A Dutch menswear company has exposed the lingering anti-gay sentiment that still runs deep in parts of society, by releasing an ad campaign that shows same-sex couples doing things like (shock!) kissing and embracing.

The Dutch are a famously tolerant and open-minded people, and the men’s fashion company in question, SuitSupply, has courted controversy before. However, the founder and CEO, Fokke De Jong, makes his position clear. “The attraction between people is an important part of fashion ad ideas,” he said. “A campaign featuring the attraction between men was long overdue and particularly relevant for our clothing brand.”

Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad reports that the company has seen over 10,000 Instagram followers leave since the controversial ad campaign began, suggesting that it has been poorly received by a large number of people. Mr. De Jong had been aware of the potential for controversy. “We do believe there is potential for negative impact, especially in countries where we have a significant presence, that is known for contrasting viewpoints.” To this end, the photos of men kissing won’t be shown in countries that have a poor record on gay rights, such as Russia and the United Arab Emirates. Mr. De Jong believes that the company’s outlets there would be closed immediately if this were the case.

Clearly though, SuitSupply believe in their inclusivity principles, the strength of their brand, and the willingness of the public (in Western countries at least) to embrace this kind of clever advertising. It has certainly gotten people talking. While there have been, predictably, shrieks of dismay and threatened masculinity by men who cannot bear to see two guys kissing while wearing that most manly of clothing items, the suit; there has also been an outpouring of support and positivity for the inclusive message it sends.

No matter what you think about the suit-ability of the campaign, you gotta admit that it’s bold, eye-catching, and effective fashion statement. Scroll down to check it out for yourself below, and let us know what you think! We don’t know what all the fuss is about, to be honest.

To be fair, I don't want to see anybody kissing. I don't mind adverts of people holding hands or hugging, but I find open mouth kissing a bit cringy!

I think it's the idea of an exchange of bodily fluids which is rather icky for public advertising, regardless of the orientation of the couple.

With the publicity around the loss of followers, and the reason for it I've no doubt they'd quickly pick up a replacement 10,000 from people who'd never heard of them until now.

Well, losing idiotic and narrow minded 10k followers and gain international respect and press attention, not a bad deal. I like those campaigns, like the advert from nike with the female muslim sport athletes.

Haha can imagine.. But it's quite the normal name over here! Especially the last name, it's basically the Dutch equivalent of 'Smith'. Fokke is a typical name for the north of the Netherlands, it's from Friesland.

So they lost 10,000 insta gram followers. In global markets that meaningless. They are getting millions of people around the world to read about the company. First time I have heard of the company and I just looked at their web site. I don't know, but it think it is very clever getting so much free press.

Successful is the ad campaign that doesn't exclude any of the advertised products' potential clients. In other words: if you targeting gay clients you exclude the straight ones who for obvious reasons are not going to feel related with the advertisement's message. In this case the ad defeats its purpose which is to increase the sales and the profits and that because it excludes a huge part of the client base.

The thing that you don't seem to understand is that advertisements have the single purpose of increasing sales. Excluding part of the potential clients by targeting a specific part of them of a certain sexual orientation, or if you want to take it a bit further of a certain skin colour, or of certain looks, it is discriminating and defeats by default the reason for making an advertisement in the first place. To increase the client base and so the sales. If you exclude clients you'll have less clients. It is so simple.

all that is about love or attraction is good for me, no matter if you are green, blue, yellow..etc. it's a very good ad and there's nothing wrong about it, just shows that tolerance is increasing which is fabulous. And many who raise their arms in horror maybe it's because deep inside them they like it. FEAR of being different comes out in hate. Kudos for the ads.

I did not see anything wrong, if it was a dress line and two women did this so what ! Or a man and a woman, black white any color. I was looking at the great background and home and the suits looked great. Wake up people gay men kiss and have the same love and caring for all people in relationships and I must be the only straight roman catholic who does not give a damn. I think no matter if it's same sex or not, why do we need to use sex to sell? I mean, when I put on a suit the last thing I am thinking about is slamming my tongue down someones throat. In all honesty, the advertisers do this, not for tolerance, but for sensationalism. They WANT to be controversial, antagonistic, etc. because it drives up the exposure of the advert. The LBGT crowd are just being used as a tool for them to increase revenues.

It doesn't bother me in the slightest except how randomly placed everything seems to be. The pictures themselves in my opinion are not appealing to look at and not because there is men touching and kissing each other in them. The suits are nice, the men look great but it all just looks so awkward and forced and just straight random and not in a good way. Idk if it was the photographer or the shots they randomly chose to use in the end. Or maybe they were going for something I just don't understand. I also think its a bit extreme and over the top to much but meh if its what they want who am I to say anything about it. But for what they are advertising it is unnecessary to show them so intimate. Its not like lingerie or something. It shouldn't bother people that its 2 men, the awful pictures is what people should be cringing at.

I feel bad for people who hate LGBTQ individuals. I think their vitriol indicates repressed desires and attraction to their same sex. Not saying everyone is totally gay but it’s normal to be aroused my hot people regardless of their sexuality. Homophobes don’t see sexuality as a possible spectrum that you can enjoy without even engaging in sexual behavior so it scares them. They’re afraid of their own desires...I feel bad for them only being able to expresss rage and hate. These pics are hawt by the way...yay!

