“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) One more... If the cops invite you to come down to "talk" say no. The minute they tell you they are taking you, shut up other than you want a lawyer. Even if you are 100% innocent. Period. There are no gray areas to this.

In an arrest they say “you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you.” And this is because it’s true they will use it against you so save yourself a favor and JUST SHUT UP

Also note that they only have to tell you those rights after you've actually been arrested. They can and do still use anything you say against you even before they've read those. So "just talking" still counts against you even though they haven't officially read you your rights.

Just a sad realization that cops are not there to protect and serve but to trip you up and pin you for whatever they’re investigating.

They don't care if you're innocent or guilty. They figure you're guilty of something and closing cases is their bottom line. I sat in on a law class for police science. It was taught so differently than any other law class I'd taken. I think the favorite saying in the class was, "lock 'em up, they're all guilty." Which was very unnerving when they were supposed to be discussing ethics. I left that class at the end of the semester shaken to the core

THIS! Look at how many people are sitting in prison for crimes THEY DID NOT COMMIT all because they trusted cops & didn't lawyer up.... lawyering up if you're innocent has been discredited on purpose by law enforcement so that they can take advantage of you.. plain & simple. & before you say "I'd never admit to a crime I didn't commit" ....... that's what everyone says. Yet the scientific data collected has proven that we are ALL capable of doing this depending on the environment we are in. Especially when we're Sleep deprived, hungry & have been isolated for long periods of time. 3 tactics police use to break down "suspects" .... If you don't believe me.. look into the innocence project. It's disturbing how often this happens & how often people are later exonerated, sometimes decades later all because DNA was finally tested & the person sitting in prison does not match it. PLEASE LOOK INTO IT & SHUT YOUR FUCKEN MOUTH & GET A LAWYER. PERIOD

Capital cases, where death is the punishment, are the most carefully scrutinized cases in criminal law. Yet even with those cases, over 12% are found to be innocent, often when new evidence comes to light after their appeals have expired and they're sitting on death row. The criminal "justice" system in the US is punitive, not rehabilitative. Too many "good 'ole boys" throwing anyone with a color or attitude they don't like into prison. I'm a older white woman and I'm terrified of police - I can't imagine the trauma people of color must experience during any encounter with the police in the US.

Also I think they can't search your car without a warrant, unless something illegal is in plain sight. So if they ask you to pop the trunk, you can say no.

You have the right to say no. Then they have the right to detain you until a canine unit and a c**p ton more angry cops show up. They don't like it when they think their authority is being challenged. My fear would be that they'd plant something in retaliation. But as I've said before, I'm terrified of police.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) Tell your daughters: if someone is coming at you in a threatening/kidnapping vibe, pull out your phone and say "Facebook Live" and theres a good chance they'll walk away... Since it's "Live/streaming". You don't have to actually fidget to get FB Live up and streaming, just say that you are. (please do if your capable). It saved my 38 year old cousin from getting kidnapped while out walking her dog. She learned it from a 14 year old girl (friends with her parents) who was also almost kidnapped.

Yes this great advice . I feel it's important to add though ... especially for young women , don't walk around with your face in your phone. Be aware of your surroundings . Criminals usually operate by taking somebody off guard who isn't paying attention and can be easily ambushed

I partly agree. E.g. if I'm walking and I'm about to enter a non-friendly-looking area, I will definitely take out my headphones. But I'm not spending most of my day being aware, paying attention and generally avoiding ambush. I know I would be safer if I were, but I might also go mad so I consider it a fair exchange.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) If you think you hear someone outside your house at night, your instinct will be to turn all the lights on. You should in fact turn them all **off** for two reasons: First, with the lights off he can't see where you are or what you are doing. Second, you know your way around your house in the dark way better than he does, and if he gets in, this works to your advantage.

Why has no one said dog? You think someone is outside? The dogs are going to know way before you do. And cats too. Seen both "alert" when something was outside. I had an Old English go to a window, looked out and began growling real deep and loud. Whatever was out there left. Another time my Pharaoh hound female heard someone at the door in the middle of the night. She ran up to it leaping in the air and hit the door with all four paws hard multiple times loud all while barking like crazy. I called the cops because I heard a car door out front right before she went off. Cops would not come in. She looked too much like a dobie in the dark and they knew she was already agitated. I really think both saved me.

I have long believed it is better to die where there is a chance the attacker will be seen and/or interrupted, so my plan is to fight to the death if I can, where I am standing. Rolling under a car can buy you time... it's not easy to pull a kicking screaming person out from under it. As others have said... get as many bodily fluids out as you can, kick, scream, scratch, but make staying put your goal, if escape is impossible. If you do see a chance to escape, take it, but it's better to run towards something if possible than to just run away... head for a road, lights, whatever is closest, and not towards darker deserted areas.

