50 Times People Just Had To Document These Insanely Large Portions Of Food They Received In The US
You know what they say: Everything’s bigger in Texas! But in this case, make that the entire United States, because below, we’ve gathered a list of some of the most jaw-droppingly and heart-stoppingly massive portions of food that you can’t find anywhere else in the world.
From burritos the size of babies to planet-sized pizzas, our listmakers have scoured the internet sniffing out the biggest plates possible. Enjoy this list of pics that will make you full just by looking at them, and be sure to upvote all of the photos that make you say, “God bless America!” (Or at least, God bless America’s arteries…)

Enormous Pizza, Banana For Scale
If we can't see inside the box, how do we know how big the pizza /really/ is, hmmm?
You need 6 months more on Bored Panda and you'll be an expert on banana scale. Just give yourself time, it grows on you 🙃
Load More Replies...I went to their website, and the largest pizza I could find is 24". Nothing this big. And keep in mind most people, even here in the US, share a pizza.
What makes you think this box is bigger than 24"? Looks like it could be two feet.
Load More Replies...I hope people outside the US realize that NONE of these are normal portions. These are specials, promotions, or attractions the restaurants are famous for.
This Steak
That right there is the #1 reason I could never seriously be 100% vegetarian. BEEF. It's what's for dinner.
Interesting how different the perception of this picture is. I see a huge chunk of dead cow. Couldn't eat it, you can have it 😅
Load More Replies...Cold beef is still beef though. Plus it's cold anyway if you get it cooked like I do, lol
Load More Replies...This Pizza Slice
Theey should make it in the shape of a banana, how else are we supposed to know how big it is?
Load More Replies...Alright, first things first. Let’s address the elephant (or elephant-sized portion of food) in the room: no, not all American restaurants serve these gigantic portions. I’m from the United States, and I can vouch for the fact that you will not find meter-long pizza slices often. The comically large portions are often sold for the novelty aspect, and those same businesses probably sell regular-sized pizzas as well. But in general, yes, the portions are likely larger than what you’ll find in many other countries. I’ve been to plenty of restaurants in Europe where I’ve received portions big enough to take home leftovers as well, but the difference is that taking home leftovers is often expected in the US.
Nobody will bat an eye if you ask your server to box up the rest of your meal, because honestly, it’s often more surprising if you can finish it all. Everyone is different, and we all have our own unique appetites. But assuming that every single American is eating meals like these on a daily basis is just incorrect. These photos have been shared on social media because they are shockingly huge!
This Pancake That Came With My Omelette. This Is From Billy Gail’s In Branson, MO
Probably the same amount of food as a stack of normal sized pancakes.
They used to make one that size at this little hole in the wall restaurant where we vacation every year. Always got it, always took me two days to eat it, never regretted the food comas..
You shoulda seen the toast! We couldn't even get it through the door
From The Hot Dog Hall Of Fame In Orlando, Florida
Most likely butter, they probably slathered it and then put it face down on the flat top grill to crisp it
Load More Replies...I'm so hungry! Might take mean entire day but you will get in mah belly!
WOW. I'll have to remember that when we're in Orlando later this year
Dreaming About This Most Beautiful Donut Duo On Donut Day
Sprinkles ruined it for me. I get "nails on the black board" feeling chewing those things.
I remember when it was Lone Star Bakery when I was a kid. Most amazing donuts ever. Now I want a donut from them. Glad they deliver out of state! Edit: I clicked on the image and it is indeed Round Rock Donuts ❤️!
