The world is full of fascinating tidbits just waiting to be discovered, and it's never too late to learn something new. Therefore, websites like Reddit's 'Today I Learned' (TIL) community provide an endless source of mind-blowing facts you may not have come across before.
For instance, did you know that Channel 5 was the only major UK television channel that did not broadcast Queen Elizabeth II's funeral, opting to air The Emoji Movie instead? Or perhaps you have heard that Snoop Dogg was excommunicated by the Rastafari Council following his attempt to rebrand as Rastafarian "Snoop Lion"? These examples, along with many more facts from 'Today I Learned', serve as a reminder that knowledge never stands still, and we can always learn more about the world around us.
With that being said, if you'd love to see more interesting facts, then make sure to check out the previous posts here on Bored Panda (here, here, here, here, here, and here).

TIL: One in four American cowboys were black.
And most of the rest were mexicans or latino. Cowboys were among the lowest rung on society, they were basically nomad farmhands. The mythos of the american cowboy stems mostly from popular theatrical and movie performances of late XIX and early XX century, when cowboys were already a thing of the past and they were seen as a relic of the heroic age of the West
BTW, one in four is most likely an exaggeration, it's at the very top of the higher estimate. They were probably closer to one in six. Still a significant number, though.
Load More Replies...Sometimes historical facts take the longer route in getting out to the general public. Black soldiers on horseback in the U.S., Black soldiers under Roosevelt in Cuba, large and prosperous Black towns, Black inventors and Black cowboys are all important parts of U.S. history.
Highly recommend "The Harder They Fall" on Netflix as a beginning to what and who was the wild west. Then look up each name and who what they looked like and read about them. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10696784/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_1
Did not know but kind of makes sense. "Cowboy" work does not require much in the way of formal education but (based on my farm experience) would have required a lot of work. So depending on the time frame may have been a good fit for folks who were freed slaves or otherwise were treated like c**p by the "good" (aka white) people. I was "sort of" a cowboy in that we had a dairy and beef farm but I got to sleep in my own bed at night.
The entire US history is a lie! And now they’re really trying to change it!
actually its "between 10-25%" we dont have precise numbers, and there are conflicting records, so we have a range. It could have been as high as 25%. What you should be aware of is in the 1800s about 20% of sailors on whaling ships were black and about 30% were Kanaka, not to mention a smattering of asians and others. Basically whaling ships were mostly non-white
There is something else, I’m tired of people TODAY glamorizing the cowboys of yesteryear. They weren’t paid well, they weren’t assured of having a job, if someone else wanted that job. They worked in conditions that were truly miserable. They were ordinary men and yes sometimes women just trying to live from day to day.
Don't think you meant this as a racist slur so no idea why you got downvoted

TIL The Arabian Oryx became extinct in the wild by the early 1970s, but was saved in zoos and private reserves, and was reintroduced into the wild starting in 1980. In 2011, it was the first animal to revert to vulnerable status on the IUCN Red List after previously being listed as extinct
And yet people want to get rid of zoos... This is what Zoos (good ones) do people! The Oryx isn't the only animal that's been saved because of knowledge of zoos and aquariums.
Exactly. Conservation zoos are key to fixing the c**p humans do to the wild. There are still bad zoos out there deffinatly. But they are important for breeding programs, conservation and honestly.. so humans who can't afford to travel the world to physically see the animals that need protecting so they have an emotional attachment to helping.
Load More Replies...A lot of the GOOD zoos are open in order to do this. They try to bolster failing species and also rehabilitate or house injured animals that can no longer survive on their own. Like in the US, all raptor birds in zoos are injured in a way they can't survive outside, such as if they are missing wings, have deformed beaks, etc.
And a large herd is also on the White Sands Missile range, in New Mexico.
Let me try to understand this... The world needs Zoos primarily due to the fact that humanity is so infantile and short-sighted... willing to decimate a species... we need zoos to keep a backup, genetically diverse enough of a population that it can be re-introduced into the ecosystem to bring the species back from the brink. Because we're d***s. Uh... well, I guess it's too bad be can't do that for ourselves and planet Earth. No backup there. No planet "B".
zoos are backup storage. That's what I tell anyone who moans about them. Speaking as an african, our rhinos are constantly under threat because of TCM which is unscientific BS. Rhino horn does not give you a boner. It is just fingernail. Please can we get help defending our wildlife? Thanks.
They’re doing well enough that you can hunt them in the White Sands area in New Mexico. The tags are very limited and tightly controlled but my FiL got one a few decades ago. I’ve never tried the meat but my wife says it’s the best she’s ever had. Interestingly, they’re actually kind of a pest in that area so the hunts help control the population so they don’t do damage to the ecosystem.
The Phoenix zoo in Arizona was part of this project most of the herd went to Phoenix because the conditions were closest to what they already lived in. There's a bunch of information about it and they still have a few individuals that can be traced back to that herd.
TIL The aardwolf knows not to destory its food sources. Aardwolves eat part of a termite mound, leaves it, and return a few months later when the colony has rebuilt so it can have another meal. An aardwolf keeps track of mounds it attacked and can eat 250,000 termites in a single night.

