And most of the rest were mexicans or latino. Cowboys were among the lowest rung on society, they were basically nomad farmhands. The mythos of the american cowboy stems mostly from popular theatrical and movie performances of late XIX and early XX century, when cowboys were already a thing of the past and they were seen as a relic of the heroic age of the West

Exactly. Conservation zoos are key to fixing the c**p humans do to the wild. There are still bad zoos out there deffinatly. But they are important for breeding programs, conservation and honestly.. so humans who can't afford to travel the world to physically see the animals that need protecting so they have an emotional attachment to helping.

A lot of the GOOD zoos are open in order to do this. They try to bolster failing species and also rehabilitate or house injured animals that can no longer survive on their own. Like in the US, all raptor birds in zoos are injured in a way they can't survive outside, such as if they are missing wings, have deformed beaks, etc.

Let me try to understand this... The world needs Zoos primarily due to the fact that humanity is so infantile and short-sighted... willing to decimate a species... we need zoos to keep a backup, genetically diverse enough of a population that it can be re-introduced into the ecosystem to bring the species back from the brink. Because we're d***s. Uh... well, I guess it's too bad be can't do that for ourselves and planet Earth. No backup there. No planet "B".

They’re doing well enough that you can hunt them in the White Sands area in New Mexico. The tags are very limited and tightly controlled but my FiL got one a few decades ago. I’ve never tried the meat but my wife says it’s the best she’s ever had. Interestingly, they’re actually kind of a pest in that area so the hunts help control the population so they don’t do damage to the ecosystem.

30 ‘Today I Learned’ Facts To Spark Your Curiosity (New Pics) TIL Elvis Presley craved the Fool's Gold Loaf, which consists of a hollowed-out loaf of French bread filled with one 1-lb. jar each of creamy peanut and grape jelly and a pound of fried bacon. 30 of them? I know Elvis did some crazy s**t but eating 240,000 calories worth of jelly, pb, and bacon? Edit: Okay so I did some looking and 30 might be on the high end. He was also sharing with a few people. One source lowers the amount of sandwiches to 22, but still 22 sandwiches shared with 7 people doesn't sound likely. Oh, and the place that made that monstrosity was called the Colorado Mine Company, which wouldn't be too far from me if it was still up and running today.

TIL Thomas Jefferson was so impressed by macaroni and cheese during a visit to Paris that he wrote down the recipe and instructions on pasta extrusion, imported a pasta maker, macaroni, Parmesan, and made it at his home. He served it at a state dinner in 1802.

Additional fun fact: people did not like the macaroni and cheese at his dinner in 1802. Manasseh Cutler, a friend of Jefferson, wrote:

"Dined at the President's – ... Dinner not as elegant as when we dined before. [Among other dishes] a pie called macaroni, which appeared to be a rich crust filled with the strillions of onions, or shallots, which I took it to be, tasted very strong, and not agreeable. Mr. Lewis told me there were none in it; it was an Italian dish, and what appeared like onions was made of flour and butter, with a particularly strong liquor mixed with them."
