And they are like, “riiiiight, sent around the world to everyone with a magic portal.” That’s what they are laughing about.
Load More Replies...I will always love these series of photographs. I think we have this notion that Victorians were stern and grim, however, photographs like this breathe life into these people.
Love this even though it doesn't fit in 20th century post. Most early photos are of unsmiling, grim looking folks.
In part because originally it took so long to expose a picture. Holding a genuine smile for 5 minutes is hard. Holding a forced grin looks weird. Holding a grim, unsmiling expression is easy - RBF, Victorian style. These photos must have been taken at a time when the exposure took only a second or two, otherwise you'd just have had a blur when they lost composure
Load More Replies...Ah, what a delightful glimpse into the past you've provided, capturing the essence of a bygone era. The stiff formality of Victorian society juxtaposed with the charming mirth of this couple is a testament to the enduring human spirit. In those moments immortalized in sepia tones, we witness the universal joy of shared laughter, transcending the constraints of time and circumstance. How splendid it is to imagine this couple, in their ornate attire, suppressing laughter as they sat for their portraits, creating a timeless memory that continues to bring smiles even today.
I have a photograph of my maternal great-parents in which both are convulsed with laughter. It was probably taken in the late 1800s, and my great-grandmother is wearing a perfectly enormous hat. It makes me smile every time I look at it.
In 1922, A Group Of Scientists Went To The Toronto General Hospital Where Diabetic Children Were Kept In Wards, Often 50 Or More At A Time. Most Of Them Were Comatose And Dying From Diabetic Keto-Acidosis. Others Were Being Treated By Being Placed On An Extremely Strict Diet, Which Inevitably LED To Starvation. These Children Were Essentially In Their Death Beds, Awaiting What Was At That Time, Certain Death. The Scientists Moved Swiftly And Proceeded To Inject The Children With A New Purified Extract Of Insulin. As They Began To Inject The Last Comatose Child, The First One To Be Injected Began To Wake Up. Then One By One, All The Children Awoke From Their Diabetic Comas. A Room That Was Full Of Death And Gloom, Suddenly Became A Place Of Joy And Hope. In The Early 1920s, Frederick Banting And Charles Best Discovered Insulin Under John Macleod At The University Of Toronto. With The Help Of James Collip, Insulin Was Purified, Making It Available To Successfully Treat Diabetes. Both Banting And Macleod Earned Nobel Prizes For Their Work In 1923. In The Same Year, Banting, Collip, And Best Decided To Sell The Insulin Patent To The University Of Toronto For $1. Banting Famously Went On To Say, “Insulin Does Not Belong To Me, It Belongs To The World.”

During Military Training In Ww2, Gilbert Bradley Was In Love And Exchanged Hundreds Of Letters With His Sweetheart Who Would Only Sign The Letters With The Initial "G". 70 Years Later, When The Letters Were Transcribed, It Was Discovered That G Actually Stood For Gordon. Gilbert Had Been In Love With A Man. They Had To Keep Their Relationship A Secret Because Homosexuality Was Illegal At The Time And A Soldier Could Get Even Get Shot For Engaging In Homosexual Behavior. In One Of Their Letters Contained The Lines: "Wouldn't It Be Wonderful If All Our Letters Could Be Published In The Future In A More Enlightened Time. Then All The World Could See How In Love We Are."
This is heartachingly sad. Sadly, there are still hate-filled people in this day and age who want to deny LTGBTQIA+ people their rights.
Please stop the first cap for each word. Makes it harder to read (for me), not easier
I think the Bored Panda app adds the capital letters automatically. If you look through the site, you'll see that all of the first letters of each word in the large bold-font titles are always capitalized. BP's style code seems to have mistakenly used the capital case in the text area as well as title area on this page, which means some web developer forgot to close a style tag somewhere. Lol!
Load More Replies...Ah, the poignant and clandestine love story of Gilbert and Gordon, concealed within the pages of history, serves as a testament to the enduring power of love amidst the shadows of adversity. Their letters, exchanged in a time when the world was far less tolerant, embody the courage and resilience required to love freely. The heartfelt longing expressed in the line, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all our letters could be published in the future in a more enlightened time. Then all the world could see how in love we are,” reflects the desire for a world where love could be celebrated openly and without fear.
Love is for everyone, I am so happy that times are changing for the better
I wish they were. But are they really? In some places yes… but it seems „good times“ just shift location/country. Just look what the situation for women was like 70 years ago in Persia (Iran), compared to now. And marriages between French and German (very common in Alsace-Lorraine) were a sure reason to be discriminated during WWs. Now it’s not worth to be mentioned, as these countries are united within Europe. But what about long time AND fresh marriages between Ukrainians and Russians? Which is also very common. They are, all of a sudden, being discriminated by own family members. I don’t think this issues are changing for the better. They just shift, come in waves of „good/better“ and „bad/worse“. Sadly. 😢 I was born into a very diverse, big family spread around all continents - my siblings, most of my cousins and I have dual nationality. The thought our politicians would start a war, where we would have to choose on what side of the country we stand, would kill our soul and heart.

