The stereotype that only women like to hear compliments is still alive and well today. Research shows that women receive more compliments than men in general. When people compliment women, it's most often about their looks and appearance. Men, in turn, receive compliments about their skills, competence, and abilities.
While compliments might make some people cringe (especially when they're not appropriate), they generally make us feel good. Apparently, receiving a compliment lights up the same part of our brain as when we get a monetary reward.
Naturally, guys would like to get that feeling too, right? To show that they like receiving compliments just as much as women, one netizen asked guys online: "Men of Reddit, what was the last compliment you got? When was it?" This gave lots of guys the opportunity to boast about the times they were flattered and maybe even blushed a little when receiving a particularly nice compliment.

I had a phone call with my younger sister the other day and I suppose her boyfriend was there and he overheard the convo.
He said that I have a safe voice that lacked hatred and anger. I have never heard that before and now that makes me want to become a person that radiates that in all my ways.
Kind of a cop out, but my 5 year old daughter, just this morning, said I was really strong and handsome for picking up her rain boots. I'll take it anyday.
My wife told me that she seriously appreciates me preparing her lunch for the day so that when she wakes up, it’s ready to go and that it makes a huge difference in her life. Then she gave me a hug and a smile.
I love my wife.
I work a swing shift, so I go to bed around 2:00 to 3:00 AM. So when she’s asleep, I tend to meal prep a little. I take extreme satisfaction in knowing that I am impacting her in a largely positive way.
One of my students is entering a speech contest about “Someone you respect.” They’re writing their speech about me.
I had a friend come out to me in high school.
My first question was, of course, do you think I’M hot?
He assured me that, while I AM objectively hot, he only saw me as a brother.
Lived off that compliment for months.
The smartest woman I’ve been with for several years says I’M the smartest and kindest guy she’s met. Apparently other dudes she had been with were overly sexual or airheads. Don’t get me wrong, I love being in her pants but damn her brain is what turns me on the most. The smartest woman i’ve ever been with thinks I’M smart? Major ego boost.
I think this was over eight years ago.
I met my long-distance girlfriend for the first time, and as soon as she saw me, she blurted out, 'Goddamn, you're even hotter in person.'
That was probably the first time I ever blushed, lol (laughing out loud).
Yesterday; coworker thought I was early 20s. I’m turning 41 in a couple weeks.
Was minding my business while grocery shopping one afternoon. In my head, probably thinking about work or something. A pretty woman who looked at least 15 years younger than me approached me while I was at the self checkout and asked me if I was single. I was completely dumbfounded. Took a few seconds to realize what was happening. I lifted my hand to show my ring and she left. The attendant at the store approached me to say he has never seen that happen before. We slapped high five and I’ve been living off that for about the last three years.
About a year ago, I was seeing a girl who turned out to be heavily traumatized. One day, she texted me "You're insatiably sweet and feel like everything that is good in the world." I was trying so hard to make her feel like she deserved good things, so this made me incredibly happy. It ended in flames, but I wish her well, and that will probably be the best compliment I'll ever receive.
It was fall, 2007. An unusually warm day with a light breeze. She said “that shirt looks really good on you.” I think of it often.
Not the last, but a nice story:
When I was studying at the university, I was at a lake one day. I was in my early 20. I had to cross the dam of a hydro power plant to get there. When walking back, a guy from behind me started talking to me. Maybe a couple of years older.
He asked if I knew where the nude bathing area was. I told him that it was a bit down the path on the other side of the lake. He then asked me if I was doing something this evening.
I paused for a moment and said "Sorry, but I am not gay". He also paused and said:
"That's a shame, because you are really sexy."
That was about 20 years ago.
Yesterday, my wife said she likes my butt. That was probably the last one.
A girl told me that whenever she is with me, she feels safe.
That meant a lot.
I’m 6’5”. Last week I was at Walmart and an elderly woman came up to me and said, “wow you’re very tall and handsome I want to take you home with me”. I awkwardly laughed and said okay.
