According to Statista's data, the number of international tourists traveling around the world last year almost reached a billion. Of course, this is not so much compared to the pre-pandemic 1.4 billion and more, but tourism is gradually recovering, and this is great. Today, if you have money and desire, you can go literally anywhere in the world, and the only question is picking a place.
And this is where various services like Tripadvisor, Booking and Google Maps come to the rescue with their reviews, rankings and so on, where almost every tourist venue has its own rating. Some of the world-famous attractions in these ratings justify their great fame, while others, on the contrary, look a tad bit overestimated. At least according to this study.

One of Los Angeles' major tourist magnets, over 2.5K copper stars are embedded in the sidewalk here, celebrating film and music legends, show business figures and iconic characters. Simply approach the very first of the stars and you are guaranteed to be stuck there for several hours. Even if you are not at all interested in music and cinema...
Its a horrible waste of time unless you desperately want to see someone standing on a square of sidewalk dressed like an imaginary character or dead actor whose name is on the sidewalk square. Its just the world largest physical list of famous names. At least the $20 map to the stars houses has a chance of actually seeing someone famous.
Stinks of weed. There are so many beggars and homeless people, yet a few blocks away there are homes worth 7 or 8 figures. Such a contrast.
That's everywhere. Where should the homeless go? Tucked away somewhere to never be seen and treated like vermin? They're just people.

LA local here…. Every person who comes here wants to see Hollywood. I always discourage it…. I tell them they will be seriously disappointed. There are a million other wonderful places to go and things to do here. The only thing to go to Hollywood for on vacation is to see a concert at The Hollywood Bowl or The Palladium. There’s some great legendary restaurants and maybe a studio tour, but to walk around? It’s become a total dump.
I can see this stretch being a bit of a hazard to walk along with people stopping, looking at the ground, not watching where they're going.
I remember when I was a kid and it was pretty neat But I went there about 10 years and there weren't hardly any gaps between gum that people spit out on to the sidewalk.
I liked the Walk of Fame.. mainly the stores and attractions. Saw a movie premiere for the Roommate. It was neat...different than anything back home.
A masterpiece of Indian architecture, the tomb of the wife of the ruler of the Mughal Empire, who died in childbirth. The inconsolable husband ordered a luxurious mausoleum to be built for his wife, and years later he was buried there, next to her. Today, the Taj Mahal attracts millions of tourists and pilgrims from different countries, and has become one of the most recognizable architectural silhouettes in the modern world.
The smog was so thick with the smell of the local sewage in the nearby river I could hardly breath. Fortunately the smelly fog dissipated to be replaced by intense heat, swarms of beggers and vast numbers of hawkers flogging tat.
Thank you. The blurb on here was useless. Would've been much better if they'd said why it was overrated instead of talking it up.
Load More Replies...I suspect most of the down vote on this is that it is absolutely swarming with aggressive hawkers, street people, beggars and others who are simply intent on getting money from you. This is not their fault as India is a relatively rich country but hugely divided along historic caste and political lines - this is another case of bloated, corrupt politicians and civil employees ruining something for their own gain.
True.... It is too full... plus pollution.. but nothing to do with caste or politics here... just unnecessary aggresive hawkers and guides... thats all
Load More Replies...Been to the Taj Mahal more than 10 times. Is it crowded? Yes. Is it spectacular? YES.
Fully disagree- yes there were throngs of people but it was the Taj friggn Mahal… one of the wonders of the world - I grew up in a tourist town and can’t stand crowds, but this time it was when laying my hand on that marble - oh .. outside is very gritty just like all of India … inside there wasn’t a scrap of trash anywhere - 10/10 would do it again -
Can anyone even go inside of it? If not, just as well to see it in pictures. There's castle called Humboldt Castle in the USA side of Thousand Islands. It was built relatively recent for North American history. It's not finished and pretty empty. Every room looks the same. I don't think the castle was ever finished. I think the guy who built it died before it was finished. It looked nice from the outside but disappointing and underwhelming inside. I've been to another castle in Canada that was more interesting to explore.
The rats please do not forget the thousands of rats that brazenly walk around
I was bitten by a monkey outside of the Taj Mahal. People ran up and tried to beat it off. It just would not let go and I still have the scar.
I visited in 2017. Amazing. The architecture and everything. 10/10 for me.
Disney's second theme park located near Orlando, Florida. Opened in 1971, after the death of Walt Disney, however, it was planned and built according to his behests and ideas. The world-famous symbol of the park is Cinderella's Palace. Throughout most of the 21st century, it has traditionally been the most visited theme park in the world.
I totally agree. Definitely didn’t feel the magic there. Mostly felt ripped off. Six flags is way more fun and affordable.
I went here when I was 17? I think. I thought it was going to be lame but it was actually pretty fun. Then again I was a teen, running around with other teens, acting like teens. Didn't have to pay for anything on top of that and got anything I wanted. That was the first and last time, because at my age and bank account, I couldn't do all that again lol
These places are best for the kids who have no inkling the worth of a dollar. Just that mommy and/or daddy took the time to bring them to a fun place with familiar movie characters. I would like to experience it just once one day. But I here the line ups are horrendous and it would take weeks to see and do everything.
I've been there twice, once each for two of my kids, 10 years apart. Neither of the kids remembers or even cares now, so count me a double sucker for spending way more than the memories are worth.
I never understood why people take kids to places like that if they're under the age of 10. My mom took me when I was 3 and is mad that I don't remember

