This Homeless Woman Explained Why People Should Stop Donating To The Salvation Army

According to their 2017 financial report, The Salvation Army–USA received over $2 billion from direct public support that year. Heather Snow, a homeless woman who had been living in one of their facilities, however, said nobody should donate a single penny to them ever again. She shared an emotional twitter rant about the ‘abusive’ experience she and other women were having in one of Salvation Army’s centers in Portland, saying the sole purpose of the organization is to make a profit (in 2017, it reported a surplus of $622M). The thread ignited a discussion where others responded that one rotten apple doesn’t mean the entire tree is bad. Scroll down to read the debate and leave your opinion in the comments!

As a sister if a captain of the Salvation Army, I can tell you exactly where their money goes. As a captain, my sister is given a home, rent free, fully furnished. If she dislikes the curtains, carpet, kitchen table, whatever, she has it replaced by them free of charge. That goes for all captains. That is where your money is going. I gave up donating to them a long time ago, and instead donate to a charity that provides books and clothes to school children.

Had some furniture my boys had outgrown still in very good condition. I called the S A to donate it thinking it would be given to a needy family. Two scruffy men in a S A truck arrive and refuse to accept it because it was only pine timber and quote " we don't get a good price for pine furniture". i found a nearby church in the phone book and they were glad to accept it for a needy parishioner.

Had the same experience with a wardrobe I was trying to donate. It had a tiny water stain ON THE BACK and so the SA wouldn't take it.

As in every institution there will be people working for the Salvation Army who really shouldn't be allowed to even enter the premisses. And they should be fired or re-educated. Denying that this problem exists doesn't serve the Salvation Army. I'm sure that the Salvation Army has people who really want to help people in need and I'm sure it's the majority of their employees. So why not investigate the accusations and take appropriate action? Throwing the woman out makes the Salvation Army look suspicious and untrustworthy.

I never, ever donate to religious charities. I used to...but after about the third time I had a volunteer scream abuse at me and threaten to hit me for not packaging donations "correctly", I decided that no one needs to listen to that c**p. Everything I donate goes to Goodwill now.

You do realize Goodwill is a FOR PROFIT organization. You donate, they sell, they keep All the money. It's not a charity. None of their profits go to help others. Look it up.

Sadly I had a very bad experience myself. I had to flee an abusive relationship and I had no where else to turn. I did have a job but no money to rent a place. No one else who stayed there had a job. Some of the men in the shelter would refer to the females in very obscene terms. After work, I would come in and volunteer to help with resumes, interview practice, new admissions, etc. I was trying so hard to be helpful. The manager, a Pastor, called me into his office and told me I had to be a bell ringer full time. I reminded him I had a job, but I would gladly work 12 hour shifts on weekends. Next morning, I was told to pack my things and leave. I spent the next few weeks living in my car in the coldest part of the year! Merry Christmas. I wound up renting a room for $125 a week in a little rooming house. On bad days, I can still hear those men screaming obscene words at me. And the irony of the only employed resident being tossed out still amazes me.

I stayed at the SA too, and had very negative experiences with them. I constantly got in trouble mind you I didn't do anything wrong. It was valuable lesson though this place taught me how to tell people whatever they wanted to hear and in my head I said f**k off.

I can’t speak for all of the Salvation Army, but I do know of one good member. It was in Australia and there was a door knock to raise money. My mother answered the door and said she’d donate if she could but we had no money. The officer reached into his pocket, pulled out his wallet and gave my mother $20. She cried. Little did he know we didn’t have any food and his $20 fed us for several days. That was Christianity in action.

CONTINUED - ungrateful along with the threat of eviction. I walked out; there was no way I would allow my kids to eat that ptomaine poisoning waiting to happen bacteria laden slop. I didn’t have much money, but enough to manage a little packaged coffeecake to split with my kids down at the 7-11 on the corner. I felt fortunate I didn’t have to subject them to meals of rotten garbage unlike many of the other mothers. Needless to say I went back to my abuser, at least we had a clean house and fresh food but because of the dirty shared pillows we all ended up with the worst case of conjunctivitis in the century. It took months to heal emotionally and physically and another year to leave to a real safe house. I will NEVER EVER donate, shop, support or have anything to do with the Salvation Army and I take every opportunity to tell people just what a horrible un-charitable organization they run.

