Tired Of People Claiming That Gays Never Existed Until Now, Person Collects 31 Pics As Proof That They Did
Love is love and that's how it's been since the dawn of man. However, navigating social dynamics in the past was way more difficult than today. Same-sex relationships had been seen as a sin, repressed through law enforcement and judicial mechanisms, and even condemned with death penalties. Luckily, we now live in a time where gay and lesbian couples can legally marry. And to celebrate the increased well-being within these communities, a former priest who goes by the name Nathan Monk has compiled a series of vintage pics, showing how same-sex couples looked back in the day.

"I found these historical photos online through a couple of different posts," Father Nathan Monk told Bored Panda. "I shared them because I think it’s important to remember those that come before us, those that fought, and struggled to live their authentic life. I believe it’s important to be reminded that homosexuality have always been part of society and always will be. That reality should be lovingly accepted instead of shunned and ridiculed."
Same-sex marriages have been recorded all around the world. Throughout the centuries, they have existed in many forms, ranging from informal, unsanctioned relationships to highly ritualized unions. And even though the Old Testament prohibited homosexual relations (Lev. 18:22, 20:13), and the Jewish sages provide the reason for this as being that the Hebrews were warned not to follow the acts of the land of Egypt or the acts of the land of Canaan, same-sex marital practices and rituals were recognized in Mesopotamia.
Also, at least two of the Roman Emperors were in same-sex unions. The first one to have married a man was Nero. He is reported to have married two other men on different occasions as well.
The first man whom he married, Nero took the role of the bride, and later as a groom Nero married a young boy to replace his young teenage concubine whom he had killed. He married his second spouse Sporus in a very public ceremony, with all the solemnities of matrimony. A friend gave the "bride" away "as required by law." The marriage was celebrated separately in both Greece and Rome in extravagant public ceremonies celebrating unconditional love.
In fact, thirteen out of the first fourteen Roman Emperors are believed to have been bisexual or exclusively homosexual.
Later on, the increasingly influential Christianity promoted marriage mainly for procreative purposes. Teachings of the Bible (as well as Talmud and Torah), were understood as prohibiting the practices as contrary to nature and the will of the Creator, and a moral shortcoming.
After the Middle Ages, same-sex relationships in Europe were frowned upon and banned in many countries by the church or the state. And, even though we as a society have made huge strides in dealing with these social "leftovers," there are many things we still need to do.
I'm not Gay, but since I believe that love has no boundaries, never has & never will!! I practically love this happy beautiful couple loving eachother as they profess their love & become just one on that special day despite the times!!
Father Nathan Monk said that it’s important to acknowledge that people still face bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination. "Even though that is felt by all LGBTQ+, it is most dangerous for people experiencing poverty and homelessness. A trans person living on the streets is more likely to be rejected by shelter programs, more likely to experience physical and sexual assault, and so many other dangers. We need to continue to elevate these stories and realities until everyone has a safe place to call home."
And even though Father Nathan Monk is no longer a priest, he still devotes his time to making Earth a better place for us all.
"I am now the author of two books, Chasing the Mouse and Charity Means Love. Both books address the issues of poverty and homelessness. I currently operate a homeless shelter and an educational institute. On the weekends, I typically travel to different communities to discuss poverty and homelessness solutions."
It must have been insanely dangerous for these young guys to express their love for one another. I can't even imagine it now.
I don't know why sarcastic cow got so many downvotes. Drag kings are a celebrated part of the lesbian community.
I wonder how many 'roommates' or 'good friends' were actually couples? I read an historical excerpt about a woman who was unusually distraught over the death of her landlady and I realized 'landlady' tells just part of the story.
Sure is, I'm very familiar with older pics I must say they show so much compassion for each other that wasn't appropriate in photos in that era I respect the hell out of them. People need to stop making others feel terrible for who they love, who cares? No one should ever be raised to hate. Love is love.
Ppl should be glad *love* has always been around

Exactly! I'm wondering exactly the same - who said that?

