Man Discovers A Family Of Mice Living In His Garden, Builds Them A Miniature Village
Recently, wildlife photography aficionado Simon Dell stumbled upon the family of a cute mouse running around his garden. Instead of reaching for the traps, however, he took out his tools. Dell built the mice a miniature village, and they repaid him by posing for adorable animal photography shots.
“I was out one day just taking photos of the birds in the garden and having just cut the grass I noticed something moving on the ground,” Simon told Bored Panda. “I pointed my camera at the ground and was shocked but very happy to see a very cute little house mouse standing up just like a meerkat in the fresh cut grass.”
“I knew instantly the cute animal was a star and ran back inside to get a couple of peanuts to put down for him. Sitting there, waiting, it was only minutes before he came back out for the treats.”
“It was at that point I thought I would give the little mouse a shelter and safe place to hide and feed.”
“I had a bit of experience taking cute photos of wildlife and mice as I also had another mouse that used to live in my garden shed and only come out after dark. He was a wood mouse, and we named him Stuart.”
“He was once a single mouse, but he left at the start of spring 2018, maybe to find a mate. Hoping he comes back this winter and maybe he could get to know the new mice in the garden.”
“We get all kinds of wildlife in the garden. Many types of birds, such as starlings, house sparrows, blackbirds, robins, and more. Even a grey heron who has taken most of the goldfish from my ponds.”
“We also have a fox that visits every night and a lot of hedgehogs and squirrels.”
“At first there was just the one mouse. He had a cut in his ear, and we called him George. I piled some small logs around a box as a home for the mouse and covered it with moss and straw to give him a little shelter.”
“I could see the cats sitting just feet away at the other side of a fence, so the log pile also gave him a bit more safety.”
“I then put up some wire fencing along the fence, so there was no way the cats could get to the mouse. I also have a small Jack Russell Terrier dog, so the cats know not to come in the garden, and the dog pays the mice no attention.”
“A couple of days later, I noticed there could be more than one mouse inside the log pile, and it was not long ’till they both came out for a bit of food.”
“I decided to build them a home as I wanted to give them a safe place in the garden and not fall prey to cats or other animals. Also, as I was feeding the mice, it was the right thing to do as I would feel it was my fault getting them to come out if they became prey. Being a wildlife photographer, I wanted to create a nice looking habitat for any pictures I would take.”
“The first stage of the log pile was very easy and only took an hour or so to make. As more mice came the following days, however, I made changes, adding more rooms. The inside of the box structure has 2-3 ways in and out, so they can escape if need be. Over the weeks and months, the log pile village has been steadily growing.”
“I added more space and made it ready for a cold winter, giving the mice the best chance possible to survive. I have counted around 5 or more mice and the female, Mildred, is looking pregnant so hoping we will have a large litter of baby mice around Christmas.”
“Knowing mice can have up to 14 babies, I could be building many more log pile rooms. But I have space and don’t mind living alongside such cute and very photogenic little critters.”
“The food I give them is usually all natural. I pick or collect berries, nuts, and fruits that grow wild just over the road in the Shire Brook Valley Local Nature Reserve. I also give them the same mix of seeds that I put on the bird tables along with sunflower seeds and other hazel or walnuts. As a treat, I give them a couple of dry mealworms and some suet pellets but do try and stick to natural, healthy food.”
“I have always liked photography but have only owned a DSLR for around three years now, slowly building up my kit and upgrading cameras to improve my skills and also help get better mouse pictures and images of other wildlife.”
“A better kit and a good lens help but nothing beat learning how to control the camera, understand the settings, and learn to understand the wildlife you are taking photos of. To help get closer or know where and when to find your subjects.”
“The mice are still here and living a very happy life. It is winter now, so the days are shorter and they come out less often. Once it gets dark, it can be hard to see them. However, I see them come out in the day for food and it is always all gone by the next morning. I also give them handfuls of feathers from an old pillow and they take that to line their beds inside and keep them warm on these cold UK winter nights.”

Load More Replies...Cute. My initial thought was; s**t, he is going to have mice infestation in his house. I used to live in an old farmhouse and would catch ~10 mice from september-december. But accommodating them like this could probably keep them from taking up recidency in his house.
When I was living in a duplex apartment at my University, I used to keep a planter in the driveway that held tomato plants. The tomatoes were coming in nicely. But one day I came home to find all but three tomatoes gone..two green and one underripe. "Who the heck is stealing my tomatoes" I thought. Then two days later, I caught my thief. A large grey squirrel. I never knew they liked tomatoes. I started putting apples out for them..and they finally left my tomatoes alone.
Load More Replies...it's so amazingly beautiful, it's a little mice town...and they are in the garden so there is no problem. Such a cuteness, you have great ideas for creating their astounding environment. Well done, preserve, not kill <3
Truly, "If you build it, they will come." Since they have such a pleasant outdoor habitat they likely won't get into the house. These are just adorable, I can't wait for Spring to see how the decorations will look.
omg these are amazing ! Just yesterday one of my colleagues was telling me how she put out poison because she discovered mice in her house and she was completely freaking out. I told her that I just recently watched a video of a beautiful barn owl that had ingested poison flopping around and slowly dying, that what she's doing doesn't only affect the mice, but everything that eats the mice and it continues on to a long chain that she couldn't possibly foresee. When you're killing animals that kill mice then that's pretty stupid. I basically ruined her day. Someone has to speak up for them. I think I made an impact. I hope so.
In nearly every picture you can see the mouse thinking, "Why are you doing this? I don't understand."
Totally beats the birdhouses I hang outside my apartment window.

