Turns out, sometimes our resistance to learn something new and master a new skill can lead to something pretty amazing. Pat Hines, who couldn’t be bothered to learn Photoshop and illustrated his ebook using good old Microsoft Paint, is the proof. “I suck at Photoshop and other programs, and have worked exclusively in Microsoft Paint for over ten years… I honed my craft working long overnights at a hospital reception desk…,” the guy writes. That’s why when it came to choosing the program to create illustrations for his novel Camp Redblood And The Essential Revenge, he looked no further and just went for something he was already good at.

If you still have doubts about Hines using some other program, he suggests you to either download the pictures, and zoom in for a closer look, or go to his Deviantart page where he documents how he makes similar art in step-by-step pics.

The guy says that his self-published e-book is about a summer camp set in the 1980’s. Of course, it’s not just any ordinary camp – it’s surrounded by ghosts and monsters and “filled with goofy campers and counselors, where the teenagers are always trying to get drunk or laid…”.

There's an old saying, "tools do not make the tradesman". I'm a woodworker and always chuckle at the people who obsess over spending insane amounts of money on 'ego brand' woodworking tools, yet are fundamentally poor woodworkers and can't execute much with them. Here's a guy who took the most humble graphics program there is (pretty much) and made what looks to be an absolute creative masterpiece. Bravo. Just, bravo.

Learning Photoshop could have taken just a couple months, and it actually has the tools to re-create work that looks just like MS paint (aka, pixels) but with significantly less headache xD I mean, go this guy, but at the same time, it's like a person being too stubborn to learn to use a paint brush, so they paint with toothpicks. While you CAN certainly do it, it's kind of a waste of time. Tbh, learn the better program, and produce 10x the work, so you can show off your story and hard work faster. A master can paint murals in the sand, but if they're out to share their idea, they should use the best tools they have.

If I read the PB descriptions correctly, he learned to doodle using the SW that was readily available to him while he was at work, presumably using a work computer, which was mspaint. This explains why he never bothered to switch to photoshop because that SW wasn't necessarily available to him during his work hours. (I guess a person can get bored working the night shift desk job.) Regardless, this is certainly an accomplishment. The art quality reminds me of "King of the Hill".

Truly amazing! Decades ago I found out the many hidden powers and secrets of Paint to get many everyday tasks done because Photoshop brought my "Blazingly Fast" to its knees every time I loaded it. I still use paint for many simpler tasks because it's faster than Photoshop for some things.

Great patients, but if youre not good with programs, then use your hand and a pen instead, using ms paint is a bad choice of tools , the work is pretty average, specially for 10yrs of work and development. Its like, if i use 10yrs to learn to draw with a pen from my a*****e, and manage to make average work with it, it still is a stupid thing.

I think we women drew, wrote, and published much better "Wimmen's Comix"during the 70's,in San Francisco,CA, and a lot of us were better cartoonists and writers than this guy;and ours were a lot FUNNIER MOSTLY.All Women,We HAD our own women's lib.--And we practiced it in our comic books--now most of the copies are owned by collectors. This "Robot Chicken" and Family Guy,and South Park,Rick & Morty, on cable now,we finally allowed to do wild and funny cartooning--I guess South Park hit the right era,and went for the money--T.V.--not comic books.sigh.OH YEAH, I FORGOT,these shows were all created by MEN--SO NATURALLY they are taken seriously--$$$$$

Awesome! I thought I was the only one who's getting crazy with Microsoft Paint. I am a Microsoft Paint caricaturist, you can check my gallery on instagram @anakpaint.design. Hope one day I can calloborate with this great painter! :)

That hospital must have been in a small town! When i worked hospital reception, I barely got a chance to take a restroom break! Maybe the artist was a supervisor, that would explain the free time, lol.

With this amazing work, Photoshop would be much easier for him to edit the images with layers and move things around to his liking. Beautiful work!

How on earth do you even manage to create the detail in pictures such as this in MS Paint...? Incredibly impressive!

That Donald Trump's drawing looked so much like him ... But I guess it's easier to draw people who have nothing inside them ...

I like the style and the limited tools used to achieve it makes it really impressive.

Truly amazing! Decades ago I found out the many hidden powers and secrets of Paint to get many everyday tasks done because Photoshop brought my "Blazingly Fast" to its knees every time I loaded it. I still use paint for many simpler tasks because it's faster than Photoshop for some things.

Wish I had skills like this, even if it is just Microsoft Paint. This is quite impressive. The detail is just so perfect. I'll definitely have a look at the published book, as I'm curious to know what it's like. Who knows, I might even use some of my birthday money to get it (if I like it well enough)... 💕✨🎨✨💕

I used to do microsoft paint drawings in my lunch break when I worked in a callcentre. I did a whole series of star wars characters working in callcentres answering horrible customers and losing their will to live. Wish I'd saved them.

if you download the image you can resize this many times over in photoshop without losing sharpness (choose preserve hard edges)so you can print a mural

Wow, seriously? You can?? Gradients, even! Stunning!! Incredible attention to detail. This must've taken a zillion hours to create.

Great patients, but if youre not good with programs, then use your hand and a pen instead, using ms paint is a bad choice of tools , the work is pretty average, specially for 10yrs of work and development. Its like, if i use 10yrs to learn to draw with a pen from my a*****e, and manage to make average work with it, it still is a stupid thing.

guys.... this is indeed impressive BUT at the same time... this should not be encouraged =) wasting 10 years on mspaint due to stubbornness ? take 4 months to learn photoshop and get x10 results since you're clearly talented. it's like going to war with sticks and stones just coz you dont want that new "gun" technology. or riding a camel to work instead of that voodoo magic on wheels we call a car. you get my point

So I assume he spent the last 10 years using the zoom button in mspaint to make something look remotely nice.

He has paint skills and persistence. But no drawing skills. The foreshortening is so bad, so bad.

Are you nuts? Exactly, submit your MS Paint art...or any art for that matter for inspection.
