CryOky Report

Life is never as simple as one might want it to be. Even though most of us have a decent grasp of physics, as far as our own bodies are concerned, the universe still finds ways to remind us that even the most tiny little things can end up causing a lot of pain. Take, for example, the simple papercut.

The word alone is normally enough for most folks to have a visceral reaction. Some might shudder, others cringe at the idea of running a finger along the edge of a sheet of paper. For those who have never had to go through this, congrats. Simply put, the edges of paper, while fragile, are quite sharp and, as it turns out, we tend to have to manipulate paper with our hands.

One might ask, why do papercuts hurt that much? After all, there is nothing “mild” about one. Most would see it as the main tragedy of the day. In short, it’s a case where our own bodies work against us. Papercuts, mercifully, are often very shallow. The downside is that this means the finger’s pain receptors are exposed to the air without blood to help limit the pain.

Not to mention, your fingers tend to have a lot of sensory receptors, after all, we can obtain a huge amount of information from just touch. In general, this is a good thing most days. However, when cut with a piece of paper, all those helpful little receptors are screaming at our brain that, actually, there is a major issue going on here.

I've tried all the tricks for cooking and peeling hardboiled eggs and I've come to the conclusion that no one method works every time because every egg seems to be an entity unto itself. My solution is to place the boiled egg on a wooden cutting board, chop it in half with the single stroke of a cleaver, and scoop the two halves out of the shell with a spoon.

Every egg *is* an entity unto itself, except in the very rare case of identical twin eggs.

They do that when they're very fresh eggs.. older eggs are better for boiling also add salt to the water and bring to a boil it helps

Apparently if you immediately plunge the egg into iced water that loosens things up and you can avoid this happening. It drives me nuts too.

I thought that was to stop the grey ring forming around the yolk? I've honestly not found it makes a difference to peelabiity and I do it every time. If you leave them in water and shake them it will make the shell loser and easier to peel. Otherwise, use older eggs.

Keep the eggs in the refrigerator (yes, I'm in the US) for a couple of weeks. Really fresh eggs don't peel as well. (Source: our local farmers' market egg vendor.)

Use slightly older eggs, (eggs that you've had in the fridge at least a week or more) start the water boiling first and then add the eggs in carefully with a large slotted serving spoon. The heat from the boiling water first touching the cold eggs as they are placed in the boiling water causes a reaction just under the shell of the egg where the egg slightly "shrinks" away from the inside of the shell and makes them easier to peel. I can even get the egg to "shrink" away when I cook poached and ramen eggs. You're welcome

Back in the 80's when I was a kid, I'd crack the egg with a knife, split it in two, then scoop with a spoon. That doesn't even work anymore. Egg shells are effed because of poor feed and too many chemicals.....that's my theory, but I'm not an egg farmer.

From boiling water into an ice water bath to shrink the egg from being stuck to outer shell. Then break shell all around (tap tap tap tap) then roll on counter or around in palms of hands. Best!

The only thing that has worked for me is to place the eggs in boiling water, then put them into a bowl of iced water for about 10 minutes. Ever since I started that method, I haven't had problems. Some of the eggs crack open a little in the water but I haven't had one that has been destroyed in the process.

I used to have that happen. Now that I've switched to steaming them - 1/2 to 3/4 inch of water, bring to a boil, add the eggs, cover (with heat still on) for 13 minutes, and drop in icewater. The membrane sticks to the egg, not the shell, and it slides right off.

Cut the shell in half with a Dremel, maybe? Then use a knife to cut through the egg itself.

Make sure they boil at least 15 minutes, once the water comes to a boil. Then “shock” them in really cold tap water, and shake them around in the pan. The cold water starts separating the boiled egg from the shell and that thin membrane between the shell and egg. Once they’re shaken well, you may even see some already coming out of their shells. You can then practically just slide them the rest of the way out. I’ve even had times where the shell has stayed together, but empty. Now, some may be stubborn and not cooperate, so you will have to crack them more and start picking and peeling. But once you get that membrane thing broken, the shell starts coming off more easily. I’m 63 now, and learned this about 50 years ago from a now ex-SIL who was a really good cook, though it turned out she’s a truly horrible person underneath her very practiced Suzy Homemaker facade.

Tap egg gently so that all of the shell is broken into small pieces. That stresses the membrane, a bit. Once you break that membrane, try peeling under running water. The water runs between egg and membrane and does a lot of the work for you. I have peeled eggs this way, and sometime the shell comes off all in one piece, in a spiral, even! Of course, does not work every time. Nothing does.

Put them in a glass with a bit of water, put your hand over the top of the glass and give it a good shake. Shell comes off in one piece.

There are so many methods here. I'll add ours to the mix. Cook them in a preheated steamer for a longer time than in liquid water, like 20-22 minutes. After that time gently crack the shells a bit but don't peal them all the way and then soak them in ice water. Instead of the ice water cooling I've also had pretty consistent success cooling them on a wire rack open in the freezer but that takes a lot longer to cool, like 40 minutes.

Very simple and easy way to peel an egg even if it being difficult. Take one and gently fracture on open hard surface. The gently push and roll in back and forth for a few rounds and move to get ends. It should be totally spiderwebbed with cracks. This makes a sticky protein membrane practically fall off now with the shell pieces attached and a perfectly peeled egg. There are several friction methods like that to quickly and easily open.

The water has to be boiling BEFORE you put the egg in. It works better if the egg is cold. The quick temperature shift pulls it away from the shell.

Before putting them in the water, tap the larger end gently with the back of the teaspoon until you hear a "crack" - which isn't the shell breaking but the membrane detaching. Then boil as normal, plunge into cold water and peel under a slightly running tap from the large end first. Youtube has a number of videos illustrating the technique.

That looks like it might be under or over cooked. I boiled a .ot of eggs in my lifetime. On couple of occasions I under cooked my eggs and when went to peel them, this happened. When I go to peel them after I boiled them, I usually will put my eggs in cold water for a minute to three minutes to cool down. Then just hit the egg in one spot to get it cracked. Then peel it. Most times the egg shell will peel in large pieces and come right off.

To add more insult to injury, most commercial paper is treated with chemicals such as bleach. One doesn’t have to be a medical expert to realize just how uncomfortable, say, bleach can be if it gets in a wound. At the very least, the humble papercut serves as a reminder that even the smallest things can find a way to inflict a lot of discomfort.
