“His Face Was Terrifying”: Wife Terrified After Husband Turns “Psychotic”

By the time you’re married, you should really know your partner. After all, the two of you are planning to spend the rest of your lives together.

Reddit user Substantial_Chair588 adored her husband. She loved him deeply, and believed she had an accurate picture of his values, goals, and how he handles challenges.

But one day, something happened that shook her to her core, leaving her questioning everything she thought she knew about him.

As she explained on the subreddit r/AITAH, the man took out his weapon and pointed it directly at her pregnant belly.

This pregnant woman was excited to become a parent, but her husband had a scary episode

And now she doesn’t know what to think

The incident could’ve ended disastrously

There are at least 49 million households with firearms in the US, and 21 states have safe storage laws where a homeowner can be punished for having unsecured firearms in the home or if a prohibited person accesses one in the home.

In 2021, 48,830 people died from gun-related injuries in the country.

(This equates to 14.6 deaths per 100,000 people – the highest rate since the early 1990s, but still below the peak of 16.3 gun deaths per 100,000 people in 1974.)

Though they tend to get less public attention, gun-related suicides have long accounted for the majority of the figure. In 2021, 54% of all gun-related deaths in the US were suicides (26,328), while 43% were murders (20,958).

However, even if we believe the woman’s husband and accept that he “wasn’t thinking,” it still doesn’t make the entire ordeal any less serious.

During the same year, 549 gun deaths were accidental and 537 involved law enforcement.

About three out of every 100 people will experience an episode of psychosis during their lifetime. When the first one occurs, it is often very frightening, confusing, and distressing, particularly because it is such an unfamiliar experience.

If this was the case this time, hopefully, it will never happen again.

People who read the woman’s story didn’t think she was overreacting at all

I agree. While I go years without ever touching one, I've been around guns my whole life. The very first rule is that you never point a gun at a person if you are not threatened by them, even if you are 100% sure the gun is unloaded. There are no exceptions and no excuses.

Damn! WTH? Even my heart dropped, upon reading the title. Who does that to their pregnant wife? Or, anyone, for that matter? It's never a joke to point a gun at anybody. I agree with the commenters, he did not turn into a psycho, he revealed that he is one. OP needs to report him and she needs to find a safe place. I wish OP all the best and hope she's able to run away safely from that psycho.

Isn't there some issue with Reddit where if you publish a post on another website that they close the post on Reddit? This was posted only one day ago and I'd think it would be in OP's best interest not to have the post removed. She needs access to the commenters' advice. I wish BP would wait to post these. They're not some interesting fiction; it's real people's lives.

You don't get many bigger red flags than that without the trigger actually being pulled. OP needs to get the f**k out. Given the age difference she must have been a teenager when he started seeing her, he clearly likes being in the power position. he has just let his mask slip, she will see that more often and it will get worse. She needs to get out now. And get far.

Every single firearms course I have been on has always pointed out you never, ever point a weapon at another person, even if you are 100% certain it is not loaded. He should have his guns taken away and be in prison until he learns that. Deaths occur when people are sloppy with firearms safety. A gun is not dangerous, but the person holding it can be.

The only "weapon" that is ok to point at anyone is a neon-bright pink watergun filled with tap/pool water, and even this is not true in every occassion. Everything else that REMOTELY looks like a real firearm shall never be used without everybody knowing that it is a toy.

I wanted to see the chickens and accidentally pointed my 9m at them instead of the spotlight I had in my other hand. If not for the safety I could of shot at the chickens! My very uneducated, backwoods (but wise) grandfather said to never point a gun, loaded or unloaded, not even a toy gun, at something you don't intend to kill. Doesn't need to be a psychopath, but it sounds psychological. Could be anything from unrecognized PTSD to a passing TIA. (Miniature stroke that passed without causing lasting damage.) Anyway, as some commenters suggested, she should report it to his department. They should know something is going on. And he should be willing to go to a doctor or therapist, to make sure there are no underlying psychological or cerebral issues. Anyway, she would do good to create distance from him, even only until things are sorted out.

He didn't "turn into" a psychopath, his mask slipped. "so out of character" is really just the end of the love-bombing. She's married, she'd pregnant, she's past the easy-access-to-abortion point, and she's trapped. It starts with a test - can he terrify and threaten her and then convince her (or outsiders) that it's a joke or an accident? If she leaves, he will play the remorseful, didn't mean it, she's over-reacting husband and escape other consequences. If she stays, he's chipped away at her sense of self, her boundries, and her understanding of normality, and he can errode her confidance a little more, and make it harder for her to leave. She needs to leave. Right away. Tell her family. Tell his family, report him to his work, and the internal affairs department. Unless you actually are a psychopath "He theatened me with a gun." is not a joke, it's a death-threat. Either way, run fast, run far.

My husband and I live in an open-carry Midwest state and are legal gun owners. The FIRST rule that you learn with gun ownership is that you NEVER point the gun at anything you do not intend to shoot, even if you KNOW it is unloaded and the safety is on. My mind didn't automatically go to him being an abuser, but even if he isn't, his actions would definitely suggest to me he is not currently stable and his work superiors should be informed. Law enforcement has to be a high stress job, and that absolutely doesn't absolve him of this being extremely inappropriately and the first sign of possible abuse, it could also indicate that he is not dealing with work stressors in a healthy way. The reaction of her law enforcement brother is also highly concerning. The important thing would be to document with his work his actions and to make sure she is safe as others have said.

Can't be a good law enforcement worker if he ignores the first rule of firearm safety: Never aim at anything you're not willing to shoot. Somehow I'm not surprised to read that, though.

My husband and I live in an open-carry Midwest state and are legal gun owners. The FIRST rule that you learn with gun ownership is that you NEVER point the gun at anything you do not intend to shoot, even if you KNOW it is unloaded and the safety is on. And you sure as hell NEVER point it at a person. Run, OP. What your husband did was not a joke and should not be taken lightly.

sooner or later, this "guy" will commit an atrocious act. He's dangerous, like most cops.

Another bastard cop...What a surprise...Point a gun at his head and see how he reacts. Run fast, run far and never return.

If he's in law enforcement I would go to his superiors and report what happened.

He's more than an idiot. No sane, reasonable person would point a gun at his wife's pregnant belly.
