According To Folks Online, If A Person Does Or Says These 30 Things, They Might Not Be Very Intelligent
In his famous satirical poem "The Ship of Fools", the outstanding German philosopher Sebastian Brant, in particular, wrote that our world is mired in stupidity, that modern society needs immediate change, and that it cannot go on like this for a long time - after all, ordinary human stupidity will sooner or later destroy everything good that surrounds us.
If you think that Brant is our contemporary, you are definitely wrong. The "Ship of Fools" was first published in 1494, but even today, more than five centuries later, much of what its author wrote about is more than fair. If there's anything in it that has not changed since then, it's the amount of great and small stupidity around us.
No, of course, we are not talking about such striking manifestations as, let's say, wearing clothes upside down, investing in financial pyramids, or perhaps choosing Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan in the NBA draft. We are talking about some obvious or less so cases which clearly signal to us that we are dealing with someone with a pure lack of intelligence.
And just recently, this particular thread appeared in the AskReddit community, which has gained around 6K upvotes and almost 8K various comments to date. The author of the thread asked the readers just one simple question: "What makes you instantly question someone's intelligence?" And you know what? It turns out that there are so many options that Sebastian Brant, if he lived today and read the full list, would definitely write a sequel to the "Ship of Fools".
But the great philosopher passed into the best of all worlds exactly 500 years ago, so Bored Panda took over his function and collected a selection of the most extraordinary, aptly and wittily described observations that demonstrate how to recognize any slightest manifestation of human stupidity literally out of the blue. So please feel free to read all the signs we've selected, and of course add your own observations. After all, no one is immune from the fact that what today is considered absolute wisdom will be no less true nonsense tomorrow.

One of my sons drove over-the-road and was also a trainer. He told his newbie students that NOTHING went out the window of his truck and if anything did, the truck would go back so the student could PICK IT UP.
Lying, stealing, cursing, cheating and littering are for low-lifes with no proper up-bringing. Raise yourself and go to church!
Absolutely. We live next door to a school and every day at pick up time a line of cars blocks the road for a good 20-30 minutes, on average. The edge of our yard that meets the road is always cluttered with litter from people waiting.

so sick and tired of people using g-d or the bible to support their beliefs. especially when they try to use biblical references because most of the time they are taking a reference out of context. especially politicians. there is a reason for separation between church & state: it's not to keep govmt out of religion but to keep religious fanaticism out of the govt. personally, i believe that if any politician tries to use g-d/bible to support a stand or issue that politician should be immediately removed from office. the only purpose of using such tactics is to get a knee jerk reaction based in fear, prejudice, and hate - it serves no other purpose.

For those who don't know AT (like me), here's what Google says: "Tate, a former professional kickboxer, is known for his viral rants online about male dominance, female submission and wealth. He openly advocates violence against women, and had previously been banned from every major social media platform until Elon Musk reinstated his Twitter account after taking over the company."
For trafficking underage girls (must’ve thought he was the new Jeffrey Epstein or something)—-and by Greta Thunberg, believe it or not. Andy the Idiot decided to try and insult her views on climate change by tweeting about all his gas guzzling sports cars. She gave him a “small d**k energy” type reply, about which he, of course, got all pissy. Well, in one of his pissy reply tweets, Idiot sat next to a table that clearly showed a pizza box and the name and location of the pizza parlor. That’s how law enforcement found out where he was living, so they made a beeline there and arrested his sorry a*s, and his brother too (I think he’s his brother, regardless, he was just as involved in the trafficking). That’s why you’ll hear/read a lot of pizza jokes in relation to his arrest.

A fun thing to do if you're ever arguing with a Christian who cites Leviticus -- "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination [Chapter 18 verse 22]," "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them [Chapter 20 verse 13]" -- to justify their homophobia is ask them if they eat pork.Yeah, you're going to Hell as well, fam. "And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you" [Chapter 11 verse 7]. Why, you may as well be eating poop as far as the Almighty is concerned.