“…A special thank you for investing time in teaching me how to appreciate and uplift our team. Your leadership style positively impacts our work environment…”
Went straight in my “Motivational” folder in my email inbox where I keep expressions of happiness to look over on tough days. I have 7 items in that box from the last calendar year.
Kindness, is a delicacy that we should all strive to make less rare.
My fiancée calls me beautiful, pretty, gorgeous all the time. I know they are traditionally more feminine descriptors but I don’t care I f*****g love it. Always puts a smile on my face.
My wife texted me this the othet day:
You're a GREAT husband and a GREAT dad. I've loved listening and witnessing all that you do for our little family.
Depends on if it's physical or emotional
Physical was 14th of December 2023, One of my classmates complimented my outfit saying I look great and well put together
Emotional was yesterday I spent the entire semester helping all of my classmates in college study making them guides answering questions and giving out free lectures, yesterday was results day so I got praised by anyone that passed the semester and they all passed I made sure of it.
Yesterday actually. I was at my dentist picking up my toothpaste and the older receptionist lady told me how handsome I looked. I’m still on cloud 9 because of it.
A friend helping me through a separation and custody battle reassured me that I'm a good man and a good father. It felt so good to hear, all I could do was cry.
I got complimented on my painted nails yesterday. Made my day because it's obviously not a common stylistic choice for men.
Had a 5th grader tell me yesterday that I was her favorite substitute teacher.
In the parking lot of Walmart, an older lady said that I have beautiful eyes. 😍
I had given her my cart after loading my stuff into the car.
I’m a really lucky man. My wife tells me I look handsome or sexy at least once a week.
My 4 year old daughter hugged me after just getting a haircut, she said “you smell good.” I guess the hair product worked. It was a 180 degree departure from what she normally says about my smells.
A gym bro complemented my gains yesterday morning.
That bro will get a fist bump whenever I see him now.
29th of December 2004, it was my 7th birthday, eating out with family and the lady server said “who’s the birthday boy”, I said: me. She responded enthusiastically, “aw, happy birthday cutie!” - lest I forget.
Completely changed my haircut a few days ago and felt handsome like never before. Noticed people being a tad nicer to me. Yesterday a female aquientance of mine said I look great.
A good haircut can change people's outlook on you completely, I'll tell you that.
I took it as a compliment but last year in my 3rd year of highschool in the final month i got angry about something bc i was being taken advantage of and this girl and a friend of mine said "dumba*s its because you're nice".
I'm one of the lucky few. Both my friends and my gf compliment me all the time.
Not that I'm super hot or anything.
Just have really loving supportive people in my life.
Today, wife said I am "2nd best cook in the world"(1st will always be her mom).
Not the last one but one that keeps me up at night.
I was new in the city, walking down the street, minding my own business.
I stop at the crosswalk. The green light turns on, everyone gets moving. Suddenly mid-crossing the street, this gorgeous young lady gently grabs my arm, looks at me, smiles and drops the bomb 'I love your smell".
I froze right there, blushing, stuttering "uh...uh...th..thank you". Passes a second, she waves and leaves.
Maybe I should have said something more? Maybe compliment her back? I cringe, for I will never know.
TSA agent told me my fade was *perfect* . Had me giddy for the whole flight home.
10 years ago my buddies sister met me for the first time. I had bigs arms then. Out of no where she grabbed my arm and squeezed it, giggling. All she said was wow. I think about that often.
At my age, being called a handsome old gent (I live in the south) is about as good as it gets.
"Ha ha, that's so funny😆"
-from an attractive co-worker this morning
EDIT: This morning **AT WORK**, now I see what you people are on about. Sorry.
Teenager in the street said “You’re big aye can I see your biceps?” While I was walking through the city on a holiday a few days ago.
Cute girl in BK asking for my number and calling me hot circa 2008, got me through till now.