Yes, if you are able to remember to act as bizarrely as possible it will wrong step them allowing a potential window of opportunity to flee. Unfortunately when our fight flight instinct is triggered, our cognitive capacity is reduced, often meaning that you don't always do the best thing to escape

This is an extremely morbid question but if you're fighting someone, would a spoon be a good weapon, to like, scoop their eyes or turn it around and hit em in the throat?

It’s either headed right for you or directly away from you. Better to assume the former than to be wrong. If that is the case, and there isn’t shelter, run to the side; don’t run directly away, run parallel. I guarantee you that it is faster than you are and running to the side will take you out of its path.

DO NOT DO THIS. If it is coming your direction abandon vehicle and lay in the ditch get as close to the ground as possible and cover your head. The tornado will flip your car 50 times with you inside. You are better protected 12 inches from the ground than inside a vehicle in tornadic winds. In a vehicle you are unalived with great haste. Tornado don't care and will change direction at will. Also under bridge overpasses is NOT safe. It was thought once but proven wrong.

When I lived in Irving Tx I was watching a certain major channel on TV. It was located on the east site of Fort Worth. It was late in the evening. The show was interrupted by 2 news anchors coming on screen about the weather they were experiencing right then. The studio lights were going on and off and you could actually hear the wind blowing outside the building. It wasn't a couple of minutes later I heard the tornado sirens going off. The tornado had raced across the mid cities in just a few minutes. I grabbed my cat. 2 choices: bathroom or closet. I chose closet. It sounded like a freight train going over my apartment. It felt like it lasted forever. I have never been so scared in my life. I was praying to God "Please make this stop" over and over again. We were OK, but now I am sent into a panic by strong winds. Also, the channel I happened to be watching was the only one who issued a severe weather warning. If you were watching either of the other 2 stations you had no warning

Emergency physican here: we give 250mg of aspirin intravenously to patients having a heartattack. After that, in most of the patients 100mg daily lifelong. Not stroke while stroke can also be due to bleeding. Here (Germany) there also is Aspirin containing 500 or 1000 mg of the (same) active substance, but those are for headache/cold. This was just to illustrate the dosing range. If you are actually havin an emergency call 112 (Germany)

I am a complete overthinker, but i do know the difference between my head spinning in circles and my belly telling me something. Gutfeelings are immediate, they often cause an immediate physical reaction such as tense muscles (amygdala speaking, the reptile brain), if it's just overthinking there might not be such an immediate fight-or-flight response. Of course, everyone is different, this is just how I differentiate.

Overwhelmingly, the feeling that "something is wrong" was the most noticeable symptom that I was having a heart attack. I had no chest pain, but had pain in both shoulders (similar to the gas pains you get after surgery). I knew it wasn't a panic attack because it didn't feel like one. Just this weird sense of "something is wrong."

Depends on the wall's construction. In my concrete box, it will flow under / around the doors easily and quickly, but never pass through the walls. --- That being said, if you have a detector and it goes off...LEAVE IMMEDIATELY, do NOT collect personal effect, other than a robe and shoes. Exit and THEN call Emergency Services and the Utility Company!

I'm skeptical to this. Carbon monoxide isn't some kind of magic gas that can pass through any wall... However, it is dangerous as heck. It is odourless, colorless, tasteless.. and your body accepts it instead of oxygen into the bloodstream. except that you are suffocating due to lack of oxygen in the bloodstream.

Reach. Throw. Row. Go (or Don't Go depending on your abilities). You can't help them if you die trying. Anyone drowning instinctively grabs onto anything around them and will absolutely climb on top of you while trying to save themselves, drowning you in the process. It's instinctual, not intentional. Approach from behind if you absolutely must approach. And if they dunk you, swim down & away; they won't follow. You can always hang back and let them tire themselves out until they can't fight you.

I grew up a beach kid. My dad taught us early on that there is a reason the life guards carry the big floats with them when they enter the water. We have people drown every year trying to save someone else.. often they are parents trying to save their kids. If you are going swimming, always have something you can use to throw if you need to... even an empty bleach or detergent bottle on a strong rope will do, as will a boat hook or a long enough pole.

In Canada lifesaving we use the Ladder Approach...Talk, Reach, throw, wade, row, swim, tow, carry.... and even with the swim part.. you turn to face victim from a distance and push the buoyant aid towards the victim with your foot and encourage them to grab on to the aid so you can tow them back..

