inspiring Gentleman” theme. However, this event is not merely a beauty contest, even though one of the main requirements of contestants is to be 'good looking' as the spokesperson of the pageant, Kitti Kamjunsa, told Bored Panda. "The aim of Mister Global is to promote environmental awareness, and we have been promoting this cause ever since we started in 2014. This year, we added a new motto "Inspiring Gentleman" because we believe that the contestants and titleholders should motivate others and be inspirational people. During this year's pageant, we did a fundraising event to support an organization that takes care of elephants in Thailand and it was successful, " Kamjunsa said. When asked what makes Mister Global different from other pageants the spokesperson explained: "Basically every pageant system is identical but what makes Mister Global different from the others is that we are part of the Top 5 Grand Slam Male Pageants. We have good quality contestants with inspiring stories to tell and great support from our national directors from around the world. We have also garnered much support from our many fans that follow us on our website and the official page. Most importantly, we are true on our advocacy of Environmental Awareness and charity cause."
The pageant was won by Korea‘s Jong Woo Kim, who is a 23-year-old police administration student and model. Jong Woo Kim is set to become an inspirational role model for young men all around the world. He will also become a Global Goodwill Ambassador and participate in environmental and charitable projects.
Same as every year, the most attention goes to pageant's national outfits showcase. After all, the representatives get the chance to demonstrate their countries heritage. "For us, we are really surprised that it went viral around the world and we welcome many positive comments. However, the creative costumes segment is nothing new in any pageant system as it has always been a part of it. The winning costume is not about the size or design but the story and culture behind it," Kamjunsa said. The national costume contest was won by Myanmar, it's safe to say that most of the contestants made their homelands' proud by rocking well crafted and intricate costumes. Right - for those have who their knickers in a twist saying that it's wrong to have a Boer dressed as a Zulu... he's not. I can see at least seven different cultures represented by what that guy is wearing. It's actually a pretty smart way to incorporate just about everyone who lives in South Africa in one image.

Weird, somebody knows where is this dress from? I never saw ome like this in Spain. But I am from Valencia, so I might be wrong.
Yeah, its a traje corto. Im so glad they didnt dress him as a torero...
Load More Replies...You can't have a gram of fat on you and wear these high waisted pants. Ugh!
I’m with you. I’m from Asturias . This is more like”cordobés “ I don’t know about you, but this doesn’t represent me at all.
That is always the challenge in Spain, there is too much diversity to try to fit it in one image. The problem is when people act like one region's culture is the only one in Spain.
Load More Replies...Same stereotypical shite... There's a huge variety of National costumes within Spain as it's (like it or not, Madrid) a nation of nations. But go ahead... Andalusian costumes, bullfighting, siesta... Ignorance
🤣🤣 Thank you for this!!! Now I have that song in my head!!! 🤣🤣
Load More Replies...I don't understand how all these people commenting that are supposedly from España or are Spanish don't recognize a Flamenco dancer's outfit?! 🙄
Load More Replies...Es un traje corto, uno de los muchos trajes representativos de la cultura española, no es un traje de luces, no confundir.
I see the riff on toreador pants and a bolero jacket - heavily modified, but the lines are there. Given the decline in the popularity of bullfighting, I don't necessarily think it qualifies as the "national costume", if it ever did
Its an andalusian suit. Stop mixing bullfighting with everything in spain

His costume looks very functional. It's not as extravagant as the others, but looks like something he'll get a lot of use from. It's like I'm looking in a book about his country and see this pic.

I would like to see the rest of the weapon, it looks very substantial and impressive,

What does he back look like? His dress looks very functional. Has a farmer ring to it.

Nice Lion costume. I like that they kept the Lion Head simple-ish and not overly flashy/inlaid with decorative horns/jewels/eyelashes so as not to overshadow the human.

Honestly, as a Puerto Rican. I think they did macrame but not with rope like that, and I also feel they got lazy with this. If this costume was made for like a contest. Lord forgive me, but its f*****g terrible. And im kinda annoyed 😅

Why does it look like they just took it out the suitcase and put it on? Geez they should carry a travel steamer.