The act of being rude or condescending to retail workers or waitstaff, in my opinion, is indicative of poor education and social skills.
I don’t thin they meant formal education, but the wisdom & knowledge experience brings. If we don’t allow for that wisdom & knowledge to shape up and help us grow, we’ve poorly educated ourselves in social and interpersonal senses. I didn’t read it as structured or formal education. Some of the least schooled people I know have the been the best teachers of life lessons.
Okay folks, reread it without *poor education and*, and it suddenly makes perfect sense.
I don't think education is at all indicative. I've dated some very highly intelligent, well educated & successful men. That had absolutely nothing to do with them being a completely rude and condescending d*ck to our waitperson. If anything, I think it contributed to it, because they thought they were so much "better" than a lowly waiter. And that was my cue to just get up and walk out. Manners impress me, money doesn't.
Rudeness to wait staff & retail workers has nothing to do with education/ social skills & everything to do with being narcissistic & a bully. You can always tell the character of a person by the way they treat people they believe they are socially superior to. I have witnessed & been on the receiving end of some appalling behaviour from wealthy highly educated individuals who thought it was OK to treat wait staff & retail workers with rudeness, disdain & contempt.

Lack of emotional intelligence is more fitting. Education could mean lack of social skills, being the product of an ignorant environment and not learning to ‘rise above it.’
It also suggests a potential for worse treatment of people. Rudeness is a gateway drug.

Interest in a pyramid scheme
This is a truly tough one as pyramid schemes often prey on single parents, usually single mothers, and lure them in with the potential of a better life and a community. They are horrible as they brainwash people into giving up their entire life in exchange for an unattainable dream. So many people end up losing money and alienating those around them. Many people fear leaving them as they are made to feel like failures by people higher up. The Iluminaughti on Youtube has some wonder videos about pyramid schemes and MLMs and how people get caught up in them.

Just a complete lack of critical thinking. They cannot trouble shoot anything. I have an employee like this and it’s painful watching them sometimes.
For most people, the ability to use critical thinking has to be taught. Cognitive dissonance tends to be very common in humans, and to become a critical thinker, self awareness and self examination have to be practiced, also honesty, when you have to admit to something you were wrong about. It's hard to do.
I think some are born with it but get taught not to use it. I have been quite surprised when my 4 years old grandson, just starts talking through a problem and solving it without prompting.
Load More Replies...This is an absolute skill, and can be learned if someone is willing to teach. Sometimes, it isn't because the person is dumb or lazy. I worked at a manufacturing plant for several years and was the only woman in my department. My supervisor would get ridiculously frustrated with me when I had problems troubleshooting something. He always treated me like I was being lazy and just looking for him to give me the answer or fix it himself. Not true! I had never had any kind of mechanical or electrical training and a large number of girls are never taught these skills. I learned things every time I encountered issues at work and didn't make the mistakes over and over. But even as I got better, my mind worked in a different way connecting the dots than my supervisor's did. A few of the other guys I worked with helped me out with troubleshooting and would listen to why I thought certain things. Then, they would explain where I went wrong and why. They never made me feel stupid and helped me learn how to apply my thought process to identify problems and solutions. Still helps me in life.
This is true. School nowadays is not teaching you to use your brain, it's about cramming knowledge and regurgitate it on tests. Critical thinking is something people need to learn. But even children's toys have changed over time and are less about actively playing and imagining things and mostly just about staring at things blinking and making noise.

Beware debate opponents who are only intermittently loud. When quiet, they may be reaching for a weapon. Be ready to duck for cover.
It doesn’t have to be that way, having a disagreement should be about how one feels in a given situation and both people listen to each other.
When people constantly go on and on about how such and such is overrated or people who's favorite thing is X are idiots then I suspect they are being immature or dumb. I recognize this because I used to do it constantly. I now realize how stupid and immature that was. I am not perfect and still find myself doing it sometimes. It such an easy trap to fall into.
The example I like to give is the band Rush. I'm not a fan of their music but it would borderline criminal of me to say they are overrated or that people who like their music are dumb. Those three dudes are/were insanely talented and had more musical talent than I could ever dream of. Their music just doesn't speak to me and that's not on them that's on me.
So now I try my best to say things like "Big Bang theory" just isn't my cup of tea rather than everybody who likes BBT is dumb. Calling people dumb for having different opinions about subjective things is dumb.
Much respect for your insight and personal evolution. I think many of us spoke/thought this way when we were children through our young adulthood and eventually grew out of it. My personal examples: Country music, Journey, the color pink (I was a self-important tomboy), organized sports...

