Recently, school dress code controversies have been pitting people against each other, questioning whether the rules are discriminating against girls.

In one of the latest stories, Khalesei Holt, a mother of a 12-year-old, recorded a TikTok of herself arguing with a Washington middle school principal over her daughter’s clothes. The conflict immediately reignited online discussions over the role the education system should play in regulating students’ appearance.

The video has garnered 9.3 million views since going up just before the weekend. It captures the conversation that the mother of three girls (according to her TikTok bio) had with the principal of Ford Middle School in Tacoma, and the on-screen caption declares that the girl was sent home for a dress code violation “at 12 years old.”

    At the beginning of the video, the TikToker can be heard saying, “So I am done with it” and asserting that she is recording for her own protection. However, the principal says that the mother doesn’t have her permission to film and mentions attorneys.

    The 12-year-old, wearing a T-shirt and what appeared to be yoga pants, briefly enters the screen as the TikToker is saying, “But she’s still going to go to class.” At this point, it is still unclear if the outfit the student is wearing in the video is the one that got her in trouble in the first place.

    “Not right now,” the principal replies.

    “So you’re taking her education away over her dress code?” the TikToker says but doesn’t receive another response as the principal leaves the room.

    “So, the principal’s walking away at Ford Middle School yet again over the dress code,” the mother adds.

    The student handbook provides a detailed dress code:

    • Shorts and skirts are acceptable if their length is to the fingertips or longer when hands are at the student’s sides and the shorts or skirt sits at the student’s natural waist. Sweaters, cardigans, or long shirts are considered tops, not covers for the lower body. Rips, tears, or holes should not expose excessive skin or underwear above the fingertip;
    • Sleeveless shirts should not expose armholes or chest area. Spaghetti straps are not allowed;
    • Shirts need to cover a student’s midriff. No crop tops will be permitted;
    • Undergarments should not be exposed or seen. Students should not wear see-through, sheer, mesh or lace garments, clothing beneath it must comply with the dress code;
    • Pants are to be worn on the hips and not below. Sagging of pants is not permitted;
    • For safety reasons, slippers are not appropriate attire for school and are therefore not permitted;
    • Students are not permitted to wear anything that is profane, lewd, or could cause disruption or interference with school operation;
    • Clothing may not contain words or images that degrade on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation or pose a threat of imminent violence or disruption of school;
    • Students may not wear attire that has gang affiliation such as: bandanas or bandana print clothes, handmade rosaries, colored shoelaces, cloth belts that hang down, or color blocking (one color head to toe). Gang affiliated attire is constantly changing and expectations around this will be evaluated by administration as needed;
    • Writing on clothing and bodies will not be permitted;
    • Students are not permitted to wear articles of clothing or jewelry that advertise alcohol, tobacco products, illegal drugs or promote violence. (Franklin Pierce Schools Policy No. 3224 and Procedure 3224P);
    • Spikes, chains, grilles (for teeth) and studs are also not permitted on campus;
    • Students are not allowed to wear hats with bills on campus. Hoods or knit hats are allowed outside on school grounds only in cold, wet weather;
    • Students may not have hoods up inside of a building 11;
    • Religious or cultural head coverings are permitted;
    • In accordance to CDC guidelines and state suggestions, there could be a requirement to wear a mask. The mask should be appropriate and not have any inappropriate images or wording on it. If the student arrives with an inappropriate mask, a temporary mask will be provided.

    The student handbook says that Ford Middle School “is a place of work and learning”

    The school says it applies “progressive discipline” for dress code violations:

    • Student changes/covers clothes and calls home;
    • Student changes/covers clothes, calls home, and takes home policy for parent signature;
    • Student changes clothes, conference call with parent /students;
    • Student changes clothes, parent conference with admin;
    • After school learning.

    Another follow-up video shows police on the scene but there is not much context

    I thought that is what she should have been sent home for. The crop top is just her trying to push boundaries, Garbage bag ( to wear as a cover up shirt) and detention for it.

