Man Tries To Capture A Lightning Storm Outside On Camera, Records The Scariest Moment Of His Life

When 38-year-old Daniel Modøl went outside to film a distant storm he didn’t expect it would get so close. He was safely standing on his terrace in Gjerstad, Aust-Agder, Norway and shooting lightning bolts flashing in the area. Nature, however, had planned something more.

While still in his flip-flops, Daniel witnessed a lightning strike leaving a crater in his backyard about 15-20 feet (4,5-6 meters) away from him. He wasn’t fast enough to record the near-instantaneous bolt, but he did document the aftermath.

Modøl decided to go back inside for the remainder of the storm. He found his ceiling fan off and burn marks all over the electrical outlet where his modem was. I’d say that’s a fair bargain, considering you just barely avoided getting blown to pieces.

When 38-year-old Daniel Modøl was filming a distant storm, he clearly wasn’t aware of nature’s plans

He was standing on his terrace, capturing lightning bolts in the horizon, but suddenly everything came a lot closer

He also documented the terrifying aftermath

And his video inspired people to share their close encounters with lightning storms as well

Remember people, if you hear the thunder within like 3 seconds of the light, the next bolt can be close enough to hit you. Make sure to go inside when that happens!

Lightning can strike 20 miles ahead of a storm. Thunder five seconds after a lightning strike means it's 1 mile away. Experts say that if you hear thunder, you're likely within striking distance!

We so rarely gets Thunder storms where I live but I still try to remember to stay inside, I think I've sat under my front porch once or twice. It's a good thing I have some sense of self-preservation or I would have been struck by lightning by now

When I was six I lived in an old farmhouse with the unusual property that the fuse box for the house was in the bathroom, right beside the toilet. I was taking a leak like boys do when lightning hit the house. An arc of electricity jumped from the fuse box to my left shoulder, down my arm and out my hand. To this day I feel fortunate that I am right handed.

Last year, around this time, I was outside in my backyard with my two sisters. We were standing on our balcony watching a storm, about 20 feet away was out Zip Line. I wish I could have recorded the lighting strike it. The wire was bright red for a second then the wire was black and it snapped. :( And the noise was deafening, I was in shock for like 3 minutes after I could barely breath I was TERRIFIED.

Here is my story. There was a huge storm in the middle of the night. Our family was asleep and all. Then BAM!! Lightning struck our swimming pool. It was extremely bright and very loud. I imaging the water could have amplified the light or whatever. I really believed I died(I was 7. cut me some slack). My heart was about to burst. Worst way to wake up. The second time, lightning struck somewhere in the street, but any type of metal shot out sparks a few metres out. The metal railing of a curtain created a spark and shocked my mother. She says that it also shot out of her thumb.

The water reflecting the light would not have made any perceivable difference. The lightning bolt really was that bright. It's the same as instead of someone taking your picture with a flash from a few feet away, they held the camera flash directly in front of your face.

I dunno how close it was, but I can tell you it was close enough for a unique experience. It was a summer night and the weather was unstable. I was with my siblings and some friends hanging on the benches under the roof of our local library. Suddenly a storm hit so loud and bright that my vision, for a moment, jumped up. Literally, like the image on an analogue tv screen when the signal makes the screen jump up and down, or ehen there's a bug in the video, or something. Apparently it wasn't too close, though, since there were no craters or fires nearby afterwards. Still it was impressive.

I mean, not a storm that hit, it was a lightening strike. Otherwise, the rain and the wind were not that much.

I've been so close to getting hit by lighting several times in my lifetime. in 1968 I lived in OKlahoma...a bolt of lightning hit across the street just as I opened the door. it sent a garbage can high into the air.1983 I was sitting on the john when a lightning struck the ground in the back yard, hitting a pipe and rattling the toilet. Fast forward to 2004 in TN. I was driving down a fairly busy street when a bolt hit the other side of the road, sparks flew...other people pulled over to the side like I did. I was so scared to get back on the road for fear of it striking me! I still love storms though...even though here in CA we don't get them much.

I've been close to lighting before too, I was young using the computer there was no thunder in the area at all of a sudden I started to feel all the airs stand up like I was touching a van der graaf generator. The screen on the comouter was the old CRT's and it went all purple like i had a magnet on the screen, then BANG the computer poped and then smoke everywhere the power was out. The weird thing about this there was no more lightling that day at all the power was out for sometime as it took the powerboard 23 hours to get everythign in the area going up again. The lighting struck outside the house it went for a tree wrapped around it and hit the ground next to the house it must have traveled underground somewhere and jumped onto the power cables.

I was driving home from work during a thunderstorm when a bolt of lightning struck my car. Blew out the entire electrical system, and exited out of the front left headlight. The idea about being safe in a car because the rubber tires ground the car is a myth.

I'm surprised that nobody seems to know that lighting can come up through the ground. I have seen lighting come through dirt ground as this photographer was taking pictures in the mountains and he saw the before and the after pics and noticed this little purple light in the dirt. He said If I stood there I would not be showing you this now. I would not be safe on a wooden deck. I think that is a warning to go inside.

He's damn lucky, he was standing on the floor boards and the air wasn't humid. This massive electricity travels further than the stuff we use in our households. A friend of mine was struck by lightning while she was inside (!) a hut in the mountains, just standing on the bare floor. She was knocked out and fortunately only mildly injured. The lightning had struck outside but travelled through the soil.

I remember when I was a kid my sister was playing a game of softball everyone's hair started slowly standing up. people looking around at each other thinking they all looked really funny. My father started freaking out and told everybody if they don't get on the ground now someone's going to die. People freaked screams crying but everyone laid down. 3 ft Away a huge Lightning Bolt hit the slight Hill behind the diamond. if my father didn't do what he did it would have been one of the kids. They would have been taller than that Hill.

Ouch, this man was quite unlucky. The roof of my apartment building got hit twice by a lighting, it sounded like someone released a bomb and the static electricity made all the hairs on my neck and back stand straight up. Really, lightings are scary!

HEY KIDS! guess what? if you are close enough to see lightning YOU ARE CLOSE ENOUGH TO GET HIT BY IT! do yourself a favor, stay indoors during thunderstorms and the like.

Not true. There have been a lot of thunderstorms in my area in the last month or so. I can always see the lightning, but it's over 20 miles away

So lightning strikes a few meters away and this mental giant doesn't go inside? Please don't reproduce.

That was excellent editing of the strike, showing it several times and the aftermath as well. You were also EXTREMELY lucky to survive!