Exactly. EXACTLY. I tend to not quite get into stuff most normal people get into - what makes MY take on it the better one? If a lot of people like it, isn’t it more likely that I am, in fact, the idiot here? And even if it doesn’t - why shìt on things other people like? I get it, I never took to game of thrones either, but there’s no reason to be an αsshole about it.
They aren't open to changing their beliefs when given new information.
Or, refusing to believe facts simply because it goes against their beliefs.
To be fair, confirmation bias and cognitive dissonance are real problems that afflict everyone to some degree. Studies show that presenting counter-facts are more likely to harden a person's position than change their mind. If you think you are above this, you probably aren't...
This takes work. A person really needs to be conscious the fact that the things they know may be incorrect and be willing to challenge their assumptions and actively search out contradictory evidence. It can be very rewarding (and sometimes scarry) to let go of something you've always known to be true because the evidence says otherwise.

my take is they don't subscribe to the country's laws and claim sovereignty (independence) which makes them either an enemy combatant, an illegal alien, or a domestic terrorist. In any case, they need anything between these points as treatment. Enemy combatant? Shoot on sight. Illegal alien? Deport to country of origin. Domestic terrorist? Guantanamo. Easy. Post them these offers and ask them which they prefer.

The cop just broke the drivers seat window, dragged her out and arrested her. It was amusing to watch. :)
Not really. I don't know a lot about this, but my understanding is: - libertarians want less 'rules' and government oversight. But it's a legitimate political party. - sovereign citizens 'believe' that the government is illegitimate, so therefore they don't have to pay taxes or follow its laws.

Ahhh like someone once Said " ignorance is Bliss " unfortunatly the blissfuly ignorants don't know that " knowledge is power "

Fools are always the most confident people. It goes with the territory.
Talks a lot and never listens.
For some of us with ADHD this is hard. We try to listen, we try to wait our turn to speak, we try not to talk too much, but we can’t help it. We’re not trying to be rude, nor does it mean we are unintelligent. It’s just the way our brain functions — especially if we are interested in the subject. So, I think this statement depends on how the speaker is presenting; if they are being condescending or arrogant.
I’m genuinely curious to know, how does it feel to someone with ADHD if someone talks over you? Are you able to relate to them and/or manage the conversation? Is it easier for someone with ADHD to talk to others who have ADHD?

Please stop blowing up my phone. (I kept ignoring her texts and phone calls but she just wasn't getting the memo). She is one of the most self centered, narcissistic individuals I've ever known and the fact she's a full blown alcoholic doesn't help. She'd ask how I was and 2 words into my sentence, she'd start talking over me, all about herself. I'd literally have to scream at her, "EXCUSE ME, BUT I WAS TALKING". Oh, sorry she'd say. So I'd start again and AGAIN she interrupted me. I Screamed at her to shut up - and then as calmly as possible explained to her that her constant interrupting was her way of telling me just how little respect she had for me and that MY life simply wasn't important enough for her to SHUT THE F*CK UP FOR 10 SECONDS. Knowing I won't be drawn into her drama anymore? I feel such a sense of peace.
Oddly enough, when they try and tell me their IQ.