They're adorable and his pictures are wonderful but unless he lives way out in the country, I can't imagine his neighbors want lots of mice running around and reproducing. They won't all live in the cute houses he builds, they'll look in other places. Maybe I'm too much of a city girl.
They really are cute, but I can't imagine how many there will be in the next year or two. They reproduce faster than bunnies.
It's very photogenic and cute. When I was a kid I use to make drawings like these. Now as an adult, I wonder how will you ever get rid of them if they multiply beyond capacity?
If they're full they sure won't venture in your house. Great thinking Batman!

I love mice - I've had so many as pets over the years - however - be careful you don''t end up with an infestation! They stop been so cute when they're leaving droppings all over the house.....
This is so wonderful! You've created Mouseville and it is one of the best things I've seen.
They are sooooo adorable. What a shame that they breed so many so quickly that they become such a pest, otherwise they'd make a perfect little friend. Brilliant photos....
That is absolutely amazing! I have live-traps in my house because the mice think it's so much fun to live in my kitchen. I don't think so myself, but I can't bear to kill them. Too cute! You have inspired me!
Hi Simon Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic pix's I think I've just fallen in love with your mice. They kinda remind me of the Borrows Family. Next time you post more pix of them I need a "cute alert." Take care Coreen

As a photographer this really spoke to me. I can see the passion in each photo. You really to the time to understand your subject in a way that lest others into their little world but without invading their space. These photos are breathtaking.
What a Great person you are....you warm my heart, and of those little mice too. Never stop being you and thank you for sharing 💖💖💖

Mice may be sort of cute, but they are vermin and carry diseases and reproduce exponentially. We don't need more mice.
What a lovely way to treat mice, so much nicer than what most people would do.
I love this ! So thoughtful and better having their own village and taking up residence in the owners house ! Why are people so afraid of these wee timid creatures !
Wowwww! You're really an artist. I never knew that mice can be that cute subjects for photo ops....I couldnt stop scrolling til your last shot. I love the ones with them inside.... Very well done. More kudos to your patience of putting up their village.... Keep up the good works.
"We also have a fox that visit us every night" - no sh*t Sherlock. The fox is there for the rodents that you're breeding for him/her.
Be glad for the fox, without it the mice soon expand their habitat into the house.

What a beautiful article. Enjoyed very much. All are God’s creatures. Loved it. Can’t wait for more😁🤗
The pics are awesome. Hope your neighbours don't have issues with the mice, not everyone would see them the way you do.
Absolutely loved this story! Hope it's made into a book! What a kind hearted person to do that!
What an idea to build a village for mice :-D. But it is absolutly beautiful....as beautiful as the fotos you made!
So now what you need is a snake lair where the reptiles can survive the winter and perhaps build doors that are snakeproof so the mice can escape and be safe inside, but the snakes will lie in wait. You'll have it easier controlling the snake population than you will the mice!
As a photographer for 40 years I know how much patience was involved and how many pictures you had to take for this post. The mice are darling and you are a very nice and kind man. Keep up the good work. However, the number can spiral out of control so you might want to do something about birth control. Just sayin. You might want to consult with a vet.
This is such a treat for me to see all your photos. I fostered a baby wild mouse for a about a year a couple of years ago, so this is very special to me :) ...I ended up with 5 mice total at the end, trying to find a perfect companion for the little rescue rascal among a pet store mice. They all had their own personalities, but the wild one, "Firby, the Rocketman" (she was a girl actually as I discovered a little later, but the way that tiny bit could launch herself in the air was out of this world skill, hence 'the rocketman', lol... wild instincts don't give in easily... she was also super smart) was the most vibrant one for sure :) ....and my last domesticated one - Zoey - was such a caring soul.
What happens when they multiply unreasonably and your village needs to become the size of NY?
I look after a bunch of mooses (mice) that I have caught at Evolution Diet Pet Food Co. & at home over the past 20 years. Mice at Evolution Diet are caught live in see-through steel traps & they are either set free or kept as pets. I have 5 terrariums and clean them every day and feed them Evolution Diet Organic, Non GMO Cat-Dog Food along with Valerian Root (1-500 mg cap per cup of food) so they don't breed and Cranberry Powder (1-700 mg capsule per 2 cups) so they do not develop urinary tract infection. Some of our Pet Mice are over 8 Human Years of age. They are beautiful and easy to handle by their tails. The mice terrariums are fish tanks with mesh tops. I use Uber shredded newspaper for covering the bottom of the cages. Mice must have an 8 inch to 10 inch wheel to run on so that they get their exercise every day. Mice are very much fun to watch. Out of the 40 or so Mice I take care of, a few actually like to be held by their tails on my arm and get rubbed & petted.
this is absolutely beautiful and really makes your garden lovely to view. Glad the mice are happy, all of your photos are stunning, keep adding rooms and keep posting pictures.
These are absolutely beautiful. What a wonderful way to spend a few moments on a Sunday morning
I've always liked mice - though I don't want them inside (the cats seem to discourage that). I have rescued several from those damned glue traps and taken them outside to be set free. Got my boss at a big NYC agency to ban those traps in our building. If you're going to kill something, kill it - but don't let them languish and suffer on those things.
Oh my God, this is my kind of heaven. To think that a man is as gentle and patient as this I just magic x
That is so very cool!! The best critters I can find are lizards...
The original grey mouse was evicted by a brown rat but, whatever... it’s all good.
Keep up the lovely work Simon - such a contrast to those hunting and killing wildlife - Thank you
So stupid. Disease carrying rodents. They're not pets, they're wild animals. Destructive wild animals. We live next to a field and rats and mice are a menace. They get in our shed and our attic and destroy things. I quit counting after I trapped about 3 dozen. After keeping it up for a couple of more weeks I finally had them quit coming around. I now have poison bait stations out for any stragglers. Good riddance pests.
I love this and can't understand people being afraid of mice, my cats regularly bring them into the house alive, we humanely catch them and put them back outside !!!!!
The cutest, most loved and most spoiled bunch of mice I've ever seen! What a creativity - and a real understanding of these little critters' needs. Bravo!

