Man Devotes His Life To Adopting Old Dogs Who Can’t Find Forever Homes
Months kept passing after Steve Greig’s beloved dog died, but he still felt crushed. That’s when he decided he should give another rescue dog a good life. But not just any dog from an animal shelter. He went to his local dog adoption center in Denver, Colorado to take home the “least adoptable” senior dog, as these are the ones too often overlooked. Now, Greig is a super busy human dad to his ten elder dog shelter rescues, and his Instagram is overloaded with cuteness approved by 478k followers.
Each day Greig wakes up at 5.a.m in the morning to make breakfast for his big family of ten cute dogs. Most of the dogs have different diets. His schedule is filled with walks in the park, vet appointments…and lots of love and cuddles. “Whenever I sit or lie down at a dog-friendly level, there are always at least three or four of [dogs] attached,” Greig writes on Instagram.
“They’re just wiser animals,” Greig told The Dodo. “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These older dogs know who they are, and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are. It’s just fulfilling knowing that these adorable animals are happy and loved and well-taken care of. It makes my days worthwhile.”
Greig also has a pig named Bikini, as well as two ducks, pigeons, cats, and a few chickens. He has no more room for pets at the moment, but he intends to adopt more senior dogs in the future. Because after all, love sees no age.

I also have 10 rescue dogs ranging from 2 yrs to 14. people think I'm mad... they dont understand obviously. WIsh more people would adopt rescue dogs instead of wanting "a cute little puppy" Adult dogs are a lot less trouble ... Goldie Oldies (dogs) are the Tops eh? HPIM1630.jpg

Just like to say what a amazing person to offer 10 dogs a forever loving home & shows there are still humans out there. I have 3 wonderful dogs who where from an animal centre & wouldn't be without them. They give so much back. They are so cute.

We built a camp for old dogs called Shady Pines at a shelter in Cape Town South Africa.I love old dogs so much as they rarely are the ones that get adopted .I have adopted 3 out of Shady Pines and we totally adore them .Well done Grieg i wish more people were like you and would adopt the seniors .

What a guy you are. They appreciate you. Just the fact they are so good about posing shows that. I'm a pet/housesitter and take care of many older dogs, some on medications. Two or three is a lot. Helping these sweet dogs, pig and rabbit spend their later days in comfort- priceless!

I know how you feel Greig and think you're fantastic. I did almost the same thing, only with kitties. I had one (only one) for 17 years and he was my buddy, my kid. We went through so much together. Now I have 8. One with diabetes, one with cardio-myopathy, 2 with asthma, one that's allergic to everything, one with bad knees that slip in and out of joint, one has stomach problems and 2 that were concidered unadoptable and brought back 3 times and were on the way to be put down due to attitude problems. There are tough days but everyday is full of laughter and mischief and they are all so appreciative and full of love. Luckily I have a good vet that works with me. I have learned to adapt by doing things like using baby pools instead of standard litter boxes. And no, my house doesn't smell, I clean a couple times a day. It starts with medications and ends with brushing and treats (kitty crack). It's a great feeling to have so much inspiration and unconditional love.

Wow I wish I could do that. I'm only allowed 3 dogs at my house or Animal control will write me a ticket and make me get rid of the extra dogs. But my neighbor next door has 3 bedrooms and 4 families living there. Does that sound fair???

Your story warmed My heart so much! I just wish that there were a Lot more people like You In this World. I run a web site and there are always so many pets that people have abandoned, and just left totally helpless. I only allow post for pets In My group for Pet's that have been Lost, or abandoned and need fur ever homes. I always Help keep the post pined at the Top of my web site, to be sure that they all find a good and loving home. To me,. People that just abandon their poor helpless pets, are beyond low and just don't have a heart,. that's my opinion anyway. I have always been the one to pick up strays and bring them home. It would be my dream to have a home full senior dogs. It breaks my heart that they will be put down just for being old. Im 62. Do I have to worry about being put down?

Last Saturday (Shabbos) we read the Parsha of Noach (Noah) and then this story of a real-life protector of the animal kingdom. Noah walked with G-d and was a perfectly righteous soul, and helping animals is a good path to follow to walk with G-d.

Steve, this is a beautiful idea and one I've thought about (although I'm not sure I could handle the pig, chicken etc too)...I lost my 15 year old Wheaton in July and the house feels so empty without her...after some traveling, I'm heading straight to the shelter! Who knows, I may bring more than one dog home with me and start a dog hostel:)

I love it, because I am like that! I love ALL animals no matter their, age, disability, look or whatever. I work with rescues, I rescue and I have my own rescues. It is wonderful to know that there are others out there that feel like I do! I wish there were more. Keep up the good work👍

WOW! I think you are one of the most kind, compassionate, generous thoughtful human beings on the planet to do this all by YOURSELF!! I would love to do exactly what you are doing for the senior pups in my area. My drawback are financial and health at the moment. I have 1 pup left - a Hurricane Katrina rescue who is 12 and three senior lady kitties who were thrown away. I do my share but ALWAYS wish I could do much more. Love someone who thinks like me! I have 9 cats and 1 dog all are rescues. And I feed feral cats too. If I can get them friendly enough to get them in a carrier they also get spayed and neutered. I'm working on a black tom outside right now who is starting to get really trusting and just had a young queen walk inside and make herself at home about 2 weeks ago. Her Dr. appt. will be made today.