70. 70 countries have laws on their books against homosexuality. Let's not fool ourselves that this issue is even close to being in the past.
Load More Replies...Homosexuality has indeed been around since the appearance of homo sapiens. But to be fair I am not sure all of this pictures depict a homosexual relationship.
Of course there has been. People found different ways to get around it. My great grandmother had a "lady companion" to keep her company, travel with her. In photos, her "companion" is always standing behind her or gazing at her.
These photos warmed my heart. I can't imagine what their lives were like in those times when they had to hide, run from murderous gangs, be jailed or worse, just because of who they loved. Men had to hire women as "beards" (pretend dates) to go out in public with their lovers to dinner or to shows. Women could be sent to insane asylums by any male member of their family for being gay. Women could also be arrested for wearing men's clothing in public. These folks were very brave indeed. These photographs are spectacular!
I have never heard that it is Millenials who invented LGBTQ+, but I have noticed that the terms used now have changed over time. It is well known and documented that there have been same sex relationships in humans for as long as there have been humans. It is only since the rise of the Abrahamic religions that it has been seen as something as sinful and wrong. I am not trying to criticize or disparage those religions or the people who follow them, but the notion of same-sex attraction as something that is wrong has only happened relatively recently in terms of human development. It is also only recently that society has started to attach labels to people, their relationships and lifestyles. I personally would be considered bisexual or pansexual but these are not labels that I would use myself. I think that the diversity, variety and complexity of human relationships make labels unnecessary and a little simplistic.
I wish I even had the opportunity to know all of that during my developing years, honestly. The access to knowledge was limited, biased, well controlled and intended for dictatorial propaganda. I was hoping the Internet would resolve these power excesses, but, to my utmost despair, controlling biased creeps are even stronger, pushing their agendas with money tainted algorithms. Anyway, well - c**p, let's see some smiling cats videos.

Why did so many people feel the need to write 'I'm not gay' in their comments?
because they think if their straight and they support gay people they're better people

This post brings me so much joy and absolutely breaks my heart. How could it be possible to deny love for any adults, purely based on (assumed) gender.
I was thinking the same Peta; the hidden lives they might have lead.

Some great photos here. I'm not convinced all of these are necessarily "gay" - some are just men hugging each other which might be just friendship
I love these so much. For everyone who is saying "I'm not gay but...", you don't have to clarify. Just because you like a picture and appreciate the show of love and adoration doesn't mean YOU are gay. I'm not hetero but I can look at a straight couple and say, "Wow what a beautiful couple" and be so concerned that someone is going to go , "Well then that makes you straight." Relax. Love is love.
These are really lovely. Lots of loving relationships among the troops in WWII. A huge number of the most wonderful composers were gay, among them Aaron Copeland and Leonard Bernstein. Hard for me to believe the gay-deniers exist. Me thinks they dost protest too much.
As gay and proud myself, these are truly heartwarming. I love the fact that people care enough to find adorable photos that prove that the LGBTQ+ community is just like everyone else- they've existed just as long. Upvote, upvote, upvote. <3 <3 <3
This. THIS!!! I am SO unbelievably happy right now!! Whoever collected these, I want to HUG them SO hard!!!!!!!!!! Eeeeee!!! <3 <3 <3
Beautiful! Years ago, someone gave us a very old postcard that was a sepia-toned snapshot of a sweet-looking fellow. Written on the back in delicate handwriting, was "This is my man." Nothing like, "Dear Susan, this is my man Joe. Love, Betty." My Dad realized that the writer of the message used no names because they were a gay couple.
Wait.. are there actually people out there that think that there havn't been gay people since the beginning of humanity?!? Yikes...
I know right! I tell ppl this all the time and I am certain that before recorded history there were gay ppl. SMH
Never existed before now? Someone has never studied any history! China has records of gays going back at least two thousand years.
love is the sweetest and most powerful of all emotions. For someone to tell you what sex you can love and what sex you can't is not what this universe trying to teaching us. We should honor love above all else, that's the ticket to heaven. Something that most religious people fail or don't seem to get.
These are just lovely and dear. How can people deny there was homosexuality before now? WWII was made bearable for a lot of closeted people who found love in the troops. Who do they think Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas were, or Aaron Copeland or a vast number of musicians? What is no long surprising is that the people who are most hostile to the gay community turn out to be the most deeply closeted.
This post is magic, seeing these pics from 1930's, 40's, 50's is breathtaking. I won't pretend to know what they went through, but I sure can feel the love captured at those moments. It's like they didn't care about law, about their own safety because they love so deeply, so intense that no matter what happens they can say. They loved this person and no one could stop it. Thank you for sharing this ❤️
It must've been so difficult in those years... Even today people some struggle with ppl being judgemental! Just imagine this so many years ago
These pictures are so much more meaningful to the people who took them since these were taken before digital pictures were a thing- you didn't have quite so many pictures of you! The looks that so many of these people give each other are so beautiful. I wish every person has at least one person in their lives that could look at them like that!!!!
The Bible speaks of homosexuality so I'm not sure who thought Millennials invented it.
Christians don’t read the Bible tho so probably them. Anyway I don’t think it means that millennials literally made lgbtq but rather there’s an assumption that we have more gay people now than ever before because millennials choose to be gay. That isn’t true but some people think it is.

