Incredibly Realistic Wood Sculptures Of People Hand-Carved By Peter Demetz

Italian artist Peter Demetz has a gift for breathing life into the wood, a material that seems hard and lifeless to most of us. His wood sculptures of people are flawlessly life-like.

Demetz’s precise and perfect mastery of human anatomy makes his beautiful sculptures look like paintings or sketches, and his wonderful compositions and sense of perspective help perpetuate this illusion. The grain of the wood and its warm colors, however, give his realistic sculptures a tactile appearance that would be difficult to fake with paint.

Read on to see his responses to Bored Panda’s questions about his wood art!

RELATED:

I think there is so much what we communicate with our body, our posture, our individual motions,” Peter Demetz told Bored Panda

“People tell us a lot about their emotional status through their figures. This is what inspires me to create sculpture art”

“I love using waiting, looking or reflecting people because they tell no stories, they give us a perception of the soul”

“When they are watching an empty wall or a horizon without landscapes, we, like an audience, can imagine ourselves in the scene”

“I feel like my wood carvings are an invitation to enter the worlds of these people. To follow them in their own worlds”

“I use limewood. The realistic artworks take me from a few weeks to a few months depending on the size and composition”

There is a beast with heart of cold stone that dashes like lightning, shreds flesh from bone. // Bewitched by this beast, I fell to my knees. My mouth babbled madness and mumbled soft pleas. // I stared down the ravenous, gnashing dark maw of a cute cuddly kitten with yarn in its paw

I hate when ultrarealistic artists don't have a go at mystical beings and fantasy. it's a bore and a waste.

Beautiful! What a talent! Back of my mind, it does nag me that he makes such realistic people from a dead tree. The artist is gifted though.