I've slept in my car while traveling more than once. Each time I found a police station, parked under the light and went in and said I was too tired to drive anymore and needed to sleep for a little bit. I'd say I can't afford a hotel, and really don't want more than an hour or two, so I'm parked outside under the light in the parking lot. I'd then say I just wanted the to know so they didn't think anything was wrong. They just said OK, and I got a good nap.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) A lot of people find it appealing to have a weapon on them and that’s a personal choice I won’t go into lol. If you choose to, whether it’s a knife, or a gun, or pepper spray, KNOW HOW TO USE IT!!! You will be amazed how quickly your knife can be turned on you if you don’t know what you’re doing with it. I also heard a piece of advice that is sad, but probably effective imo. If you’re getting robbed or attacked or whatever, don’t just scream or yell for help. Scream and yell “help my child!” Yes even if you don’t have a kid. That’s more likely to draw someone’s attention, especially if you’re a man calling for help. Hope this helps someone.

Everyone says yell “fire”. I’m yelling “my baby! Help my baby”. Also everything you’ve mentioned is actually illegal to carry where I live, yes, even the mace. Perfume sprays aren’t illegal and I’ve seen them wipe out mosquitoes. They are going to blind you just as efficiently. Also, you can’t legally carry a knuckle duster but your car keys are fine. Your mobile phone is your best friend and have it in your hand ready to dial. Also shout out loud that you’re calling the police, in fact shout, scream, yell I’m at “such a location” .

I used to carry a small hair spray when I was in uni and used to be out at night a lot. I never use hair spray for my hair, but it seemed like something that would be useful in a self defence scenario. Same idea as yours: it's not illegal, but it will hurt like hell if it gets into your eyes. But if it deploys accidentally in a bag, not a major problem. Also had one of those noise devices that make a VERY loud screaming sound if you pull out a little plug. I lived alone in a block of flats where break ins were not unheard of, so I also had a huge screwdriver under my pillow at night. I was lucky enough that I never ad to use either, but it was good to know they were there.

Anything you hold can be taken away and used against you if you're not prepared. Pepper spray or taser is all good until you spend a minute getting it out & ready, then it's getting used on you or don't know how to properly wield it.

I’d like to add some related outdoorsy advice. If you’re in bear country keep your bear spray in easy reach - a spot that you can draw it from quickly with one hand, like at your waist pack or side pocket of your backpack. Test to make sure you can access it quickly. If you have to dig it out from your pack or a zippered/latched compartment there might not be enough time

Like the old saw, if a woman is being attacked, if she cries "rape," people will ignore it...going so far as to close open windows, so instead, yell "fire," 'cause people are interested in saving their own skin, and the latter will make them react. Further to the weapon...once you learn how to use it, never draw it unless you plan to use it, or it WILL be used against you. Once you draw it, USE IT. Once you use it, get the duck out of fodge! You can call 9-1-1 once you're safe!

After getting attacked someone one night (I'll spare you the details), I struggled and was so tempted to carry a weapon, any weapon, just to feel safer and be outside alone again. My granddad came from a very tough neighborhood and told me that if I carried a weapon I'd have to "be prepared to use it or to have it used against me". I never did.

As we say in my Taekwondo doenjang, weapons are extensions of the wielder's mind. If the wielder isn't focused, the weapon won't be useful. If the wielder knows how to use it, it can save their life.

If you intend to use a knife to defend yourself, hold it in your fist with the blade away from your thumb, it will provide protection to your forearm way and make it more difficult for an attacker to control your knife hand.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) NEVER put something in someone’s mouth if they’re having a seizure. Try to turn them on their side, and place something soft like a jacket or pillow under their head while they have a seizure. If it lasts five minutes or longer call an ambulance. Addtionally, place them in the 'recovery position'. i.e on their side, face turned paralell to the ground and their upper arm in front of them to help hold that position. This helps keep their airway open. Persons who have seized, fainted, had a stroke etc. will also often loose their stomach contents and this position will help prevent choking.

You mean after they’ve stopped convulsing though, right? I’ve double checked a few sources (Red Cross, CDC, some epilepsy foundations) and they’re clear about not restraining during a seizure. Instead we’re advised to move objects out of their way, put something soft under/beside their head if needed, and be sure stay with them after. Recovery position is suitable POST-seizure if needed, and I think this is likely what you meant. (Best to clarify though so there’s no confusion)

I have dealt with this situation. I had no Idea what was happening, I just saw someone fall down between the cars as I was walking back to my own car. I just kept them away from anything that could injure them, put my cardigan under their head and waited. In about 2 minutes they started to come to a bit and I’d found their medicalert bracelet. We just sat together for a bit until they were happy and fully alert. I told them how long their fit had lasted and asked if they needed me to contact anyone. They asked me to call their daughter who came straight along and took it from there. I got a lovely call a few days later saying that they’ve adjusted their medications and are feeling a lot better.

I wonder if the dogs realize when he's about to have a seizure and they trigger him to do something that prevents it. I know that dogs can be trained to alert someone who has seizures before they occur, but is there anything a person can do to stop the seizure from actually occurring after they've been alerted?