CONTINUED pockets. Less than 3% of money actually found its way into the programs. A short time later I found myself and 2 children in desperate need of a safe house and because my abuser had an incredible knack for finding me I went to the Salvation Army in downtown San Diego about 40 miles south. What I discovered were the rudest self-absorbed condescending employees with holier than thou attitudes. We were placed in a room with 4 other mothers and children, 1 pillow provided per family, not per person, but 1 pillow per family and a single bed per family, regardless of how many people were in said family, many women with 5 and 6 kids. The downstairs cafeteria was marginally clean but the food was disgusting beyond belief. The bread was green with fuzzy mold and the lunch meat was green and pink-gray colored, extremely slimy and omitting the putrid stench of sulfur. I asked the cook why the food they were serving was moldy; I was openly scolded and chastised for being (CONTINUE)

Many years ago (1978 or 79) I was the executive secretary to the Director of North San Diego County Salvation Army, Oceanside. Our main function was to place women in safe houses and work with them rebuilding their lives with free classes and job referrals. The office was ground level with storefront windows and one day a lady walked in and handed me a $10 bill, asking me to put it toward helping an abused woman with children. The Director wasn’t in at the time so I held onto the cash until she returned 30 or so minutes later. After she settled into her office I went in, handed her the donation and explained where it had come from and to what was requested it be applied to. The director smiled, held out her hand, took the money, and as she stuck it into her purse said “Good, I needed gas money”. Part of my job was to solicit donations from local upscale vendors for charitable fundraisers. Contributors made sizeable grants and endowments which ended up in administrator and board me

I have not donated to the Salvation Army for years, especially after learning of their (at least alleged) homophobic practices. I'm sure that they do help some people, but it's the bad stuff you hear. I support a local shelter for LGBTQ teens who get thrown out of their homes when they "come out of the closet." I also volunteer at a local food bank.

As someone who has worked in human services serving the homeless and underprivileged for many years, I urge people not to make judgements about an entire organization based on anecdotes. By all means do your research on sites like CharityNavigator and reports/grades done by the city and other third parties. But as with any industry, people's individual experiences or incidents aren't necessarily representative of the entire organization and given the incidence of mental health and substance use disorders among the homeless population, some clients may not be the most accurate or complete storytellers.

My family spent Christmas 1981 in a women’s shelter. We left my father with only the clothes on our backs. The Salvation Army provided me and my siblings with 3 sets of clothes a piece and toys for Christmas Morning. When my mom moved us to a rent house they gave us beds and a couch and a kitchen table. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I always wonder about "plantation mentality." Would the people seeing nothing wrong with this treatment honestly be grateful for substandard housing, food, medical for themselves, or especially their children? I once had a nurse tell me "These Medicare patients should be grateful for what they can get" after she snapped, hard, at a patient for asking for help going to the bathroom. Where does this mind set come from?

I guess resentment that some people get goods or services or housing "for free" that the person making the comment has to pay for.

I met an older gal at a cafe in San Francisco. She lived in SA housing and was grateful. The SA showed up after a pretty serious fire at my apartment building in the Chicago suburbs. They fed us and put us up at local motels for 3 days ... when those of us who had livable spaces were allowed to return. I will continue to support them with gratitude and thanks.

Definitely agree with this sister's experience. Another woman was almost raped at the new bethlehem day center run in part by the salt house church in Kirkland, WA. Instead of helping her, they keep trying to sillence her. Instead of even bothering to find out what the attempted rapist looks like, they focus more on covering their rears. Jeff Bezos was right to give money to any place other than Seattle.