He's my perfect bear.
Question - wasn’t it illegal back in the 40’s and such? How did people “get away” with living together and taking these pics and stuff? Is it just because they said they were “roommates” or something? Cute couples though.
In societies where there are not many prominent homosexuals, people often got away with it beacuse people do not jump to conclusions about sexualty automatically. Bachelors living together was nothing out of the ordinary. Well dressed men were just dandies. Softly spoken men were just sissies. Masculine women were tomboys and women who kissed were just best-friends expressing un-sordid affection. In many places in the world where homosexuality is illegal today, it is not uncommon to see men hold hands or even kiss in public, because that's just what friends are expected to do.

Approximately 2,5 % of women and nearly 10% of men experience homosexuality at least at some point of their life. That's what I've heard. I'm strictly against people pretending to be gay or lesbian to attract attention(this has become a trend), but can't see what's the big deal if they really are. wow I must be super gay for all my brothers... Hah, whoopsie! xD not making commentary on being gay but... half of these pictures are men reclining with each other, making Eye Contact and Smiling, or resting a head on a shoulder... if that's "proof" of a sexual relationship, it makes me sad for the friendships people must have. They must be so lonely if they haven't had the tender love of a brother or sister. I'm so thankful for all of my beloved brothers whom I am knit to with a bond unbreakable, so counterpart and parallel to the bond of me and my beloved wife. And like I'm 24 y'all I've grown up in this culture, I'll never go back to a world where love equals sex. Too lonely, too sterile. I'd miss all my brothers too much.

Hate to disillusion you, but back in the day it was common for friends to wrap arms around each other in photos, brothers/sisters would do so too. so some of these may not be of gay couples, unless you know 100% of course. Don't think I am anti-gay! No I am not, I am the most tolerant person you will ever meet. Humans are all the same we all bleed the same colour and we love with all our hearts no matter who it is we love. Just bear in mind the historical factor of photos may not always have been gay couples. Love is love!
To be fair, some of these photos could be of siblings or friends having fun because we don’t know the context in which the photo was taken. I’m really impressed by the women who were getting married & the pics of the soldiers kissing. How cool were they? Live is undeniable! I love these photos!
The title is ridiculous... I've never once heard someone say gays didn't exist until now.. clickbait much?
I have heard multiple times people say that homosexuality was rare until we started to raise our children to be gay.
Load More Replies...I just wanted to comment on the headline. I've literately never heard anyone claim that.
When it was considered a crime to be gay, I suppose many men chose to join the church in one way or another, there the love of Jesus was encouraged, and similarly, women could worship Mary all they wanted in the convent. I am only referring to so-called Christian countries, of course. I have no idea of what it is like to be LGBT, but I also do not really know what it is like to be a man. My "ignorance" should never be a reason for ostracism. Nobody should be made to suffer for being who they are.
I am not certain that we can assume all of these are of "gays". People didn't used to equate affection with romantic love or lust. Quote: "According to Richard Godbeer’s eye-opening book, The Overflowing of Friendship, it was not unusual for platonic male friends to write tender letters to each other and to hold hands, cuddle, and even sleep in the same bed. Instead of such behavior “causing talk,” it was accepted by their wives (or girlfriends), families, and the wider community as a healthy, even necessary, aspect of their bond. Intimacy was understood to be beneficial to men’s well-being, and it was common for men to share both emotional and physical closeness. “Early Americans,” writes Godbeer, “exalted love between men as a personal, public, and spiritual good.”". From https://www.huffpost.com/entry/when-did-touch-between-male-friends-become-taboo_b_59034d03e4b084f59b49f845.
Most of these are probably friends, especially the dudes. The thing is unless you have detailed backgrounds of the pictures, you don't know either way.
I know. Everyone loves them now. I remember when they were rejected by most. I was a kid. They came to me because I worked at a variety shop on the boardwalk. They told me their stories. Their stories were from other shop owners. People are so nasty. Mixed races, mentally challenged etc. Nothing will ever change. The only thing different is that people will be publicly shamed if they show their true feelings. They are fake but I guess this is better than before.
I understand where you come from, but shouldn't we rather rejoice for the opportunity to change?
