You should never, ever bully or try to force the staff anywhere into doing what you want. It sounds like common sense, right? Well, some customers, clients, and guests are running dangerously low on that most precious resource. Instead, they resort to threats and aggression when things don’t go their way. Colloquially, they’re known as Karens and Kyles.

While many of you Pandas have probably run into some challenges and mixups when it comes to booking a hotel room (especially when using third-party sites), odds are that you didn’t take out your frustrations on the hotel staff. Now, let’s see how a professional handles someone who does.

TikToker @localtumbleweed, a Hotel Inn employee, literally got tens of millions of views from all around the globe after sharing a powerful video of how cool, calm, and collected she was while dealing with an incredibly rude guest. The angry dad tried to intimidate the worker into giving him someone else’s room because he was unhappy with what he’d booked for his family. Scroll down to see the video in full, as well as how the internet reacted.

Bored Panda has reached out to @localtumbleweed, and we’ll update the article as soon as we hear back from her via email!

The hotel employee shared what happened in her viral video, as well as a couple of follow-up TikToks. She explained the context behind the entire incident. In short, the dad—aka a stereotypical Kyle if ever we’ve heard one—had initially made a reservation for a room with two queen-sized beds. However, finding that it was too expensive, he then canceled the booking.

He then booked a room with a king-sized bed, as well as a pull-out couch. Now, having arrived at the hotel with his partner and two kids, he decided that what he ordered wasn’t good enough. No, no! He had to have something better. That’s when he started demanding a better room from @localtumbleweed. Something that was impossible because everything was booked. However, that didn’t stop the dad, who wanted to get someone else’s room. The employee couldn’t do anything because the booking was made through a third party, not via the hotel itself. Her hands were tied.

The interaction escalated with the dad getting progressively ruder and more aggressive. He even started spitting on the floor. Seriously, it’s 2022, who does that in this day and age? However, the hotel employee behaved extremely professionally throughout the entire encounter, doing her best to help the guest in whatever way she could, all the while without compromising her own dignity.

The video had over 32.6 million views at the time of writing. What @localtumbleweed went through is something that plenty of hospitality and service industry workers have experienced while on the job. While the vast majority of guests will be absolutely fine, there will, at one point or another, come a time when you have to deal with someone extremely toxic. If anything, the TikToker showed everyone how to deal with difficult situations without giving in to intimidation and without taking things personally.

Not taking things personally is exactly what Alexander Kjerulf, from Positive Sharing, told Bored Panda previously, during a chat about dealing with rude customers at work.

“Keep your cool and remember that whatever abuse they’re giving you is no reflection on you as a person. That customer doesn’t even know you, so there’s no way it could be. But on the other hand, don’t be subservient. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself and tell customers that abuse is not tolerated. And if it persists, hand them over to a manager as soon as you can and let them deal with it,” he shared how workers ought to deal with troublesome clients, and that managers ought to step in to protect their subordinates from abuse.

“You have to remember that in many cases a customer who behaves badly is not necessarily a bad person—it can be a good person having a bad day and that’s why they’re acting out. But the sad truth is that some customers act this way because they’ve learned that it works and will get them discounts or preferential treatment,” he mentioned to us that not all rude customers are awful people. Though some use various underhanded means to get what they want. It falls to employees to distinguish between the two.

Meanwhile, during another interview, Dr. Gabor Forgacs, from Ryerson University, shared his thoughts about maintaining high-quality, prosperous hotels with Bored Panda. He noted that guests become returning customers because of the good memories they had staying at the hotel, “not necessarily a gold plated doorknob or the extra skirt hangers in the closet.”

These memories are created by interacting with the people working at the hotel. If the service exceeds expectations, the guests will remember that.

“Languishing hotels need to take an honest look at themselves to understand the reasons why they can’t create special memories,” he said.

“Following up is a secret weapon. Comping, offering a discount, or an upgrade for a mishap is what a typical hotel would do. The better ones will always follow up with the guest and on top of a remedy, tell their plan how the mistake will be prevented from happening again.”

TikTok stood in full support of the employee. Here’s what they said after watching the viral video

The guy that tried to help was completely right. My sister and I share a bed every time we go to a hotel and we've slept on the pull out couch. It'll definitely fit two people on it. What an a*****e.

Also I'm sure if he was nice to the staff they could find him extra bedding, so even if they had to share a mattress they'd have their own blankets etc

Isn't a pull out sofa the one that turns into a bed? If so then the parents can sleep in 1 and the kids in the other right? That's definitely do-able.