I dislike stories like this... As with just about everything in the world, there are always some that completely suck. I find it hard to believe, an organization as large as the SA, that there are zero caring people. It just seems like, instead of trying to fix a location, they want they entire organization to suffer, and I"m sure there are plenty of good people and places within the SA...

Regarding the thirty day suspension, in NYC, if a client leaves a rehab, the state will not fund care for that same patient at the same rehab until 30 days have passed. The client can get care at a different rehab, however. So it may be related to something like that.

Stop judging entire organizations based on a few experiences! Loud negative voices damage businesses and organizations. Do you know enough about the entire industry and individual organizations to make universal statements? Not all religious charities are bad, at the Methodist church in Provincetown, MA, things go out as fast as they come in. The fishing industry has collapsed, many commercial fishermen are suffering. The Women's Center on Newbury St in Boston is impressive. Clean, well supplied with cheerful staff and recipients. Started by nuns. Yes, there are some dreadful places as well. Aunt Messy, I am sorry you had several negative experiences at a religious charity. It has happened to many of us, I understand your feelings. But is it fair to criticize all religious groups? Find a place you can feel good about. Often it is one location. Not sure, talk to those you want to help. The homeless know what works. Distributing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches is a good start.

Check Charity Watch. Almost all religious charities give less than 3% of the money they take in to the programs they're supposed to be supporting. People to turn to St. Vincent for help must sign agreements to follow Catholic doctrine to the letter, including a pledge never to use birth control. ...///... NEVER give to a religious charity. You're wasting money.

There is always that one customer who can never be satisfied, is demanding, and is rude. This post is a reminder to not be that customer. A lock on the refrigerator door, in an institution helping those at the bottom of society? Seems quite reasonable to me. Reminds me of the psychiatrist who finally determined that her patients wasn't actually "ill" but rather that he simply had a "horrible personality" and that there was nothing medically wrong with her. All the "complaints/testimony" is from one person who may be as problematic as she seems. I recall the saying "How is it that everyone else is 'not ok' but somehow you, of all the people around you, are the only one who is OK."

This writer does not realize the expanse of where money has to be spread. This story does not sway me one bit. Locks on refrigerators well of course if they did not do that thing would be empty by morning. We all have had bad experiences even if it is a restaurant but it does not mean all restaurants are gonna serve you the same. The lady was just not compliant and wanted to raise a stink. The head of SA receives pennies compared to other organizations. I volunteered for a worldwide organization once. What a crock! you worried where your money is going? it is going in their pockets. Salvation Army is the best when donating this is a big country with a lot on their list.

I work for a charity and there is black, white and grey everywhere. 30% of our profits go to just dumping the rubbish people "donate", when they couldn't be bothered throwing it away or do not want to incur the relative fees at landfill. My only issue with the Salvos is that they have personal beliefs that are not commonly known to the public that donate to them. For instance, in my country, they are strict about witchcraft and alcohol, so your Harry Potter books/movies, Twilight merch, Jack Daniels shirts and anything else they do not agree with goes in the BIN, not to another charity. They do not advertise this on the front doors of their retail outlets, so these donations go to waste. My charity is happy to sell the entire Harry Potter series for $21, so give it to us, we can use them.

My experience with them has been entirely different. 10 years ago my apartment caught fire and I lost everything. The American Red Cross, another wonderful charity, gave me a clothes voucher, food vouchers, and a few nights stay in a motel. They showed up on scene along with the Salvation Army who offered to replace all my furniture. The Salvation Army also said they help pay my deposit in my new apartment and would help me with a motel if I needed to stay longer than the 3 days the Red Cross was offering.I had insurance so I didn’t need the furniture and since I was moving to a different unit in the same complex,I didn’t need money for a deposit. I ended up using them to stay additional time in the motel as that was all I needed. While I was there several other people were there requesting help on various bills such as their rent, light bill, and even car payments.Clearly they’re a wonderful organization who helps out with people in need, so I think the particular shelter is to blame

The Salvation Army is a bona fide church (that sponsors the stores/shelters.) When was the last time you walked in ANY church and found that everyone (including the clergy) was perfect?? Nobody is perfect. When a person is down and out, it's easy for them to be overly critical because their life situation is making them sensitive. I don't think it's fair to slam a church affiliated charity; if that's the case, then you might as well slam ALL Christian churches! BTW...MOST Protestant denominations who claim to be Evangelical are ALL against Homosexuality...so give the SA a break! Jeez...