Stasher is a luggage storage network headquartered in the UK, and since 2019 they have annually ranked the world's most popular attractions based on a range of different factors. These include reviews on the largest travel services and aggregators, Google reviews, distance to the nearest international airport, quality of local accommodation and tourist safety. The pervasive influence of TikTok is also not left out of focus - TikTok engagement is taken into account as well. In general, a rather complex calculation method - and pretty interesting results.
The largest entertainment complex in Korea, located in the suburbs of Seoul. In addition to a variety of attractions, there is also a zoo and a water park. The resort is owned by Samsung Everland, which is part of the Samsung group.
Everland, located in the suburbs of Seoul, South Korea, is the largest entertainment complex in the country. Some visitors may have had negative experiences or specific expectations that were not met, while others may have thoroughly enjoyed their time at Everland. So it's truly depend on personal experiences and thoughts.
One of the largest theme parks in Europe, located in Tarragona, near Barcelona. An interesting feature of the park is its division into six thematic zones, representing one of the historical civilizations, and reproducing the characteristics of each of these cultures.
Why is it so low ? It is quite great with among the thrillest coaster in Europe (Shambhala mostly) Not to forget since it's in Spain it is quite cheap compared to Disneyland or EuropaPark.
This list is clickbait and pure BS so people would comment more. PortAventura is fantastic. I personally prefer it to EuropaPark, but Phantasialand is definitely above PA. But yeah, I’m sure there are maaaaaaaany more worse attractions in the world than PortAventura 😅🤣

Okay, I was questioning this list already but PortAventura being on the list of worst attractions is pure BS….
The Forbidden City in Beijing is the former palace of the Chinese emperors and the largest palace complex in the world today. It is located in the very center of Beijing, and in 1987, the first of all sites in China, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It used to be only for the elite. But now it’s opened to the public. It’s a very interesting place.

