In part because originally it took so long to expose a picture. Holding a genuine smile for 5 minutes is hard. Holding a forced grin looks weird. Holding a grim, unsmiling expression is easy - RBF, Victorian style. These photos must have been taken at a time when the exposure took only a second or two, otherwise you'd just have had a blur when they lost composure

Ah, what a delightful glimpse into the past you've provided, capturing the essence of a bygone era. The stiff formality of Victorian society juxtaposed with the charming mirth of this couple is a testament to the enduring human spirit. In those moments immortalized in sepia tones, we witness the universal joy of shared laughter, transcending the constraints of time and circumstance. How splendid it is to imagine this couple, in their ornate attire, suppressing laughter as they sat for their portraits, creating a timeless memory that continues to bring smiles even today.

I have a photograph of my maternal great-parents in which both are convulsed with laughter. It was probably taken in the late 1800s, and my great-grandmother is wearing a perfectly enormous hat. It makes me smile every time I look at it.

In 1922, A Group Of Scientists Went To The Toronto General Hospital Where Diabetic Children Were Kept In Wards, Often 50 Or More At A Time. Most Of Them Were Comatose And Dying From Diabetic Keto-Acidosis. Others Were Being Treated By Being Placed On An Extremely Strict Diet, Which Inevitably LED To Starvation. These Children Were Essentially In Their Death Beds, Awaiting What Was At That Time, Certain Death. The Scientists Moved Swiftly And Proceeded To Inject The Children With A New Purified Extract Of Insulin. As They Began To Inject The Last Comatose Child, The First One To Be Injected Began To Wake Up. Then One By One, All The Children Awoke From Their Diabetic Comas. A Room That Was Full Of Death And Gloom, Suddenly Became A Place Of Joy And Hope. In The Early 1920s, Frederick Banting And Charles Best Discovered Insulin Under John Macleod At The University Of Toronto. With The Help Of James Collip, Insulin Was Purified, Making It Available To Successfully Treat Diabetes. Both Banting And Macleod Earned Nobel Prizes For Their Work In 1923. In The Same Year, Banting, Collip, And Best Decided To Sell The Insulin Patent To The University Of Toronto For $1. Banting Famously Went On To Say, “Insulin Does Not Belong To Me, It Belongs To The World.”

I think the Bored Panda app adds the capital letters automatically. If you look through the site, you'll see that all of the first letters of each word in the large bold-font titles are always capitalized. BP's style code seems to have mistakenly used the capital case in the text area as well as title area on this page, which means some web developer forgot to close a style tag somewhere. Lol!

Ah, the poignant and clandestine love story of Gilbert and Gordon, concealed within the pages of history, serves as a testament to the enduring power of love amidst the shadows of adversity. Their letters, exchanged in a time when the world was far less tolerant, embody the courage and resilience required to love freely. The heartfelt longing expressed in the line, “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if all our letters could be published in the future in a more enlightened time. Then all the world could see how in love we are,” reflects the desire for a world where love could be celebrated openly and without fear.

I wish they were. But are they really? In some places yes… but it seems „good times“ just shift location/country. Just look what the situation for women was like 70 years ago in Persia (Iran), compared to now. And marriages between French and German (very common in Alsace-Lorraine) were a sure reason to be discriminated during WWs. Now it’s not worth to be mentioned, as these countries are united within Europe. But what about long time AND fresh marriages between Ukrainians and Russians? Which is also very common. They are, all of a sudden, being discriminated by own family members. I don’t think this issues are changing for the better. They just shift, come in waves of „good/better“ and „bad/worse“. Sadly. 😢 I was born into a very diverse, big family spread around all continents - my siblings, most of my cousins and I have dual nationality. The thought our politicians would start a war, where we would have to choose on what side of the country we stand, would kill our soul and heart.

Jesse Owens and Luz Long became firm friends, and corresponded for years. Long was wounded in Sicily in WW2, and died in hospital there. In his last letter to Owens In his last letter, he asked Owens to contact his son Karl. “I want you to tell him how things were in other times, when war didn’t separate us; I mean, to know how different things can be between men,” he concluded. And not only did Owens comply with the request, but he co-starred with the son of his rival-friend in the beautiful documentary Jesse Owens returns to Berlin.