It's not the hotel employees responsiblity to check every booking that comes in and see if it's possible to fit as many people in the room as booked. It's the guests task to book a room suitable for their need ffs

I literally had this exact thing happen to me two weeks ago! Booked a Holiday Inn Express through Booking.com, requested two beds, and ended up with a King Suite, which is one king bed and a pull out sofa bed (technically two beds). ALL booking.com reservations for Holiday Inn Express are for King Suites since they are less desirable. The hotel was fully booked, so I just asked if we could switch rooms the next day, and they kindly accommodated me (also because I was staying a week). Easy peasy. The two rooms are exactly the same size: one has a king bed and a sleep sofa, the other has two queen beds. It would NEVER have occurred to me to make a scene! To be fair, booking.com does not make it clear at all that it’s only for the King suite, but that doesn’t excuse bad behavior. Honestly, with two kids, the king suite makes more sense because you gain a sitting area in the day imo. They also have a really great hot breakfast buffet included. I hope the guy ended up at a Super 8!

If you are booking an IHG hotel, it's better to do it through the IHG website or their app. Bonus is that you can sign up for their rewards program and get rewards.

Stop booking on third party sites, people. It's actually not cheaper, and if it is, hotel management can work with you if you book directly with them.

I wonder if he doesn’t know what a pull-out sofa is. I own and operate a wedding venue with overnight accommodations. Each casita has a pull-out sofa. I’ve had a handful of guest who were genuinely unfamiliar with the concept. I usually have to pull the bed open to prove there is a queen mattress tucked into the base of the sofa. With that being said, I’ve been in the hospitality industry long enough to know this dad is most likely trying to scam the hotel, but you never know.

We have 3 kids. A hotel room for a family of 5 is always tricky to find. We almost always end up with 2 double beds and a pull out couch. The kid who get the pull out couch is the kid who doesn't have to share a bed. It works out fine. I don't know what this guy's problem is.

She only lost her patience after answering the same question multiple times, being accused of having made the mistake when she clearly had nothing to do with it, after him trying to make her feel guilty for doing her job and following protocol. He had an agenda, and she was blocking it. I am thankful for the guy who helped - by the other dude's reaction, he was close to blowing up on that poor girl. People need to figure out that the world doesn't revolve around their needs and stop falsely playing victim in order to manipulate situations to get their way.

Never use third party websites to book hotel rooms! You don't really get the best price, but more importantly third party website rooms are the first to get bumped if the hotel is overbooked. (Can happen when Loyalty/Rewards members add more nights, or if there is a mechanical problem with the room, etc.) At decent hotels they will book you another room nearby and shuttle you over there. Hotels have to make a decision, and a third party non-rewards/loyalty member is not a priority.

Now that are some admirably high conflict handling skills. Extremely professional handling of the situation. Not going into any emotions, even showing empathy in the body language for his dilemma instead of engaging into the confrontation. After all we know there could have been an error on the side of booking.com and he is frustrated and needs time to process the situation. But the moment he got rude confronting him with cancellation as a consequence of his (miss)behaviour, still without engaging into his emotional outburst. Respect!

He was also yelling at the wrong person. He should’ve been contacting Bookings.com to get THEM to find him alternate accommodations, since Bookings.com, and not the hotel, booked him into the wrong room. Unless they didn’t get the booking wrong, and got him a reservation exactly like he ordered, and HE’S the one who f****d up. The fact that he didn’t even try to contact Bookings.com at all tells me he booked the room that way, but wants to blame someone else to cover his own f**k up. OR he’s one of the people we used to call “rebaters” when I used to work at a hotel front desk.

I'm thinking that nobody got anything wrong. If he originally had a room with two queen beds reserved and thought it was too expensive then changed it to the king suite because it was cheaper, then he knew what he was getting. Hotels do not normally have rooms with two king beds cheaper than rooms with two queen beds. They also do not usually have rooms with two different sizes of beds, unless one of the beds is the pullout sofa. Man was being a jerk on purpose and trying to bully her into an upgrade for free. We've used bookings.com a lot and have always known what to expect for bedding in the room when we arrive. Have never had an issue with getting anything different than we asked for.

King suites from Holiday in are big enough for 4 people, just stayed in one with family. if they kids were going to share when it was two double beds, they can share when it is a King and a double sofa bed. Never book through a 3rd party, you never know what you will get, always book through the hotel site.

I believe the full story is that the guy originally reserved the room he's demanding through the hotel, canceled it, booked a cheaper room (the one being referenced) through booking.com, and was trying to scam/intimidate to get upgraded to the original, higher priced room. But apparently the genius didn't consider that that room would be booked by someone else after he canceled it. Total piece of s**t. I wonder if he would've tried this if an older guy was working the front desk.