Load More Replies...Part of the reason these giant portions exist is because of social media. If you see a photo of a milkshake that’s two-feet tall on Instagram, you might want to head to the same place and order one for yourself. “Foodstagramming” has been popular for over a decade now, and it can help businesses gain impressive amounts of traction. If they serve an item that goes viral or generates lots of shares and comments on social media, customers will come pouring in asking for the sundae the size of a ship or the pizza that won’t fit in their car to take home.
And when it comes to what types of food content do best on social media, you might not be surprised to hear that salads and smoothies aren’t what most followers are craving. According to one study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, calorically dense food seems to get the most engagement on social media. Cakes, burgers, sundaes, steaks, bowls of mac ‘n cheese, etc. We all love eating with our eyes, and even if we know that giant donut might not be the healthiest choice to have this afternoon, we can at least drool over a photo of it on Instagram.
I Said Two Scoops Of Pear, And Then The Ice Cream Lady Gave Me This Unit
Pretty sure this isn't America as the emblem on the steering wheel is for Opel, not a brand sold here.
Yep, that’s not a car you’d typically ever see in the U.S. I’ve only ever seen those in shows from overseas. I can’t believe anyone would spend the extra shipping costs it would take to get one of them, here. (I’m not saying I think they’re bad cars. There are some decent brands sold here that I also don’t think would be worth shipping elsewhere).
Load More Replies...Well, you know… scoops, shovels… Sound almost the same. Easy mistake to make.
Nearly 45 years ago as a child our family went to Florida from UK for a holiday. In the UK at the time you did not get obese people. Fast food was really just chip shops except say in places like London. Remember being at a shopping mall in Florida and these 2 people who filled an entire four person bench were sitting there see eating ice cream cones with what looked like every flavour stacked on it. We all noticed these people just sitting their licking away at the ice cream. We were just as fascinated when we passed by them an hour later on the way back to the car. They were still eating their way through the ice cream...
A Chicken Sandwich I Ordered That Was Impossible To Eat Normally. Didn't Expect The Size (Had More Chips On The Side)
Public House restaurant in Sarasota, Florida.
It's not a sandwich/burger if it doesn't fit in the bun. Might as well serve it on a plate and give me a bread roll.
The secret ingredient is newspaper ink! It’s hiding in plain sight!
Better question is what was the size of that chicken? A Chickosaurus?
Chicken? What kind of brontosaurus beast of a bird did they make THAT out of?
This Table-Size Pizza At Big Joe's Pizza, San Antonio, Texas
Bloke on the left is "this is easy!" Bloke on right "are you for real?"
It's actually Big Lou's Pizza. Probably an autocorrect. But yes, their pizzas are HUGE!!!
I feel like four guys could eat there, and still take like half of it home. 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕
Ethan Pancer, Associate Professor of Marketing at Saint Mary’s University, and Matthew Philp, Assistant Professor of Marketing at Toronto Metropolitan University, explored the idea of why we’re so attracted to fatty foods on social media in a piece they wrote for The Conversation. “Humans are hard-wired to seek foods with characteristics that the brain instinctively recognizes as valuable,” the authors explained. “Seeing calorie-dense foods like those high in fat content (like burgers, pizza and cookies) typically precedes pleasurable consumption, so it is natural that humans visually attend to food.”
I Found Out Why The Curly Fries Were $7. It’s The Whole Fryer Basket
Fries probably shouldn't be made in big portions. They go stale fast. A lot of the portions on this thread can be eaten over time.
This Giant Bavarian Pretzel I Ordered
In bavaria, we eat those large pretzels in the summer in the Biergarten. Mostly with obatzda (soft cheese) or with bavarian sweet mustard. If you ever come to bavaria, don't miss out on that. (Also order a mass (1 Liter of bavarian beer))
An original Bavarian Breze is only eaten pure, with butter or with "Obatzda". :)
And the giant ones are usually sold at beer gardens and fairs.