While superman may be "native" to USA (its "birth" country) it is not "native" in the same way that all the other costumes are. I feel that using an indian (as in native american) would've been a much better choice.
I'm Polish and I felt disappointed with our contestant's costume... And then I saw USA. I'm better now
I'm from Malaysia and i feel the same way too ! Thanks USA!
Load More Replies...So they all went for their countries traditional clothes and the guy for the USA is "I'm going as Superman"? ... Then the Swiss guy didn't even try and just wrapped the flag around him.
Last year's winner was USA - the traditional clothing is just one round in an old fashioned beauty contest. Will someone please explain to me why beauty pageants still exist? Aren't we supposed to be getting better about judging people on looks? Mr-Global-...407a9e.jpg
Load More Replies...am I the only one bothered by how much most of these suits need ironing? like they didn't even try
YES!! Thank you, I thought that I was the only one who noticed the need for ironing! Could you imagine Miss USA competing in a wrinkled dress??
Load More Replies...Its not that THEY look like Video game bosses, but Video game Bosses look like them. Because that's where almost all Video games, Books, Movies and TV series gets it from, Our Cultures, Myths and Lore. Right? I was in my mid-30s before I realized one of my favorite scifi/fantasy authors was just ripping off Babylonian mythology! as that was 40 yrs ago now, I can't quite remember the name...maybe Feist?
Load More Replies...All the asian n tribal costumes are exquisite.. But mr. Sweden, America and swiss.. tch, tch, tch
I was waiting to see an Australian representative, wearing stubbies and holding a can of four X with tongs in the other hand.
Maaaaaaate - a can of Fosters with a pair of stubbies, a blue singlet, and a vegemite sandwich ;)
Load More Replies...I wanted to see an English entry. Just a guy in suit and bowler hat. Maybe carrying an umbrella
What is with these costumes though? All the Caucasian guys look like they went to party city for their costumes while the rest of the men look like they were dressed as/by the gods?
Oh. My. GOSH. It gets worse... I just searched on YouTube for Mr. Global and found a GEM! An unedited, uncut video of the entire national costume competition portion (which is only 12 min. long but it’s just soooo bad, that it’s SOOOO good that it only feels like it’s 6 min. long) and yes, some of the costumes still look gorgeous but wait till you see how some of your favorites will leave you with your jaw dropped (in a bad “WTF?!?!” way), how some you hated will leave you impressed, and how Superman is Super Embarrassing. The link to YouTube video is in the first reply to this comment:
They went and did a photo shoot with no wardrobe workers? Party shop costumes and then not even a steaming to hide the fact they just ripped open the plastic bag they came in? Some of these costumes are incredible and you can see the time and consideration that went into them and then the others just phoned it in.
Might as well done an Elvis costume over Superman :O. Western/ cowboy would of been better or like army, or clothing from George Washington times.
So Switzerland's 'national dress' is to wear the flag?! And the UK? England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? How's that work?
The round where the entrants wear national costume or the whole of the pageant?
Load More Replies...Perhaps it would be safer for the organizer of the contest to let all contestants wear some retro clothes to give them really gentlemen look - they would have no problem with native appropriations and poor Mr. Cuba, USA or Schwitrzland won't have to wear those silly costumes
Why no Scotland ? We have the best. ! Look up Gerrard Butler in a kilt , and that’s just for starters.
Though the version of the kilt we are used to seeing was invented by Thomas Rawlinson, a Quaker from Lancashire.
Load More Replies...People!!! I'm just coming from reading the text that's before the pictures (after seeing all of them, of course) and it begins saying "The aim of Mister Global is to promote environmental awareness". =8O
So the Superman costume was was a standin for the Captain Planet costume that Amazon lost?
Load More Replies...I've noticed this trend in western publication and entertainment websites that South Asian representation is almost always limited to India. I mean it's nice you included Nepal but there are so many countries here with such distinct cultures and clothes that you didn't include. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Iran almost always don't receive the cultural recognition they deserve. I know to Americans it wouldn't make sense but South Asian culture is so much more than India and limiting it to that prototype is something I find uncomfortable. Africa also needed more countries to be represented.
Superman was invented by a Canadian. Just because the USA 'adopted' him as their own, he is still as Canadian as our Beaver and RCMP. And why isn't Canada represented?
For many of these - amazing costuming. They must have a cost a fortune in labour and materials... most of them extremely well put together... Uhh... but... Superman... is a Canadian creation... like Aunt Messy said above... no? Then again... there is no Mister Canada... so...hm.
I thought all the costumes other than USA and Switzerland were beautiful. I enjoyed them all. And being modeled by attractive men! Lovely.
I was wondering how those really elaborate costumes were transported. Those headdresses wouldn't fit in an overhead bin! Would be massively expensive to have them shipped.
Germany would have been fun. Try to picture one of those guys in Lederhosen haha
Lederhosen are NOT the national dress, just Bavarian.
Load More Replies...For India! The costume, sherwani could have been 10 times better...even the dhoti kurta! But I don't know some white sherwani with white head safa! Designer or choice sucks!