Granddaughter played travel softball. There was one set of parents who made a game out of complaining about every hotel experience to try and get the room for free. They made life miserable for all of us. I stood next to them once during one of their scenes. I said “these are the same remarks you made at the last hotel, I can’t understand why you travel if you’re miserable all the time”. They were so mad.

I can understand being upset if there was a goofup when going through the 3rd party site and would be looking pretty closely at what the receipt said but the receptionist cannot give what they do not have nor can they give someone elses reservation without having a conversation later where it really is their fault directly that someone doesn't have what they ordered..

As a hotel worker for years, this type of interaction is commonplace. If it is not about the room it is about the bill, or something they did not like at the restaurant or a problem with a neighboring guest, etc. The front desk personnel get to deal with every complaint and problem which they had no hand in creating but are tasked with resolving. Most of the time, especially if you are nice about it and understand the desk agent in front of you did not create the problem you are experiencing, the staff will do their best to help. Other times you get guests like this.

I stopped going through booking.com when they booked us into an Extended Stay where the room had not been cleaned (hair in the shower, food splatter in the microwave.) Had the reception move us to another room that was half the size, one bed and pull out sofa. If the sofa bed was out, you couldn't get to the bathroom. There were no sheets on the sofa bed..had to get them from reception and put them on myself. On the way down to pick them up, a person got on the elevator smoking a joint. Next hotel....ambulance was called when person in the room next to us had an overdose. Only one hotel in the lot of 7 we booked was worth the money.

The fact that another guest tried to interject with the obvious solution (and gets verbally shot in the face for his trouble) is what really kills me. I hope canceled the a*****e's reservation and gave the other guy that room as an upgrade.

I’m confused. His room literally has two beds. One is a pullout. Two people per bed. I worked at the front desk of a hotel during the late 20th century. These people existed then, too.

After working and managing a hotel... THE PULL OUT is more than suitable for 2 children. Shame on the dude and his wife. Sadly this happened a lot n happens alot. (Weekenders or week dayers ) depending on said hotel properties busy time.. Everyone should always call most definitely to confirm with said hotel. This man and his wife assumed cause they could do what they so chose and it back fired. Most hotels do accommodate if rooms are available. This by no any reason is not the clerks fault and I applaud her for being professional. Sadley this dude "karen" was tryna getthi gs for free or an upgrade to am already discounted price. bam I have kicked less of a nuisance out of a very prestigious hotel before.

It sounded like the concept of a pullout sofa was alien to this guy. The clerk could have blown him away with the black magic of turning that sofa caterpillar into a beautiful bed butterfly for this uneducated family

You can tell privileged people and people who've never been poor. 🤦🏽‍♀️ 1st off you can fit 4 people on a king sized bed. That pull out couch is a bonus. 2nd you'd rather have your partner and children sleeping outside in the car rather than the safety and comfort of a hotel? LAME.

The Kyle dude probably thought the King suite would be more like suite at an upscale hotel, and that he was getting a bargain. And he likelythought complaining would get him an upgrade or other perk. All they needed was 2 beds, and that what he reserved and that's what they got. The kids likely would have loved the sofa bed anyway. Dude it's a Holiday Inn Express! You decided to save money. Next time, spend some extra $$$$ to make sure you get what you want.

There shouldn't have been a problem sleeping 2 adults and 2 kids in a room that had a king bed and pullout sofa bed. WTH? The employee did the best she could. I don't think the guy was going to like ANY answer he got. And I bet he realized he was being an AH when when someone else entered the conversation. So he was rude to that person as well. That miscommunication might not have happened if hotels did their own booking though. But this is exactly the reason I don't like booking thru third party agencies. Mistakes can be made on both ends. I once had a booking agent assure me he was a hotel employee. Well...not exactly...

Bravo! To the front desk staff! Stating clearly calmly respectfully the information that this hotel was given. A pull out couch csn turn into a bed, & if you were so concerned about your children another solution for one night would be to own your part in this. You booked the room, & didn’t read it & make the necessary changes, You @ your wife could take the pullout, give the bed to your children. After all if your willing to sheep in your car to make a statement think of the hero you could be. Your kids are watching!

What I'm trying to figure out is why she didn't tell the guy that the kids could sleep on the pull out catch. It's a pull out couch, that's why they have them in rooms so people who have 2 kids don't have to sleep in the same bed with their kids and they don't have to rent 2 rooms. Of course, she should not have had to tell him because Mr. Karen should have been able to figure that out himself. The guy that tried to help, he was fabulous and I have to say he handled it much better than I would have. I would have been much more vocal and much ruder than that guy was. She handled this very well. I love the way she just kept saying booking.com I want to just look at him and told him, I don't work for booking.com and I don't know their policies.

