Michael Bane, the 42-year-old Vice President of Client Engagement at Deighan Law, LLC, was healthy. He could do 13 pullups and run a sub-seven mile. One time, Mike even ran 6 miles of a marathon with a partially torn tendon in his foot. Mike’s also the type of guy who walks around on a fractured ankle for two weeks before bothering his doctor about it. The tough guy was in shape. But the coronavirus brought him to his knees regardless of it.

At first, Michael tried to carry on with his work and family life, but after a long and gruesome fight, COVID-19 finally has him in the hospital. To raise awareness, he shared a detailed story about the living hell he went through, and it vividly shows just how brutal the virus really is.

The United States just went through its deadliest day since the outbreak of the coronavirus, with 100 new deaths reported on Monday. Currently, one in three Americans have been ordered to stay home as health officials issue warnings about what the next days of the coronavirus pandemic will look like.

“It’s just going to get worse this week and worse next week,” Dr. Leana Wen, a visiting professor at George Washington University, told CNN. “How bad it gets depends on the actions that we each can take today.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization thinks the US could become the new centre of the global coronavirus pandemic. “We are now seeing a very large acceleration in cases in the US. So it does have that potential [to become the centre of the pandemic],” WHO spokeswoman Margaret Harris said.

So far, 46,481 people in the US have become infected with the virus and there have been 593 deaths, according to the latest data from John Hopkins University.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people should watch out for fever, cough, and shortness of breath which may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the coronavirus. The CDC also notes that if someone experiences emergency warning signs (including bluish lips or face, new confusion or inability to arouse, and persistent pain or pressure in the chest as well as difficulty breathing or shortness of breath), they should get immediate medical attention.

Those at a higher risk of serious illness from COVID-19 (people who have heart and/or disease, diabetes, and older adults) should contact their healthcare provider early, even if their illness is mild.

To be fair, I think that sometimes people tend to brush it off not completely understanding the weight of illness. I think that's one thing to take from his story. However, you definitely have a point too. I mean it's crazy to think people are tough enough to run six miles of a marathon with a torn tendon, but it also goes to show how stubborn he is. A lot of people on here are saying it wouldn't have been this bad if he simply would have rested and taken care of himself more.

This is rather an explanation of a failing healthcare system than a proof that healthy people can suffer from COVID. That they can should be understood by everybody by now, although it seems that fatalities are almost exclusively tied to prior ailments. The risk is that one is not necessarily aware of those.

He's rarely sick and so isn't accustomed to flu like symptoms. He does nothing to alleviate said symptoms, including OTC medications. He continues working and doing routine things like driving his kid to daycare. Not discounting his experience, but as a RN I can say that he could've made it easier on himself.

XianJaguar

Ian: Exactly! If he had started on OTC meds to lessen the symptoms right off the bat, he probably would have been able to fight the virus better. But when he first contracted the fever, he refused to take any medication, thus weakening his body even more and making his immune system even more susceptible to getting sicker. Dumb. If it had been me, I would have taken loads of medication the minute I felt a fever, and I would have been in bed until I felt better.

Why the f would he let his kid still go to daycare when kids are known to be the worst spreaders since the often get no or very mild symptoms? And why would he drive a car when he is that sick? That's just so irresponsible... and lastly I find it amazing that the reports I've read online from people who say they have/ had the desease always talk about how they were so out of it they could hardly eat, drink or put any decent thoughts together yet they always manage to write exceptionally detailed stories about their ordeal recalling even the smallest details of their live with Covid...

Crystal Smith

My thoughts exactly. It's amazing that he could remember every single detail of a week or so. I'm not currently sick (thank God) and I can't remember half of the details from yesterday. And if he was so deathly ill how was he able to not only drive himself to the hospital, but to speed recklessly (he said he was driving 90mph at one point and that he was reckless) away from a tailgater and "weave between a couple of slow pokes to exit. Maybe I'm overly skeptical (not about the virus, but of people in general) but something about his story just seems kind off and a tad embellished.

Signs of a failing healthcare system during a pandemic outbreak: 1. 49$ hotline appointment just to get instructions. What if I dont have 49$, meaning I have to choose between calling the hotline and feeding my children? I won't call. Probably I'll keep on working as long as I can because I dont have a paid sick leave. Keep on spreading the virus. 2. Driving yourself to hospital... infecting everyone along the way. We get tested at home. For free. 3. I've seen the lines of people waiting to be tested in NYC. If you dont have it, you'll get it waiting in line.