    My mother works at a school which has a dress code. Most of it is for health and safety (no slippers/flip flops, nothing so oversized that it hampers movement or catches on equipment and so on) but female students are not allowed to wear X,Y and Z whereas the male students can. I tried to raise the issue of gender equality with her and she just shut me down. "Girls shouldn't wear revealing clothing in case a man looks at them". We're talking 5-11 year olds. If an ADULT finds a CHILD's body distracting or whatever then we need to look at the ADULT as well. If you're disturbed by shoulders, legs, midriffs, etc on literal children MAYBE DON'T BE IN A JOB AROUND CHILDREN.

    EXACTLY - Really a shame how these sorts of ridiculous dress codes systems makes it easier to not only perpetuate sexism, but also for pedophilia to exist. Who in their right minds would be that concerned with the shoulders of a KID? Not even a teenager, but literal kiddos. Makes me shudder.

    I'm probably too European to understand what's going on. How can a teacher get offended and decide to deny a girl her education just based on a shirt that she's wearing? What perversity in their mind got triggered that they are sexually aroused by a 12 year old girls belly button? As I said, I'm probably too European to understand this insanity.

    Same here. Here no one cares what kids wear in school, unless someone shows up in their underwear or something. Kids are there to learn, how they dress is irrelevant. And if an adult makes a fuss about a girl's clothing being "distracting" they are the one who will get in trouble for creeping on a child. US dress codes are bonkers.

    I don't get your dress codes. Couldn't you just focus on educating the pupils instead of judging every fiber they wear... My step daughter left for school this morning in mom-jeans with ripped knees and crop top. And no one gives a f*ck.

    You would be excluded from school here in the UK for having coloured hair like the girl has! It's hard to enforce a dress code when there is no uniform, which is why school uniforms are a good idea. You don't need permission to film any public interaction.

    When I was in highschool one of my classmates got sent home after he dyed a part of his hair blue and pink. He was suspended for several weeks when he refused to bleach it all. Ridiculous. I thought it was absurd a little over 20 years ago. I think it's even more ridiculous now

    I don't know the teenage boys of this era, but the harrasment of pretty girls in middle school by boys was rampant in my time. Developed breast early? S**t. Bra is visible through blouse? S**t. Dressing modestly was kind of a way to avoiid this. Reading accounts on the Internet, today's boys are no different.

    I agree. No belly buttons and no butt cheeks. Adults follow these same rules at work. Also we've all been to highschool and it was insane! People wore club clothes, pumps, and pulled their thongs up and out of their pants.

    Her mask is not even covering her nose, that's a worse violation IMO. Dress codes aren't all about misogyny and pedophilia either, however, I do agree in this case it's bullshit. That said the dress code clearly states "Shirts need to cover a student’s midriff. No crop tops will be permitted" her top is too short. She is in violation. if you don't like the dress code, okay fine, go about getting it changed, but you don't get to just ignore it because you don't like it.

    If a principal can threaten to bring in LAWYERS just to implement some stupid dress code on a poor girl, then more and more schools can impose a super strict rule on masks and social distancing during physical classes. End of.

    "If a principal can threaten to bring in LAWYERS" That's not what happened. The mother was recording and the principal said that her attorney would advise her to inform the mother she doesn't have permission to record her. THAT's why the principal walked out, she didn't want to be recorded.

    The dress code is quite specific, and the student is in violation. Mom is just trying to get some likes on TikTok and other social media, but, you know who should be held responsible? Mom. She allowed her daughter, who is a minor, to go to school wearing clothes that violate the code (which, for one thing, teaches kids adult responsibility), so, stick mom in detention.

    Louloubelle, is jumping to unjustified conclusions a hobby of yours, or can you just not help yourself? Here we have a case of clearly stated rules, a kid who knowingly and deliberately broke those rules and an entitled mother who apparently thinks the kid should get away with it. That's what this is about, not the specific outfit the kid was wearing. Nobody's commenting on children's clothing beyond what's essential to the narrative, and there are no "creepy misogynists" here outside of your fevered imagination.

    All this fuss about very little. Just go home and come back in a longer shirt, or wear a t-shirt you have for gym class. Maybe the school should have a supply of baggy t-shirts for crop-top emergencies. And do up your pants, and pull your mask up while you're at it

    You bring up a good point. It really is no big deal to wear a longer shirt and follow the rules. I mean you can get a tidy t-shirt from k-mart for a few dollars, right? Students who choose not to are deliberately being defiant.