" The Worst Tourist Attractions " 1.NOT BUILT TO ATTRACT TOURISTS. 2. WHAT'S WRONG ABOUT IT ?
Now, we will not delve into the top of the highest-rated places on the planet - we will only say that the Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest (7.34 points out of 10) leads the top 3, ahead of Disneyland Paris and the Blue Lagoon in Iceland. Another thing is more interesting - it turns out that there are places that we traditionally consider iconic among tourists - but at the same time they show some really low rates among people. So can Stasher be considered a true myth buster?
The most visited national park in the United States, opened back in 1940. This park is home to the Appalachian Trail, the longest continuous hiking trail in the world. However, the location of the park in an industrialized region has been causing serious concern among environmentalists for many years.
sorry, but the Industrialized regions came after the park, it is a beauty worth a visit.
Go visit the nearby Big South Fork Park. Great scenery and a fraction of the traffic. No Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Wahoo!
Load More Replies...In the early 90s, where we backpack in Colorado (not the same place I know), it used to smell of just pine trees and clean air. Now it smells a mixture of pine trees, semi-clean air, with a splash of exhaust. Still way cleaner air than where I'm from but I can definitely smell the difference 😔
What industrialized region? I live in North Carolina near the mountains. Not much industry around here. There used to be furniture mills, but those have mostly gone overseas 20 years ago.
the Great Smokies are NOT in an industrialized region. It's a couple hundred miles downwind to Charlotte or Atlanta. There is a smaller city, Knoxville, with mining, but what mountain range doesn't have mining somewhere nearby? By this logic, there should be no parks in Europe at all.
Old information. The Smokies are downwind from the formerly heavily industrialized regions in what is now the rust belt. Air pollution has mostly subsided in the past 30 years. I live in these mountains and the air is fine. That said, stay away anyway. We like our isolation.
Back in the 80s, I used to deliberately detour from Knoxville, down 441 to Waynesville on the return trip home when I was trucking empty to get back home. It was frikkin gorgeous!
Opened in 1977, at the turn of the millennium Ocean Park experienced a major crisis and almost closed. Nevertheless, the board managed to attract new investors, work out a detailed development plan - and a decade later the park entered the world's top ten theme parks in terms of annual attendance.
A true gem of Hong Kong, Victoria Harbour has played a vital role in the city's development as a major shopping center. Today, the bay is well known for its scenic views from almost anywhere along the coast, and is considered a major tourist attraction in Hong Kong.
I really don't know why it has so low points. But about half of the things here seems to be really random. Nice place for a walk, especially after dark when the city lights come on.
Views of what? High rises? NYC was neat too but it's mostly a lot of tall buildings.
Absolutely filthy, for a start. Hong Kong went downhill very rapidly when it migrated from Britain to China. Would not go back there, ever.

To qualify for something serious, a study must include at least a transparent, scientifically based methodology for calculations. After all, the authors here operate with rather subjective concepts - such as public approval.”
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, opened back in 1959, is well known for its numerous roller coasters. Importantly, here you can find several more special attractions for children under 9 years of age. The park's territory is also divided into several thematic zones, each with its own unique features.
There's a zoo in Kansas where you can pet kangaroos too. They are so soft!

I don't understand. The description here makes it sound great (and it is--I love both locations). So why the low score?
Lotte World in the Korean capital was opened in 1989, and six years later it was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest indoor amusement park on the planet. Here you can also find a museum, several cinemas, and the country's largest ice skating rink. And in addition, under the roof of Lotte World there is also the so-called “Magic Theater”, where you can watch performances by magicians.
I read a list of awards that are really for sale to the highest bidder. They charge most “honorees” a lot of money to be mentioned. I suppose being featured in the book is a great way to advertise your business, but that “book” makes money on each entry. They could make the the whole process more of a real honor and still make money by charging the one mentioned in the book each time they used the “honor” in advertising and make just as much money. A Some of the facts, like worlds biggest dog, are true, and they’re fun.
Temple complex Inari - the deity of abundance, rice, foxes and success in Shintoism, Japanese traditional religion. The oldest buildings date back to 711, and in the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a famous military and political figure in Japan, ordered the construction of a beautiful two-story gate at the entrance to the sanctuary.
Absolutely beautiful place. I guess the rating is suffering from the fact that it's also very crowded with other tourists. Kyoto has an over tourism problem on the whole so try to go off season if you're going and try to visit the sights at a less popular time and day. Also just accept that there will be other people and try to coexist. You are all there for similar reasons after all.
Agree completely. The attraction as such is beautiful, impressive, and easily fills half a day, as it is built into the mountainside and visiting the entire complex requires an actual mountain hike, complete with ascending stars and enjoying the vista below at regular intervals. We went in late October, and while it was quite well-visited, it was by no means overcrowded. As a site and experience, this is neither overrated nor underwhelming.
Load More Replies..."The Worst Tourist Attractions" 1. NOT BUILT TO ATTRACT TOURISTS.2. WAT'S WRONG WITH IT??
Fushimi Inari is stunning, I can only guess the rating is because of the crowds - you do have to be up extremely early to beat the crowds. However, as I'll always say regarding Fushimi Inari, if you're willing to take a short hike , going up the mountain will reward you with stunning views and serenity away from the major crowds at the base of the shrine.
"In other words, if a person came with their family to a national park for a weekend, and along the way, let's say say, they had a fight with someone at a gas station or they just had a headache - it is likely that this will affect the quality of the review. At least the perception of time spent in the park will highly likely be completely different. This also needs to be taken into account. And let's just look at the three lowest rated places on this list. Is the Taj Mahal no longer an architectural masterpiece, don't you really want to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame if you are in Los Angeles? Of course no. So this, it seems to me, is a very interesting rating, looking educational - but nothing more,” Valery summarizes.
One of San Francisco's top tourist attractions. In addition to many restaurants and entertainment venues, you can also see the city marine aquarium here, and there is also a traditional sea lion rookery located nearby. The area is also home to many of the city's holiday events, including the spectacular fireworks display for Independence Day.
Apart from the sea-lions and the ferries I'm baffled as why people visit. I mean I did as a tourist but once I realised it was just tat shops and c**p expensive resturants I left.
I go there to look at the tourists. It baffles the mind.

