50 ‘Mildly Interesting’ Things Spotted In Nature That Are Actually Surprising (New Pics)
OK, I know "mildly interesting" doesn't sound as exciting as "nature is f**king lit" or "nature is metal" but this subreddit also features lit and metal pictures of Mother Earth.
Since its creation in 2012, r/MildlyInteresting has become one of the biggest communities on Reddit. It has over 18.7 million members, with thousands browsing the sub at any given moment.
As Bored Panda showed in our previous article, nature is one of the most popular themes in this colorful corner of the Internet—whether it's a random fact or a unique photo, the surprises keep on coming. Continue scrolling and check out the most recent ones.

This Tree That Has Grown Across The Driveway And Sprouted More Trees Off The Top
Now, I don't know this tree, we haven't even met, but my guess would be that it was tied down to form this way. Still nice though.
Yup, I've met many trees. They may call a bit suspect but who knows. Nature is amazing

Spending some time in nature is really beneficial even if you come back without a cool photo to upload on r/MildlyInteresting. The fresh air, the sun on our skin; sometimes a short walk outside is all we need to feel refreshed and revived. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.
The University of Michigan, for example, conducted a study that revealed students who regularly went for a nature walk actually had a better time retaining information.

Flock Of Sparrows Portaying A Horse While Horses Gallop In The Background
These are more likely Starlings. This is called a murmuration.
Load More Replies...More likely to be Starlings - a murmuration. Sparrows tend to flock but not in huge numbers
These are Starlings, and when I say they're one of my favorite birds most people make faces because they are seen as pests in the U.S. They are one of about 60 species of birds that were mentioned in Shakespeare's novels. A fanatic of Shakespeare, long ago, thought it'd be fun/neat/a tribute to release starlings in New York's Central Park as a nod to Shakespeare . 60 Starlings were released and now it's estimated there are an estimated 200 million. They eat crops like a cloud of locusts, groups get sucked into jet engines. They also make these huge patterns and it's getting rarer and rarer to see. I love starlings as during breeding season they get brown and black outlined with rainbow sheen and look quite "steam punk". They also are great mimics and will sit and talk, burr, click, whistle and try to sound like other birds. They're so funny. They always make me smile. So how does the bird in the center know when the leader changes direction?
Not too many starlings out here in New Mexico...that is fine with me. So many other cool birds including Canyon Towhees who yell at the door every morning for me to bring out their seed. Very friendly and eat out of my hand. I do miss cardinals and blue jays (we have gorgeous scrub jays and electric blue blue birds). Four species of hummingbirds and I put the feeders out on April 1. We get a MOB of them and love them all! Then of course, the neighborhood Roadrunner who LOVES ham! The ravens and crows are my watch dogs. They wait on the fence until I take care of my horses, then they know it is their turn to get fed. They ALWAYS let me know when coyotes are around. As long as the coyotes don't bother the horses, they are fine and I don't try to chase them away. Every part of the country has their own special birds, that is for sure. I am so happy to live out here in the Wild West. Still not crowded and room for every special living creature!
Load More Replies...Those are likely European starlings, not sparrows. A huge flock of starlings like this is called a "murmuration".

In a world where we are surrounded by screens, taking the time to unplug and go outside can do wonders for reducing stress as well. Nature has a calming effect on our brains, even if we are going outside for just five minutes each day. Plus, outdoor exercise, like going for a walk, hiking, and so forth, gets the blood flowing and heart pumping, another way to lower stress levels.

The Way This Bird Sits While Eating
It is a woodpecker, the feet of a woodpecker is not made to sit or walk on, but to hold the bird in a vertical position against a tree trunk, So when on a flat surface it is very uncomfortable for the bird.
Studies also show that getting between 15 to 20 minutes a day of sunshine will allow your body to produce vitamin D, which helps strengthen bones and reduce the risk of cancer, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.
Furthermore, research has shown that going outdoors can help boost the immune system.