If they believe in TV magicians, ghost hunting show, or that most other reality shows are not scripted
I used to work with a guy who thought profession wrestling was real. He'd never let me jump off my desk and land on his throat with my knee though.
What is a TV magician? If it's like the duo Penn and Teller, then everyone knows those are illusions. If it's a magician (wizard, etc) like Harry Potter, then it's fictional. Are there other kinds of TV magicians?
Wait, by "believe in TV magicians", do you mean there are adults who think some people can actually levitate or make things appear/disappear? Lol
Considering I've witnessed ghost phenomena myself, I enjoy a good paranormal show. I also like watching to find fake ones. Watch Fright Club, it's hilarious and also pretty cool.
You try to show them how ghosts would contradict the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and they just don't want to know.
I have absolutely no idea why, but people here seem to think that poor grammar = unintelligent, without considering people who don't speak the language and are trying their best. People can be Intelligent in other ways some are good at solving puzzles, some are good at mathematics or physics, some have excellent memory and some are good at quizzes.
Yeah. Grammar is a social construct and a form of classism. I'll make jokes about it and sometimes correct my friends in a gentle way (I try not to make it obvious) but if you actually believe people who don't use great grammar are less intelligent you're the problem
Grammar, punctuation and correct word selection are essential in ensuring that what you say and write are not misunderstood.

Exactly. Dyslexic, sight-impaired etc.aside, but if you've ever read a book or paid attention in English class you should grasp the basics. No excuse for their/there/they're confusion.
Load More Replies...in my country there are two cases: people who simply are not pronouncing the words right and hence can't tell the difference (then/than, they/the, their/they're/there being the most common); and, the fact that we have 11 official languages, none of which have the crazy grammar of english - except english. The rest have consistent grammar and spelling. So anyone here who is not first language english gets a free pass from me. My pet peeve here is we apparently have no idea how to use apostrophe-S. Drives me mad.
Ah, the counterargument to the they, they're, their pet peeve. I tend to lean towards this argument. "Good" grammar aids clarity and signals that the person writing is from a certain class, but it doesn't equal intelligence. I always think of the deeply poignant Ain't I a Woman speech by Sojourner Truth. She was a woman born to slavery, but the sharpness and eloquence of that speech moved people despite breaking the rules of grammar.
But what about arguing with bad grammar nationalists? In fhat case it is a valid argument; when someone claims to be superior, yet cannot even speak their own language properly.
Load More Replies...I have an unofficial rule that I'll only correct someone's grammar online if they're making fun of somebody else for a grammatical error and questioning their intelligence because of it. I couldn't give a f**k if you mistakenly apostrophise "its" or "your" if the meaning of what you said is clear. The smartest person I ever knew was horribly dyslexic. If you read something he'd written and didn't know him, you might conclude he was Trump-level stupid. But this guy was an actual freakin' genius.
Sorry, op has a point. However, if you read enough posts, you can learn the difference between new english uses, and native uses who are just plain stupid.
I must admit, I have a peer who is college-educated and very well credentialed, but doesn't know the difference between their, they're, and there...you're and your, it's and its. English is first language. I find myself doubting IQ, even though it's judgmental to do so. I haven't had the courage to ask the person to say - out loud - "that's you're box" while unlinking the contractions to make sure of accuracy. ("That is you are box." -makes no sense - If said out loud, words can be corrected.)
As someone working in the linguistics/language field I could not agree more. Grammar can be notoriously tricky and I still make mistakes. I am slow to judge people's grammar as you never know if hey are second language learners or have a learning disability like dyslexia. Furthermore, I know people who are incredibly intelligent when it comes to scientific fields yet oftentimes struggle to put their thoughts into coherent writing. I do firmly believe that more emphasis needs to be placed on teaching reading and writing in elementary schools.
Poor grammar & spelling can be understood on many levels. But I have often found, it's an idiot trying to make themselves sound smart and failing miserably.
The kind of dogmatic anti-education sentiment you see going around the internet. "I learned more in this 10 minutes video than in 3 years of highschool", "College is a scam, my friend's cousin's dog dropped out to run his own business and is now a multimillionnaire".
The education system is imperfect and you don't *need* a college degree to lead a successful life, but people who outright dismiss college as a useful tool or ask why highschool doesn't teach us about taxes after they slept through algebra and ~~home-ed~~ home-ec just seem to be complaining for the sake of complaining. "Oh look at me I'm a contrarian that likes to s**t on some of the most useful established tools in modern society".
While I totally believe education is a very useful tool because it passes down useful information and builds vital skills in all areas of life, I firmly believe that knowledge and wisdom are not the same. Knowledge will tell you fire is hot, wisdom will tell you that it can cause great harm and chaos and must therefore be respected.
If you didn't learn much in high school, you did it wrong. What you get out of education is directly tied to what you put into it. To defend Joel, metaphors and analogy are very hard for me.
While I personally didn't get much from school, I am with the OP here. 80's education was particularly inaccessible to kids with learning difficulties, but my experience is no reason to condemn the whole system. I have worked in education now for around 25 years and I feel kids who struggle still out perform (and are happier in the end) than those whose parents dismiss education as useless. One of the main things adults like this often say is how they have never needed calculus or trigonometry in adult life. This puts their kids at a massive disadvantage as we first have to brake down mental walls before we can start educating. Excellent robust scientific research has proven children who learn higher level maths are more likely to be empowered adults who are less likely to be conned (especially by polotitions. Studies indicate, this benefit also applies to children who never really understood the maths concepts, but tried. The political elite gain most from poor maths education.
Tech school has much offer in this particular era... no substantial debt and you can fast track into a lucrative career. Also: go for a degree at your leisure, if that's what you want.
My school didn't have home economics for reference that was two years ago. Most schools don't have that class anymore.
Hey, I know someone who went to trade school and earns 6 figures a year with no student debt. College can be a scam if you go for one of the many degrees with no real earning potential, particularly in the humanities. You do the Sciences, Accounting, etc, you are doing ti right, you do a junk degree, you got scammed. Its about the degree major, not the actual going to college which is important. College can be useful, but also can be a scam, all depending on how you use it.
I recently listened to an interview with a famous YouTuber. He has around 4M followers and is honestly awesome. He said that one of the things he regretted was dropping out of the cinematography course he started because it would have solved a lot of his earlier issues with his channel. I remember that because I need to remind myself that you can regret not doing that course or getting through the syllabus. Sometimes education doesn't have a do-over opportunity.
College can't guarantee personal success. It can give you some tools and training but beyond that it's a c**p shoot. In the USA at least an expensive one at that.