For everyones safety give them room. Also, have the lookieloos turn their back on them to give them a modicum of privacy during their seizure. Have someone call 911 and get back to you. Stay with the person until help arrives.

My dad (who died in '99) had severe epilepsy. I had to physically fight adults, when I was a young child, who wanted to 'help' by coming over with spoons and other things to 'protect his tongue'. The only help I used to ask for was an ice cream for myself and a jacket to put under dad's head. I'd just patiently sit next to him for however long it took, stroking his face and saying "you'll be OK, I'll look after you". --- When I was eight or so, I memorised my GP's phone number. He'd tell people "ah yes, that is my patient. He'll be OK in ten minutes or so and he has tranquillizers in his wallet. Don't let him take those until he is fully awake and alert". --- Not much else you can do, I guess.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) If you're fighting a kangaroo, as you do, punch the kangaroo as hard as you possibly can, and don't run. Running shows fear and then the kangaroo knows it can beat you. The reason why you punch is because, in a kangaroos mind, any kick is way stronger than any punch. Let's say 10x stronger (I don't know exactly). So if you punch them hard enough, they'll back down because they'll think you can kick them 10x harder than that. If you didn't punch them hard enough, well, you're f****d.

To be fair, most wildlife takes s**t from no one. It's their survival instincts. I live in a European country with very few things that can kill you, but stepping on a viper or unknowingly getting too close to a boar's young is still something that could end extremely badly for you. And that's without getting too far away from the city.

Don't ever walk out in front of a moving car expecting them to stop, even in a crosswalk. As a pedestrian, you have the right of way, but don't ever surprise a driver or just assume they see you. They could be blinded by the sun, headlights, etc, or be distracted temporarily for a number of reasons. Most pedestrian fatalities are ultimately avoidable if you respect the other.

And pls! Walk/run/jog, facing traffic. I don't wear ear buds, but if you feel you must, facing traffic is another safe way to be. You can see the vehicles coming toward you, if you can't hear them. Also, if someone were to try and kidnap you, they'd have less of a chance. If you got away, they'd have to turn their car around to chase you. If you're going the same direction as the car, they can just try to snatch you again. Also, stay off the road and out of the bike lane. In some places, using the bike lane is illegal unless you're on a bike. Almost forgot, black and dark colors are NOT reflective or safe when it's dark outside. Stay safe out there!

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) A couple different things for different situations. If you’re stabbed and the knife is still in, don’t take it out. It’s plugging a wound and stopping you from leaking. If you’re stuck outside in the cold, especially if you’re lost, stay in place and try to stay out of the wind. Stationary people are easier to find. Also, no matter how warm you suddenly feel, keep your clothes on. Your body flash-processes glucose in a last ditch effort to keep warm right before you freeze to death, and it can make you feel unbearably hot if you’ve been freezing for the last couple hours. Above all else, if you can’t remember anything else, “calm people live. Panicked people pass away.”

If you can, scratch your abductor (get their dna on you), vomit or urinate or bleed on them (to get your dna on them), and/or yell that a CHILD is in danger (people are more likely to help a child)

If you live and play in a big city or a place with a higher risk of crime, keeping “burners” handy in case you are a victim of armed robbery is very helpful. That old phone you’re trading in? Hold onto it. Wipe it and carry it with you when you’re out. Also keep a burner wallet. Put 80-100 in it, with either a cancelled state Id (ideally with an old address, or even get a fake) or some older expired stuff and an inactivated credit card. Keep your real s**t in a hidden pocket, boot, etc. if you do get robbed, calmly hand over the burner phone and wallet. The criminal will look inside, see some cash and a card, and then move on. In almost all situations, losing some cash and a 4 year old iPhone is much better than losing your real s**t, having to go to the dmv, being without a cell phone to call for help, and having your credit cards used fraudulently.

Even more important... A student in the dojo once asked his Sensei (Master level black belt), what (the Sensei would) do in the event of an armed robbery, and was shocked when the Sensei stated he would obey the demands of the thief. When asked why, the Sensei stated simply, "anyone can get lucky, and my life is more important than a wallet or watch." -- So, if they are armed, even if you KNOW 100% for sure you can mop the floor with them safely, do what you're told and leave the area. The theif may be lucky and kill you while defending him or her self.

Every place I've worked where we deal with customers, the managers have said, "If somebody comes up and tries to rob you, GIVE THEM THE MONEY. It doesn't matter if you feel they are a threat or not -- money can be replaced. People cannot."