I am sorry for his suffering and grateful he sought help. And there is an important lesson in his story... don't power through, don't take too few or too many Tylenol,.... a person who runs on a sprained ankle isn't sound choices, and it sounds like he approached COVID the same way. His story is his story. The lesson is, be mindful and take care of the body, listen to reason, don't delay, don't try to control it with brut might. I think this man would have had a faster process and recovery had he been more mindful.

Around the 1st week of March, I (44 years old) developed mild symptoms similar to Mr. Bane's; sore throat followed by coughing. I felt a slight weakness and my mind was just in a haze, but no fever. After a couple of days, it passed so I never went to a doctor/got tested. The common theme from the symptoms in younger/healthier people seems to be coming and going of symptoms - like the virus is staging a comeback, which can be psychologically taxing. Glad to hear his prognosis improved. Stay safe and healthy everyone.

It would be brutal! What it is, is the HIV virus combined with SARS.. Dont start yelling at me either. Several microbiologists have ALREADY read through ALL the pristine laboratory records. Those labs MUST by law keep very close record of ALL of the viruses they grow, and also available to the public. This virus was made over MANY years, since 2007. They were making it for research to try to understand how viruses were getting past a bat's immune system. Now, whether someone released it by accident or on purpose, we cant know that yet.

I am sorry but how many more scary covid articles we need to see? I am in quarantine, I can not get out, I have to ration everything, I have read maybe thousands articles on this topic, and also I suffer from crippling anxiety and it doesn't help reading about this literally everywhere! And everything is SCARY. My anxiety is through the roof, I have also million other health issues, I just want ONE web site that is NOT about corona. BP used to be my sanctuary. Now I am reading about heaviest cases of covid and I am tired. I know I can die from this, I almost died from flu once (so if this is MUCH worse, what are my chances?) I know how bad it is, everyone knows. It's on every site possible. I would just want some cute, lovely sites where there is freaking nothing about this disease. It;s not like we are going to forget about it and start acting reckless. It's the panic that hurts people, I believe so many people suffer from anxiety.

So basically the issue was him contracting pneumonia. That's what happens when you ignore the signs. If you have the symptoms you need to treat it like having the virus. Isolate and rest. Otherwise your weakened immune system will fail to stop another infections that might kill you.

Re-read. His wife wasn’t home. His wife works at a medical institution, so her advice to go to the hospital immediately was most likely life saving. Under different circumstances I would recommend not driving as he did, but it was an emergency.

"Immune boosters" do nothing guys. You can eat your entire spice cabinet, and it's not going to help you. A few ingredients may have mild antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties, but will do literally nothing to fight off a disease. Shame on the wife - who works in a hospital! - for believing that woo.

As far as I'm aware, the meds he was taking probably made this ordeal go on for longer. I thought a fever was supposed to help kill a virus? Suppressing your bodies natural defenses is surely what made it go up and down so much? Sounds horrific in any case, glad he's doing better.

It's not really racist but as the president he should set a better example, he didn't respond to the outbreak quick enough and is now trying to shift the blame by reminding everyone where the virus is from, and there are racist people out there who attack Asian Americans because of Trump's focus on the "Chinese Virus". Btw the H1N1 virus started in Mexico, yet we didn't call it the Mexican virus or the North American virus, we called it the swine flu.

I read every single word and I want to thank you for sharing your unfortunate story. I hope that you will recover fully and this will be in the books of a story that you can tell your future kids (maybe) and your grandkids. Rest easy, and take care!

So basically the issue was him contracting pneumonia. That's what happens when you ignore the signs. If you have the symptoms you need to treat it like having the virus. Isolate and rest. Otherwise your weakened immune system will fail to stop another infections that might kill you.

So he drives himself to the ER while full of drugs, tingling sensations due to lack of oxygen, high fever, couching fits and who knows what else? WHAT AN IDIOT! And his wife too, for letting him do that.

Of course he had to slip in there that "China Virus" is racist, smh. I don't like Trump, but the man is right, it came from China - its just a description, not a racist remark.

The aggressive skepticism and haughty judgements making up most of the comment section are what really need to be quarantined.

People's idea of fit seems to vary... 13 pull-ups and a 7 minute mile is my measure of out of condition at his age!
