Some of the most fascinating things in life hide behind mundanity. You’ll have to look a little closer to notice what makes them stand out, just like in the photos you’re about to see.

These snapshots come from the Mildly Interesting subreddit. All 24 million members share the same captivation over eye-catching things embedded within the humdrum of daily life. Here, people share pictures of random laser lights appearing in the night sky, square-shaped watermelons, and chia seeds sprouting from toothbrushes.

If reading that confused you, check out this list we’ve compiled to see for yourself. Scroll through and see if you find at least one that grabs your attention.

Oh yes, wrap me up like an amazon package and mail me to the Gods. I've never wanted an expensive fancy casket.

YES! It's burned anyway (I want to be cremated) and I will be dead so what do I need mahogany and silk for? This is a great option. I do not want to burden my family with any unnecessary costs

When my grandma passed away we got her an extremely basic plywood casket, because she was being cremated. Then we brought a bunch of rainbow coloured markers and got everyone at her service to draw and write lovely messages all over it. I still tear up thinking about it 🥹

When Grandpa died, we went with Grandma to look at caskets. The funeral director told her to remember she's just buying a wooden box. Kind of him.

Yup, these are becoming pretty popular here. I'm Jewish so I'm just getting put into a simple pine coffin that doesn't even have nails on it so it's environmentally friendly- I'll find out if I can get this instead actually.

Don't worry with the nails. They're environmentally friendly too. Τhey rust and deteriorate.

It is in Finland. The whole coffin including the lining has to be decomposable. Same goes for the cremation urns.

No, not really. People are heavy. Try carrying one horizontal without the cardboard bending in the middle, or anything leaking. They must be well made.

My father passed away in 2008, here in NZ, our funeral director suggested we buy a cardboard liner. The liner (or cardboard casket) sits inside a more elaborate coffin throughout the ceremony, after which the cardboard box with deceased inside is removed & cremated. It was just one of the many simple suggestions made which bought our costs down allowing us to give Dad the send off he so well deserved. In stark contrast just a week later, north of the city we live, my Mum's brother passed away. We met with the only funeral director in the remote town (who I didn't particularly like) & enquired if we could have a cardboard liner as we'd had for Dad. The funeral director, taking full advantage of the monopoly he held stated it was "disrespectful & disgraceful" to suggest that one might choose to have a cardboard box as opposed to a wooden casket for a loved one! I made it clear to him after the funeral exactly what I thought of him & his greedy narrow minded approach!

I agree. Those money grubbers want folks who are using cremation to buy a casket. Also there are more than one religious sect that does not embalm or try to preserve the body. Excellent. I hope I live until my state legalizes composting in 2027. They could transport my body to the facility using this kind of coffin.

Best idea ever for a quick sensible funeral, little waste, the dead really can't care. I reckon it is a bit pricy, depending on the lining of course has to be 'waterproofed'

I find it interesting that these cardboard boxes are being marketed (& sold?) to the general “Private” public. This is the box used for "Public" (paupers or poor) people no one claims, where family is not found, or, the family chooses to relinquish all familial rights over the deceased persons remains or land usage now and in the forever future. Even if a Private family could choose a cardboard box for a full body interment, most cemeteries require what is called an "outside container" (concrete, steel, liner) which the casket is placed into before burial. One reason for usage of outside containers is consideration of bio-hazard impacts of decaying human remains on the ground water or other water ways in communities, and, animal depredation. Human bodies decaying in cardboard boxes in cemetery grounds of an established community …. Yeah, better ask a LOT of questions on this item.

Wow 85 bucks for a cardboard box??? Pretty expensive cardboard. But I like the idea of a cardboard box. I heard about someone who bought one and let their grandkids draw pictures all over it when they brought it home. Had it folded up in the attic till they needed it.

Why does there need to be a coffin at all, unless the body is really in bad shape? I am against expensive coffins, embalming, or any other wasteful excesses over a dead body, and that includes cremation (the emission alone are a problem).

$85 for a large cardboard box? The mark up on that is still unnecessarily high. Just order something small from Amazon and they’ll ship it to you in a box that’s way too big, do it a few times, stick the boxes together and you’ve got a cardboard casket for free

MorticiaRS

That’s a cremation box. Most crematoriums require the body is in a container. Most American cemeteries will still require “vault”.

The terms "top shelf" or "bottom shelf" comes from liquor sales and how the good stuff is on higher shelves. But it looks like the same idea here. The sign for the carboard casket is literally just above the baseboard / carpet.

We all have tedious tasks that immediately bore us when they appear on our daily to-do list. However, as author and speaker Steve Pavlina points out, finding something interesting amidst mundanity is all about perspective.

Take your least favorite household chore. The mere thought of it likely drains your energy. But as Pavlina wrote in an article for his website, you can pair these activities with enjoyable activities, like listening to music or your favorite audiobook.

Life comes with dull moments, and there’s no escaping them. And if you accept such a reality, you may find something interesting in it, too. This is a perspective that writer and TV presenter Adrian Chiles follows.

In an article for The Guardian, Chiles noted how “embracing the boring” became his secret to happiness. He applies it to all facets of life, including personal and professional relationships and “affairs of the heart and wallet.”
