Since Mental Health Awareness Month is drawing to a close, Bored Panda thought it would be a good idea to put together something we all could take away from it and adapt to our everyday lives.

For that, we turned to the subreddit r/CoolGuides. Its 2.5 million members share plenty of useful charts on everything from understanding the complexity of our emotions to noticing if someone else is going through a rough patch. So continue scrolling to check out what pictures we ended up with.

Even if it prevents just one meltdown or provides only one extra smile, isn't it still worth it?

    halfs2010 Report

Mental health is an important part of our overall health and well-being. It touches on our emotional, psychological, and social status and affects how we think, feel, and act.

Our mental health also plays a central role in determining how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. It is important at every step of our lives, from childhood and adolescence all the way through adulthood.

But according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the burden of mental disorders continues to grow with significant impacts on health and major social, human rights, and economic consequences in all countries of the world.

That's one of my main goals at work: teach the little one that it's okay to show your feelings, it's okay to cry. Yes, boys are allowed to cry, too! We've been teaching kids -especially little boys- to bottle up their feelings for too long! It's why my Dad can never say "I'm sorry" or "I love you".

Trying to always remember all of this is really hard. I’m a nanny. Some of these I would never, ever say, like telling a kid to stop crying, but commenting on there being a mess or asking them if they need help? I do that all the time. Being expected to say the absolute perfect thing all the time is really tough and results in a lot of guilt for me. Edit: Also it’s not a great idea to offer a choice when there isn’t really a choice, so something like “let’s take a break” can be better than asking if they want to. I have trouble remembering that too sometimes.

Honestly, I think I would rather be asked if I need help rather than "I'm here if you need help." Because as a child, I had parents that just didn't care and wouldn't offer help when I clearly needed it--but then when I had a meltdown, they'd be all, "Why didn't you ask for help??", putting all the pressure on me instead of them. So I feel like, if I clearly needed help and they just said something I could interpret as "I'mma be over here," I would've been upset. I think it depends on the circumstances! I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with asking a kid if they need help, as long as, if they say "no," you back off and let them know you'll be there if they do.

My granddaughter (F15) plays the keyboard beautifully. I get migraines -every-time-I hear high tones. I must have told her a zillion times she is the best (BEST) player (I mean it), but those damn tones get me every time! It is NOT her playing; it's how my ear interprets/my nervous system stores the sound. Thank God she gets it.

Determinants of mental health and mental disorders include not only individual attributes such as the ability to manage one's thoughts, emotions, behaviors and interactions with others, but also social, cultural, economic, political and environmental factors, for example, national policies, social protection, standards of living, working conditions, and community support.

Stress, genetics, nutrition, perinatal infections and exposure to environmental hazards are also contributing factors to mental disorders.

One of the most common mental disorders and key causes of disability worldwide is depression. An estimated 264 million people are affected by it globally and more women suffer from it than men.

Depression is characterized by sadness, loss of interest and pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, tiredness, and poor concentration. People with this condition may also have multiple physical complaints with no apparent physical cause. Depression can be long-lasting or recurrent, substantially impairing one's ability to function at work or school and to cope with everyday life. At its most severe, depression can lead to suicide.

A 6th grader who was great for me but had a lot of negative behaviors with other adults once told me that I was the only teacher he ever had who said 'please' and 'thank you' when I asked him to do something and said 'sorry' when I was wrong. I think about that a lot when it comes to kids.

The good thing is that prevention programs have been shown to reduce depression, both for children and adults.

There are also effective treatments. Mild to moderate depression can be effectively combated with talking therapies, such as cognitive behavior therapy or psychotherapy. Antidepressants can also be an effective form of treatment for moderate to severe depression but are usually not the first option for mild cases. They are not recommended for treating depression in children and are not the main choice of treatment in adolescents, among whom they should be used with caution.