We have ten dogs also! Most are rescues, some with medical issues. I don't know how he gets them to all sit still for pictures at the same time. You are a truly special person. With all the terrible cruelty out there, this is refreshing.

I cannot bear to part with them but everywhere I go they say it is illegal to have this many. Any suggestions are appreciated and greatly welcomed at this point.

Greg, My husband and I have 28 rescue dogs. Most are seniors...blind, deaf, one in a doggy wheelie (Cassie is paralyzed). Bless your heart....I often look at all our "kids" and wonder where would they be but for people like you and us...

I LOVE YOU! I do the same thing!! I have 3 in carts, 1 deaf and blind, 1 with a teeeeny eye, and 1 whose penis was rotted off in a BAD house (240 dogs, 100+ cats all inside. Piles dead ones in closets. Poo 2 FEET deep.) And I LOVE the pig, too!!!

I wish some humans would take lessons from you to just open their black hearts. So many dump elder dogs that they had for years at kill shelters. I just don't understand people. The older the better. Love is love young, sick, or old. God love you and bless you and your troop.

What an incredible human being. A true loving soul!! I will always believe in adopting the "undesirable" pet. I have 2 cats with health issues since they were kittens. They would probably have been put down had I not adopted them. They give me so much love, more then I could ever hope for. They cost me a small fortune but to me, its money well spent.

My heart is warmed and humanity encouraged when I read such stories. You are a special man, kind, compassionate. I too am happy that these dogs are loved. I also hope many more people look to rescues for their pets. I have always adopted older dogs, and have never had to house break anyone, wait for the annoying puppy behaviors to stop, and enjoy the calmness of an older dog. I see your home is fairly minimalist so that must help with keeping down the dog hair! ;)

God Bless you Greig! Over the years, I taken in many stray dogs and giving them best years of their lives. I also take care of many feral cats, have them fixed and give them shelter in the winter months. I wish I could adopt more older dogs but finances are tough, with three kids going to college. I hope some day more money comes my way so I too can do what you do. Keep up the good work!

I have "only" three dogs, one is 17 years old and was diagnosed with a a**l melanoma a couple of days ago. There's nothing to do but let him live for as long as he will be able to with a good quality of life. You, adopting all these aging pets - I have not enough adjectives to praise what you do!

I am so happy for you; you are brave as you know you wont have them for very long. I have always told people that the older pets become, the more precious they become. I know this from my own experiences, and it is what I used to tell my old mother. I get so sick of seeing what horrible humans there are in the world, so when I read about somebody like you, it restores some faith in some human natures.

We built a camp for old dogs called Shady Pines at a shelter in Cape Town South Africa.I love old dogs so much as they rarely are the ones that get adopted .I have adopted 3 out of Shady Pines and we totally adore them .Well done Grieg i wish more people were like you and would adopt the seniors .

What a guy you are. They appreciate you. Just the fact they are so good about posing shows that. I'm a pet/housesitter and take care of many older dogs, some on medications. Two or three is a lot. Helping these sweet dogs, pig and rabbit spend their later days in comfort- priceless!

I know how you feel Greig and think you're fantastic. I did almost the same thing, only with kitties. I had one (only one) for 17 years and he was my buddy, my kid. We went through so much together. Now I have 8. One with diabetes, one with cardio-myopathy, 2 with asthma, one that's allergic to everything, one with bad knees that slip in and out of joint, one has stomach problems and 2 that were concidered unadoptable and brought back 3 times and were on the way to be put down due to attitude problems. There are tough days but everyday is full of laughter and mischief and they are all so appreciative and full of love. Luckily I have a good vet that works with me. I have learned to adapt by doing things like using baby pools instead of standard litter boxes. And no, my house doesn't smell, I clean a couple times a day. It starts with medications and ends with brushing and treats (kitty crack). It's a great feeling to have so much inspiration and unconditional love.

Wow I wish I could do that. I'm only allowed 3 dogs at my house or Animal control will write me a ticket and make me get rid of the extra dogs. But my neighbor next door has 3 bedrooms and 4 families living there. Does that sound fair???

Your story warmed My heart so much! I just wish that there were a Lot more people like You In this World. I run a web site and there are always so many pets that people have abandoned, and just left totally helpless. I only allow post for pets In My group for Pet's that have been Lost, or abandoned and need fur ever homes. I always Help keep the post pined at the Top of my web site, to be sure that they all find a good and loving home. To me,. People that just abandon their poor helpless pets, are beyond low and just don't have a heart,. that's my opinion anyway. May GOD continue to pour out a Blessing on You that You can Not contain, because You sure do deserve It! I have always been the one to pick up strays and bring them home. It would be my dream to have a home full senior dogs. It breaks my heart that they will be put down just for being old. Im 62. Do I have to worry about being put down?

