Naming a baby is a big deal and requires careful consideration. Most parents don’t just thrust a name onto their child; they tend to pick ones that are meaningful, unique, or family-oriented. But what they don’t seem to realize is that not everybody will adore the moniker they’ve picked.

This happened to an expecting mother who got a reality check when she announced the name she’d picked for her baby. Unfortunately, things did not go according to plan, and her sister burst out laughing after hearing the extremely unique name.

The 28-year-old’s parents banned her from all future family dinners because she scoffed at her sister’s idea

The woman realized her mistake and called her sister to apologize, admitted that she shouldn’t have used her disability as an excuse, and even treated her to lunch

The poster shared that her sister is obsessed with aesthetics. She has colored her whole house and nursery beige and grey and will not accept colorful gifts for the baby. She probably wants her child’s name to follow her similar aesthetic ideas. Her sister picked the name Brookleeigh-Willow Rose for a girl because it sounds “very nature-like and [flows] nicely” and “she wanted to name the child ‘Righlee’ (as in Riley) if it was a boy.”

Many moms share that their family or friends hate their baby’s name and would pass judgment before or after the kid’s birth. But they also add that “what mattered was who we thought our child was.” Parents ultimately have the last say about what their children should be called, and nobody else has the right to mock their ideas or put them down for their choices.

Of course, there are instances where expecting parents regret the name they’ve given their kids after they are born. According to a survey, although 18% of parents regret the name they gave their child, only 2% made any effort to get it changed. Another study found that one of the main reasons behind the regret was the issue other folks had pronouncing the name.

That’s why naming experts state that parents should take the time to explain why they’ve chosen that particular moniker and why it’s so special to them. This helps the child develop a connection with it and gives other folks a better understanding as well. If people still pass judgment, then that’s their problem to deal with.

According to Business Insider, “when it comes to important life decisions, everyone has an opinion. Sadly, outside pressure when it comes to baby naming is a real thing.” Parents are often forced to name their child after a family member or discouraged from giving their baby a unique title.

The expecting mother must have felt bad when her sister could not stop laughing at her name idea. Although netizens also did not like the name the sister had chosen, they could not side with the woman’s bad behavior. They felt that she was using her autism as an excuse to mock her pregnant sister.

It’s possible that the poster has pulled stunts like this in the past because she told commenters: “my family will react like that, and these ‘bans’ usually only last a few months.” But luckily, her idea to post the dilemma online helped her get the reality check she deserved. She graciously accepted the comments she received.

The woman also later apologized to her sister and tried to make things right. Brookleeigh-Willow Rose and Righlee are certainly unique names, but the new mom has a right to give her baby any name she wants. Who knows, maybe in a decade or so the kid will make a post on Reddit about their name. Then, we can finally judge the mom’s decision.

Despite not loving the name, most people called out the poster for not caring about her sister’s feelings and using her autism as an excuse to mock her

Do you think the name 'Brookleeigh-Willow Rose' is a good choice for a baby?

The laughing was rude, but understandable. It's also good practice for what is awaiting your sister in that world out there as she totes her child and its name around.

The name is stupid. The child will be laughed at. Babies need strong colors to look at to train the eyes to see. This mother is living in lala land. She's living in a tictok world, instead of the real world of a mom to a real baby. I am so sad for this child.

I've known a person named Brooke, one named Willow, and one Rose. That kid could probably salvage the situation with a nickname. And I probably would have laughed along with OP if I were in the same room.

She is definitively not the a*****e. I would not only laugh but INSIST she does not name that kid that. What kinda fed up parent does that to their kid? Sister or not you do that and i wont talk to you you wont have to ban me from family events i wont show up to the kind of people who pick names that can ruin their kid's life. A name is a choice. I dont want to put the moral cost of other kids bullyin on the parents but by F if you can attenuate it and or remove it by not giving the kid an unhinged name it is your responsibility as a parent.

I almost named my kid Atz. No one outright laughed but the facial expressions were priceless. The whole point of sharing a baby name before hand is to get honest feedback. My poor kid almost went around being called "Ox" for his whole life. Thank goodness I didn't name him that.

Hold on . . Everyone, OP, you have Autism, you have psuedobulbar effect (laughing at inappropriate times) it's a REAL thing AND your family apparently bans YOU regularly, more than once from family functions? Yet no one seems to think that's F$%&D up???? WTH is wrong with them?? Let's get real. Autism is not an excuse, It's a REASON!! A real reason why you do some things neurotypical people do not do. I don't see you using it as an excuse anymore than a paraplegic using an elevator instead of stairs is an excuse. But understanding disabilities, I live and care for someone totally and permanently disabled for over 40 yrs, it's still sad and disheartening how many people criticize and judge who have zero clue because they can't relate. But that's strangers on a social forum. Your family though? They are total AH's. They know you. To ban you on a regular basis? Please find a family group who gets you. They don't have to be blood. The one you were born into is broken and you can do better

You are correct here. While the behaviour may have been wrong (although im pretty sure the internet has agreed its okay to not be polite about names like that, I wonder what's different this time.) Banning them over it, knowing this isn't a conscious decision they make is f*cked. That's not to say they should just ignore it, but there's the appropriste middle ground of calling them out, and maybe MAYBE asking them to leave this one day.

The Willow Rose part isn’t too bad, but I have to agree with the commenter who said the Brookleigh part will turn into Broccoli once the kid is in school. My Eastern European maiden name (nope, I will not tell you what it was, because I don’t want to open myself up to hearing it all over again) was a source of many mean jokes and ridicule and certain dirty words that rhymed when I was in school—-and even beyond, until I got married and moved it to my middle name. Everyone seems to think they’re the very first one to think of the exact same joke or variation or rhyme with an unusual name too, even though you’ve heard them all over and over your entire life. That’s something John Smith and Jane Jones never ever had to contend with, so have no idea just how much it hurts and sticks with you, so when they give their own kids weird names, or normal names spelled weirdly, they have no clue the hell they’re setting their kids up for once they start school. I can only imagine in the next 15-20 years, there will be a rush on the court system of these kids turning 18 and officially changing their names, or the spelling of their names, to something more normal, and not giving a fat rat’s a*s if their parents are hurt or disappointed because of it—-probably telling their parents that, if they like the name or spelling of the name so much, then they can change their OWN names to it if they want, but the kid will go on with their life without the burden of the stupid name/spelling of the name.

If a family can't handle an honest reaction and actually bans it's member from coming to dinner over something like this, I don't think that the poster is the problem. Is it a bit rude? Sure. But it was not premeditated and what kind of siblings can't laugh at each other when they are being ridiculous? It sounds like the rest of the family needs pull the sticks out of their respective arses.