This. Drives. Me. Crazy. I had one person try to mock me for saying "It's could have.. and would have" they were all like "NO it's not, you stupid or something?" - please see 'confidently ignorant' on this list...
‘Pacific’ instead of ‘specific’ really winds me up a lot more than it should.
I think mistakes like this happen to people who don’t read. They only hear the phrase “could’ve” and parse it wrongly.
I could of had class. I could of been a contender. I could of been somebody. If only I fixed my bad grammar.
At the same time, we must allow room for growth of language. Popular usage can and will overcome classic usage, and eventually require rewriting some schoolbooks. I understand that 'literally' is currently undergoing rethinking.
How about a double negative? "she couldn't do nothing about it." How do they get through school without learning this???
Drives me crazy along with people confusing "loose" with "lose".

Nah. I've never given a f**k about that. There are far more important things to be pissed off about.
As a non native speaker I never found it that difficult. Where ist it? It's over there, To whom does the item belong? It's their item, its theirs. They are = they're. I never got why it's so hard. But where/were is really difficult sometimes. Did I use it right in this text?
Or it could be a speaker from another language or someone who has dyslexia.

The inability to distinguish between subjective and objective reality
In fairness subjective reality is the only one we experience. Our reality is a model constructed in our minds to make sense of the stimuli that are constantly putting in - some of these stimuli are second, third, eleventy-ninth-hand pre-processed stimuli. Where as there are methodologies to gain a picture of objective reality(eg the scientific method) we only experience even them through the lens of our individual subjective experience of reality. I’m now going for a strong coffee and a lie down in a darkened room
There is no objective reality tho. Everything is subjective. Everything.
Viper Dogfish, you just made a new friend. I wanted to say that but figured no one would even accept the comment being said. I'm 100% with you on the concept of radical subjectivity. A thing only exists when we acknowledge it in the present moment.
Load More Replies...This has become a bit philosophical. We all see the world through a subjective lens. It's a case of the straw in another's eye being more evident than the rafter in our own. However, some people take this too far and deny verifiable facts that contradict their worldview.