I have had this sandwich! Daybird in Los Angeles (Szechuan fried chicken) It's one of the greatest chicken sandos ever, and honestly, it's not a huge sandwich. I love that part of the cutlet is not within the sandwich because the fry and seasoning is so good just by itself, that you get 2 experiences in one! You can choose between a crispy crunchy juicy bite, or a bite with all the fixings! Both are great!
As someone who usually stops eating the bread/ bun about halfway through and just eats the filling, I am very very comfortable with this
“Finding and eating calorie-dense foods typically makes people feel good, releasing dopamine and stimulating pleasure centers of the brain,” Pancer and Philp went on to note. “This suggests that nutritional content can be broadly gauged by a dish’s appearance, and that the simple exposure to calorie-dense meals can make people feel good.” I have to admit, I follow plenty of restaurants and accounts on Instagram sharing mouth-watering vegan donuts, vegan burgers, vegan burritos, etc. that I’ve never actually tried myself. But just seeing the content captivates me, and perhaps, now I know why.

Thank you to The Poky Dot for an awesome New Year's treat. If you find yourself in Fairmont this place is a must-visit.
random but what's your favourite ice cream flavour? mine is strawberry cheesecake
What a waste. Most of it will melt sooner than you can eat it.
I see this turning into a big mess with that small plate, if you don't eat it fast enough... I'd accept that challenge though :D
Some of the photos on this list also feature foods associated with challenges that restaurants and businesses promote. They know it’s not normal to eat a 50-pound burger, but if you and your friends can attempt to devour one within 3 hours, perhaps you’ll win a cash prize! (And post about it on social media, of course. Free publicity!) There are countless food challenges out there, so if you’re interested in finding one near you, be sure to check out the Food Challenges website. In fact, this website catalogs challenges from all over the world, so don’t think it’s just Americans who partake in these experiences!

Take Me Back To The Places With Big Food (Florida)
That tiny girl must just be posing with the food instead of eating it. She’s essentially a banana.

I know where she took 2/5 of those pictures. Plus 2 that I recognize but I just can't get the name

A Very Large Slice Of Pizza And Finished It
Pizza Barn in Yonkers, NY. It is a very small place, and a plain slice goes for about 10 dollars.
Everytime i hear about Yonkers i think about the book World War Z. Great book, awful movie.
How could someone finish that in one sitting? I couldn't even eat half.
Everything seems to be bigger in the United States, but it wasn’t always this way. Once upon a time, in the 1950s to be exact, a good old American burger with toppings typically weighed about 4 ounces. Today, on the other hand, a full burger is likely to weigh in at a whopping 12 ounces. Even our plates have increased in size to accommodate the American appetite for big portions. In the 50s, the average dinner plate was about 9”, while today’s tend to be 10.5” or larger. And while every American does not have to participate in preparing giant portions of meals, I have to admit that even being exposed to these big serving sizes does tend to normalize them. I know it’s too much, but maybe I just want that much ice cream today! (I’ll find out later that I don’t, when the tummy ache sets in…)
This Burrito Given To My Mom's Work
that are clearly wrapped into one big tortilla...
Load More Replies...What an absolutely horrible idea! The beauty of a burrito is that it's a self-contained unit that you hold in your hand(s) while you eat it, like a vertical sandwich, with the tortilla keeping everything together. If you cut this "thing" up to share, then only 2 people get actual burritos (the end pieces, which will still have a bottom), and everyone else has to put their section in a bowl or on a plate and eat it with a knife and fork. I commend the effort, but condemn the premise of a "party burrito". 👎
This is actually the correct size for a burrito. Everyone else just makes them too small.
The 2-Foot-Long New York Pizza (Pizza Barn Yonkers)
Its not actually a slice, they make a pizza pie in slice shape and cook it that way.
Look at all that fat and oil. You could get a heart attack from the smell alone.
That thing is big enough to fold into a thousand cranes!

I Don't Even Know What To Say About This Taco From Recio's Smokehouse Restaurant And Catering
I’ve lived in west and south central Texas my whole life…over 60 years. With only a few exceptions I’ve never heard a first generation Hispanic Texas resident use the word “burrito.” All of the things we call tacos and burritos are just tacos. The word “burrito” starts showing up in second generation Hispanic Texas residents but they kind of roll theirs eyes, like, these are “tacos” but if your want me to call them burritos… That’s just my experience…yours may differ.