Ah, the iconic moment in history when Jesse Owens, the US athlete, saluted during the presentation of his gold medal for the long jump at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Owens' triumph not only showcased his remarkable athletic prowess but also stood as a powerful symbol of defiance against the backdrop of Nazi Germany's regime. His victory challenged racial prejudices and transcended borders, illustrating that true champions rise above the constraints of politics and bigotry to inspire the world with their talent and courage.

It's too bad that that salute on the right became known as the Nazi salute. Before that era, it was just a generic salute. Even Americans used it during the pledge of allegiance.

The practice of cats sailing on ships to control rodent populations is a fascinating historical tidbit. Cats, valued for their role in keeping ships' holds free of rats and mice, were often considered part of the crew. While the notion of cats having passports may be more whimsical than factual, it reflects the deep bond that existed between sailors and their feline companions. These feline shipmates were essential for maintaining the integrity of food stores and equipment during long sea voyages, earning their place in maritime history.

Indeed, Robbie Coltrane's portrayal of Hagrid in the beloved Harry Potter series left an indelible mark on the hearts of fans worldwide. His talent and warmth brought the character to life in a way that will be cherished for generations to come. While the sentiment expressed is heartfelt, as of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Robbie Coltrane was still alive. Let us continue to celebrate his contribution to the magical world of Harry Potter, wishing him health and happiness in the years to come.

Recent advances in technology mean that many of us have a smartphone with a powerful camera sitting in our pockets. This has made photography a very approachable form of art, when compared to two centuries ago.

However, despite this, some photographers—professionals and amateurs alike—still choose to take pictures the ‘old-fashioned’ way, with film.

Apparently not, but it was a close thing. Apparently London zoo didn't know which of three giant tortoises belonged to Darwin at the time that one was sent to Australia. PS, it was already an adult when Darwin picked it up.

It's a curious and remarkable connection, albeit one that doesn't quite align with historical timelines. Charles Darwin, the renowned naturalist, and Steve Irwin, the beloved wildlife enthusiast, lived in different eras. Darwin passed away in 1882, while Steve Irwin was born in 1962. It's highly unlikely that they owned the same tortoise. Nevertheless, both individuals made significant contributions to our understanding and appreciation of the natural world in their respective ways.

Since these tortoises can live for well over 200 years it is absolutely feasible that both men could have "owned" the animal.

I used to be part of the exotic animal scene years ago, we had reptiles. But we knew people with pets that were really uncommon, especially here in the UK. One day we were at a meeting where people bring pets to show and educate others. Someone bought in pet skunks, I was terrified about them expressing, but as they had been domesticated it was not an issue as they spray as a defence mechanism. Years before meeting these skunks an owner in the UK could get their scent glands removed but last thing I knew it had been made illegal.

By using my bicycle (disc-) brakes, if I engage them just so slightly that I can still move the wheel, they make a very goosesque noise. We recorded that, copied and combined a few screeches to some minutes of frightening guard goose antics. I hope it's still around somewhere, it's been 10 years and said friend isn't among us living anymore.

He was a bit more than a "promising cadet" though, wasn't he - son of the exiled Greek king and a distant-ish cousin of Elizabeth's.

No matter how impressive a historical photo might be, nobody should believe everything that they see blindly. It helps to have a healthy dose of skepticism. Some people manipulate photos for personal or political gain, others might want to make certain theories seem more reliable. The more important a news story or historical event, the more likely it is that someone might want their biased opinions to seem mainstream.

‘Deutsche Welle’ suggests checking the origin of the image before resharing it. You can use reverse image search tools for this if you suspect that a photo might have been tampered with.

There are also various tools available to check whether an image has been altered by looking at differences in pixel density. Of course, no online tool or program is perfect, but they’re better than nothing.