I recommend the Catholic Charities. They do so much good for needy homeless people. They even helped my daughter find a place to live in one afternoon because she was being stalked by her ex-boyfriend. They provided a home, food, surgery and a case worker for my son when he was destitute. From there he went to a half way house and they helped him find a good job so he could start over again. Every person has their own reality. I don't think all Salvation Army's are like the one described in this story.

Catholic Charities usually do not spent on self promotion, or big salaries. I have seen the good things they have done, as well as the bad. It is up to me to find a place I want to help. BTW, I am not a wonderful example of my faith in action, but I try.

I'm very upset about this. I volunteered for the Salvation Army and at our unit nothing like that happened while I was there. But not all locations are managed the same way by the same people. As these posts demonstrate, many locations have severe problems which must be fixed immediately. To all who have just complaints: tell everyone. Call in local news media. Find other clients who have been similarly mistreated. There is power in numbers! Meanwhile, I will be writing to the national office to demand immediate action. Jesus will not tolerate this situation and neither should we.

When an organization is large enough there will bound to be bad apples around that bring more damages than goods, a complaint like this one would be a good sign to start some internal investigation and flush them out or whole organization will fall.

Throwing out goods that have been sitting for a while is pretty much commonplace at any large corporation charity place. I know for a fact that Goodwill does this as my mum, years ago (when I was like 6-8), as a single mother used to go through the (at the time)open dumpsters to search for things to resell on kijiji or to keep. To our disbelief we found gold chains, fossils, perfectly good condition furniture and electronics, among many other things

I have been homeless, and have seen this in all sorts of places. The one place I saw the Salvation Army do the most good was the homeless services program in Las Vegas, Nevada USA. The programs you can get into, behind just the shelter are very good, or were in 1999-2001.

I approached the SA in my locale and was told to go back to where I came from because we were starving and elderly.. I was told that I shouldn't have come to this place if I didnt have money.. I had moved for my health but they didn't care.. so this not caring is rampant in lots of locations.. I discovered that the SA doesn't do back ground checks on any staff, they take all volunteers and don''t really care who they are as long as they work for free and can do their dirty work for them... When I finally told someone about what happened they just pushed it under the carpet and called me a liar.. so ya.. I been there..

Money and Greed, every human is blinded by it. Why not "All the Rich Countries" donate every "Poor Countries?" Sound like very Human-like, so whats the point living in this world without finding some answers, WARS that have no meaning, even "Aliens" Afraid of us, Human, why? human kills human, but they dont kill each other same species thats why they technology are higher than us!, think logically, if we humans unite and share, Insha Allah its will be possible we can reach them, only if this worlds still standing. Sorry its out-of-topic. Im only thinks this on my own will. Pls spread this message, Ty. (Except, Donald Trump)

When I was a kid I detasseled for the Salvation Army. Six weeks. Seven days a week. Sun up to sun down. I was paid $20. My mom complained that I was underpaid and they needed to rectify it. She was told that I was docked because I was late to work one day. That was the day THEIR bus was late picking us up. I've never donated to them. I've never put money into their stupid red kettles. They are the epitome of organized crime and slave labor.

I've never donated to the Salvation Army and I never will. When my mum came out of her first marriage (here then husband was abusing her) this was around 1967/1968, she went to the Salvation Army, also because she had 7 children at the time and she heard good stories about the Salvation Army. She was refused at the frontdoor, because as a Christian woman she shouldn't have left her husband, eventough he abused her, had a gambling addiction and slept with other women. My mother ended up at the local police station, where she spend the night in a cell, but also had a good and huge breakfast. So no donations for the Salvation Army from me.