    Beyond the question of sexualization, I would stick to the following formula: "correct dress required". That is, an outfit in which you are not going to work, whether you are a man or a woman, period. An outfit that doesn't give you a scruffy, badly styled or neglected look, so no belly, no dizzying necklines, no thighs, no outfits with holes, stains, no outfit with questionable slogans, etc. As well for man / boy as for woman / girl! It is a mark of respect both for others but also for oneself in a school and / or professional context.

    I’m just a couple of years shy of 40 and live in the US. We dress codes going all the way back to middle school, in which I had to tuck in my shirt. To me, it’s really quite simple. Abide by the dress code and stop complaining. It’s there for a reason. This mom and daughter violated the dress code and violated it anyway.

    the shirt showing her midsection is the only thing i see against their rules. If she just wore an appropriate shirt everthing would have been fine. Also both the student AND the parent(s) should have already been aware of this rule and not allowed her to wear the shirt to school in the first place.

    Washington state is indeed a multi-party consent state for recording - unless every single person being recorded consents, it falls under the criminal wiretapping law. Most states adopt the more reasonable one-party consent, which is where if you are part of a conversation you can record or if any one person in a conversation agrees you can record. Multi-party consent might seem good at first glance to some people, but it is used to cover up a lot of public corruption and official misconduct because people doing things they know are wrong will never consent to having evidence of their wrongdoing collected.

    To all the commenters saying 'stop sexualizing girls', is there a limit to this? Would you argue that it's acceptable to be completely nude in public? Just as you are arguing for this girl's comfortable clothing (low neckline, open midriff), naturalists would argue that complete nudity is not inherently sexual. Reasonable argument, as there's the entire rest of the animal kingdom as evidence - but are you willing to take this to the fight against embedded standards throughout society? Dress etiquette has become more and more forgiving over the years, but this school (and countless others) has drawn the lines at things like midriff, sleeve length, neckline etc. So does one mother get to ignore those rules because she doesn't agree with them? Would you feel the same way if it was a naturalist mother and her nude child in school?

    It’s in the code. No midriffs. You’re not above the rules and sounds like this mom has thought she is plenty. She’s created a whole scene and before she even knows the outcome it seems. If mom hadn’t pitched a nasty fit again maybe they’d accept here’s a shirt let’s get her back to class. It doesn’t sound like this is the first attack on the rules. And parent doesn’t automatically have right to record particularly if district isn’t also recording for legal protection. Secretary had right To seek assistance. Work in school system.

    If this were an AITA thread, I'd say ESH. The school made way to big a deal out of it and there was a simple solution that they rejected. The mom overreacted big time and is not setting a good example as a parent. Not every conflict or disagreement has to be the hill you choose to die on, for either party. I feel bad for the girl because she has to have that woman for a mom and go to that school. Wouldn't make good internet if we didn't turn it into an episode of Jerry Springer though.

    When I was in high school the principal kept padlocks because sagging was popular at the time. He would wrench those boys pants up and loop 2 belt loops together with a padlock and lock it until school was over. I don’t see how this was legal, but we used to laugh at the time because it only took about 2 weeks before you were teased for getting locked. The only good thing? He really didn’t care about girls clothes the way we had them policed in middle school. High school was actually concerned about the guys. Middle? I got sent home for crop tops, tank tops, and shorts.

    I really enjoy these freedom fighters. Making a stand with the least effort possible. Dont like dress codes? Run for school board. Or vote for idiots who agree with you. Although on this front I think you're unlikely to be happy with someone on a school board that is OK with 12 year olds in half shirts at school.

    Hey, I'm in my 40s and also not allowed to wear shirts that show my midriff or sweatpants to the office. If the school is applying this dress code uniformly across body types and genders, then mom needs to STFU and pay attention to what her daughter wears out the door in the morning. If they're unfairly targeting her child, or only tall girls or whatever, then she needs to address that specifically. As for the relevance of dress codes in schools, there is quite a but of research showing that kids do better academically in schools when there is a dress code in place that minimizes differences in socioeconomic status.