No Pakistan as usual. Why do you people add only India and consider it to be enough of South Asian representation? There is Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Iran etc. All these countries are usually ignored because all South Asian representation is limited to India in western publication.
It's only people who could not enter a "beauty pageant" who have issues with them. Just saying.
At the very least, the US guy shoulda worn a well-tailored, high quality suit.
Bloody love how many experts in Anthropology and Ethnic Studies are on this site.
im not racist but South Africa white man? Czech Republic Asian?Nepal Arabic? wtf???
Looking for Canada and not finding it but then seeing the USA and thinking maybe it’s for the best...
Here are countries I had never heard of but when it comes to costumes...they were magnificent! How about Hungary? Never mentioned!
I went through them all. My pick is Mexico. The one from the USA (where I'm from) was moronic. Must be a Trumpee.
In spite of the many negative comments, I liked every one. I assume these are the winners in each country and now they are competing for the Mr. Global title. I am thankful I am not on the judges' panel, having to choose among these beautiful men.
None of them seemed to represent any of their countries accurately. Why stupid superman for USA. Why some Carmen Miranda looking Smoak for Cuba. I have to venture to say that the costumes were artistic concepts but not necessarily accurate but broad in scope in regard to the countries being represented.
There were so many amazing ones in here i really couldn't pick a favorite. You could tell most of them put a ton of effort into them. I would have loved to see this in person.
All the other countries look awesome. And then there's Sweden and the USA...The Sweden guy looks like a nice dude to be your uncle. And the USA guy is in a Superman costume...like WTF
Some of the costumes were amazing , I’m so disappointed with the USA costume. Seriously?? Superman 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ Based on face alone, Holy cow Poland and South Africa are gorgeous.
Pitty there is no Netherlands with wooden shows or original clothing
Hey Australia! Put up Chris Hemsworth in all his glory and he will wipe the floor with this lot!
The 'Guam' guy topped the charts for me. Rest, really good (other than the American one)..
I love how Australia isn't even represented. what would our national dress be? thongs/flip flops, stubbie shorts and a chesty singlet with a cork hat!!!
These are fantastic !!! Looks like i need to take a trip to Sri Lanka , Indonesian and Hati to name a few lol hahah !
A Vietnamese descendent representing Czech Republic like that made me laugh hard. I kinda like it though, he looks like a nice guy enjoying this nonsense 😉
Actually, maybe USA's national outfit would be shorts and a football jersey.
For those complaining about the USA, you must not know what a touchy subject race/ ethnicity/ cultural heritage is here. This traditional wear contest would just be asking for a s**t storm because we come from all over the world. Mr USA himself doesn't look Caucasian or African American or Naive American. His heritage could be a mixture of any or all or somthing else all together. People not from here automatically think of the three I listed as more indicative of the USA, but that could not be further from the truth. Americans can agree on pop culture for the most part, but we're not at all ready to say who we are as a country.
Perhaps that's the costume - a little bit of everything. The points you make are spot on. Whilst I think the cultural costumes give the event some much needed gravitas perhaps it not fair on all.
Load More Replies...I don't think I recall a photo that got -300 points ;D Poor USA.
Yo the American contestant legit spent 15$ at Halloween Adventure and all of his ego to come out dressed as Superman.
1) Where was Australia and New Zealand, that would have been great 2) Now I want to see them all walking down the street in those costumes, not together, just randomly walking around in that
I feel like we've gone full Hunger Games, judging them on their district outfits lol
why do we have to hate on other people, ugh, all I see are backhanded compliments and all the sudden everyone is an expert, these people put a lot of work in to these, and frankly they look better than any of you haters would have done
USA.... just NO!!! That’s who you want to be, not who you really are. Our heritage is NOT Krypton... Native Indian, any tribe, would have been appropriate. Not this egotistical wish!
Who decided that those costumes represent everyone who lives and has lived in those countries. A lot of them seem like stereotypes. The USA costume seems to be a criticism of the USA's place in the world.
Each country presents its own candidate. There's a team of people behind. Mister USA organicers choose all the costumes for the USA candidate, Mister Japan the Japan's one, and so on.
Load More Replies...I noticed that most of the South and Central Americans were of Spanish/European origin. I guess that celebrating the "victory" of colonialism is part and parcel of these competitions... Or perhaps the author was under the impression that, as long as somebody's skin has some level of melanin, they qualify as "native" of some non-European country. PS. Superman was invented by an immigrant, and was supposed to be the ultimate immigrant - a refugee from a dead world, has super powers but needs to hide them and pretend to be weak and ineffectual so as not to raise the ire of the surrounding non-immigrant population. In the original strip, Superman was mostly fighting against the people who were oppressing working Americans - corrupt politicians, landlords, developers, organized crime, etc. In essence, about as representing of the USA as one can think
Wrong on so many levels. Where's the original costumes with "Original" models. Australia? I'd be offended to see a white man in nothing else but a loin cloth and hunting apparel. Culturally wrong, historically wrong and offensive. Classified as contemporary art, yer well thats ok.
Thank you to all the handsome gentlemen for sharing a part of their cultural heritage!