I carry my old IPhone in my pocket or purse & then I keep my real one in my bra. I live in New Orleans. The odds of you being robbed at gun point are very high. So I also carry a decoy wallet with expired credit cards & fake cash... on the fake cash it says "HAHA YOU FUCKEN TWAT! GET A REAL JOB!" Lol. My dad had all of this fake money laying around... it was from a trade show years Ago (he was a trade show carpenter. Set up booths & stuff) I think it was printed to show off some commercial laser printer or something. Looks pretty real if you're not paying attention. But this actually saved my real wallet when a thief broke into my car. I had left my purse in the car, it rolled under the seat.. but my decoy wallet was in my glove compartment... thief took the decoy thinking he hit a lick.... that's when I got the idea to carry an old iPhone with me whenever I go to the quarter so if I get robbed I don't actually lose anything of real value.

I also only bring 1 card & a little cash whenever I got out & I keep that in my bra as well. I am NEVER on my phone when I'm in public... Too paranoid. So even if a thief was watching me.. he'd never see me pull out my real phone.

And remember that some foods and beverages containing caffeine can be dehydrating. If you're low on water, you should consider the effects of what you're ingesting. Juicy fruit... yes... dry protein bar? maybe not.

This is something that happened to me a few years ago. After a week of heavy drinking me and some friends were in the back of a car heading home. We were sleeping off our hangovers when I reached over groggily and gulped down a few gulps of my water. It took me a couple of seconds to realise the water was blue. In fact it was actually antifreeze in a water bottle that he had kept in the back. Antifreeze is tasteless and so is actually easy to drink. I immediately panicked and let everyone know I’d just drank poison, we pulled over and I tried to make myself sick repeatedly but I couldn’t due to my adrenaline even with fingers down my throat. I recalled in my college biology class that antifreeze itself isn’t poisonous, it’s what it breaks down into, if you can drink something that stops that from happening then you’re okay. I distinctly remember my teacher telling me that alcohol gets a priority pass when ingested after antifreeze and you should immediately drink it if this crazy situation should occur. I ran to the boot and started chugging straight alcohol that was left over from the weekend, I think I drank a half bottle of whiskey which was probably too much. At the hospital they actually gave me a tiny bottle of Smirnoff I think. I was quite hammered the rest of the way back singing songs in the car while my mates all had bad headaches, my hangover was delayed for a day and probably a lot worse but at least I didn’t die. A little more, yeah the bottle was just a plain old water bottle, the car was old and leaked coolant and my friend worked with cars. I still to this day realise how stupid it was having it lying in the back seat, but drinking it is no doubt much stupider. I sometimes feel like it was some kind of fate that I was taught that fact in school only maybe a year previously, also the driver was in the same class as me and so he immediately recognised what I was doing which was funny. The other guys must have thought I’d accepted my fate and wanted to go out on a high.

The very basic science is this: To preface, your liver processes certain compounds faster than others, which gives "priority" processing to some. Same as your nerves give priority to certain sensations. Antifreeze has methanol, which the body slowly breaks down into formaldehyde. Regular drinking alcohol is ethanol. For chemistry reasons, the body breaks that down much faster than methanol, so it gets the fast lane, effectively sending a lot of methanol on a detour to move on, unprocessed.

It sounds ridiculous but it's actually true. I used to work at an emergency animal hospital and we always kept a bottle of vodka (in a locked drawer with the controlled medications) to be used in case of a pet drinking antifreeze. Maybe his story could be fabricated, but the information in the story is correct.

If you think you've ingested methanol, get drunk quick and then to the hospital. Ethanol keeps methanol from doing damage and actually the correct treatment for methanol poisoning is an alcohol drip for a few days. There are stories of people managing to keep someone alive and not blind even by forcing them to drink enough booze for a couple of days

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) In the **extremely** unlikely event you are attacked by a swarm of bees, most adults can typically just outrun them, especially if you run into the wind. Do not stop running, some bees will chase you for up to a quarter mile. Do not try to hide under water, they will wait for you to come up for air.

I saved my mother's life using the Heimlich z Maneuver. It's also important to know how to perform it on yourself: Find any kind of hard surface that's only a few inches wide and at mid-chest to waist level, such as the back of a chair. Bend over the surface, jump, and land in a way where the area of your torso under your belly button makes forceful contact with that surface. I'm not explaining it well, so please do yourself a favor and look up a video on how to do it.

When I was a kid, my parents got into candle-making for a time -- not as a business, just a few here and there to give to family and friends. So one day, while alone in the house, 13-year-old me decides I'm going to make a candle, too... I'd watched them do it, so I thought I could easily handle the job. One critical thing I missed: the use of a double-boiler when melting the wax on the stove. The wax caught fire -- which wasn't a terribly big flame, maybe just a few inches high, but enough for me to be concerned. So, being a conscientious young man, I figured I'd better put it out... by throwing a bunch of water on top of it. WHOOMPH! Massive flame-up, which bubbled the paint on the cupboard doors. I don't remember how I put *that* fire out, but I did, before it got worse, thankfully. My folks weren't too happy, and needless to say, I learned my lesson that some fires shouldn't be extinguished with water. ;-)

The best advice in any sort of fire situation is to remain calm. If you panic you're going to do something stupid like move the pan, or throw water on it. It's also important to understand WHY throwing water on it is a bad idea. Water boils at a much lower temperature than oil combusts. The water will boil instantly, and the violence of that phase change will splash burning oil all over the general vicinity. Calmly contain the oil fire first, then concern yourself with putting out anything else which may have caught fire.

