We Share Our Daily Life Bridging Cultural Gaps As An International Couple In These 28 Illustrations
Life is complicated—we all know that, without even mentioning the relationships. Dealing with different cultures sounds even more complex, huh? What about getting stuck for months in a house during your honeymoon because a devastating virus hit the whole world in a matter of a few weeks, giving no time to pack? Well, nothing seems to be impossible for us.
My name is Milia, and I am an Indonesian pharmacist. My husband, Matteo, is a creative Italian illustrator, and we both have a passion for art. A few months ago, we were living the dream in Bali, got married on a remote tropical island, and moved for a while to Italy for the honeymoon and gathering with the family. Shortly after, the lockdown forced us to stay.
No drama, just opportunities, so we began to share our daily life bridging cultural gaps with funny illustrations. Spicy food, painful yoga, romantic moments, huge portions, overloaded bikes, sweet hopes, and much more. Our life seems to be an endless adventure! Scroll down to see our couple illustrations, and don’t forget to upvote the best!

When She Cooks
Asian cooking mostly is spicy. Our lowest spicy level is western high spicy level.
As an Indian, I couldn't agree more. I remember once a colleague had tears in his eyes eating our fries, Fries!!
Load More Replies...On a stop-over in Singapore. The transfer from the airport took us past a KFC and the son, twelve or thirteen at the time, decided that he wanted KFC to eat and nothing else. It had been a long flight, I was coming down with a massive cold and we were both tired and hungry so this resulted in a Big Fight. In the street. In Singapore. We finally marched into a nearby commercial building with a food court. One of the eateries specialized in chicken and I chose one with a red sauce on it ... One bite and I was sweating profusely with tears streaming from my eyes and my nose was doing an incredibly good faucet imitation. They may very well still be dealing with a napkin shortage! After dinner, there was no trace of that cold and we had a great time seeing a bit of Singapore.
Around my house it is referred to as nuclear hot. It is still hot days later when it comes out the other end.
Haha. That's what my friends said after a Mexican dinner I cooked them. Mole poblano is finger-licking good! https://www.mexicoinmykitchen.com/how-to-make-mole-poblano/

Primo piatto, gotta wait for the secondo piatto and dessert. Now, where's the antipasto?
In Spain we have also started, first meal, main one and dessert but the "prime piatto" in Italy is huge even for us.

The First Winter
Ha, as if what they have in Italy can be called winter! But I guess it's cold when you come directly from Bali.
Having grown up in Istria (a climate similar to the north of Italy, due to geographical proximity), I thought winters were cold. Then in 2010 I moved to Seoul, and then I learnt the true meaning of the word "freezing". ×_×

We had an exchange student from Thailand back when I was in high school. She was so excited to see snow. After the first week of it though she hated it.

There Is Always Time To Be Romantic
Good relationships are a lot like ignorance - it is a matter of choice! It takes tenderness, humour, mutual respect and understanding from both.
But if they survive what happens 5 years later, a way more awesome 10 years lie ahead. (What I'm saying here is that, some relationships get stronger and better after overcoming the hardships, so good luck!)

Stay Strong
Out of lockdown here and people are behaving as though this corona epidemic is behind us. I am afraid that this will be the last summer for too many people - who were infected by the ones without a care in the world.
Side Effects Of Isolation
Hahahahahahaha these drawings are so funny! Well done! And stay in love.
LOOK OUT if they start sniffing you and follow it up with the phrase, "You smell GOOD" and you haven't bathed in three days to a week.
Do Your Best
Sunbathing
Asians do this everywhere. My aunt covers her entire body - gloves, hat and mask and refuses to sit in front passenger seat. She only sits in the middle of back seat to hide from the sun. Crazy woman.
That's because many Asians (and other races) believe lighter skin is prettier. It's silly, of course, as all colours are beautiful.
Load More Replies...This is about the whole pale = better thing in many Asian countries. Often there are products being promoted that lighten skin. And darker skin is only acceptable with western features. Meanwhile typical girls whine about being "paper white and cannot find their foundation shade" online as people die because of racism.
I feel this one as a Hispanic I'm already dark and try not to get anymore tanned Idk know why I just never even understood why people don't like their natural skin color. (no hate and no shade btw)
Millennia of hating the people who work outside to bring you food (i.e. farmers and poor people) really works. also the target marketing.
This is about blacks worrying about skin cancer. Which is prevalent in blacks.
Learning Yoga
I'm pretty good with the stretching. It's the "mental calm" that doesn't work for me.
When try, i usually end up face-down on the floor. Anyone else ever had the same experience?
First Indonesian Traditional Massage
"Keruk" or "kerukan" is an indonesian traditional massage where your back is scratched with a coin. and if you're wondering, yes it hurts. a lot. then you feel better the next day. the scratches remain for a few days.
Load More Replies...It's not that bad, but yeah definitely hurts at first. You apply some massage oil or balm before and use a coin with dull edges (preferably old coins) so it doesn't scratch your skin. Indonesians do this when they are feeling cold/flu symptoms. But then again this is not for everyone.

Life Without Human Contacts
First thing my husband learned when living with me:he doesn’t get the wear a shirt more that once because he is a smelly man
My excuse, "It's my favorite shirt. It doesn't stink that bad. If you wash it, it will come apart in the washing machine. Then what will I do? LOL!!!! BUT, it works, HA HA HA.
If you use a 'Thai' Deodorant Stone, you will never have this problem. I started using one in the '80s and haven't looked back ever since. Not only will you not not smell, but you will save 'oddles' of money. Just make certain you hold it tightly, because being wet, it can slip from your fingers, and crack on impact.
"Crystal deodorant is a type of alternative deodorant made of natural mineral salt called potassium alum , which has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. Potassium alum has been used as a deodorant in Southeast Asia for hundreds of years" https://www.healthline.com/health/crystal-deodorant