FYI the BLM is doing helicopter roundups and those horses, nowadays, tend to end up in the slaughter trucks because ranchers, who through welfare apparently aren't making enough on cattle, will flip horses to the kill buyers. Call your congressional rep and ask them to stop

Wild horses are protected in Nevada since the early 70's. Horses do not have enough value to your imaginary 'kill buyers' to make it worth the risk. BLM does round them up when they are on private land and relocate them. they do NOT kill them. I will admit, BLM is not living up to their 'management plan' but outright killing them is a fabrication.

Most people in the US are of the opinion that wild horses are vermin and all of them need to be brutally rounded up by helicopter and killed off after a horrible trip to Canada or Mexico. These roundups are non-selective, it includes the entire band, from stallion over pregnant mares and foals. Foals are born in the panic of a roundup and trampled to death. They are born in the muck of the kill pens. They are left there to be starved, because their mums are going on these transports to be slaughtered and the foals have no value. All of this, because their space is needed for cattle, because there still is not enough meat available in the supermarkets, despite of thousands of tons binned every day. One should think that the US would be proud and thankful and protect the descendants of the horses which made the US great. Instead the goal is to kill them off as brutal as possible. A nation applauding cruelty to innocent animals is a sad one.

A V-Shaped Bed Invented In 1932, Supporting The Body Perfectly At Every Point And Thus Promotes Better Rest. When Unused The Bed Is Straight Like Every Other Bed. However, One Pull On A Chain At The Side Of The Bed Immediately Changes It To A V-Shape. Another Advantage Claimed For The Bed Is That The Covers Are Held Substantially Away From The Person, Thereby Allowing The Free Circulation Of Air To The Body

See, bans only lead to criminality. Regulations, education, and other stuff is probably the way to go. Just like sex education, abstinence works so great does it? And no one knows how periods work or how to protect yourself during consensual intercourse.

Yes, your body goes into "starvation mode" and tries to hang onto every last calorie by slowing your metabolism, which worsens the ability to lose weight.

Danish Arctic Explorer Peter Freuchen With His First Wife, Navarana Mequpaluk In 1912. She Would Pass Away From The Spanish Flu In 1921.⁣ ⁣ Freuchen Went On To Participate In Several Arctic Explorations, One Including A 1,000 Mile Dogsled Trip Across Greenland. Freuchen Also Wrote More Than A Dozen Books (Fiction And Non-Fiction), Participated In The Danish Resistance Against Germany During World War 2 And Was Imprisoned By The Nazis And Sentenced To Death, But Managed To Escape To Sweden. He Eventually Came To Hollywood And Worked As A Consultant And Scriptwriter, But Also Starred In The Oscar Winning Movie "Eskimo" (1933). In 1956, He Won $64,000 On "The $64,000 Question", An American Quiz Show.⁣ ⁣ But Perhaps His Most Famous Feat Was Barely Escaping Death When He Once Got Trapped In A Snow Cave Due To The Warmth Generated By His Own Breath, Which Created An Impassable Frozen Crust That Blocked The Entrance.⁣ ⁣ He Writes About The Experience In One Of His Memoirs: “What A Way To Die…i Gave Up Once More And Let The Hours Pass Without Another Move. But I Recovered My Strength While I Rested And My Morale Improved. I Was Alive After All. I Had Not Eaten For Hours, But My Digestion Felt All Right. I Got A New Idea! I Had Often Seen Dog’s Dung In The Sled Track And Had Noticed That It Would Freeze As Solid As A Rock. Would Not The Cold Have The Same Effect On Human Discharge? Repulsive As The Thought Was, I Decided To Try The Experiment. I Moved My Bowels And From The Excrement I Managed To Fashion A Chisel-Like Instrument Which I Left To Freeze…i Was Patient. I Did Not Want To Risk Breaking My New Tool By Using It Too Soon…at Last I Decided To Try My Chisel And It Worked!”⁣ ⁣ While He Managed To Escape, He Was Forced To Amputate Several Of His Toes And Eventually Lost His Left Foot Entirely To Frostbite.⁣ ⁣ In 1957, Freuchen Died Of A Heart Attack

Wow, look at all that diversity! Some of the white guys don't have facial hair! And some have a pocket kerchief instead of a boutonniere! I think some even parted their hair on the right side!!!