This is so overwhelmingly cute I might have actually teared up a little. Def a feel good piece! Thank you.
Thank you for being so kind to these little guys. You are making holy moments! Keep up the good work!
Last year we live trapped at least 8 "Mice"..more like rats because they were 4" or 6" long not including their tail. We let them go 6 kms away in some fields. Even though our area is fully developed it was an agricultural area not more than 20 years ago....so there's lots of wildlife under ground or in the forests and fields nearby.
Delightful, as well as compassionate! Must be channeling Beatrix Potter! Good Karma!
Only a few people will understand this. I can almost hear them say: Hail the God of Housing!!! Like the Aeslin Mice from the InCryptid series by Seanan McGuire <3 <3 <3
George and Mildred! What beautiful pictures and I’m glad these little cuties are protected from cats.
If only there were more people like this man and his gentle loving soul...those mice are positively adorable!
This made my week! Not only is it heartwarming and adorable, the pictures themselves are so beautiful and colorful and the log village itself is gorgeous and artistic!
That was the cutest BP ever! You're a good person to give them so much love.
Wait until more mice want to immigrate illegally. 2 mice? Nice. 200 mice? No nice.
Wait till more mice want to immigrate this wonderland of food. 2 mice, nice. 200 mice, no nice.
Okay, I'm going to rain on the parade. When we moved into this house, there were mice in the garage and kitchen and bedrooms and front room... you get the picture. There was mouse poop all over. We got rid of the mice the only way that worked - mouse traps. We stopped counting at 24. Then, we had rats in the garage, etc. They even chewed through the TV cable. The dogs got them. Good boy. It's all very sweet to build them houses and feed them, however, you want to be very sure there is no mousy access to your house. They will have lots of babies and move in if you aren't careful.
This is the perfect story for a wonderful poem, made famous by the wonderful Dr. Herriot stories from many years ago: “All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings. The purple headed mountain, The river running by, The sunset, and the morning, That brightens up the sky. The cold wind in the winter, The pleasent summer sun, The ripe fruit in the garden, He made them every one. He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell, How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well.” ― Cecil Frances Alexander
Adorable... please, keep taking pictures and building more lodgings for your little garden guests!
This man is precious. Those pictures are like from Disney movie! Cuteness and sweetness overload. Mice are so nice, harmless creatures! Sure they can be a problem for grain factories... But in general I don't mind them at all. I hope they will survive the winter, have healthy babsies for Christmas and the colony will thrive :D

Bravo!
Love this love mice and other cute critters, love photographer too, he made my day!!

Dear gods, that is the cutest thing ever. What a beautiful man. We need more people like that in the world, and i think there'd be more peace. What a sweet gesture. He did an amazing job on their village.
What a wonderful way to use your skills, and I'm sure the mice love it
Love, Love what you are doing..my husband would do the same thing ..we love all animals domestic and wild..<3
Fantastic, I love the home you have made for the mice in your garden.
Cute and mother nature at her best, exept divine intervention (man) are the only hazzards I see, fingers crossed they be ok through winter
So very nice of you and they are the most fortunate mice - food and cosy home which mouse could ask for more

FABULOUS PHOTOS, and a very kind heart you have. Cutest little fur-angels. <3 <3 <3

Load More Replies...Adorable! I’ve always thought mice were cute! These remind me of little stories my mother used to make up about a family of mice . . . It’s like it came alive! Thank you for these precious hair balls!
Simon, you made my day!! charming, warm, lovely and you're a great photographer!!! thanks for posting!
These are super cute and creative! Glad to see you have a kind heart. :)
The tiny bottled water had me roflmao. I love miniature everything, but that was just too much.
They'll be a lot less cute when they've multiplied over and over and you find them in his house, not the one he built for them