Load More Replies...“When people interrupt directed attention with even just brief times outdoors, they tend to allow for more involuntary attention,” Hasbach explained. “This becomes quite restorative for when people have to go back to directed attention.”
These benefits, however, only show up if you put down your smartphone and give nature your full attention, whether it’s a breathtaking view of the Grand Canyon or a tree near your apartment.
My Tuxedo Cat Wednesday Has White Lines Going Down Each Leg. From Underneath She Looks Skeletal
I'm not even interested in the pattern as much as I find this picture hilarious "let me oooooout!"
Gorgeous markings. Not nearly as exciting, but in the late 70’s I had a black and white cat named Ralph: both of his armpits were bright white and a perfect lateral white crescent gave him a furry white smiley face on his tummy. So cute. Wish I knew where the photo was. The kitten above is far more impressive... x-Ray cat!
Thats pretty cool looking, he looks like he's trying to bust out before the warden notices he's gone, LOL! =*)

A 225 Million Year Old Petrified Opal Tree Trunk Located In Arizona
I know that was a joke but I just want to put out there that taking any petrified wood is highly illegal, and considered to be extremely bad luck. The park receives hundreds of returned pieces every year, with notes from people saying that taking the wood ruined their lives.
Load More Replies...I live in Arizona, and am sad to say that it has been predicted that Petrified National Forest Monument may DISAPPEAR in the next 15 to 20 years, if people keep stealing "little souvenirs". The Park Service is truly concerned!!

Watched A Crimson Rose Caterpillar Metamorphosize To A Butterfly
When I was younger, we found a little caterpillar in our backyard. We put him in a jar with air holes, sticks, and plants. He would only eat parsley though, so that’s what we named him, parsley. We actually took him to our grandparents house while he was in his cocoon. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch him come out, but it was an experience.
He turned into a swallow tail butterfly. Stick with it and you patience will be rewarded.

Tideway. Do be mindful of them when going out at low tide. They are passageways by which the tide flows in and out, and might cut you off from the land if you pass them carelessly and get the timing wrong. They can be deep and torrential and dangerous when the tide comes in, even if they looked inconspicuous when you crossed them. If you want to be safe when exploring at low tide, check where the safe areas are and stick to those places.
Yeah, my mother lives on an island in Maine, and there's another a small uninhabited island adjacent to it that's accessible by a sandbar during low tide. If you walk over there and explore for too long, the tide comes in and you're either staying for another six hours or wading/swimming to get back to the big island.
Load More Replies...I mean, if you didn’t realize the tide was coming in, you could always wait on the bridge until it went back out enough to walk to safety, right?
If you look up Bridge To Nowhere on the net you will find the pictures of it when the tide is out. Its apparently in Scotland
It's not. When the tide is out, the sands at Dunbar are vast. This bridge allows you to cross a stream that remains even when the tide is right out. The stream is too deep to want to wade through. So it is a VERY useful bridge. I have crossed it 100 times.
Load More Replies...I'm a bit confused about a bridge on a beach. Dealing with water is part of the deal, surely?

Was Cutting Down A Tree At A Golf Course And Found A Golf Ball Wedged In It
The tree must have thought it was a jawbreaker and consumed it as a snack. 😆
... And to this day it is still trying to finish its snack
Load More Replies...Had the same with a tree we dropped next to a church. The area had suffered bomb damage during ww2 and the trees were riddled with shrapnel. Lots of sharpening done that day but was interesting to see.
tree layers grow out of thin air, so a golf ball must have hit the tree and got stuck. then, over time, it became permanently stuck in there as the layers grew.
Good try, but not quite... Research CODIT in Arboriculture. https://www.bartlett.com/resources/compartmentalization-of-decay-in-trees.pdf The expanded concept of CODIT also takes into account tree response to wounding and infection whereby affected tissues are compartmentalized or walled off from healthy tissue.