Thats a Chapatti roll. In school we used to have it for lunch evreyday.
Obviously, we don’t need these massive portions, and if we had never seen them before, we probably wouldn’t even want them. In fact, small children are much better at regulating their hunger, even when presented with big portions, than adults, or even older kids, are. “One study from the US found that when three-year olds were served small, medium and larger portions of macaroni cheese, they always ate roughly the same amount,” Bee Wilson writes for The Guardian. “By contrast, five-year-olds ate a lot more when the portion of macaroni cheese was oversized.” As we get older, we are confronted with big portions everywhere we go, leading us to believe that these are normal, and we often lose track of our hunger cues.
This Hot Dog At A Rangers Game
Guys? Why haven’t we been asking for a tape measure for scale all this time? Way more accurate than bananas.
Nah. Bananas are universal. Tape measures could be metric or imperial depending on whether it’s in the US or the rest of the world.

Now, I would be remiss to discuss these humongous portions of food without warning you pandas to eat responsibly. Yes, we all love to indulge on junk food every now and then, and we totally deserve to enjoy that chocolate chip cookie or burger when the craving hits. But let’s not over-indulge. About 42% of adults in the United States are obese, which can lead to life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, strokes, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. Not to mention the fact that monster-sized meals like this tend to create excessive amounts of food waste. So enjoy your greasy treats when you feel like it, but remember that your heart will thank you if you keep meals like these to a minimum so that you can stay around on this planet for longer. And when you do order these big treats, be sure to share with many friends, so you don’t end up having to throw away the majority of that meal you paid for!

Biggest Slice Of Pizza In Dallas?
That looks a little suspicious. I've never see a pizza you could hold up like that without the toppings sliding off.
It's kinda possible, especially if there's cheese that sticks the toppings firmly on the pizza

Yup. A stromboli starts with a square and is rolled. This was a circle folded on itself, which is indeed a calzone.

Yeah, that "pizza" is like cardboard with cheese on it.

Load More Replies...its a breakfast poutine guys. How have you'se never enjoyed the beauty of a breakfast poutine? From on Canadian to another lol. I live in the middle of nowhere and everytime I venture to the city someone usually orders this dish. The cheese sauce is hollandaise sauce FYI.
Yeah, still not poutine... and if that's hollandaise, I've been making eggs Benedict terribly wrong. :D

For non-Americans: these portions are not normal. We do not eat anywhere near this size on a regular basis. I'm guessing the vast majority of those pictures were food challenges; very seldom does anyone take on one of these challenges. Our portion sizes are large, but not this large.
Not only were many food challenges (which are kind of disgusting but that's another topic) but many were intended to be shared among several people. I've lived in the US all my life and have never seen portions like these IRL. Yes, we do have large portions and an issue with obesity, but this is just over the top.
Load More Replies...I'm sorry but this isn't funny. It's unhealthy and most likely a waste of food.
Except that very few of these, as noted several times, are for one person. And usually for a treat, not standard everyday dining.
Load More Replies...If you think this is in any way normal, you're quite naíve. You'll mostly find ridiculous stuff like this in tourist traps. And if I hear "absolute unit" one more time, I'm going to go postal.
This is not the norm at all. Like someone else posted, these look like food challenges, which aren't normal either. I've never seen food challenges or portion sizes like this here.
I have only be once in the US, that was in 2016 and I never saw this kind of abomination...the meals we had were normal size.
I've lived in the US for 59 years and have never seen such portions. It's irritating the they are presented as normal.
Load More Replies...I am from the US, and all these are shocking. There are many, many, many people here who do not believe bigger portions are better and honestly, a lot of this stuff is dependent on where you live in the US, and most of it is food found at fairs or at single places scattered throughout the country. This is not the norm. I have never seen 98% of the stuff they showed here. I will defend big pizzas. They are nice for when you are feeding multiple people.
I'll say it yet again: US is not alone. Get a dish of poutine in Canada. That's food for a fam of four! In Latin America, we often split restaurant portions, b/c they were so large (not from greed, but b/c if you're going out to eat with your friends who are locals, you get extra). So .... blame humans. Not America, please.
Spocks's Dad and I will usually order one takeout meal and split it. I am not crazy about leftovers so it works well for us.
Load More Replies...Some of these are food challenges, one is from Korea, but I'm sure none of these are expected to be eaten in one go or alone.