Went there several times (because our hotel was nearby). Throughly unimpressed.
There are some good restaurants here but why visit SF and spend time at a tourist trap of a pier? There are so many better things to see and do here.
I got terrible food poisoning from eating crab at Pier 39. By the time we got to Ripley's Believe It or Not, I started feeling pretty bad. By the time we got back to the hotel, we'll, let's just say I haven't eaten seafood since. That was almost 25 years ago.
Located in the old part of Istanbul, the Grand Bazaar is one of the largest covered markets in the world. There are more than 400 different shops on the 66 streets of the Grand Bazaar, and almost half a million shoppers and tourists come here every day. And then the tourists, thanks to the incomparable skill of local sellers, also become shoppers...
An amazing place with many of the older shops actually dug into the walls of the Bazaar. Went there several years ago with my brother, who was the UK military attache in Turkey at the time, and had a splendid time. I was amazed by the versatility of the shopkeepers language skills - in my case I was approached by a seller who , in 5 minutes put his sales pitch to 10 / 15 different people in languages as diverse as English, Japanese, German, russian, French and Italian ; for context, my brother, who speaks fluent Turkish, was having his Rolex repaired in the back workshop (which btw, was never locked) and gave me a rolling commentary on the guys sales pitch.
We went frequently in the early 1970’s. It was helpful to have someone show us around the first few times. You need to get off the major pathways and find the speciality shapes and restaurants.
Load More Replies...I have Istanbul on my bucket list. I've been, but I was a kid then and didn't really get to experience it the way I would love to as an adult. :)
Interesting, but overcrowded and expensive, even if you are a good negotiator. After 60% discount, what I wanted to buy was still more expensive than in Montreal (and I'm talking about identical or similar items). Gold used to be cheap, now you can find better stuff at Costco for the same (or slightly higher price), but at least you have the certitude you buy real gold, plus you can always return it if you don't like it.
The largest architectural monument in the world, the only structure made by human hands, which, with good visibility, can be seen from earth’s orbit with the naked eye. One of the main symbols of China and a constant magnet for any tourist heading to this country.
Eh I can see why some people would get there and be like "Well this is nice, it's a long wall :,)". It's the history. The amount of people unalived to build the dang wall for protection against the Mongols and a lot of other nomadic groups.
There's a lot of other man-made structures that can be seen from space for more easily than this one, and this myth is really old at this point
So much nope. The Great Wall is amazing and I would love to go back and do the camping trek along it. I was grumpy that Forbidden City was on the list but now I'm just mad. I will say that I am fortunate you have gone to a section of the wall where there were very few people. If it was a busier area I could see how my experience would be different.
Loved walking it - amazing feat to construct. The beginning is crowded and then it lightens and it is very pleasant.
Be that as it may, it's always interesting to see which iconic landmarks around the world are included in similar lists of the lowest-rated sites. Even if you have not been to any of them, and if you have, then there's an opportunity to compare your own impressions with the rating presented. For example, I've been to two of the fifteen places that are on this list - and I still liked them. And what about you?
