Woman Heartbroken After Chat With Neighbors Leads Them To Destroy Her Blueberry Harvest

What should’ve been a wholesome moment of connecting with nature turned into betrayal after a Mississippi resident invited her neighbor to share in the bounty of her blueberry bush, only to find it completely empty a week later.

“Someone came onto the property without supervision and proceeded to destroy the blueberry harvest,” user u/x_xDeathbyBunnyx_x said, shocked after finding that more than a “hundred berries” had been sacked without her permission on June 16th, 2024, leaving nothing but leaves and empty branches.

Highlights
  • A Mississippi woman invited her neighbor to pick blueberries; they returned uninvited and picked her bush clean.
  • Her story went viral on Reddit with over 12,000 upvotes and around 900 comments, many sharing similar experiences.
  • She plans to confront her neighbor and has put up a sign warning against trespassing, considering police action if necessary.

The account of her experience on Reddit went viral, with over 12,000 upvotes and close to 900 comments in just days, many of which sympathized with the user and shared similar experiences of dealing with neighbors who took advantage of the hospitality of others.

“So that was the first time I met my neighbor,” the woman wrote. “I was checking the mail and they were walking by and asked if I had been picking blueberries the day before. I said yes, they said they loved blueberries, so I politely said ‘oh we should get together and pick some one day.’”

Her neighbor apparently took the invitation as a free pass to wipe the blueberry bush clean of every fruit. According to the Mississippi resident, the person not only took the ripened fruit but also those that were still green and even some leaves.

“I could tell that hundreds of berries on each limb were gone,” she told Newsweek. “It was pretty devastating because I always go out to pick berries any chance I get, not just because I love them but because it’s a peaceful time to reconnect with nature.”

“I was sad that they were all gone, for me and also the birds and squirrels who snack on them,” the woman wrote, sharing her disappointment on the online forum

Users sympathized with her plight and shared their own accounts of times when neighbors had destroyed their plants

“My neighbor did this one time with my lemon bush. She asked to pick some for a recipe and cleaned the whole bush out,” added one Redditor.

“My parents had neighbors that requested to pick some cherries,” shared another. “My dad went out and kicked them off when he noticed they were cutting six-foot long branches from the tree to have an easier time picking them on the ground.”

One netizen in particular found themselves in the exact same situation and came up with an ingenious solution.

“We just purchased a home that has eight to twelve blueberry bushes in a portion of the side yard. We’ve had so many neighbors ask if they could come pick them. We replied with ‘We’ll do the hard work for you! We will pick the blueberries and come drop off a bag for you when we can’ literally because we were concerned about something like this happening.”

The woman responded to this particular comment, confessing that she suffers from social anxiety and that she “just kind of panicked when a stranger spoke to [her] and fell back on [her] people-pleasing politeness.” Ultimately recognizing that taking a more assertive approach would have avoided the bush getting sacked.

She has since confirmed that she put up a sign and is looking forward to clearing things up with her neighbor face-to-face

“I will definitely not allow this to continue. I’ve put up a sign and am keeping an eye out to speak to them face to face and let them know they aren’t allowed back on the property.” She wrote, warning that if none of the above measures work, she will report her neighbor to the police for trespassing.

The berry-picking neighbor should heed the woman’s warning, for in Mississippi, someone found guilty of maliciously entering someone’s property without permission can end up being fined $500 or even face imprisonment for up to six months in the county jail.

As for the blueberry plant, it will recover, but as far as this season is concerned, the harvest is “ruined,” as she told her readers.

Her frustration is understandable, as blueberries require a lot of patience and attention in order to grow and bear fruit. According to the UK’s Royal Horticultural Society, one plant can take up to two years to begin producing actual berries, reaching their full production potential after around seven years. Constant pruning is also necessary to ensure only fruit-bearing branches grow on each bush.

The infuriating experience left her with nothing but an empty bush and a harsh lesson to learn, but her readers offered encouraging words and support

Help them out by throwing some blackberry and raspberry seeds on their property- they'll have as many berries as they want very shortly. Hell, throw some mint in there for good measure...

Some friends had a small garden. They invited another friend to get a couple tomatoes while catsitting their pets. They came home & the "friend" had taken every tomato that had even a hint of pink on it. (Probably 2 dozen or so). They didn't offer her tomatoes again.

Never invite anyone to pick your berries or anything you grew without your presence. Always be clear. No cutting, tearing or breaking any part of your plant. You know how much catering and care it took you to grow your rewards. I talk to my plants, I would be beyond angry. You're gonna have to gate your fruits for future harvests. Now you know and your blueberry bush is small, I wouldn't have given an invite until it was 3 times that size and I was out there ensuring my plants aren't ravaged. Having a beautiful garden takes a lot of work.

When I was little me and my family lived in a farm. Once we bought some bunnies (4 to be exact). We had a big space specifically for them, but sometimes they escaped and wandered around a bit. We didn't have much problem with it but sometimes they would enter the neighbor's house. A few weeks later all 4 bunnies went missing. We asked the neighbor about it and he said they were in his property so he took them to "take care or them" (he actually wanted to eat them). He convinced my dad of taking a purebreed rabbit who had given birth a couple days ago. After a lot of convincing my dad finally gave in. She died a month later. Same neighbors poisoned my cat because he kept getting in and "terrorizing the chickens" who, by the way, were not afraid when my cat got near for he wasn't aggressive. He actually loved chickens and played with ours.

Every single one of his chicken would've mysteriously died if that happened to me my cat is my family.

Just go round and sort it with them. Charge them the shop price as an estimate. Just put down firm boundaries as they seem to me manipulative. If necessary involve lawyer.

Never assume people/ neighbors will act properly or do the right thing and you won't be surprised due to your own fault. Set up a locked door or fence and very importantly a surveillance camera if you have fruits, swimming pool, etc... that may intrigue your neighbors. Wait for your neighbors to do something nice before offering something in return and you won't be disappointed, if they never do then know that they weren't going to be nice friendly neighbors so nothing gained and nothing lost.

This happened to me at my first home away from my Mothers house when I was only 19 or 20 yrs old. I had some gorgeous white foxglove flowers naturally growing in my garden. I didn’t offer them to anyone, but our retired old lady next door neighbour asked if she could pick some to take to her church. I said ‘yes, as long as you don’t pick them all and leave some in the garden for me’. She assured me she wouldn’t take them all. Guess what, she picked every single one and they never grew back again because they didn’t have chance to reseed in my garden. I learnt my lesson at that young age not to say yes to neighbours who push the boundaries past your limits ever again.

Am I missing the part of the story where this woman clarifies how she knows it was that neighbor?

Easy enough to stop that problem from hapoening again. Have your attorney write a formal letter that going forward no one has permission to be on your property not take anything from it including blueberries. Someone decided to take the entire harvest which has ruined a nice perk for everyone. The property is now under formal surveillence. Anyone caught trespassing, ruining plants/property or stealing will be prosecuted. No exceptions. No dropped charges. Post no tresspassing and you are under surveillence at the blueberry site and around your property. Place cameras appropriately where your asinine neighbors can't get to them or block them. If you can...put a fence btwn your & bad neighbors property to make u It harder for them to trsspass or vandalize. Report this plus photos to law enforcement and make a complaint. You are setting a deterrent to future theft, vandalism and trespass. Anyone else who asks..just say no- someone ruined it for everyone else...we have to decline.