TIL of "The Paradox of Choice." Research indicates that when we are given too many options to choose from, we tend to end up less satisfied than if we had fewer options to choose from. Increased choice leads to higher expectations, followed by regret and self-blame.
In french we say "trop de choix tue le choix" literally "too much choices kill the choice" I don't know if proverb exists in English
I don't think we do. That's not a very American sentiment, unfortunately. It's like what Rockefeller said when he was the richest man in the world and a reporter asked him how much money is enough, to which he answered, "Just a little bit more." The media would have us to believe that everyone always wants more, so that we'll want more (keeping up with the Joneses). Lately, most of the people I know are just grateful to hang on to what they've got, but when I was younger, there was definitely a "the more the better" attitude.
Load More Replies...As a teacher, I found that the worst thing I could say to a student was "You can be anything you want to be." Most kids are looking for guidance, not a pep talk.
I was very aware of this when I was the buyer for a major bookstore chain. You needed to ensure there was enough range on a specific topic (eg baby names or gluten free cook books) for customers to feel they had a choice, but not so many it was too overwhelming to choose from.
Ohh man, a bookstore! I either come out with a dozen books or I spend hours browsing, get overwhelmed and leave with nothing. I have to stay away from bookstores. I get too obsessed. : )
Load More Replies...Yeah, I'll end up making one choice and then immediately regretting it despite spending hours thinking about how that was the better choice. I don't need a ton of choices, I do it given two options
My dad told me that if I did some research (when appropriate) and gave my options lucid consideration, given the same situation and set of facts a year later (no new information), I'd probably make the same decision. If I didn't do appropriate research and wasn't lucid when I made my decision, it was a shot in the dark anyway. He also said that, at the moment I was coming to the decision, there was tons of information being processed by my subconscious brain that I wouldn't be aware of later. That helped me a lot to stop second-guessing my decisions.

That spans a lot of technology. I see a tablet on the desk he is sitting at but a manual typewriter on the desk behind him.
There’s probably also a PC in the corner of his desk, out of view of the camera. And younger folks say older folks can’t master new technology. Just because you have a few extra years under your belt doesn’t automatically make you a Luddite. It does, however, mean you have a load of experience that new hires right out of college do not have—-and will not until they’re the age you are now. TIL During pregnancy, if the mother suffers organ damage, the baby in the womb sends stem cells to repair the damaged organ.
Not accurate. A 2015 study published in the journal Circulation Research addressed the issue of fetal stem cells actually healing maternal organs. In this study, researchers mated female mice with transgenic male mice that were tagged with a fluorescent protein that allowed the researchers to trace the flow of the fetus's stem cells from the mother's placenta into its heart while they induced cardiac injury to the mother. They found that fetal stem cells directly targeted the damaged cardiac cells and fully integrated themselves into the mother's heart. TIL about the “Old Man of the Lake,” a 30-foot tall, 450 year old tree stump, most likely a hemlock, that has been bobbing vertically in Oregon's Crater Lake since at least 1896. Moving freely, it can be virtually anywhere on the lake, so boat captains commonly communicate its position for safety.
From wikipedia: "In 1988, submarine explorations were conducted in the lake, and the scientists decided to tie the Old Man off the eastern side of Wizard Island to neutralize the navigational hazard until their research work was complete. Upon immobilizing the log, the weather went from clear to stormy. After it started snowing in August, they released the Old Man. Soon after, the weather cleared up, encouraging superstitions."