I would say you are right; wood sorrel for sure. Nothing to do with clovers.
Load More Replies...I have a talent for finding 4-leaf clovers 🍀! The highest I found was 6 leaf 😊
I used to tend a garden in London where I would find 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7- leaf clovers, REGULARLY. Like, multiple times in a weeding session. I used to keep checking myself as it didn't seem possible but it kept happening. Maybe the house was on a nuclear waste dump ;)
I remember finding an eight-leaf clover as a kid. It was probably just two four-leafs stuck together, but it was pretty awesome regardless.
Roughly 1 in 10,000 clovers has 4 leaves. There are no official figures on 5 leaf, but sources say you have 1 in 20,000 chance of finding one.
actually experts say that five leaves is 1 in 100,000

I don't see footprints walking away. I see a dead wolf covered in snow.
Hate to take the negative route, but there are no footprints walking away... It could be dead. And even if it isn't, it's most definitely not doing too great in terms of getting enough food. Poor thing.
I can't get past the perspective. It looks to be built up, not an impression in the snow. Please don't be fake because for a second it looked really cool.
Happens when snow is compressed. The snow around blows away and leaves a raised 'impression'. You can see this with footprints as well.

Our Kiwi Vine Produces Mostly Twins And Triplet Fruits, Enough To Showcase The Cell Division Process
All fruitful trees produce twins and triplet fruits. That's why farmers select and leave on the tree only the good fruits and drop the others in an early stage, so they can have a good harvest.
That may be obvious to some people, while others didn't know about that, so this is interesting to see. I really like this picture, and the way they've put them in order.

This 5 Inch Moth We Found In Our House Yard Today
Just a moth. If it was a spider that would have been a serious NOPE
Load More Replies...That’s a Cossid moth (Lepidoptera: Cossidae). There are many hundreds of described species, some of which can get quite large and heavy, with wingspans over 9 inches. They are unusual in that the caterpillars are wood borers rather than foliage feeders, taking 3 to 5 years to mature before pupating. That makes them the most long-lived of the Lepidoptera.

You are seeing the individual "carpels", which is the botanic term for what you might think of as the "seed-holding specialized leaf". In (most) higher plants, the carpels are fused close so the seeds are protected inside. Plants can have different numbers of carpels, and the carpels can be fused individually or as a group. Here, you can see that a zucchini has 4 carpels fused together. NOT the spade-like structures though - but see the fine line in the middle of each? That's the fusion line between the carpels.

The Sheer Number Of Colors That My Carrots Came In
Carrots were all originally purple, then people bred and genetically modified them so that most carrots now are orange
Is it my imagination or do purple and yellow carrots taste different from the orange ones? I always get heirloom carrots at the store when they have them.
I believe you're right. I wish I could find carrots like we had in our garden when I was little.

I have never really given thought about exactly HOW a catterpillar turns into a butterfly. Essentially a caterpillar liquifies and rebuilds itself into a butterfly. Nature is wild.
Biology is a game played against the background of physical and chemical laws. There are no true "biological laws", just some confinements and statistics. And there's clearly no-one asking: "Does this even make sense? Is this practical?" The only questions that matter are: "Can this next change be done with a small molecular adjustment? Does it work well enough to produce offspring and try out a next change? Yes? Good." I swear, biology is a huge, mind-boggling mess. Anything that goes, goes.

My Drone Was Chased By A Swarm Of Furious Bees
My son and I keep bees in our backyard. When I had a gas powered lawn mower, they didn't seem to mind at all, but when I switched to an electric mower, they just attacked it. I have to wear my beekeeping suit to mow the lawn. I figure it's the sound.

It Rained And Now The Grass Is Encased In Ice
Played a football game in college with the blades of grass individually encased in ice. I got a gnarly cut on my leg from them.
This is a common cultural practice for farmers in the south when a freeze is predicted once what growers do when a freeze is predicted and their crop, mostly fruits have budded and started to form. When water freezes and turns into ice, it releases latent heat. Then, the ice that builds up on the plant will insulate it from the colder surrounding air temperatures.
surprisingly, this is a lot better to sled on than snow, at lest in my experience.
