Election season always comes with its selection of drama, but certain years are just worse than others. So it seems like every few years, people have to again ask themselves, is how someone votes enough to cut them off?

A man asked if he was overreacting when he wanted to uninvite his parents from his swearing-in ceremony after they voted for Trump. As a bi-man, he felt that this was too much for him to accept. We reached out to the man who shared the story via private message and will update the article when he gets back to us.

Election season is often a tough time at the family dinner table

Image credits: freepik (not the actual photo)

There are families or perhaps groups of friends that have strict rules to not discuss topics like money, politics and religion at the dinner table. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean one should always be “blind” to someone’s politics in the name of “keeping the peace.” There is nothing wrong with some boundaries.

However, what these boundaries look like and how they are enforced is a question that is a lot harder to answer. After all, no matter what some pundits try to tell you, the reasons people vote are often a bit more complicated than some make it seem. So this muddles the waters, as “why” someone voted a certain way can be just as important of a question as “how” they voted.

This could perhaps be a sort of learning moment, if he wanted to. Sitting his parents down to talk about himself and why this was an important election for him. However, it’s also important to recognize that not everyone wants to go through all of that. When and how someone comes out should be up to them, not an event that is forced by an election.

If this man decides that he is going to have to explain himself, there are a number of ways one can make that conversation easier. American scientist David Bohm suggested treating dialogue as a way to learn more about the other person, not to convince. It’s worth noting that this could mean learning things that ultimately might make you question if it’s worth maintaining this relationship.

There is an argument to cut ties

Image credits: rawpixel.com / freepik (not the actual photo)

This is why there are arguments to be made for cutting or at least limiting contact. Being able to live with yourself is just as important, if not more important than being able to live with someone else. “Forgiving” someone for anything is a pretty normal part of abusive relationships, so healthy boundaries are important. Why should voting be any different?

This man isn’t wrong to want to exclude his parents. Right now, he, like many Americans, feels raw about the election, particularly as a person who might be influenced by it more than others. He questions if he’ll regret it, but it’s worth mentioning that there will be more opportunities to spend time together in the future, if how he feels changes.

This is also a good way to demonstrate, unequivocally, why it’s important to actually think a little before filling out a ballot. Your choices will affect others and you should be aware of that. In other words, actions will always have consequences. Ultimately, there is not a blanket answer to this question, but more often than not, it’s people asking “should I exclude someone for voting a certain way?” and not “how will my vote affect the people I love?”

Many thought he would not be a jerk

But a few thought he had to be more accepting

The person who stated that DT supports gay marriage is delusional. What will his reaction be when a lawsuit comes before the supreme court and they rule gay marriage is unconstitutional? Thomas has already said that decision should be looked at and with all of the other heritage foundation justices on the court just waiting to impose their religious beliefs on the country it is a forgone conclusion they will strike it down as infringing on people religious beliefs.

Wow, these YTA "they have a free choice" Yes, and so does he. MAGAs, they want to act like c***s but not allow others to cut c***s out of their lives. I'm so old that I remember when being conservative and liberal actually meant you could coexist. That was after conservatives wanted to let gay people die of AIDS and before they were happy to let pregnant women with medical emergencies die. It must be super hard to understand that decent people draw a line at "actually claim that group X doesn't have a right to exist although they harm no one" (gays, Hispanics, trans folks, women with a dead/dying fetus in their uterus, disabled, old, children...OMG, the list is so long).

Queer people have every right to take a step back from people whose ideals and actions based on those ideals make them fear for their safety, human rights, and even lives. Please understand we don't want to cut these people out of our lives, but we can't stay around people who have shown us time and time again that when it comes down to it, they don't care about our well-being.

Let's leave aside that we are going to have to live another four years with That Nightmare in office, but OP says his parents don't know he's bi - and there's something to be said for that. It's amazing how one's perspective on an issue can change when they really see it's impact on someone they love. Maybe OP wasn't ready to come out to his parents - and that is completely OP's decision - but I don't know if it's exactly fair to cut them out of his life when they may not have realized the true ramifications of their political beliefs. They might have reevaluated their views.

