Although I guess that he is indeed fit, the double chin isn't necessarily giving that away. It's surprisingly genetic. I know some people that are slim (one even bordering underweight) that have a bit of a double chin and two total couch potatoes, with the body of a potato, but less double chin than my totally average weight partner.

Probably because the largest-bellied men are the most well-fed, meaning they're good providers and/or wealthy or highly-ranked in the tribe. Thus desirable, because they (ostensibly) can provide well for a wife and offspring.

This was also true for women around 150 years ago because being larger meant coming from a wealthy family, which meant potentially a large dowry and an easier life. Generally, attractiveness historically is gauged by perceived health and viability as a potential care giver and bearer of healthy genes. Attraction has more components than most people realize.