What I've always found interesting about this is most oil/grease fire extinguisher use water mixed with a special detergent. Just crazy that impacts the waters behavior so much. But don't use soapy water thinking that's the same thing

Don't throw water on electrical fires as well (eg when your power socket or appliance catches fire), you might get electrocuted. Instead turn off the power (fuse box), and smother with baking soda (NOT baking powder) or fire extinguisher.

For grease pan fires, get a tea towel, soak it in water and very carefully put it over the pan, thus starving the fire of oxygen and putting the fire out. I wish my mother had known that when I was a kid rather than let half the kitchen burn before the fire brigade arrived...

But once it catches something else on fire it’s just fire ! The grease burning makes it a grease fire ! So if it catches something else on fire that fire can be put out with water! I always used baking soda on the grease ! I use to make French fries a lot and caught my stove on fire a few times

Don't add grease to a regular fire, either. A tree caught fire while we were burning leaves (spark on the wind) and Mom accidentally grabbed a jug of cooking oil instead of the water jug from the kitchen. It was an emergency, so she didn't get mad at me calling her an idiot and swapping out the jugs.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) If you think you're being followed while walking outside, pretend to get a call and respond 'normally' and say something along the line that you'll meet soon. In the same scenario if you approximately know the person is slightly further behind and you round a corner.. run like an idiot to a more crowded or safer place. Go into a shop, bus, a group of people..hell even ring someones doorbell if you have to and ask to call the police. Absolute worst case scenario if it's in the middle of the night and nobody is out..and someone is following you..smash/kick someone's car so it sounds a loud alarm..it could scare the stalker off.

Have the local police non-emergency line in your contacts; if you tell them you're calling them because you think you're being followed, they should be willing to stay on the line with you to make sure you're safe and give you advice on what to do.

In sketchy areas at night especially I always pretend I'm talking to someone on the phone. So far it's never let me down. It makes people think you might have someone who would notice your absence plus it usually keeps them from bothering you unnecessarily too.

There is a guy on YouTube that makes shorts for this. He makes it sound like you get a call, then "answers" questions and talks about your "dad" that's a cop and how he is currently tracking your phone.

Retired Elementary Teacher here. We had hundreds of kids walk home alone every day. We told them to pick a safe house on the way that if they felt someone was following them or a car was acting suspicious then go to the safe house and ask to be let in. It had to be someone they knew, parents had made arrangements with, and was probably home. We had several other things beside that we told them about to be safe like walking in groups among other things.

If you are being attacked by almost any predator the first thing you should go for is the eyes. Predators are smart animals and only hunt what won't maim them. If you go for the eyes of a predator it will mostly likely back off and reevaluate trying to eat you. Only time a predictor will risk a vital organ to hunt ( aka eyes ) is when it is starving. Else it will back off knowing that if you do take out its eyes it will not be able to hunt anymore therefore starve.

The throat is also a valid target (for a human predator). A blow to the windpipe can put the largest person down for long enough for you to beat feet! You can train for the blow to the nads...but the throat reflexively closing is going to screw anyone up! As for the non-human predator, some (bears, wolverines, etc.) have heavy brows and comparitively small eyes...making any shot at striking successfully there slim at best. Loud noises, sloow backwards retreat (if it's not charging), and making yourself as large as possible can discourage an attack. (Now, doing the last versus a 3 metre tall ursine is NOT going to work!) But, remember, unless desperate (hungry), or defending a den or young, they want to attack you as much as you want them to do so.

if the thing that is attacking actually bites you DO NOT pull away, push toward their mouth. Pushing in toward the mouth will force it open more, it could even break the jaw. Pulling out will just rip your skin and make the bite worse.

Modern cars should because they take continuous input from all wheel speed sensors. My car only has three sensors, but if any one of them is not working the cruise control will not engage. Aside from that, cruise control does not take any input from YOU regarding what speed is safe for driving, and in severe weather that can change rapidly and you need to be able to react very early.

This isn’t true anymore unless you have a very old vehicle. Almost all modern vehicles are equipped with antilock brake systems and traction/stability control systems which disengage the cruise control *automatically* when one wheel spins at a different rate from the others. FWIW I own a trucking company and I know a thing or two about driving (wink).