    Have a school uniform. All these issues go away. At 12yrs old I was moved from a local public/state school with no uniform to a private school with a uniform. Immediately I noticed that when wearing a uniform the kids behave better, even when leaving school at the end of the day they were well behaved because the public would recognize the uniform, report bad behavior to the school, and we'd all be dragged into an assembly where we got a lecture. To skip dealing with the lecture we all behaved while in uniform, whether at school or outside it. Another thing I noticed is kids were no longer arguing/bullying/feeling social peer pressure to show up to school with the "newest Nike's" or whatever new top fashion item was socially required.

    First, am I the only one appalled that these people don't understand the difference between "principle" and "principal". C'mon people! Remember - "the principal is your PAL" that's how you remember. Sheesh. Now, some one made the comment that dress codes had been around for years. Yes they have. But they weren't always that restrictive. I remember wearing spaghetti straps in junior high. As well as a halter top that had absolutely no back. This was 1974. So, don't tell me things haven't gotten worse. Honestly, what rot. The boys I went to school with had no trouble learning while I was wearing my halter. And let's be honest. Dress codes are really only for the girls, aren't they?

    I do not agree with the strictness and absurdity of many school dresscodes at all and the sexualisation of (pre)teens is absolutely bonkers, but.... The school is a business and as such they kinda sorta do have the right to set certain rules, just like most work offices would let you go if you show up in something that shows your stomach. If you want to go to their classes you will have to stick to their rules, ridiculous or not. Instead of throwing a tantrum your time and energy would be better spent getting together with like minded people and making them change the archaic rules they have

But at the same time, keeping in mind she's TWELVE, not sixteen... in a day & age where breasts are still sexualized, who makes a shirt for children that has such a low neckline?? I'm not some sort of angry Puritan, but I feel like twelve is a bit young to be wearing shirts like that, only because a twelve year old's mind is still very very young & probably doesn't even realize the potential sexual nature of the shirt that others would pick up on, even if it's the fault of other's. It would put her in an uncomfortable situation she's way too young & unequipped to deal with. Which, again, wouldn't be her fault at all, but it would be better to avoid that. Her mother has TikTok ao clearly she doesn't live under a rock; she should know how harsh dress codes are & that people will generally have a problem when a twelve year old wears clothes more appropriate for a much older teen. Why would she let her daughter wear the shirt? She let her daughter get into a stressful situation for no reason. It sucks not being able to wear what you want, but that's part of life & she should've gently told her daughter she can wear the shirt at home, not at school, & stopped the entire scene from unfolding. Again, I'm placing no blame on the daughter, but society & those caring for her have failed her here. Also, tell her to put her damn mask on properly!

    Yes she did. Please stop with this sexualizing kids. Just send your children to school dressed for school, not dressed causally like for beach, gym, or any other recreational activity. School, or work any place, has the right set the rules. BP stop promoting this nonsense. These parents are sabotaging their children's future, don't give them a platform to do so.

    If you think modern school dress codes are ridiculous, you should have seen what we had to deal with when I was in school. Dress pants for boys (no jeans allowed) and dresses or skirts for girls (which couldn't be shorter than two inches above the knee). No t-shirts, and shirts had to be tucked in unless designed to be worn out. "Street shoes" only (which had to be brown or black), no athletic shoes outside of gym class. Boys' hair wasn't allowed to touch ears or shirt collars. And that's just the beginning. Most of our closet space was taken up by clothes we never wore and would never want to wear outside of school. We didn't like it much, but those were the rules, and in those days our parents weren't likely to be sympathetic toward any attempts to defy authority. So sorry, Karen, but no sympathy from me. Whether you agree with them or not, rules are rules and your brat isn't exempt. The sooner she learns that, the better off she'll be.

    I would like to see school like work environment. So no top tank, no shorts, no sweat pants. For both boys and girls. With your clothes you show your attitude to the place. If you wear something mentioned above, you are showing no respect.

    RULES are a form of education too. And I agree that the school was in the right for sending the child home, because that also teaches a lesson. If we don't enforce the rules, then they have no value. It's not always about sexualization.

    So to teach her she's there to learn, you would deny her an education by sending her home? And for everyone saying you can't do this later in life, have you seen how people dress on a college campus? If you can get a law degree or doctorate in what's essentially pajamas why do we have these silly standards for kids?

    This reminds me of the time when a girl and boy wore the same exact outfit to school... but only the girl got in trouble for it :/ we should start teaching kids not to judge others for what they wear. There's safety concerns and then there's sexualizing CHILDREN.