TIL Anne Frank wrote four dirty jokes in her diary, which she later papered over so they weren’t discovered by researchers until 2018.

There is a totally naked man, and when that one man asked what the other was doing there, the man in the closet answered: 'You can believe it or not but I am waiting for the tram.' "
I prefer the later version. "In the wardrobe is a totally naked man. 'What are you doing here?' demands the husband. 'Pest control. I'm killing moths,' says the naked man. 'Without any clothes on!?' shouts the husband. The nude man looks down at himself. 'The little bastards!' he says"

TIL that same-sex behavior has been recorded in more than 1000 species in animal kingdom ranging from beetles to penguins. This was earlier often seen as an example of Darwin's paradox as these behaviors are non-reproductive and don't contribute to the advancement of species in the traditional sense.
And, they're not beaten, left behind or killed for it by their herd/group/pack. Animals being civil. We should learn from animals.
In a way they DO “contribute to the advancement of species”, though not in a traditional sense. They often adopt the unwanted young of traditional mating pairs, often one or more of a multiple birth, or the abandoned runt of the litter. Those are the young who would be neglected and left to die. By nurturing those abandoned babies, the “non-traditional” couple advances the species by increasing their numbers, and potentially raising them to adulthood, when they can choose to mate and make babies of their own, unless they were born to seek a same-sex mate—-in which case, they have learned how to adopt and raise abandoned young.
There is a pair of male penguins in the aquarium in Dingle, they often act as foster parents. And I read about another pair somewhere else who stole an egg from a neighbouring nest to raise.
Actually, one theory is that homosexuality in penguins actually does serve a benefit: if there is an extra egg (either because one penguin lays two or some die), then heterosexual couples would not care for it since they make their own. However, gay penguin couples will take available eggs and care for them.
Anthropologist have already figured out having gay family members was Highly beneficial for a family group. Adult but non-reproducing members in a group greatly increased the group's ability to gather resources without the burden of extra young. The existence of a gay uncle could absolutely prevent the extinction of that family's genetics. Gay people are not a flaw in the Divine Plan they are an integral part of the Divine Plan. Humanity probably wouldn't have flourished and thrived without our gay family members.

TIL that Hawaii was a sovereign self-governing kingdom all the way up until 1893, totally unassociated with the U.S., until a coup d'état that year by 13 businessmen and 162 U.S. troops, with the openly stated goal of annexing the islands. (They succeeded.)
Recommending Michener's 'Hawai'i'--it is a sweeping history of the island with fictional and non-fictional characters, and doesn't shy from exposing how terribly the islands were exploited. A great read!
I support Hawaiian sovereignty, but with their being the most remote archipelago on the planet, and with them being such a great strategic location for military operations, if the U.S. gave them back to themselves, I wonder who would next try to take them over, and what the U.S. would do about it.
I was also thinking that Hawaii is perfectly located for a US military base. Back then, planes couldn't go very far, so Hawaii was a perfect stop-over for refueling. Also a great place for naval ships. I'm guessing that this is largely why the US annexed Hawaii.

It's because its roots go rather deep. If any of it remains in the ground, it can keep growing. So if one wishes to keep it at bay (and one should, because if left to its own devices, it can take resources from other plants, and it also attracts lots of harmful bugs if a lot of it is in one place), then it needs to be dug up every year down to its last bit of root. No, it says 30% of pediatric SCALD burns. A scald burn is a burn from a very hot liquid.

TIL the phrase "pulling out all the stops" is derived from pipe organs, which have many levers called 'stops' which allow the organist to control the volume and timbre of different pipes. Pulling out all the stops would result in the loudest, most comprehensive sound.
This one seemed obvious to me - which in turn makes me feel rather old. These days pipe organs are rare to the point of being a curiosity.
Not in the UK, pretty much every C of E Church has an organ, some are quite magnificent. Some of the ones in cities such as York, Wells and Bristol are quite astonishingly beautiful (and very loud if you stand too close !!)
Load More Replies...this isn't exactly phrased well. Stops are entire ranks of pipes all of a same type. Pipe organs were originally designed to mimic an entire orchestra--pipes can be made of different materials, have reeds or not, or even have loops or flares. A 'stop' is a group of pipes all of one type. So a common one is the very highest stop, called the 'chimes'.
I thought it meant literal "stops". Like, stop signs and/or brakes. "Pulling out all the stops" meaning no stopping or braking/slowing down. But this version makes sense too, if you know anything about pipe organs.

