It started as a Christmas gift to my wife, who loves the "Woman Yelling at Cat" meme. Since then, it has unfolded into an ongoing art project called "Memes of the Floating World." In this strange dream world, classic Japanese woodblock print art and legends mash up with memes, dead and living, and internet lore from the past and present. My fascination with my grandmother's small collection of original ukiyo-e on my childhood home walls fostered a lifelong interest in the art and culture of Japan. My art and design heroes from Japan include Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara. I feel honored to blend this classic art style with modern pop culture in a way that creates something new.
These are incredibly high-effort memes. Each piece takes several weeks to concept, research, sketch, and complete. They are finished with a combination of traditional ink, paint, found objects like vintage paper and cloth, and digital techniques. I release newly finished memes as art prints for purchase reasonably regularly and frequently show my art process on Instagram. I'm currently working on a book and funky home goods, so stay tuned on my social channels. Whatever happens next, it's sure to be at least a little bit dank.
Official art prints are available only at Society6 so that you can bring the weirdness into your home. Thank you for taking a look!