    I'm really tired of seeing people wearing their masks so they don't cover their nose. Only the most obtuse should still need training on how to wear a mask. So, to the girl in question: her mask is not properly worn, her t-shirt is at least one size too small, and I shouldn't be able to see her belly button. Can't tell if it's just the too small shirt or the low-on-the-hips pants.

    at my school we are literally allowed to wear crop tops and stuff, within reason (one girl got dress coded for wearing super short shorts, she had an extreme wedgie and her whole butt was showing, ON PURPOSE) the only dress code is no drugs/alcohol on shirts, and i would assume very graphic shirts are wrong too.

    Many schools just keep long t-shirts around. The kid has to wear the shirt for the day and then return it at the end of the day. I think what I would hope would be that if I male student is wearing a short t-shirt, he would be dealt with in the same way. The girl's outfit didn't look too bad - it looked like she could just pull her t-shirt down and be in compliance.

    Dress code should apply equally to all, boys as girls as staff, and lets see how long the staff will tolerate it or having their wage docked over something, or the discrimination... One rule for all, or you come in civil clothes as you wish.

    My daughter's K-8 school tried to impose the rule for the shorts being longer than the end of the fingertips, but did this in a year when August had brutally hot weather. So all parents revolted, saying that pre-teen and teen shorts are only made short or very long and they are not sending their kids to school in long cargo shorts when it is 95F outside. School backtracked and allowed short shorts. Still no spaghetti straps, though.

    So a t shirt and sweat pants. And mask under nose. So what was the violation? Was the shirt riding up because it was too short or a size smaller than it should have been? We're the sweats sliding down to expose a crack or belly button? Deff the mask not being worn correctly in my opinion. Wear it correctly. Not to protect others if you are healthy but to protect you from someone that might have it an might not know. Or just stay home an work online. Options.

    I can't believe that anyone would think that the mother should just roll over and comply with these unreasonable rules and scholl authorities. This is the attitude that too many Americans take today. I learned that people will walk all over others as long as they are allowed to get away with it.

    well, according to the school's own rules, there wasn't a problem, unless it was causing problems within the classroom. I would be interested to hear what problems the school thought it was causing.....also in the rules themselves, it never says 'student is sent home,' most of them emphasize on the student changing. since the mom brought her a new shirt, and they didn't allow her to change and be forgiven, i feel as though a formal complaint should probably be made, but try the school district president before the police, probably

    In school I saw a lot of kids get sent home or forced to change because of dress code violations. Usually more severe then this though. My sister got sent home because she wore leggings with holes from her hip to her ankles. Another girl for a tube top, a boy for wearing girls booty shorts (he wasn't wearing any underwear either and his d**k was hanging out), a teacher gave a big t shirt to another boy because he was wearing a sheer beach shirt (he might as well have been wearing nothing up top), a teacher and I both got in trouble one day because we both were wearing semi sheer over shirts over thin strapped tank tops. They let us slide on the violation because it was only "technically" breaking code and just told us to be more careful.

    If the dress code applies to all students equally (again I say ALL STUDENTS EQUALLY, boys and girls!), I see no problem with the schools activity (especially in light of the fact that, according to this article, we have no idea what the student was wearing). There's more to the story than this half baked article is presenting, so far as I can tell. Did her clothing violate the dress code? Was the dress code discriminatory against the girls but not the boys? Why did the principle call the police (I'm assuming he did)? Did the Mom get (or act) violent?

    Teacher chiming in: Most dress codes are about being professional and non-distracting. Most parents don’t have the funds to dress their children professionally. If a school is truly after professionalism, uniforms need to be employed. Now, the bigger issue… Is her outfit distracting? No. There’s not a kid out there (at her age, in her classes) that would be gawking at her during class. This is what kids wear nowadays. And for those of you thinking her shirt is too low cut… it’s the midriff. I guarantee that’s what the violation is. Personally, I would have ignored this.

    We weren't allowed to wear midriff tops in the '90s. Sweatpants/track pants were banned as well. Male or female would have been required to get a change of clothes or go to in school suspension.