We do the same in Spain, we have seven at the moment. Giving a home to older dogs that have been dumped in the pound because their owners don't want them anymore is so rewarding, love them all so much!

Last Saturday (Shabbos) we read the Parsha of Noach (Noah) and then this story of a real-life protector of the animal kingdom. Noah walked with G-d and was a perfectly righteous soul, and helping animals is a good path to follow to walk with G-d.

Steve, this is a beautiful idea and one I've thought about (although I'm not sure I could handle the pig, chicken etc too)...I lost my 15 year old Wheaton in July and the house feels so empty without her...after some traveling, I'm heading straight to the shelter! Who knows, I may bring more than one dog home with me and start a dog hostel:)

WOW! I think you are one of the most kind, compassionate, generous thoughtful human beings on the planet to do this all by YOURSELF!! I would love to do exactly what you are doing for the senior pups in my area. My drawback are financial and health at the moment. I have 1 pup left - a Hurricane Katrina rescue who is 12 and three senior lady kitties who were thrown away. I do my share but ALWAYS wish I could do much more. Love someone who thinks like me! I have 9 cats and 1 dog all are rescues. And I feed feral cats too. If I can get them friendly enough to get them in a carrier they also get spayed and neutered. I'm working on a black tom outside right now who is starting to get really trusting and just had a young queen walk inside and make herself at home about 2 weeks ago. We have ten dogs also! Most are rescues, some with medical issues. I don't know how he gets them to all sit still for pictures at the same time. You are a truly special person. With all the terrible cruelty out there, this is refreshing.

You are a man I could love! I have the same dream of saving elderly and unwanted dogs. I have been evicted and I have 7 dogs three are rescues. I cannot bear to part with them but everywhere I go they say it is illegal to have this many. Any suggestions are appreciated and greatly welcomed at this point.

Greg, My husband and I have 28 rescue dogs. Most are seniors...blind, deaf, one in a doggy wheelie (Cassie is paralyzed). Bless your heart....I often look at all our "kids" and wonder where would they be but for people like you and us...

I LOVE YOU! I do the same thing!! I have 3 in carts, 1 deaf and blind, 1 with a teeeeny eye, and 1 whose penis was rotted off in a BAD house (240 dogs, 100+ cats all inside. Piles dead ones in closets. Poo 2 FEET deep.) And I LOVE the pig, too!!!

I sincerely would like to know how he can afford this. My husband and I said goodbye to our pug months ago. Would love to do something like this but aging pets became pricey fast.

I wish some humans would take lessons from you to just open their black hearts. So many dump elder dogs that they had for years at kill shelters. I just don't understand people. The older the better. Love is love young, sick, or old. God love you and bless you and your troop.

What an incredible human being. A true loving soul!! I will always believe in adopting the "undesirable" pet. I have 2 cats with health issues since they were kittens. They would probably have been put down had I not adopted them. They give me so much love, more then I could ever hope for. They cost me a small fortune but to me, its money well spent.

I dont comment on stories often, but this is worthy of comment. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to your old friend, by making new friends with old dogs. I volunteer at a shelter and the old dogs are my favorite because they are so full of love. You are a good man Greig.

My heart is warmed and humanity encouraged when I read such stories. You are a special man, kind, compassionate. I too am happy that these dogs are loved. I also hope many more people look to rescues for their pets. I have always adopted older dogs, and have never had to house break anyone, wait for the annoying puppy behaviors to stop, and enjoy the calmness of an older dog. I see your home is fairly minimalist so that must help with keeping down the dog hair! ;)

God Bless you Greig! Over the years, I taken in many stray dogs and giving them best years of their lives. I also take care of many feral cats, have them fixed and give them shelter in the winter months. I wish I could adopt more older dogs but finances are tough, with three kids going to college. I hope some day more money comes my way so I too can do what you do. Keep up the good work!

I have "only" three dogs, one is 17 years old and was diagnosed with a a**l melanoma a couple of days ago. There's nothing to do but let him live for as long as he will be able to with a good quality of life. You, adopting all these aging pets - I have not enough adjectives to praise what you do!

What a beautiful soul. I sure wish I could find a man like him. I love these doggies especially the two little Chihuahuas. I rescued a Chihuahua myself and she gives me more joy that my children do. Kudos to this generous loving man. May God bless you all for years to come.

I hope he's got a lot of stock in Swiffer Mops! Seriously though, from what shelter is he finding all the adorable little fuzzies? I visit my shelters on a fairly regular basis, and they're filled with nothing but labs and pit bulls.

I am so happy for you; you are brave as you know you wont have them for very long. I have always told people that the older pets become, the more precious they become. I know this from my own experiences, and it is what I used to tell my old mother. I get so sick of seeing what horrible humans there are in the world, so when I read about somebody like you, it restores some faith in some human natures.