The guy running my vape shop recognized the "SET THE TONE" Shoresy hoodie I got for Christmas and responded positively.
I’m sure I’m forgetting some but, aside from generic “you look nice” types, I often recall when my ex-wife’s step-dad’s mom complimented my ability to hold a conversation. That was probably 2009.
The waitress decided to speak up while I was a business lunch
“You look like that guy really funny guy in those movies.”
“The one whose parents were musicians or something.”
“That Zach guy.”
“Zach Galifianakis”.
A girl complimented me Tuesday on my Olivia Rodrigo hoodie - i wanted to say thank u but i was speechless.
Still thought about the time almost 30 years ago I was just grabbing a bite to eat at restaurant that had a Karaoke set up that night, so I thought, "why not?" and sang "Honesty" by Billy Joel. Woman came up to me and said, "If I were about fifteen years younger, I'd make you forget about whoever got you singing soul like that." No-one did, really; it's just a great song.
Now another one got me thinking of an incident that was less a complement and more just plain funny. After explaining something silly to a lady at the grocery store, she told me, "That's so brilliant, I wanna leave my husband and run off with you!" Teenager next to her complains, "MaaAAaaAAHM!!!" "Don't worry about her, she's going to community college." Again... pure silliness.
Load More Replies...Someone told me recently they've never met anyone as good at dodging compliments as me so THAT'S SOMETHING
I am a vertically challenged older woman. I saw a young man (maybe 16-20?) in the grocery store and I decided he could reach the sauce bottle I wanted on the top shelf. He was such a nice kid to help me out and I told him "You should tell your parents an old lady told you that you are a credit to them!" He paused and then said "You know.......I WILL do that"
Two things. (1) Students who came back and told me that they became math teachers because of me. In a few cases, that was a little scary! (2) As local union president (in the early 1980s) I advocated a lot for equal status for the women teachers at our school. One of the told me "You're our Phil Donahue." (And, yes, I realize how ancient you have to be to get that reference.)
I told the girl behind the counter at the piercing place I was at the other day that I liked her Mordor shirt. She was very excited to talk LOTR shop with me. XD
I've been single for just under a year - last relationship ended badly and I have sworn myself off apps because unfortunately my experiences have not been good. Thought I'd noticed a woman checking me out on the train and was talking to my friend about it before losing all confidence and blurting out "Ah I'm probably just imagining things anyway". She told me to stop being so stupid and said "Of course she's checking you out, you're cute... If I were gay and didn't know you I would". That made me feel better. Although that's a close friend. A woman behind the till in Sainbury's told me I smelt nice the other day - that was nice as well :)
After reading your comment, I couldn't help taking a look at the bigger version of your profile photo, and I must say, you really are cute. Super cute. :)
Load More Replies...Getting older (57 now) I make it a habit of saying nice things to random people, if the situation allows it. Nearly everyone reacts surprised, but positive.
I will often do that with strangers -- mostly because I know I won't likely run into them again, and won't have to carry on a long conversation -- but if I ever notice something unique about a server, cashier, phone service rep, etc., I will try to make a point of mentioning it: "You have the most soothing voice" or "Your smile really made my day" or "I love your energy". It is my hope that those folks take those compliments and cherish them.

after reading so many list about how men discussed that they never get compliments, I'm glad to see one like this. And my contribution is I made sure to thumbs up every single post as I read them on the way down. I want to invite everyone who gets this far down the list to do the same!
My favorite compliment was when a long-time friend told me "You're the most genuine person I've ever met."
I hear you. I got almost exactly the same compliment, only from a new friend, and it made me feel really good.
Load More Replies...This is why I love giving people compliments. Perhaps they are having a bad day and saying something nice could not only make them feel better, but also create a nice memory to speculate on in the future. (and forget they were having a bad day in the first place!)
I believe in compliments. They make a day always, if when sometimes are not taken graciously. Some people (me too) can be too embarrassed.
