This post is basically a tribute to the sometimes undeservedly underrated branch of science known as statistics, which is all about collecting, analyzing, presenting, and interpreting data. From governmental census data to financial data and planning, business, sports and weather forecasting and much more, statistics is used in virtually every aspect of our lives.

It keeps us informed and in touch with current events by giving a unique perspective on facts and their relation with each other.

So in order to show us all how it was not worth it to skip stats class back in high school, we are diving into some of the most interesting threads on Reddit where people shared the most intriguing, random and mind-blowing statistics. Get yourself a cuppa and enjoy this entertaining bunch of random data below!

50 ‘Weird Facts’ About The World That Might Give You A Fresh Perspective 20% OR MORE of pregnancies end in miscarriage. 20% is just "known pregnancies" and doesn't take into account all the women who just think "oh, my period was a day late, weird" without realizing they've actually had a very early miscarriage.

That is stunningly high compared to what we've been led to believe. If you think of all the women you know who either have or have tried to have children, there's an excellent chance that several of them have had a miscarriage before.

When you realize exactly how common it is, it makes it that much more sad that it is so stigmatized. If we talked about it more, maybe it wouldn't catch so many people off guard.

“Wify” or “Weefee” (short “e”) is pronouced in Slovakia as well (just with one F). As many other english words we have taken over where is “i” because we pronounce it here as english pronounce “e” and not “aj” 😁 Tried my best to explain it 😀 I think also Czech and Hungarian do it as well (Poland too?) and i think many other european countries, so i think it will be more than 8%. I just realized that in english pronuciation i heard it only in America, everywhere else i just heard “wify” 😀

50 ‘Weird Facts’ About The World That Might Give You A Fresh Perspective Astronomer here! One that has blown my mind is statistically it is now believed that every star has extrasolar planets around it. It turns out every one near us does, at least. At the very worst case, Kepler has shown that 70% of all stars have a planet orbiting its parent star at Earth's distance or closer.

Further, per the Kepler mission data it is now believed 17% of all stars have an Earth-sized planet around it.

I mean, we knew there were a lot, but this means there's at least a trillion planets in our own Milky Way galaxy. The thought makes me giddy!

It makes me optimistic that there may be life out there, and possibly intelligent life. On the flip side, it took almost the entire life of the planet for intelligent life to appear. The earth is thought to be 4.543 billion years old. Early on, the planet was an uninhabitable ball of magma and took a while to cool and for liquid water to appear. The first life appeared 3.77 billion years ago, the first multicellular life appeared only 600 million years ago, the first dinosaurs appeared 243 and 233.23 million years ago, and the first Homo sapiens dated back to 300,000 years ago. The first civilization appeared only 4,000 to 3,000 BCE. This is relatively late as Earth can probably only support life for only another 150 mil-1.5 billion years until the sun gradually brighteners and vaporizes our planet's water depending on what models are used. If it is only 150 mil years or much less if we do it first. This means that intelligent life formed kind of at the last minute for our planet.

There are two long fences! One fence cuts off the south-east quarter of the country and is intended to stop dingos. It's about 5,600km, which is slightly longer than the distance from London to New York. The other fence cuts off the western part of the country and is intended to stop rabbits and other pests. It's about 3,300 km, so a fair bit shorter than the distance from London to New York. Obviously the post is referring to the dingo fence.

50 ‘Weird Facts’ About The World That Might Give You A Fresh Perspective If the earth was the size of a basketball then the atmosphere would be about as thick as a coat of paint. The only thing that separates us from the cold, harsh, vacuum of space is this comparably tiny layer of gasses that are held in place by gravity.

Another interesting one is that the only thing preventing the Earth from becoming a barren rock not unlike Mars is the fact we still have a molten core that generates a magnetic field that shields the atmosphere from being swept away by the solar wind. When the core eventually stops spinning it's game over.

This can easily be disproven. What is writing made from? Papyrus? Rock? Ceramic? On a cave wall? If it was on anything that was biodegradable it would not still exist now after 200,000 years. Just because we have not found it does not mean it didn't exist.

50 ‘Weird Facts’ About The World That Might Give You A Fresh Perspective I've posted this before on a similar thread, but..

Had an Economics Professor blow my mind with this. Most people think of millions, billions and trillions relatively similarly. They are huge numbers and when talking about money not very many people really ever have to account with numbers that high to see the incredible difference between each. I think this does a great job of breaking it down.

If you made **$1/second**, you'd be really really rich. At that rate, you would make:

**$60** in 1 minute

**$3600** in 1 hour

**$86,400** in 1 day

**$1 Million ($1,000,000)** in 11.574 days

**$1 Billion ($1,000,000,000)** in 31.7 years

**$1 Trillion ($1,000,000,000,000)** in 31,709 years

For one person who makes a Million dollars every 12 days to pay off the US National Debt (21.461 Trillion according to www.usdebtclock.org), it would take over **680,506 years.**

I will probably get downvoted for this and get banned but I don't care. If was pregnant and it was detected the foetus had down syndrome, I would abort. Not everyone with down syndrome are adorable happy people that can be independent. Some are like babies their whole lives and need a lot more special, lifelong care. I personally could not cope. Kudos to anyone who has/can, just remember that not everyone has the ability, whether emotional, financial, physical or mental etc.