Management of depression should include psychosocial aspects, including identifying stress factors, such as financial problems, difficulties at work or physical or mental abuse, and sources of support, such as family members and friends. The maintenance or reactivation of social networks and social activities is important.

Is it ok to decline an invitation without a reason? My mom and even random people I don't know that much always ask me more... "come, this day this hour!" "Well... it sounds good, but I won't be able to make it, sorry." "Why not?" "Well... I have a dentist appointment, it is set about three months in advance and I really need this procedure to be done..." "can't you just postpone it?" "Well... I could but it won't be possible to have it done in next few months and I will be in a lot of pain. I don't want to. It was hard to get this date..." "ok, so just change it, I will meet you there..." "No, wait! I said no!" "OK, thank you, see you there. "

Bipolar disorder affects about 45 million people worldwide. It typically consists of both manic and depressive episodes separated by periods of normal mood. Manic episodes involve elevated or irritable mood, over-activity, rapid speech, inflated self-esteem and a decreased need for sleep. (People who have manic attacks but do not experience depressive episodes are also classified as having bipolar disorder.)

Effective treatments are available for the treatment of the acute phase of bipolar disorder and the prevention of relapse. These are medicines that stabilize mood. Psychosocial support is an important component of treatment.

The makers of this chart missed a huge hidden cause of anger: shame. Brené Brown has devoted her entire career to exploring shame; how insidious it is, how all-encompassing it can be, and how incredibly destructive it is. Learning how to recognize and identify shame can be a remarkably freeing process. Reading Brown's book, "Daring Greatly" is an excellent first step. (It's also worth checking out Brown's TED talk on this subject.)

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects around 20 million people worldwide. Psychoses, including schizophrenia, are characterized by distortions in thinking, perception, emotions, language, sense of self and behavior. Common psychotic experiences include hallucinations (hearing, seeing or feeling things that are not there), and delusions (fixed false beliefs or suspicions that are firmly held even when there is evidence to the contrary).

This disorder can make it extremely difficult for people to work or study normally.

Not to mention the stigma and discrimination surrounding it that can result in a lack of access to health and social services. Furthermore, people with psychosis are at high risk of exposure to human rights violations, such as long-term confinement in institutions.

One thing I notice I do is scroll through the comments on a news post just to look for certain comments I disagree with with the sole intention to "set someone straight". Recently I've been trying to revert back to when commenting on every post wasn't a thing and how me clapping back at someone I don't agree with won't change their mind, nor will it make me feel any better putting in my 2 cents.

Schizophrenia usually begins in late adolescence or early adulthood. Treatment with medicines and psychosocial support is effective; with appropriate treatment and social support, people can lead a productive life and be part of society. Facilitation of assisted living supported housing and supported employment can act as a base from which people with severe mental disorders, including schizophrenia, can achieve numerous recovery goals as they often face difficulty in obtaining or retaining a place to live and normal employment.

Another big problem is dementia. Approximately 50 million people have it. Dementia is usually of a chronic or progressive nature in which there is deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. the ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from normal aging. It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgment. The impairment in cognitive function is commonly accompanied and occasionally preceded, by deterioration in emotional control, social behavior, or motivation.

A variety of diseases and injuries, such as Alzheimer's or a stroke, can affect the brain and can cause dementia. The really sad part is that currently there is no treatment for it.

All great points! Another: Stop being a perfectionist - perfect is the enemy of good. Hmmmmmm - is it me, or does the figure for "Look at your past..." resemble Darth Vader? Well, he did turn to good in the end.

The WHO reports that most health systems still haven't adequately responded to the burden of mental disorders. As a consequence, the gap between the need for treatment and its provision is wide all over the world. In low- and middle-income countries, between 76% and 85% of people with mental disorders receive no treatment for it.

A further compounding problem is the poor quality of care for those who do receive treatment.

But in addition to healthcare services, people with mental illness also require social support. So learning about these things (even if they don't affect you personally and even if it's just scrolling through charts from Reddit), can be really helpful.