I live in sandy Florida... because it can be so hot here, you are more likely to need twice as much water as you think you need and a packable shovel. A survival blanket is always a great idea... they take almost no space and can also be used as protection from rain. Sunscreen, insect repellent (change them at least yearly) and a wide brim foldable hat. I also knew a guy who carried two strips of old carpet, to use under the back tires if he got stuck in sand (he was a fisherman, and often in remote sandy areas)

The best emergency food to keep in your car is a bag of dried dog food. It's nutritionally complete, is shelf stable for a long time, and you won't be tempted to snack on it on those long, boring drives. You will, however, be grateful you had it if you find yourself snowbound for days.

When lost in the woods and you find a logging road, the intersections at a t are generally not 90. The least sharp turns almost always point back to the highways. Full logging trucks don't turn as easily so the less sharp turns are usually on the way out. __ \ ___ --> highway this way.

It's a lot easier in New England. We have loads of "goat roads," dirt roads that are usually closed in the winter. And there are stone walls even in the middle of the forest and tons of streams and brooks. Find a road, a wall, or a stream and follow it. You won't be too far from civilization, as New England is small (except for upstate Maine).

Similarly, don't prop your feet up in the passenger seat of a car. Like putting them up on the glove compartment. In a crash, you will eat your knees and if the air bags go off... your injuries will be so much more severe than they would if your feet were on the floor. A friend of mine had the glove compartment k**b embedded in her kneecap. It was horrible.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) If a high voltage power line falls near you, stepping away from it may kill you, as they may carry more than 100,000 volts. One large step may put your front foot at a place where the voltage is much lower. If the difference is high enough the insulation from your shoes may be too low to prevent the voltage from passing through (and killing) you. Prevent this by shuffling away using tiny steps. This minimizes the voltage difference between your feet.

If you are stuck partially submerged and can't get any of the door open you can pull the headrest out and use it to break the window that's not submerged. Don't break a submerged window or else water will come gushing I'm and push you to the back of your vehicle while shooting glass shards everywhere.

On related - have a window breaker in the glove box, or other easily accessible location, and smash the side window. You can climb out even while the car fills. If the car is still on the surface, (try to) open the door IMMEDIATELY, before inward pressure from the water becomes impossible to fight. If you have power windows, and you can't open the door (and you still have power), roll the windows down so you don't have to wait. -- Mythbusters actually covered this one!

If you can bring an opponent down, the best way is straight to the crotch. Male or female, it hurts with a pain that is indescribable. once they re down, 2 solid hits to each knee-cap will guarantee you chances of getting away from them. You probably won't permanently damage them, but injured knees make it impossible to even stand, never mind walk or chase you

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) If you get caught in a rip current, swimming against it will tire you out. Swim parallel to the beach until it weakens enough for you to escape and swim to shore

ALWAYS swim in life guarded areas, and NEVER swim alone!

Try and use a beach which has Life guards. Also a rip will be the bit of water that has no waves. It'll look like the safest place to get in. But there's no waves because all the water from the waves coming in, goes back out in that channel.

Swim ACROSS the current. Orient your swimming direction based on the CURRENT, not the shore.

I'm always confused when I read this because, if I am submerged, how will I know where the beach is?

Unless, I guess, if being caught in a rip current doesn't necessarily mean you are underwater?

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) If someone's pointing a gun at you, it's probably risky to pull out a gun and point it at them. I'd like for once to see a Hollywood movie where someone tries this and the other guy pulls the trigger immediately.

When under a missile attack go to a wall with no side the is directly outside, on the lowest floor you can (basement if have under a table (stay neer the tables leg) if there is an alert for any sort of chemical attack lock the doors and put wet clothes on the bottom and top of the door and on your face. I live in Israel.

