From the beds we wake up in to the buses we take and the offices we work at, it often seems like we live on a man-made planet. But the natural world is all around us, all the time. It's just we build such intricate hideouts, we sometimes forget about it. So let's refresh our memory.

For that, Bored Panda invites you to visit 'The Fabulous Weird Trotters.' It's a Facebook page that regularly shares pictures of the "sometimes weird, sometimes fabulous, and every time fabulous weird" faces of Mother Nature.

They've got adorable plants, atmospheric ghost lights, creepy spiders, and much, much more. No wonder over 1.3 million people follow this page.

We're releasing this list on a special occasion. Almost exactly 50 years ago, on June 5-16, 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment (also known as the Stockholm Conference) was held in Stockholm, Sweden. It was the UN's first major conference on international environmental issues, and marked a turning point in the development of international policies.

When the participating 122 countries — 70 of them considered to be developing and poor — adopted the Stockholm Declaration, they essentially committed to 26 principles and an action plan that set in a multilateral environmental regime.

One of the overarching principles was that sovereignty should be subject to not causing harm to the natural world of other countries as well.

This was the first globally subscribed document that recognized the "interconnections between development, poverty and the environment."

These principles were celebrated as a harbinger of "new behavior and responsibility which must govern their relationship in the environmental era."

In a way, the planet's environment and natural resources became a common resource with countries resetting their relationship with nature — from sovereignty over resources to shared responsibility for their sustainable uses.

The key agreements of the Stockholm Declaration were:

Earth's natural resources, including air, water, land, flora and fauna, especially representative samples of natural ecosystems, must be safeguarded for the benefit of the present and future generations through careful planning or management.

The discharge of toxic substances or of other substances and the release of heat, in such quantities or concentrations as to exceed the capacity of the environment to render them harmless, must be halted in order to ensure that serious or irreversible damage is not inflicted upon ecosystems. The just struggle of the peoples of ill countries against pollution should be supported.

The Stockholm conference started the contemporary "environmental era." In many ways, it took governance of planetary concerns to the mainstream. This resulted in over 500 multilateral environmental agreements being adopted in the last 50 years.

In fact, most of today's conventions related to planetary crises like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the whole environmental regime being implemented through the UN system trace their origin to the Stockholm Declaration.

On June 2-3, instead of discussing how the past half-century lived up to their previous vision, world leaders will talk about the next 50 years and the emergency actions that our planet so desperately needs.

"Human development is largely fuelled by a tripling in the extraction of natural resources, food production, and energy production and consumption over the past 50 years," says an advance draft copy of the document to be discussed at Stockholm+50.

A visualization of the next 50 years, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on May 4, 2020, states that "1 to 3 billion people are projected to be left outside the climate conditions that have served humanity well over the past 6,000 y [years]."

The study explains how humans have resided in a “climatic envelope” characterized by ~11˚C and 15˚C of mean annual temperature and “the geographical position of this temperature niche is projected to shift more over the coming 50 y than it has moved since 6000 BP [before present]”.

According to Tim Lenton, co-author of the study, the situation looks unbelievable to many. Areas in North America and Europe that have comfortable temperatures would become as hot as North Africa. Tim warns: "Where we are headed is a place we don't want to go."

Let's hope that Stockholm+50 will come up with something that will ensure both humans and all the critters that we see on 'The Fabulous Weird Trotters' will get to keep our homes.

"Rhodotus Palmatus, Aka The Wrinkled Peach

Rhodotus is a saprobic mushroom, meaning it feeds off of dead organic matter, specifically fallen hardwood logs. It has a “circumboreal” distribution, and can be found in North America, Europe, North Africa, as well as Asia.
It is most likely to fruit during cooler temperatures after long periods of rainy weather. This beauty is not edible and hard to find, but wow what a cool looking mushroom!"

When Sperm Whales Need A Nap, They Take A Deep Breath, Dive Down About 45 Feet And Arrange Themselves Into Perfectly-Level, Vertical Patterns

They sleep sound and still for up to two hours at a time between breaths, in pods of 5 or 6 whales, presumably for protection. No one knew whales slept vertically until a 2008 study documented the behavior. And no one captured really good photography of it in the wild until 2017. French photographer Stephane Granzotto was documenting sperm whales in the Mediterranean for his book on the creatures when he came across these sleeping whales.

Indian Pipe - This Fascinating Plant (Monotropa Uniflora)

Definitely one of nature’s weird wonders. Because it has no chlorophyll and doesn’t depend on photosynthesis, this ghostly white plant is able to grow in the darkest of forests.
Many people refer to this strange plant as Indian pipe fungus, but it is not a fungus at all – it just looks like one. It is actually a flowering plant, and believe it or not, it is a member of the blueberry family.

    Cyclocosmia (Trapdoor Spider)

    Cyclocosmia (Trapdoor Spider)

Also known as The Chinese Hourglass Spider, cyclocosmia latusicosta, are a type of trapdoor spider. They are ambush predators that patiently wait for their unaware victim to scurry past their lair before they strike and eat them as soon as they detect motion.

If threatened, they burrow themselves headfirst and back up plugging the hole with their abdomen. Their backside looks a lot like a coin and because of that they were often mistaken as coins by Chinese farmers who would come across them. They also resemble Aztec sun stones. Their bite is low risk (non-toxic) so if you ever pick one up, and it bites you, you should be fine.