Might not be related but last college assignment I had, me and two girls (random pairing by the professor) had to share a motel room and there was just one queen-sized bed with just a wardrobe, two chairs and a table as part of the remaining furniture. Simple solution: I just went to reception, rented a small collapsible bed for the duration of the trip and plopped it directly facing the door. Didn't cost me an arm and a leg, required little effort and was worth it as I was literally facing the door and could detect if anyone was trying to enter and the fact that there was a small opened window behind my makeshift bed allowed a cooling breeze in at night. On the contrary, my assignment mates complained about the queen-sized bed because it was too warm despite air-conditioning (likely because it was positioned facing away from a closed window that didn't open). Couldn't and didn't say much because it was peak season and we were lucky to have a room.

Two people per bed is standard, anything else is specialist and has to be booked at booking and every single person who has ever stayed in a hotel knows this and so does this entitled b. 🙄

I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but this guy...doesn't sound all that unreasonable? Maybe he got abusive before or after the part that's recorded, but in the video, he just keep calmly asking the customer service worker to help solve this problem--which is not a wildly ridiculous expectation to have of a service-oriented business. I know that most service-industry businesses are now staffing so lean that their employees barely have time to do the minimum of their jobs, but as recently as, maybe *ten years ago* it would have been fairly normal for the desk clerk to call around to other hotels in the area to find somewhere that had a suitable room available. Trouble is, back then, there would have been at least two desk clerks on duty, allowing one to continue checking in other guests while the other tried to solve this guy's problem--this clerk seems to be on her own.

The problem was that he asked her to "help solve his problem" WHICH WASN'T A PROBLEM in the first place. "Well what do you expect us to do?" is a moronic question under the circumstances. The staff, and everyone else with more than two brain cells to rub together, would obviously expect them to pull out the pull-out couch, have the kids sleep in the bed that this transformed it into, and then the adults could sleep in the regular bed. (Though they could of course split it some other way if they wanted to; up to them.) So THERE WAS NO "PROBLEM" for her to "help him solve". What "problem", exactly, are you labouring under the misapprehension that there was?

But apparently the genius didn't consider that that room would be booked by someone else after he canceled it. Total piece of s**t. This is a "confusing" article. The hotel had the exact booking he reserved, and he wants someone else's booking. Would you also like Elon Musk's business while you're at it? How about someone elses' kid, preferably one that came with a cushy trust fund he can spend?

As a hotel worker for years, this type of interaction is commonplace. If it is not about the room it is about the bill, or something they did not like at the restaurant or a problem with a neighboring guest, etc. The front desk personnel get to deal with every complaint and problem which they had no hand in creating but are tasked with resolving. Most of the time, especially if you are nice about it and understand the desk agent in front of you did not create the problem you are experiencing, the staff will do their best to help. Other times you get guests like this.

Stuff like this is why I'm so grateful I don't work in the hotel industry anymore.

We'd always do this with our two kids - two adults in one bed, two kids in the other.

I come from a family of nine and we've stayed in hotel rooms with the same 1 king bed and 1 pull-out bed situation. Bring some cots and have people share the sofa.

Yeah and if they have kids of different genders that have a problem with sharing a bed then one kid can sleep with each parent

The guy to his GF: Oh, don't worry about it. Just watch me get a second room for free. Then gets increasingly upset when he finds he is not getting anything.

LAME.

Anyone who says, "the customer is always right", has *never* worked in customer service. Customers can sometimes be complete assholes, simply because they can.

The man’s poor wife. She must have to listen to and put up with so much of his nonsense causing unnecessary problems. And geez, sometimes we travelled with my husband’s parents, got a king suite and guess who got the sofa bed? They are very uncomfortable for adults by that way.

I don't understand why the staff person didn't tell the person that the pull out was another bed? Seems he doesn't understand that, for some reason,I agree though that the guy was irrational.

What the hey?? When I book a room for my family I book a double (two double beds) and an extra foldout bed (sometimes they give us a couch). Two people per bed is standard, anything else is specialist and has to be booked at booking and every single person who has ever stayed in a hotel knows this and so does this entitled b. 🙄

Ugh I hate this... Our family rooms accommodate a family of 4. It has a double bed, a sofa bed and a pull out bed. 4 peoples worth of bed space, suitable for a family of 4. That's how it works in lots of hotels.

What "problem", exactly, are you labouring under the misapprehension that there was?

....hell, I've slept six adults in a room with a king and a pull-out! We'd have had eight, but there were occupancy rules.
