These are Starlings, and when I say they're one of my favorite birds most people make faces because they are seen as pests in the U.S. They are one of about 60 species of birds that were mentioned in Shakespeare's novels. A fanatic of Shakespeare, long ago, thought it'd be fun/neat/a tribute to release starlings in New York's Central Park as a nod to Shakespeare . 60 Starlings were released and now it's estimated there are an estimated 200 million. They eat crops like a cloud of locusts, groups get sucked into jet engines. They also make these huge patterns and it's getting rarer and rarer to see. I love starlings as during breeding season they get brown and black outlined with rainbow sheen and look quite "steam punk". They also are great mimics and will sit and talk, burr, click, whistle and try to sound like other birds. They're so funny. They always make me smile. So how does the bird in the center know when the leader changes direction?

Not too many starlings out here in New Mexico...that is fine with me. So many other cool birds including Canyon Towhees who yell at the door every morning for me to bring out their seed. Very friendly and eat out of my hand. I do miss cardinals and blue jays (we have gorgeous scrub jays and electric blue blue birds). Four species of hummingbirds and I put the feeders out on April 1. We get a MOB of them and love them all! Then of course, the neighborhood Roadrunner who LOVES ham! The ravens and crows are my watch dogs. They wait on the fence until I take care of my horses, then they know it is their turn to get fed. They ALWAYS let me know when coyotes are around. As long as the coyotes don't bother the horses, they are fine and I don't try to chase them away. Every part of the country has their own special birds, that is for sure. I am so happy to live out here in the Wild West. Still not crowded and room for every special living creature!

Astonishingly beautiful. There really are so many things that we will never know about other animal species. Such as... Is this how those birds communicate?
In a world where we are surrounded by screens, taking the time to unplug and go outside can do wonders for reducing stress as well. Nature has a calming effect on our brains, even if we are going outside for just five minutes each day. Plus, outdoor exercise, like going for a walk, hiking, and so forth, gets the blood flowing and heart pumping, another way to lower stress levels.

They're called "persistent pupillary membranes". They're leftover from when mammals have a blood source directly feeding the lens while still a fetus. Usually it doesn't interfere with vision. Humans can get them too!

Gorgeous markings. Not nearly as exciting, but in the late 70’s I had a black and white cat named Ralph: both of his armpits were bright white and a perfect lateral white crescent gave him a furry white smiley face on his tummy. When I was younger, we found a little caterpillar in our backyard. We put him in a jar with air holes, sticks, and plants. He would only eat parsley though, so that’s what we named him, parsley. We actually took him to our grandparents house while he was in his cocoon. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch him come out, but it was an experience.

Tideway. Do be mindful of them when going out at low tide. They are passageways by which the tide flows in and out, and might cut you off from the land if you pass them carelessly and get the timing wrong. They can be deep and torrential and dangerous when the tide comes in, even if they looked inconspicuous when you crossed them. If you want to be safe when exploring at low tide, check where the safe areas are and stick to those places.

Yeah, my mother lives on an island in Maine, and there's another a small uninhabited island adjacent to it that's accessible by a sandbar during low tide. If you walk over there and explore for too long, the tide comes in and you're either staying for another six hours or wading/swimming to get back to the big island.

It's not. When the tide is out, the sands at Dunbar are vast. This bridge allows you to cross a stream that remains even when the tide is right out. The stream is too deep to want to wade through. So it is a VERY useful bridge. I have crossed it 100 times.

Had the same with a tree we dropped next to a church. The area had suffered bomb damage during ww2 and the trees were riddled with shrapnel. Lots of sharpening done that day but was interesting to see.

tree layers grow out of thin air, so a golf ball must have hit the tree and got stuck. then, over time, it became permanently stuck in there as the layers grew.

I used to tend a garden in London where I would find 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7- leaf clovers, REGULARLY. Like, multiple times in a weeding session. I used to keep checking myself as it didn't seem possible but it kept happening. Maybe the house was on a nuclear waste dump ;)

Happens when snow is compressed. The snow around blows away and leaves a raised 'impression'. You can see this with footprints as well.

That’s a Cossid moth (Lepidoptera: Cossidae). There are many hundreds of described species, some of which can get quite large and heavy, with wingspans over 9 inches. They are unusual in that the caterpillars are wood borers rather than foliage feeders, taking 3 to 5 years to mature before pupating. That makes them the most long-lived of the Lepidoptera.

You are seeing the individual "carpels", which is the botanic term for what you might think of as the "seed-holding specialized leaf". In (most) higher plants, the carpels are fused close so the seeds are protected inside. Plants can have different numbers of carpels, and the carpels can be fused individually or as a group. Here, you can see that a zucchini has 4 carpels fused together. NOT the spade-like structures though - but see the fine line in the middle of each? That's the fusion line between the carpels.

This is a common cultural practice for farmers in the south when a freeze is predicted once what growers do when a freeze is predicted and their crop, mostly fruits have budded and started to form. When water freezes and turns into ice, it releases latent heat. Then, the ice that builds up on the plant will insulate it from the colder surrounding air temperatures.