I have a child with relatively mild additional needs in comparison to DS but one thing I will say is that when I decided to keep my pregnancy...I didn't even consider the possibility that I would become a lifelong carer as a result. Had I known that back then...I may have made a different choice. I love my child but when I think about how my future is already mapped out and that I'll never have a life of my own again...it makes me very depressed.

Hey, I respect you. I'm not sure what I would do. If I had the money to be able to care for a child with special needs & I was comfortable enough to be able to afford help so I could still work & stuff I think I'd keep it. But if I found out right now I had a child with DS... I wouldn't have a choice. I'd have to. I mean, I can't afford kids anyway. But like... that's a whole other factor financially. But I'm also in the US so id be forced to have the baby anyway... ruining their life & my own & probably having to put them up for adoption where they would most likely not find a home.. & only know a life of pain & abandonment. But yay!!! Abortion is becoming illegal & women are no longer considered autonomous beings! We have less rights than fucken guns people.

Some of the replies here are absolutely ignorant. I have several friends with down syndrome siblings. The toll it takes on their parents and then themselves later in life to care for their brother/sister is significant. Not all of them can be integrated into society. In two cases, sometimes they get violent. You don't know what triggers them but when they do they throw one hell of a tantrum. Imagine a toddler the size of a full grown adult man throw stuff and flailing their limbs. You deal with that until in your 40s and then 50s and let me know if you could keep that up.

When my wife was pregnant with our first child they wanted to conduct a certain test, and it didn't seem important, so we kept putting it off. The doctor told us we didn't have much time left for the test, and we asked why. She said that it would tell us if the fetus had Downs, and we needed to know soon or it would be too late to abort the baby. We wouldn't have aborted, but decided to get the test because we'd want to prepare for a Downs baby if we were going to have one. We didn't.

Ok, do some of the people understand what people here are saying?? They are not saying that these people can’t be happy and lead good lives. They are not saying that they deserve to die. They are saying that caring for someone disabled can be hard. Mentally and physically. Sometimes you can’t leave them alone, ever. And some people, even as adults, are mentally children. People get tired dealing with normal sized kids but imagine having to watch over and care for an adult sized one. Some people can do it and some people can’t. And it’s wrong to force someone to take on that responsibility.

I've worked with children and adults with down syndrome, and many of them are more honest and loving than most "normal" people. Many people with down syndrome live, again, "normal' lives from marrying, to being parents, to holding jobs, living on their own, to bringing a tremendous amount of joy to those of us so blessed to know them.

But then again, not one single, solitary person on this thread had even indicated the implication of the mere though of murder. What they’ve been talking about is ABORTION. And of course, as every thinking adult knows, abortion isn’t even remotely connected to the act of murder. It’s not in the same ballpark. It’s not in the same city. It’s not in the same galaxy, in fact, no, that’s not quite enough, it’s not in the same dimensional reality. Spare me, you sanctimonious shìt. I’d also absolutely love to see you being the constant, around the clock, life long and forever carer for that cousin of yours, and see how strong your delusion of moral high ground is then. “Having a cousin that…” doesn’t really put you in a position to judge people who has to choose wether or not to have an eternal toddler as their absolute focus point for the rest of their lives, now does it. Because that’s very well how it can end. Easy with the judgement, and for future reference it’s probably better to use the word “murder” only when actually speaking about murder, don’t you think? I do. I really think that’d be best for everybody.

God help these bored pandas when they google "antinatalism". I'll give you a clue. It says you should abort every pregnancy. NOT my theory. It was coined by a philosophy professor.

It's pretty fair for a person to decide for themselves what they will or will not be able to handle.

If the whole of existence since the Big Bang were collapsed into [one year](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_Calendar#/media/File%3ACosmic_Calendar.png), modern humans developed at 8 minutes to midnight and Columbus landed in the New World 1.2 seconds before midnight. Maybe; maybe not! Sometimes 'facts' are repeated too much that they become true. I'm not a geneticist but if my history is right Genghis Khan gained prominence by banding clans from a general area. So, maybe these guys had the Y-chromosome from an even earlier descendant (who's not as famous).

50 ‘Weird Facts’ About The World That Might Give You A Fresh Perspective The [take out] radius of a neutron star quake. Keep in mind that the richter scale is log based and a neutron star quake has been recorded as high as an equivalent 34 and would cause mass extinction to a radius of 10 light years. The distance from the earth to the sun is one AU. The distance from earth to pluto is about 40 AU. Earth to the farthest object in our solar system (the edges of the oort cloud at 120,000 AU) is roughly 1.87 lightyears. A neutron star quake would exterminate all life in all directions a little over 5 times the entire distance of our solar system. This all from a neutron star’s surface adjusting by a few micrometers in less than .000001 of a second. The earthquake that leveled San Fran and [took away] thousands of people in the early 20th century was a 7.4. Cool, now imagine a quake with destructive energy about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stronger.