Load More Replies...Right. Most of my friends are teenage boys, I'm a girl, this has just confirmed that I really need to keep on complimenting them. The other day, my mate went for an interview, and I sent him a bit of a hyping up message, nothing major, and he was really quite like "oh wow, that means a lot, thank you".
Close to 35 years ago a woman, who was probably ten or fifteen years older than me, said I looked like Burt Reynolds. I personally think she was badly in need of an eye exam.
But you feel hot to today. Good for you, you remember it for years, she sure forgot it the same day, but a good thing was made and appreciated.

I done a duet with Emily, my Co-Worker, (Summer Nights from Grease) There was a random older guy at the bar, who told us that we were really good and told me, I was particularly impressive. I was surprised as Emily had a fantastic singing voice.
The last time I got an unsolicited compliment on my looks, I remember it perfectly. I was 6 years old. I'm over 40 now.
That made me sad. I hope it happens again very soon.
Load More Replies...It costs nothing to complement someone randomly in the grocery store. I love to see the smile on an older person's face.
many years back, I was on a work related trip with a co worker, and we had to take a train. the ticket collector said "Wow, you're beautiful" and then when there was a little later, a tannoy announcement, it said "you're all lucky today, because the most beautiful woman in the world is on this train" bit weird. very flattering. sounds odd, but he wasn't creepy about it. I don't think I am (or WAS, as it was back in my 30s. in my 40s now) he was just really complimentary and still respectful. it definitely made my day, and I still think about it now.
Nah, "really complimentary and still respectful" doesn't explain the announcement. He obviously did find you exceptionally beautiful.

A girl friend at school once told me I smelled nice whilst sat talking on the bus home, having just finished 2 hours of football and jumping straight on, it didn't occur to me at all until looking back, even 2 years later when we began dating I didn't make that connection…. My wife was apparently flirting with me when we first met and I was oblivious, she had to actively tell me she liked me, the fact she perused me is a massive compliment in itself because she is stunning and way out of my league to the point I would never have even considered making a move….

One thing I love about being a senior lady, I can compliment a man/boy/teen bluntly, without embarrassment.
Funny - that's the opposite of how I feel. The older I get, the more reluctant I am to compliment younger men. When I was a young hottie, I had reason to expect that they'd love it, because they always did. Now, I'm afraid I'd see "Who cares what you think, lady?" or "Eeew, go away, cougar" plastered all over their face. It's kind of sad that I feel that way. I envy you.

In fact, he consciously never lies to make people feel better. He said, "Yeah, but thing is, you don't suck!" And we continued hanging out for a few hours. He's the best son in the world. Better son than I am a Mom!
This is about men compliments. What's the last compliment you gave your son?
Load More Replies...True story. Some years ago while I was still employed in IT, we had begun a major multi-year upgrade project on our Enterprise Resource Planning platform. I was Team Lead and technical architect for the ERP/DB group at the time. I was paired with a senior consultant whose depth of experience in this specific technology put me to shame. During initial implementation we had hit a snag where one of the subsystems was failing. After a week of troubleshooting, the senior consultant gave up and handed it off to me because his workload was getting backlogged. I was able to focus exclusively on the problem and got it fixed in 2 days. I walked the consultant through the solution and how I arrived at it. After my demo, he turned to me face-to-face, made goo-goo bedroom eyes and exclaimed in an inappropriately loud voice for the room “I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABY!!!” Well, we both had one helluva laugh and to this day that remains the very highest compliment I ever received for my technical skills.
Excluding work related compliments such as "you're very knowledgeable" or "you really know a lot about the products", the last one I can remember was earlier on in the spring. I was on the bus on my way home from work, and I wore a tank top, showing off the tattoos on my arms. Another guy tapped me on the shoulder, and he said "man, the tattoo on your left shoulder is really sexy". I wasn't sure how to process that.
I hope he got a friendly reaction from you.
