Man Buys Turtles From Food Market And Releases Them Back To The Sea
Two lovely sea turtles meant to end up as a fine meal in Papua New Guinea were luckily spared. Arron Culling and his co-worker Mark bought them from a local food market and released them back to where they belong – the sea.
“Found these at the local market,” Culling wrote on Facebook on Friday. “Got them for 50 bucks drove 5km up the road and let them go.” These aren’t the first turtles that Culling and his co-worker have saved. They’ve already rescued about 10.
There’re seven different species of sea turtles in the world and nearly all of them are endangered because marine turtle fishing is still legal in most areas.

Share on FacebookIt really bothers me, too. Here in the U.S., we have people that pick up the stuff you can see so it "looks" nice; however, there are billions of tons of trash floating around in the ocean that turtles are much more likely to get hung up on. That's worse.
Load More Replies...Nice idea, but whether the turtles are eaten, kept as pets, or released doesn't change the fact that you're still buying from that trade and sustaining it. If this is meant to work towards ending turtle fishing, then it might not be the best solution.
Better than doing nothing at all, yes? I did the same thing when in Belize and never thought of it as anything other than getting the animals back out to sea.
Load More Replies...Bless him for trying, a pity the beach is so polluted and they will most likely be caught again because there is a market for them. Humans are sick.
Unfortunately, he is doing nothing. They will catch them again tomorrow. He is just making profits for those who sell them.
Buying the turtles supports the business of capturing them in the first place. Fight the company selling them instead.
You never know the complete effects of an act. It's possible he said something to the store owners that stuck with them. We have to trust in the good and do what we can when we get a chance. Maybe someone with power was watching. I know many are saying I'm dreaming. Maybe so, but I can't live any other way.
Load More Replies...I feel this is a wonderful story...sometimes you just have to follow your gut, and this man did just that.
Good for him as it is the right thing to do and I hope he keeps it up. It doesn't make much of an impact but at least it saves a few turtle lives. Very commendable!
What a filthy place, check out all the cans on the beach. Im very proud of the man that bought and released the turtles though, thats so awesome
I like very much your rescue story's and the brave understanding people who make it possible to give another chance to the different species that they assist
I only can say that this man makes our world a nicer place to live. Amazing...
good now remove the traitor from the whitehouse and throw it back to hell
It's a shame they're so endangered. I wish they multiplied and grew faster, because they make they prettiest boots
Somehow, turtle hunting must be outlawed the world around. We cannot be the only country that bars messing with and killing turtles.
I love it but unfortunately it doesn't stop the problem. If the men keep selling them, they will keep fishing for them. Education!
bad idea. It is justanother buyer, who has stimulated the market
Love seeing these turtles walking back into the ocean! God bless Arron and friend Mark. Reminds me of a celeb who ordered live Maine lobster at a seaside restaurant, only to take it along the pier and drop it back in the water! Happy happy!
In their weakened state, they probably got eaten the moment he released them.
other people have commented on this, but regardless of whether he releases or eats them, he is legitimizing the sale of turtles by giving his money to poachers. He is surely well-intentionned, but as long as fishermen can make money off of capturing turtles, they will do it.