I was on a tour in Hawaii & a Hawaiian religion chaplain was telling us about the Hawaiian culture. How they used to conquer their enemies & then eat them. Then the Christian missionaries showed up. And we ate them too.

My family followed this Martial Law crisis and what happened with it from Britain as we still had people over there. Well done, Marxists. Slightly irritating later down the line on debate forums but I did have more fun debunking all the little communists when they'd gaslight me about their favourite little range of regimes and dogma. Trouble is, the kids don't know and they often would come on with the same old lies. Sad. But anyway, disgusting situation all round.

I had been in Gdynia twice in the decade of 70s with a ship. There was black market of US dollar. Common occurrence in all ports of marxist countries (also in some non-marxist but poor countries like Brazil, Chile, etc). During the previous decades there was exchange of certain "services" with lady's stockings or jean pants. What a shame for the"paradise of the laborers".

This Is Mary Mallon, Aka Typhoid Mary, Photographed After Being Institutionalised On North Brother Island In New York, 1909. She Is The First Recorded Asymptomatic Carrier Of Typhoid, A Bacterial Infection That Is Spread By Eating Food Or Drinking Water That Has Been Contaminated With The Feces Of An Infected Person. Mallon Worked As A Cook In New York City From 1900 To 1907. During This Time, She Infected 51 People. One Family Hired A Typhoid Researcher By The Name Of George Soper Who Believed Mallon Was The Reason For The Outbreaks. He Was Able To Finally Track Her Down And Notified Her That She May Be Unknowingly Spreading The Disease. When He Asked If He Could Collect Her Urine And Stool Samples, Mallon Refused. Soper Even Told Her That He Would Write A Book And Give Her All The Royalties. She Still Refused. In 1907, Mallon Was Forced Into Quarantine At A Hospital On North Brother Island In New York, Located On The East River Between The Bronx And Rikers Island. In 1910, She Was Released Under The Condition That She Change Her Occupation. Upon Her Release, Mallon Began Working As A Laundress Which Paid Less Than Cooking. She Did That For Several Years Until She Decided To Change Her Name To Mary Brown And Go Into Cooking Again. In 1915, She Started A Massive Outbreak At Sloane Hospital For Women That Infected 25 People And Killed Two. She Was Caught By Authorities And Imprisoned For The Rest Of Her Life

I'm glad she knew her to be husband for a while before marriage, I was afraid she just grabbed the man she met taller than her. A lot of women find that to be important.

I know people who worked at Buckingham Palace and within the Royal household and without exception, they found her to be a foul mouthed, spoilt, entitled, rude and downright nasty individual ; many of them flat refused to work on her staff and at least two actually left because they were given a fete accompli.

🎶 “One night it hit me. When drinking whiskey. I knew exactly what I had to do. I wrote this love song. It didn’t take long. Because my love for the man is so true. Those who know me understand. I’ve really only loved just one man.* (* + son Adam) Been in love since ‘73 with a man who’s never laid eyes on me. It doesn’t matter, I love Mick Jagger, I love him ceaselessly, endlessly, relentlessly. I wrote this song for him, to Mick with love from Kim. This is a love song to Mick Jagger from me.” 🎶 - I wrote this and had to share I never had the slightest opportunity anywhere else and only one person has ever heard me sing it! If you read this thanks for indulging me! Lol.

It doesn't happen in a vacuum though, there are more factors involved than just "injured chicken". Finding and addressing those other factors greatly reduces the chance of chicken cannibalism.

They aren't. What is most effectively used today is giving the chickens enough bloody room to move, keeping the temperature and airflow good, and giving each hen its own laying box. If it occurs, then removing the injured chickens for treatment, perhaps using an anti-cannibalism spray (masks the smell of the blood and stress hormones), and identifying and correcting the actual cause.

LSD was legal until Fall of 1966. Some say the hippie movement was initiated by the CIA by testing it on civilian guinea pigs. Ken Kesey(who wrote One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) was one of those, and he started the Acid tests with his band of Merry Pranksters.