They don't belong here. If this was a marriage, it's a case of irreconcilable differences and a divorce is certainly called for. In fact, it's time to break up this untenable situation. There's something very off with this post. So he's shocked his parents voted for Trump even though they say they hope he "purges this country of f****ts"? He obviously knew their beliefs if he hasn't come out. So where's the shock? He was all for inviting them prior to the election. A lot of people are terrified of a Trump presidency; if he doesn't make "internment camps", set a national abortion ban, stay for longer than 4 years, and purge the country of LGBT, everyone should sincerely reconsider their worldview and where they get their info. Obviously, some of those should get him imprisoned, should he actually do them! But if we're better off in four years, be honest and start reflecting.

If the fact that you're bisexual is your issue here, I think you need to break out of your media bubble and get some facts. Like him or not, Trump is one of the most--if not the most--gay-supportive presidents ever. Just ONE of many things--he was the only president ever to put economic sanctions on the 56 anti-LGBT countries in the world, in an effort to get them to stop criminalizing, including the de##h penalty, for homosexuality. When Biden got in, the cancelled the program. As the mom of a gay man myself, I'd like to see my son get to travel for business and pleasure without him having to worry about getting arrested. Maybe your parents actually know that Trump supports gay rights and gay marriage and they voted for him because they care about you. This comment will probably get taken down, but it's the truth. Go read up on it.

In 20 years will you even remember this election? Don't damage your relationships over a short-lived personality contest. It's a democracy. Some years it won't go your way. I'm old enough to have seen many governments come and go, and the world hasn't ended yet.

In 20 years he might be dead because gays are again beaten to death or because there are no vaccines for the next pandemic. Just because someone is related to you doesn't mean you have to keep them in your life, especially not if you know that they don't want people like you and only accept you because they don't know you belong to the group they hate.

Which side you talking about? More than half the American population voted for Trump and everyone on here continues to call them all racist and fascist. We'll see in four years what has happened. If it's very different than you expected, be honest and reconsider your beliefs.

I don't want a MAGAt anywhere near me. And if it comes down to a civil war, as a very much pracenik, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot anyone who's responsible for destroying our country. These people are vermin, it's not about political differences, no more than the takeover of Germany by the Nazis was. These asshooles should be deported back to their ancestoral homes. They don't belong here. If this was a marriage, it's a case of irreconcilable differences and a divorce is certainly called for. In fact, it's time to break up this untenable situation. I believe tRump cheated, and Biden, under his new Supreme Court powers, should arrest him for treason .

Has OP thought of the ripple effect? Parents wonder why they weren't invited to big day, what does he tell them? Unless he is ready to come out to them, inviting might be better "cover".

Trump derangement syndrome knows no bounds. We had to deal with it when Biden was president. Trump won so get over it and grow up.

If my Alphabet friends want to REALLY know what Trump's plans for you are, go to YouTube and search "Trump 2016 RNC LGBTQ+". Watch the entire video; he lays out his whole nefarious plan for you.

You folks who for whatever stupid and/or ignorant reasons are "scared" of Trump do realize he was already president, right? I mean, I assume you folks were alive during his previous term and are only emotional and intellectual infants, not actual ones. So tell me, if he was going to do heinous things to you, wouldn't he have already done it?

Yes and he didn't have control of the house and senate so checks and balances kept in control. Plus with his staff constantly changing he didn't have a handle in what he was doing. Now they are better prepared to destroy our country.

😂😂😂 the level of obsession liberals have with Trump never ceases to amaze me. Are any of you capable of respecting other people's opinions? This is exactly why not only Trump, but Republicans in general, did so well this week. As an independent, I am sick of the hate mongering and divisiveness of the left.

"Are any of you capable of respecting other people's opinions?" Really: are any of ***you*** capable of respecting other people's ***existence***? THAT'S the hatemongering and divisiveness.

All of you terrified extremists - BOTH sides - are what is wrong with this world and this country. Grow up and behave like mature adults instead of running around like chickens with their heads cut off. BOTH sides!

Only one side is working to deny the rights of others. The other side may be terrified but not unreasonably so and all they ask for is the same rights as others.

This is a two way street. Are his parents threatening OP for voting differently from them? Everyone gets to vote the way they want. That's democracy. We won some, we lose some. In four years we get to vote for someone else.

His parents are endangering people who have done no harm by voting for Trump. Hitler won a democratic election and look what happened.