Ah, the iconic moment in history when Jesse Owens, the US athlete, saluted during the presentation of his gold medal for the long jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Owens' triumph not only showcased his remarkable athletic prowess but also stood as a powerful symbol of defiance against the backdrop of Nazi Germany's regime. His victory challenged racial prejudices and transcended borders, illustrating that true champions rise above the constraints of politics and bigotry to inspire the world with their talent and courage.
It's too bad that that salute on the right became known as the Nazi salute. Before that era, it was just a generic salute. Even Americans used it during the pledge of allegiance.
Cats That Sailed On Ships Until The Mid-20th Century To Catch Rodents Had Passports Signed With Their Paw Prints
The practice of cats sailing on ships to control rodent populations is a fascinating historical tidbit. Cats, valued for their role in keeping ships' holds free of rats and mice, were often considered part of the crew. While the notion of cats having passports may be more whimsical than factual, it reflects the deep bond that existed between sailors and their feline companions. These feline shipmates were essential for maintaining the integrity of food stores and equipment during long sea voyages, earning their place in maritime history.

Recent advances in technology mean that many of us have a smartphone with a powerful camera sitting in our pockets. This has made photography a very approachable form of art, when compared to two centuries ago.
However, despite this, some photographers—professionals and amateurs alike—still choose to take pictures the ‘old-fashioned’ way, with film.
Insane To Think Charles Darwin And Steve Irwin Both Owned The Same Turtoise
Apparently not, but it was a close thing. Apparently London zoo didn't know which of three giant tortoises belonged to Darwin at the time that one was sent to Australia. PS, it was already an adult when Darwin picked it up.
You don't own living things, you're responsible for them. Like small humans
I met a 150+ year old giant tortoise when I was a kid. Sadly, I don't remember where I was, who it was, or the circumstances but I remember the tortoise.
It's a curious and remarkable connection, albeit one that doesn't quite align with historical timelines. Charles Darwin, the renowned naturalist, and Steve Irwin, the beloved wildlife enthusiast, lived in different eras. Darwin passed away in 1882, while Steve Irwin was born in 1962. It's highly unlikely that they owned the same tortoise. Nevertheless, both individuals made significant contributions to our understanding and appreciation of the natural world in their respective ways.
Since these tortoises can live for well over 200 years it is absolutely feasible that both men could have "owned" the animal.

No matter how impressive a historical photo might be, nobody should believe everything that they see blindly. It helps to have a healthy dose of skepticism. Some people manipulate photos for personal or political gain, others might want to make certain theories seem more reliable. The more important a news story or historical event, the more likely it is that someone might want their biased opinions to seem mainstream.