TIL Thomas Jefferson was so impressed by macaroni and cheese during a visit to Paris that he wrote down the recipe and instructions on pasta extrusion, imported a pasta maker, macaroni, Parmesan, and made it at his home. He served it at a state dinner in 1802. Additional fun fact: people did not like the macaroni and cheese at his dinner in 1802. Manasseh Cutler, a friend of Jefferson, wrote: "Dined at the President's – ... Dinner not as elegant as when we dined before. [Among other dishes] a pie called macaroni, which appeared to be a rich crust filled with the strillions of onions, or shallots, which I took it to be, tasted very strong, and not agreeable. TIL On average, the United States has only eight public toilets per 100,000 people.
In the US, the lowest availability are Louisiana and Mississippi with 1 toilet every 100.000 people. Most states are at a 4 to 8 range. The best is Wyoming, an outlier at 44. The average of 8 toilets per 100k people puts the USA at the same tier as Botwsana, Georgia (the country) and Poland. Mississippi and Louisiana are in the same tier as Ghana, Uganda and Mali.
Wyoming is probably due to the low population but high amount of government owned land. 600K people but between Grand Teton & Yellowstone there are hundreds of public toilets.
Load More Replies...Kind of a pointless statistic in that you can walk into 99% of businesses and use the restroom.
Yes. "Public toilets" and "toilets available to the public" are not the same thing.
Load More Replies...But take into account that the majority of those 100,000 ALSO have their own private toilets at home, very often more than one if they have roommates or family members living with them, and most people generally do the majority of their “business” at home.
...but many private business in the US allow the public to use their restrooms without being a customer....gas stations, most retail stores, restaurants (especially fast food)...and then like malls are private businesses but have publicly accessible toilets. So there isn't really a need for the government to provide as many public toilets.
I question this one. Local large-ISH city has a population of about 100K. I can think of more than 8 public toilets w/out even trying. So if true - some places are really hurting to bring back down the average. But also, there are a LOT of toilets available to the public that are not public toilets. The restrooms in Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot, every restaurant and on and on - are technically private toilets. So it isn't like there are 100,000 people crossing their legs in a queue some place.
Are highway rest stops counted as public toilets? B/c if so, the fact that rest stops are RAPIDLY disappearing could be a factor in why the numbers seem skewed so low. From the standpoint of simply needing a toilet, this is no big deal, as others have said, as most stores & restaurants have restrooms even non-customers can use. But it makes a world of difference to exhausted truckers who now have to park in Walmart parking lots, or on highway offramps-which makes them a hazard to themselves & others-to sleep, unless they want to pay at an expensive truck stop. And it makes a difference to tired civilian travelers who just wanted to make a quick pit stop to pee & grab a snack, without leaving the highway & searching for a gas station, possibly unknowingly ending up in a bad area, & almost certainly costing them at least 30 mins of traveling time. But the government keeps tearing down rest stops, because they don't want to pay to maintain something that doesn't make them profit. 🙄
Misleading statistic; businesses provide many free, publicly available restrooms in the U.S., particularly fast food restaurants.

Barnacles are still a major problem for ships but they have better technology for preventing / removing them these days. But I saw a video on how much drag / extra fuel they can cost a cargo ship and the effect was surprising.
Barnacles where used to torture or kill people with them being dragged with ropes along the hull of the boat being seriously lacerated in the process
I talked to a sailship sailor while doing research for a novel and they said that operating a sialship 'is a constant battle against the ship decaying'. You have to constantly scrape the hull, treat the wood with tar, etc. etc. it never stops. No wonder ships had so many crewmen!
Still true today on any sailboat moored and sailed on salt water. What doesn't rust will rot and/or be shrouded in mold if you don't stay on top of it. You have to dry-dock/yank it every so often and have the hull scraped (expensive!!). You spend a fortune on isopropyl alcohol to get the water out of the fuel tank. You have to tie floaties to every tool you have, including the capstan crank, because you WILL drop them in the water right after you finished scraping all the rust off of them. Same goes for your keys. Sigh...