I dunno about this one. My stepsister's 8 year old son died of cancer. Her husband started posting DAILY updates about their son's health, first as a way of keeping a lot of people informed on what was happening, then it became a journey through the treatment, and finally a format to process through their grief when their son passed. It helped them through that gut-wrenching time, and allowed others to connect with them in ways that they wouldn't have been able to before.

The purpose of punctuation and capitalization is to provide meaning and clarity. So they are valuable things. Long paragraphs without them can be the written equivalent of projectile vomiting.

when i was in college one of the classes started of with the professor writing the chinese character for listening on the board. he then broke it down by showing how the character incorporated parts of other characters for ears, heart and (i think..) soul. his point was that most people, especially when arguing, tend to be focused on that they are going to say in response to statements they are not hearing, hence, not conducive to true communication.
Anyone that says, "My truth". A*****e there's only THE truth. You can have FEELINGS but you arent entitled to your own truth.
It’s bad shorthand for “my lived experience.” But still, philosophers have labored for centuries to find “the truth.” The best we have on hand are raw data based on facts, sorted by reasonable relevance to the situation at hand.
i think the best we have is the current truth - as both facts and how we interpret them are constantly changing - like the way that science has models not truths - models that they try to disprove and wait for a better one. the only true truths lie in logic. not sure - ask QI how many moons does the Earth have - one, two, none thousands - it depends ....

The truth will stand on its own. It cannot be disproven. A falsehood can be picked apart, flaw by flaw. It can't hold up to honest scrutiny.
This comment is stupid. In reality there rarely ever is THE TRUTH. What's true or not true often depends on the situation and circumstances. It is true that 'family' is in general a positive concept that evokes feelings of safety and peace. But it's also true that for some people it's evoking feelings of horror and dread. Everyone has a personal truth that influences their perception of life and also there is a general truth. And most important: a fact can have two or more complete opposite thuths to it. Facts are not the same as truth. A truth is made of several facts influencing each other and can indeed differ from person to person. So what is true for one person, can be dead wrong for others.
When you prove your point in a discussion and the other person explains that it doesn’t even matter because their REAL point is something that’s an off-shoot of that subject in a “gotcha!” manner.
Think everyone knows someone who's like this! Think it's their fear of being wrong!
But that's not the point. The REAL point is that the list keeps moving every time I stop to comment, and I don't like it.

“I do my own research”
I mean, it's good to not blindly follow a certain belief system, but the line has to drawn at things like medicine and science. Those doctors will always know more than me since I am not a doctor. We have to put our trust somewhere besides just ourselves.
Yes, my doctor knows more than me. No, I do not have to blindly accept his diagnosis or recommendations, because doctors are fallible human beings and can just be plain wrong. No doctor can possibly know about all conditions or be up to date on the lastest knowledge, even within a fairly narrow specialty and if I can find relevant information through a support organisation or forum online then it is fair that my doctor should listen to this information and take it into account.

But is anything significant ever accomplished by a reasonable person? Are not fanatics needed to kick society along?
No not really. Read some texts from developmental scientists. It looks that way because when wars end and suppressive governments are beaten, there often follows a period of maximum development. But in reality fanatics slow down development and growth and when they're toppled over or beaten all the knowledge they tried to suppress bubbles to the surface and appears, but with often years of delay. Also, during wartime the development gets limited to weapons and warfare while other, much more important developments get put on the back burner. After a war it seems we have won lots of accomplishment, but if you really look you'll find that the most useful things that really make life better for people is developed during peace. Just look at Afghanistan. Full of fanatics, and decades behind the rest of the world. When was the last time North Korea brought up anything even remotely useful? Fanatics definitely stunt growth and even throw whole countries back in their own development