“What Is A Little-Known Fact That Can Save You From A Life-Threatening Situation?” (30 Answers) Even if all your tires are flat/slashed you can still drive on them. It'll mess up your rims something fierce but you'll be able to get away from whatever is causing you drive on your rims. Edit: Holy c**p this blew up over night. Few things I'll add to this for clarification. As well as different things for different scenarios. Before I start I recommend you check your insurance. Most dealership insurance, or big insurance groups, have you pay for roadside assistance automatically, which means towing/lockout/gas/flat changing/jump start. 1. I meant this as yes, "a life threatening situation" but more of a Jason/Swamp-Thing/Hillbilly chasing you trying to murder you. Like in horror movies when they run to the car, see all the ties slashed, then immediately give up on that option. Don't give up, like I said you can still drive on it, get away from that situation. 2. If you plan on traveling a long distance get your car inspected. Most local shops, or even major ones, usual have a promotion going on for free checks first time. What they do is read the codes from your vehicle, check fluid levels, and then check the tread; something you can do with youtube and an autozone. Some of those are things that can be handled later but most issues you'll want to deal with based on what might cause the most issues. 3. Check if there is a spare. Most cars that have a spare have a pretty unsafe jack as well. It can lift up your car so you can change that tire but it takes forever. 3A. By unsafe jack I mean that while it can lift your car the moment your car rocks, from like a friend leaning on it or a kid jumping around, the rocking will cause it to slip and the car to fall. DO NOT GET UNDER THE CAR WITH THE JACK THEY USE FOR THE SPARE. 3B. Yes it can be exceedingly dangerous to change a flat based on whats going on around you, or where you are. If you are on a highway, interstate, or a place with a ton of blindspots get away from all that as fast as you can. You might have to drive on the rim a bit but let the mechanic worry about that. If you are on a dark road at night time get as far from the road as you can. If you are near a turn get inside the turn as most cars drift towards the outside when they turn at high speeds. Try to make yourself as visible as possible, reflective vest, people holding flashlights behind you, road flares. 3C. Fastest way I've found to change a tire. First, once you get to a location your confident in enough to get out in check traffic: see how many cars pass and how close they pass, that'll let you know it's relative safety. Second, put the E-Brake on and get the lug wrench and loosed the bolts before you lift the car. The reason is that, based on the tire location and your drive type, the tire may spin as you try to loosen the lug nut. By leaving it on the ground it acts like holding a jar, making it easier to loosen the nut. Same thing with the E-Brake, it'll stop the tire from spinning so you can loosen it. Third, once they are loose jack up the car, a lot. I know you can get the flat off once the rim is like 4 inches off the ground but you have to keep in mind the spare will be taller. Keep jacking it up until you the jack is nearly extend all the way. Most of the time the jack is sized for the spare so it'll look weird and make you a bit uncomfortable with how skinny it looks, that's fine. After this spin out the lug and replace the tire with the spare. Fourth, hand tighten all the lug nuts, using your other hand to push back the tire so as much off the bolt is exposed as possible. The lug wrench is long and it'll most likely mean you can only do 1/4 turns or 1/2 with it which will take forever to bolt back on the tires. This way you only use the lug wrench to tighten the screws, rather then put them on. 4. Driving on the rim will mess up your rims. Thats unavoidable, I'll leave it up to you to determine what the situation calls for. Honestly I recommend you check your tires every other week or so, use a penny to determine if the tire tread needs to be replaced. If the tread is smooth get it replaced immediately. I know money can be tight so a used tire shop is fine, they'll have more tread than the tire you got so that's good. 5. There is different goops/run flat bottles that are good for punctures. You spray it in the tire then inflate it. 5A. Because it's good for punctures you must inflate it to a good size at a gas station after you use the goop. 5B. The goop is normally only good for 100ish miles, it is literally meant as a stop gap till you can get it to a mechanic. Just because the title or picture's might infer that it's fixed, it is not: you need to get the hole patched or the tire replaced.

Thanks for all the additional info, specifically on tire changing. I recommend everyone try changing a tire so they know how to in an emergency.

This should be something everyone driving a car does from time to time, but unfortunately is not. Plus learning how to balance the tire pressures after they're changed. Of course changing tires is a more common occurance in areas where you need special winter tires, but this one everyone should get a handle on

Also keep in mind, if you don't absolutely need to use it, don't use the flat fix ("goop") stuff. Instant void of the warranty. -- Additionally, if your spare is a doughnut, keep two things in mind. First, they are called "500 mile tires" because they deteriorate FAST when used. They are intended to take you to the closest tire store. Second, in some jurisdictions, your insurance on the CAR is void if you don't pull into the first (open) store you come to...even if it is the one that charges 3x market rate!

Semi related. When you get your tires rotated or otherwise worked on make sure the tire guys don't over tighten the lug nuts. You'll be out in the middle of nowhere with no way to remove that tire.

Also test to make sure the lug nuts are tight a couple of times over the next few days. My sister's old bf lost a tire while he was driving once because someone had forgotten to tighten them enough using the "air wrench" (I'm having brain fart). It seemed fine before driving and loosened FAST.

I was told to tighten the lug nuts hand tight and then using the wrench go from top left to bottom right. Top right to bottom left etc. You want the tires to tighten down evenly and it's easier to do if you alternate sides and levels.

That's not the reason for loosening the lug nuts before you jack the car up. The reason is that trying to loosen lug nuts that have been machine-tightened can knock your car off the jack...and the jack will likely fly out at you and break something you treasure, like your skull.

No matter how much you trained your awesome karate moves, or even the much more realistic Krav Maga or mma, you have no actual chance to effectively block a knife attack with your bare hands. If you can't run, block with the outside of your arms, away from major arteries, and be prepared to get cut up badly!

It can help minimize the damage if you can wrap something thick around your arm, but real life is not like the movies. The attacker is not likely to let you whip your leather jacket off and wrap your arm!
