Wow. "Lacked hatred and anger" - this is just speculation, but perhaps he comes from a dysfunctional/ toxic environment. It is only then when you truly appreciate safety and lack of hatred/ anger.

I remember when I came out to people at a job I had in the early 90s. One of the guys asked the same question, and he was indeed hot, and I told him so. He was walking around like he was 10 feet tall after that!

I had a friend, 3.5 decades ago, tell me that if he was into girls, I'd be in the top 5 of his list of girls he was attracted to. I still think that was a compliment.

I had the opposite. I dated a guy who was a chemist with a PhD. I remember him saying on his first day at a new job that he made sure to tell all the people who didn't have a PhD that he didn't think any less of them. He was a piece of work sometimes, but mostly he was fun. Anyway, on our first date, I told him I was a software developer. That's like saying you're a lawyer. Actually, it's even a much bigger variety. I never said what type of software or what my company did. He just interrupted to talk about work he'd done with high powered computers. Fine. I don't much like talking about my job. We never once, NEVER ONCE, had an intellectual conversation. I think he thought I wasn't very bright, based on many little things. I remember saying if I'd known they pay you to get your PhD, I maybe would have considered it. He said, "Well, it's not like just anyone can do it." I think he'd have been surprised to know that I was a National Merit Finalist (without a lick of studying).

The real question is.. how on earth do people achieve to make someone feel great about being with them? No one ever liked me being around them, no matter what I do or not. It seem my very mere existence bothers people.. I don't understand how to achieve to be tolerated by someone

My relationship with my now husband started online and when we met for the first time in real, he also blurted something similar. It was a relief more than anything because I feared not being attractive to him in real.

I had one like this the other day. Younger Co-worker asked me how old I am. I asked how old she thought I was. “About 37 or 38” she said (I’m 56 😎)

Funny thing is, people my age will think I'm much younger than I am. But anyone more than 10 years younger can always tell. I think it's the speech, the hair, many little subtle signs.

Worked in an office with a woman for 24 years. She guessed my age to be 35. I was not young when I started there.

One dude told me this. It was hard to believe but I smiled and thanked him only for him to say a couple days later while talking on the phone with a coworker that I was very conflictive.

My team of devs is with 25 - 30 year olds. They thought I am in my 40s. I turn 58 later this year. Of course, inside, I am their age, too.

I bet the attendant has been living off that too!

Isn't it awesome when straight men feel flattered by compliments from gay men instead of turning into quivering knots of discomfort, suspicion, hate, contempt, nervousness and/or disgust? Unfortunately, I've seen the latter happen more than once, and it's about time it becomes a thing of the past.