USA, Nevada, 1977. Wild Horses
FYI the BLM is doing helicopter roundups and those horses, nowadays, tend to end up in the slaughter trucks because ranchers, who through welfare apparently aren't making enough on cattle, will flip horses to the kill buyers. Call your congressional rep and ask them to stop
Wild horses are protected in Nevada since the early 70's. Horses do not have enough value to your imaginary 'kill buyers' to make it worth the risk. BLM does round them up when they are on private land and relocate them. they do NOT kill them. I will admit, BLM is not living up to their 'management plan' but outright killing them is a fabrication.
Load More Replies...In reality they are feral horses as horses aren't native to north America they where introduced here by the Spanish.
Most people in the US are of the opinion that wild horses are vermin and all of them need to be brutally rounded up by helicopter and killed off after a horrible trip to Canada or Mexico. These roundups are non-selective, it includes the entire band, from stallion over pregnant mares and foals. Foals are born in the panic of a roundup and trampled to death. They are born in the muck of the kill pens. They are left there to be starved, because their mums are going on these transports to be slaughtered and the foals have no value. All of this, because their space is needed for cattle, because there still is not enough meat available in the supermarkets, despite of thousands of tons binned every day. One should think that the US would be proud and thankful and protect the descendants of the horses which made the US great. Instead the goal is to kill them off as brutal as possible. A nation applauding cruelty to innocent animals is a sad one.

Freuchen Went On To Participate In Several Arctic Explorations, One Including A 1,000 Mile Dogsled Trip Across Greenland. Freuchen Also Wrote More Than A Dozen Books (Fiction And Non-Fiction), Participated In The Danish Resistance Against Germany During World War 2 And Was Imprisoned By The Nazis And Sentenced To Death, But Managed To Escape To Sweden. He Eventually Came To Hollywood And Worked As A Consultant And Scriptwriter, But Also Starred In The Oscar Winning Movie "Eskimo" (1933). In 1956, He Won $64,000 On "The $64,000 Question", An American Quiz Show. But Perhaps His Most Famous Feat Was Barely Escaping Death When He Once Got Trapped In A Snow Cave Due To The Warmth Generated By His Own Breath, Which Created An Impassable Frozen Crust That Blocked The Entrance. He Writes About The Experience In One Of His Memoirs: “What A Way To Die…i Gave Up Once More And Let The Hours Pass Without Another Move. But I Recovered My Strength While I Rested And My Morale Improved. I Was Alive After All. I Had Not Eaten For Hours, But My Digestion Felt All Right. I Got A New Idea! I Had Often Seen Dog’s Dung In The Sled Track And Had Noticed That It Would Freeze As Solid As A Rock. Would Not The Cold Have The Same Effect On Human Discharge? Repulsive As The Thought Was, I Decided To Try The Experiment. I Moved My Bowels And From The Excrement I Managed To Fashion A Chisel-Like Instrument Which I Left To Freeze…i Was Patient. I Did Not Want To Risk Breaking My New Tool By Using It Too Soon…at Last I Decided To Try My Chisel And It Worked!” While He Managed To Escape, He Was Forced To Amputate Several Of His Toes And Eventually Lost His Left Foot Entirely To Frostbite. In 1957, Freuchen Died Of A Heart Attack

Soper Even Told Her That He Would Write A Book And Give Her All The Royalties. She Still Refused. They aren't. What is most effectively used today is giving the chickens enough bloody room to move, keeping the temperature and airflow good, and giving each hen its own laying box. If it occurs, then removing the injured chickens for treatment, perhaps using an anti-cannibalism spray (masks the smell of the blood and stress hormones), and identifying and correcting the actual cause.

LSD was legal until Fall of 1966. Some say the hippie movement was initiated by the CIA by testing it on civilian guinea pigs. Ken Kesey(who wrote One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) was one of those, and he started the Acid tests with his band of Merry Pranksters.
What was considered the failure standard when 'experimenting' with all those drugs ??

I used to play a computer game where I thought it'd be fun to just say mine, mine, mine all the time when I was at the market place which was where you could interact with others. I kept getting messages from people somewhere in Eastern Europe, I think it was. Turns out that "mine" was a way to say hello in that specific language? I was so confused (and so were they, I think)

I had to stop after a half dozen or so. I know that the first letter of most words should be capitalized in titles, but who thought it was a good idea to capitalize the first letter of every stinking word in the stories?
I think it's pretty clear that we have found a universal pet peeve. Challenge: Send Texts To People You Don't Like With Each Word Capitalized - And Make It A Long Text Because The Longer It Is, The Worse It Is To Have To Get Through It - So Make Sure That It Is Important Information So They Have To Read It