I was born in a Salvation Army Home in NJ... when I was in college I did a paper on that home and was touched and impressed by the ethic and dedication of this "Army." If there are problems and people who might do better with another job, that may be, but cutting them off is not the answer. They do more good than harm and we need to help people in need, but until we're there, doing that work, I hope we'll face this problem with an open mind and not dismiss all the good the SA does. I don't do that work... but glad others do.

It's s rare that I'll comment on something like this, but: Firstly, you can see the truth of what this woman says, in the fact they kicked her out, and the comments of similar experiences. Secondly, here are my experiences: Homeless, nowhere to live. Approached Salvation Army, had to speak to some faceless person via intercom, told they weren't going to help. Homeless, nowhere to live: Approached council, which decided I was in priority need, referred me to a different Salvation Army hostel. Very hateful (especially of the residents who were not straight), lied about stuff, then wouldn't agree to recording for evidence of what was actually said. A man asked them for food - not money, FOOD. They had loads of it. They wouldn't give him anything. They invaded privacy too. On top of this: They help the current UK government forced disabled people into inappropriate work. They censor any comments they dislike, e.g. on Facebook, and throw people out of groups for asking questions.

Damn. Sounds like the group for autism I was in. More importantly though, while groups like this can do good, not all of them "do", and it's important to speak up if a particular group or shelter is not doing the right thing. I won't say the entirety of the salvation army is good or bad- kudos for speaking up though. I myself haven't been able to in a way that gets as heard.

I stayed at an SA shelter I'm Modesto,Ca. I was working nights, and not really sleeping during the day because it was so loud in the room and was really having a difficult time. So I went into my weekly meeting with my caseworker and was telling her how tired I was and how super stressed I was. She googled " How to release stress" and told me I needed to get laid.

They killed a trans woman by not letting her stay in the shelter. She froze to death outside. Same with gay people, or people with disabilities. You can't defend SA, even if it's 'just a few' cases. HQ isn't bothering to punish these people.

Im not surprised by all the comments in regards to the appropriation of money in the Salvation Army or any charity! I will not donate to a single one of them any more...have not done for years. They are a money making concern in which the hierarchy receive a sizeable salary, bonuses and perks! Cars and petrol, travel, computers, utility bills paid and ...I’ve also heard that one charity that dispensed vouchers...used them and gave them to family members instead of the needy! They are all ‘help yourself before anyone else’ charities! 😡

Find an organization with a perfect record. Or find a local center making a difference in your community. Image if all the Salvation Army centers closed tomorrow, it would get rid of all the jerks! I am not sure what the right answer is. Good and bad examples should be considered. I have learned a great deal from this, now what will I do with what I learned. The salvation army is pretty shady! I have my own experiences with them but I don't have time to go into all that. There is a charity shop here that I donate to. They don't turn anyone away and everything is free. They keep a chart on each person and your allowed to get so much a month. It's the only place I donate to anymore.

And this doesn't even address the organization's views of LGBTQ people. There's a story floating around Tumblr where a bell-ringer at a mall turned into an absolute harpy because two young women went by holding hands, told them they were going to hell, the works. Anyone can go to a public library and use a computer - people dont need to buy a $1000 laptop to get their voice heard. How dare you criticize those who dare to speak out for having the nous to do so. I have been homeless, living in a womens refuge and still managed to keep in touch with the world - I was working at the time - unlimited internet access.. Do you think there is something wrong with homeless people able to use technology?

I support a local shelter for LGBTQ teens who get thrown out of their homes when they "come out of the closet." As someone who has worked in human services serving the homeless and underprivileged for many years, I urge people not to make judgements about an entire organization based on anecdotes.

Considering that she got kicked out after they assured the woman they would look into it, I would say it's the whole organization. Bad apples really do spoil the bunch.

They are discriminate towards gay people! I will NEVER donate to them! The original Greek manuscript of the Bible never mentioned anything about homosexuals or gay people. David & Jonathan may have been lovers. 2 Samuel 1:26 [KJV] I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