You can tell what generation I am from by my attitude towards public display of sexual expression. I don't like to see flaunting of ANY sexual expression that goes beyond non-sexual touching; not even kissing, other than the closed-mouth greeting peck on the cheek. Doesn't matter if it is hetero- or homosexual; sexual expressions should be in private, not in public.

Like it or not, as a company you should know your customers and you should make advertises which appeals those who actually buy your products. Appealing for those who just clapping for those efforts but won't give even a cent for you to pay for your workers is like kicking your own balls.

I always considered that their adverts used women as sex objects which I found offensive. So I appreciate with this round of adverts that they are balancing it out a little bit. Still wrong both ways, I guess, but...at least it's not just one gender.

First of all, I don't really think this ad campaign has anything to do with social justice. I think the company is just trying to get their name in the news and it's worked. Now, they have to take the consequences of their action, good or bad. It's not personally relevant to me, as I don't wear men's suits, but I certainly wouldn't patronize them for a gift for a male relative, for example. What they are displaying is wrong and it doesn't matter if it's the 21st century. This could be the 25th century and it would still be wrong. Of course, people who are secular and don't see any right or wrong beyond their own personal pleasure won't agree and that's fine. If they continue to walk that way, they will have to deal with their consequences, too. But, some of us aren't not going to call good evil and evil good, regardless of what society says.

What bothers me is that they are exploiting same sex couples to sell their products. This feels like a gimmick rather than a step forward. We should be celebrating the intelligence, artistic nature, and soul of gay men...not using their images to shock - in a shallow attempt to gain publicity.

Ginger Panda
Community Member

Um... I do complain that straight men are being exploited. I complain that women are exploited. I complain when companies use tragedies to sell products. I complain when publicity is more important than social issues. So this magazine has two men kissing. Whoop-de-doo! Maybe that is "celebrating".... My point was that I felt in the climate of our country it was not the BEST way to celebrate sexual diversity. I think they could have taken photos of talented gay men - artists, lawyers, doctors - (I'm listing professionals because these are mostly suit and business wear.) in their clothing and shown that these are smart, cool, creative men. And... can't I be constructively critical? Is no one EVER allowed to say anything to advertisers to inspire them to be better. I did not attack the brand. I just have a higher standard.

Sorry you don’t need sex to sell clothes. You have not seen two women kissing to sell a dress or skirt. Models are great at what they do it’s clothes people want not to be caught up in propaganda.

You would be wrong about that. Urban Outfitters did a spread with two women kissing clear back in 2012, and Kate Moss and Laura Stone were in a Balenciaga ad where they were in extremely provocative and sexually suggestive positions together, including one where they are just shy of kissing. There have been many other ad campaigns with women acting sexual towards one another, which makes that whole part of your comment a moot point. Your other part seems to not hold water either, as it appears many people, myself included, like these ads, and the subject matter.

A couple points. 1st, straight men aren't generally interested in seeing other men wearing little in the way of clothes, and aren't interested in men kissing and holding each other. Guess what? We're allowed to have opinions. We aren't saying we hate gays, we just don't want to see it. Men solo in ads wearing only underwear actually tends to turn men off from products. Second, and more important, losing followers isn't actually, get this, real life. If they start losing sales, that would matter.

Do you see a difference between hating and disagreeing with? My dad is an alcoholic. And I still love him, even though I don't support his lifestyle.

I don't care that others want to keep the movie reference a secret... it's Austin Powers - Goldmember. Enjoy.

As a straight men (and I have absolutely nothing against gay people) I find these pictures totally not appealing. So as a commercial it's a complete failure unless it's geared primarily towards gay men. On the other hand it might just a brilliant attempt to exploit global media...

To me, the issue is not pro or anti-gay, but a case of incredibly poor business judgment. Why tick off a sizeable percentage of your potential customers? Companies have to understand that having an agenda can & will affect their bottom lines.

But wait....Are they advertising sex or suits? What are all these kisses and touches for? who wears a suit just to do that? i'm thankful that we don't have this company where i come from, otherwise nobody would even as much as ask for the prices

They wouldn't want you as a customer, so don't trouble your little head about it. Oh, and anyone who's thick enough not to have noticed that sex sells really isn't worth responding to.

These photos are tacky and garish and it has nothing to do with homosexuality. Are these considered good ads? From a design/artistic perspective they are awful.

Interesting idea, given that most people associate Jesus with flowing robes. You might want to suggest that Suit Supply contact his agent.

It’s the fact the LGBQT are running rampant throughout society trying to force their nefarious agenda on all people, including children, who they see as “ transgender “ The confusion these children experience is indoctrinated by these people who go unchallenged. They are guilty of CHILD ABUSE.

If they start losing sales, that would matter.

and gay men aren't really interested in seeing women wearing little in the way of clothes, or interested in seeing straight couples kissing and holding each other. But we don't have a right old paddy about it! Don't like it? Don't look at it! Move on with your life.