    So, what happened here is the mom got called about the rule being broken and threw a fit. After throwing the fit she said i have a shirt is it fine now and by this time the school staff was pissed of so said no you can just go home and come back later. If you dont like the rule petition to have it change dont throw a fit when you get called out for breaking it just sets a bad example.

    Um, I think the school is right on their part. I don't think 12-YEAR-OLDS should be wearing crop-tops and short shorts to school! As a woman, I am basing my opinion on the increased rates of child rapes and sexual abuse, and kids like this thinking it is okay to dress like a stripper at twelve.

    No, tolerating sexualization of children is what increases the risk of child rape. And there was nothing sexual about this girl's clothes in any universe. She is basically in pajamas- a pair of baggy pants and a t-shirt with about 1 inch of skin. In the sixties and seventies mini skirts and no bra were comment. In the 80s crop tops and right exercise gear was common. And in the 90s babydoll shirts and short skirts where everywhere. In my town 2 years ago we had a girl banned from the yearbook for baring her shoulders. She posted a picture of her mother in the same highschools yearbook about 30 years ago wearing an almost identical boat beck shirt. Dress codes are arbitrary. They are almost always enforced more heavily against women. And, for some reason often seem to be stricter now than they were decades ago.

    when it comes to dress codes i get it some of the clothes they make for teens these days r inappropriate for school but most of the time kids kno wat they can and cant wear. wenever i see these it makes me mad bc what the school is supposed to do is send them home to change then come back. they arent supposed to just ruin a whole days worth of education for the student. i was sent home once bc i didnt kno my school didnt allow ripped jeans and mine werent bought ripped they were just old. they told me to b back by my next class and i did just that. that was in 2004 now i feel like dress codes r over the top. in my friends younger sisters school they arent allowed to wear anything that promotes bands, tv shows, movie, cartoons or anime. one kid thought hed b fine wore a tshirt with mozart on it. ud think that would b ok right a classic musical icon from musical history its educational and the kids truly liked mozart. wrong not even mozart was allowed to b shown on a tshirt. one kid wore a hoodie that had a picture of him and the school took it as him mocking the schools dress code. my friends sister got it the worst tho she wore a skirt that went down to her feet and a long sleeve not revealing at all shirt and was told to go home. they said skirts werent allowed. even after explaining she couldnt wear pant bc of stiches she has on her leg and knowing she cant wear shorts and how this was her only option they said show us the stitches or go home. she said she would show the nurse bc she was uncomfortable showing men where the stitches were. they agreed the nurse confirmed she had stitches in a few spots. the final verdict "stay home until they heal and u can wear something other then a skirt" she missed 2 weeks of school bc those idiots wouldnt allow a skirt that went down to her feet.

    Honestly, she is violating the dress code. You don`t like the code- go to a different school. I enrolled a med school for the purpose of changing my profession and this kind of dress code is printed and put right next to the door. I have seen several times teachers and the principal himself sending pupils home for breaking dress code, yes boys including. And they do not make it about sexualizing children (14-18) but they insist it is because they are future medical professionals and it is their duty to be an example for others in many ways (dressing included )

    I read a story a few years ago about a case of political correctness gone mad when a little boy was sent home for asking another little boy how he got his black eye. The teacher said "we do not call them black eyes, we call them bruised eyes", and sent the boy home for being racist because he called the bruised eye a black eye. In a daft twist, the boy who was sent home was black (Jamaican) and the boy with the black eye was white, as was the teachers.

    To be clear, I don't think the girl should be punished at all.

    I'm really tired of seeing people wearing their masks so they don't cover their nose. Only the most obtuse should still need training on how to wear a mask. So, to the girl in question: her mask is not properly worn, her t-shirt is at least one size too small, and I shouldn't be able to see her belly button. Can't tell if it's just the too small shirt or the low-on-the-hips pants.

Options.

    well, according to the school's own rules, there wasn't a problem, unless it was causing problems within the classroom.

    If this ever happens to my kid I am showing up in full on Satanist clothing. I am so sick and tired of "Christian" ideology infecting every part of our lives. Let the children express themselves!! I mean according to these rules they are better off wearing a potato sack to school.

    Every dress code story is really a story of a grown man projecting his own lust onto a minor and blaming her for it.

    No. Many dress codes are made by women. It is about having standards and about safety. Would you like to go to a school where students were walking around in bathrobes and slippers?
